So-Called French soup with croutons and white broth and uncooked onions
Robert S.

This is a nice charming place nice staff. If you're thinking this place is a French cuisine restaurant it's far from it. What caught my eye first. I saw that they had french onion soup (I am a big fan of) The only thing that's "French" is the ceramic bowl that it's served in, Note my pictures French onion soup should be a beef broth, not a vegetable base broth. If that, what was, onion should been sauteed then put in the broth, not raw onions, and especially not using croutons instead should use a piece of baguette. The cheese was good. As well as their French dip sandwich. There's nothing french about it. Note to owner French dips were invented in Los Angeles in the early 1900s, not France. The meat was decent not chewy. The au jus, you could tell came out of a can. I usually do not try to write bad reviews, but if you want a nice charming place that serves sandwiches and Mexican cuisine, this might be the right place and it's extremely quiet in there which is nice too.

One of the best kept secrets in Pasadena. Hot and new for the last 40 years! Still managed by the friendly owner Kathleen who still attends to all the guests with her very friendly personality and wonderful hospitality. A true restauranteur at heart which is hard to find these days. Her partner does all the fresh baked items and desserts that range from banana bread, zucchini bread, pies and cakes all made fresh! Amazing staff and service too! You always tell a great restauranteur by their staff and knowing that they have been there a long time and still take pride in the service, food and tending to regulars by name. Open mostly for breakfast and lunch and early dinner. Opens early and closes early always steadily busy with its regular and mixed Pasadena clientele from all walks of life. Wonderful selection on the menu including a bar and breakfast fiesta specials including some Mexican breakfast favorites and a wonderful looking Belgian waffle and French toast. Their blt and avocado sandwich was excellent along with its shoestring fries. Their onion soup is probably one of the best in LA - not so beefy but a good mix of onions, melted cheese and homemade croutons. I'd come back for just the French onion soup and their spinach salad but want to try everything on their menu from their cod tempura fish & chips to their kebabs and steak! Plus plenty of salads, burgers, sandwiches and California cuisine! I think i found a new favorite place to dine! Perfect for breakfast or brunch and they have a dining room off to the side that can accommodate larger parties. Very kid friendly too! I've passed by Kathleen's for so many years and always thought it was an upscale restaurant but was so pleased to see how casual, friendly and great food was hidden behind its wooden front facade. They even have some outdoor patio dining in the back making them pooch and dog friendly. Their casual dining room and menu make it a perfect restaurant for everyone. The zucchini bread loaf was generous and delicious! I wanted to get the banana bread but it was already sold out! PS $1 mimosas for breakfast? What a deal! I will definitely be back many times. What a gem , hole in the wall wonderful dining experience for breakfast or lunch. Just nearby the Reyn restaurant but i think is way better! Prices are just a buck or two more but the quality of Kathleen's food and service is much better than most coffee shops or diners. Plenty of parking in the back.

Kathleen's has graciously hosted our Pasadena City College Football Alumni luncheon for a few years now and they always treat us like family. I had a taste for enchiladas and I wasn't disappointed! I asked my waitress about them and they came highly recommended so I ordered them. Kathleen is a queen and they do a wonderful job serving their customers.

Watery coffee. But David will keep it hot and filled for you so that you forget how watery it is.

Believe the reviews about unfriendly energies, sub standard food, and the place being egregiously tired. Needs to be bulldozed down, it is so old and dated. If you are not geriatric and caucasian, please please please save yourself a bewildering headache. I made the most terrible mistake of coming here with my family. I am embarrassed to have celebrated an impromptu event there. Goes to show, Yelp is not always right. Trust your gut people. Never again. The servers are nice but, yes, robotic, as others have said. The one star is for David. He is a gentleman of the highest degree in that decrepit dark cesspool of a restaurant. He needs to resign and set his sights much higher. I wanted to leave 10 minutes in but my party didnt want to be rude. Oh, and if you're wondering: 1. Nothing from the griddle until the weekend. Don't ask for pancakes or waffles. Nothing. I have no idea about the mimosas either. Nothing was offered. 2. In case you forgot, if you're black or brown, turn around. Dont go in. Please.

We arrived just before noon and there was already a wait list and line for a table. When checking in, we were told it would be about a half hour wait or so. It's fine, they take your number and text you to let you know when your table is ready. Also, it's advised to look at the menu beforehand as when your table is ready, you order before being seated. It did take about half an hour or so till we got seated. We originally asked for a table outside but it wasn't available so inside it was. You order before being seated and a number placards is given for the table. Menu, it has a a lot of good dishes to choose from. The last time we were here the meal was great so we knew what to expect again. Started off with some mimosas, which was about 10.00 a glass. Also water was brought out. Every single one of the staff were so friendly which is nice to walk into a place so welcoming. Friendly hi, making sure everyone was taken care of and if anything was needed. Great customer service. Drinks didn't take long to arrive followed by the first item. The cinnamon apple French toast. It was quite nice with the crunch and apple jam. Everything was great when brought out that no extra syrup was needed. Also served with whipped cream. Within a Couple minutes after that, the entrees came out. An order of the kimchi buttered fried chicken Benedict. First off, it was delicious. Two big portions of Benedict, with kimchi added and the chicken had a lot of flavors. It wasn't too powering with the kimchi and worked really well. That came with their potatoes and a side salad. And the Norwegian Benedict with smoked salmon. Basically a smoked salmon Benedict with all the trimmings. The meals were great and the dishes were massive. We've seen a couple of people sharing plates and lots of leftovers. The food was great and delicious. Service didn't take long after ordering and staff were all very friendly. The only waiting was for a table but that's a given during the weekend. They are limited in hours. Mainly breakfast and brunch but the food was great. Until next time. Parking situation is either street parking which is paid with the kiosk as well as the parking structure behind the building.

I had the Nashville Benedict, which was pretty good, I would've liked the chicken to be a little spicier, but it was tender, and the eggs were excellent. The only part that wasn't my favorite was the salad dressing, but no one comes to breakfast for salad. The service was great, everyone was very sweet and helpful and kept the place really clean. There's a convenient parking lot behind and around the corner. Definitely check it out.

I ordered the stacked pancake breakfast along with an iced matcha latte, which was refreshing after a workout class nearby. My husband chose the brisket lunch burrito. Our food took quite a while to arrive, close to 30 mins! But the staff was very apologetic and even brought us a complimentary muffin while we waited. The pancakes were light, fluffy, and delicious. I swapped the bacon for tofu, and it made for a satisfying breakfast. However, my husband wasn't as impressed with his brisket burrito, saying it was a bit dry. Based on this visit, I'd recommend sticking with the breakfast items, pastries, and of course, the coffee. Copa Vida still makes a great cup of coffee!

It's a cute little cafe with a nice and welcoming interior located in Downtown Pasadena. Service was super friendly, and the owner took the time to explain some of the best dishes to us. Now for the food, everything was fantastic. Here are my thoughts: La Bordelaise - This was such a unique savory crepe. The balance of flavors was so good, with salmon and spinach mixed inside. Everything just worked together. I've never had anything quite like this, but I would easily get it again. (5/5) Fantasy Crepe - This is your sweet crepe. It's simple but makes for a nice treat. The crepe had a great texture, and nothing was overpowering. Who doesn't love Nutella? Really enjoyable. (4.5/5) Croque Madame - Another simple yet delicious dish. It's basically a ham and cheese sandwich with a runny egg on top. Super simple, but you can really taste the freshness of each ingredient. (5/5) Canele de Bordeaux - This is a MUST GET. I've never had a canele that tasted as good as these. The flavors were perfectly balanced, not overly sweet, with a crunchy outside and soft interior. Literally perfection! (5/5) Viennois - A fun little way to take a shot of espresso. It's topped with whipped cream, and I was told not to mix it and just drink it all together. It was bomb. (4.5/5) White Tea - I've never had white tea before, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to taste, but this was simple and refreshing. I had it over ice, and it went really well with the meal. (4.5/5) Overall, definitely a must try if you're looking for a simple yet really good French spot in Pasadena. Everything tasted clean, fresh, and well made, and I left feeling very satisfied. Price is a bit higher than other places, but they import ingredients from France, so you're definitely getting the best stuff. A hidden gem indeed! What time do they take their last order? Maybe they should consider adding that information to their Google page, because it would have saved me a walk. Instead, our bill included a mandatory 20% gratuity, with tax applied to that charge--bringing its effective cost to approximately 22% of the food and beverage total.
