I would never write a bad review but last night I was starving and the treatment I got was extremely upsetting coming from a business I've ate from since I was a kid! I bet if we actually went to Karam instead of always getting it delivered, it would get at least another star. That said, the garlic sauce is soooo good. It makes you fart pure garlic for no less than three days, but it's so worth it. Don't order the hummus without this sauce, because you need to mix it together so the hummus actually has a taste. Don't ever order assuming the estimated SeamlessWeb time is remotely accurate -- 90 minutes is the soonest you'll get your order, if you call twice after the allotted time, they will tell you both times that the delivery guy "just left", although by the temperature your food arrives, and the flaccidness of the fries, it's almost believable. Just off the major 86th Street commercial strip in Bay Ridge, Karam is a tiny Lebanese place I've done takeout multiple times from, and eaten in a few times also. For eat-in, they have about 4 tables crammed on one side, and a few high seats at the window. On the other side is the food prep and takeout counter. A fridge in the back has drinks, including housemade ones. The takeout traffic here is brisk so eating in usually means having people jostling right by you while they wait for their orders. By recommendation, I usually get the chicken shawarma. The chicken isn't fabulous every time, but most of the time, its deliciously juicy and combined with tomatoes and other veggies, turnip pickles, and garlic sauce, and wrapped in a flatbread. I've also tried their meat pies, stuffed grape leaves (vegetarian much better than meat), string bean salad, and babaghanouj. I tried the lamb shawarma once and was unimpressed; the chicken was much better. Also usually get the housemade lemonade, nicely tart. read more

But like I said the food is to die for. I FREAKIN LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! Can't say the same for Bay Ridge but I love me some Karam's. You know what's random....I did not like Lebanese food when I was Abu Dhabi/Dubai, but I had a life altering mouth watering (pause) experience at a little Lebanese spot in hills of Montreal. And so here we land at Karam's. I actually ended up here after a Yelp Elite event, that I came late and left hungry from. Karam's is right by the train, so I stopped in and had the sharwma. You know it's good spot with it's clientele is heavily made up of it's own ethnicity. As in people, who know how to make this food on their own, still come to Karam's regularly....because it's good. I live no where near Bay Ridge...that is by all accounts out of my way. This is my favorite Middle Eastern spot in Bay Ridge. I judge all Middle Eastern restaurants by their Chicken Shawarma. Karam holds up well next to my favorite spot in Jersey City (Gypsy Grill). I walk past this place almost every day, but don't often stop in. I was in the mood for some Tabbouleh and decided now was a good time. I had been here before and wasn't a huge schwarma fan, but I figured that you need to try more than just 1 thing to know what a place is about. So I grabbed some of my usual favorites, the Tabbouleh, some Hummus, and some Kibbe. The Hummus was above average, the Tabbouleh needed some lemon and salt, and Kibbe was pretty good (worth stopping back through for). Obviously this place is known for it's delectable chicken shawarma...I love it sooo much however the garlic sauce always gives me heartburn...so be sure to take tums before and after if you have this problem. A cab driver told me that the falafel here was the best in the city. I asked him if he was sure this was the best and he raised an eyebrow at me in the rearview mirror and said simply, "I'm a Lebanese cab driver." Am I going to argue with that? No. So, I made the trek out to Bay Ridge just to experience Karam falafel for myself. I was not impressed this time around. I'm willing to give this place another try on the strength of his recommendation, but so far, Karam has been a big disappointment. The falafel platter comes with five large balls of falafel on rice, with two sides, and two warm whole wheat pitas. I chose meatless stuffed grape leaves and baba ghanoush for my sides. The grape leaves were sour, limp, and slightly slimy inside. They didn't taste bad, but the texture was off-putting. Stuffed grape leaves should be firm to the bite from a sturdy rice core and wrapped in a tender leaf. Karam's grape leaves were tough on the outside, slimy inside, and really greasy. The baba ghanoush was the best thing I ordered. You cold taste smoke and eggplant and not too much filler. The falafel balls were soggy and gritty. Not like "whole grain" gritty, like "little flecks of sand" gritty. Every two or three bites some tiny particle would crunch unpleasantly between my molars. Yes, the falafel balls contained sesame seeds and an interesting blend of spices, as the cab driver promised, but they were spongy. Spongy is falafel death. read more

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at Karam's Restaurant. There's no mystery that the sandwich to get here is the famous Chicken Shawarma, which is rated to be one of the top sandwiches in NYC. The shear quantity and variety of ingredients within the sandwich is astounding. The garlic sauce, pickles, parsley, and tomatoes compliment the chicken in such a perfect way. All of this is wrapped in a classic pita. It only took me about 5 minutes to wait for the sandwich to be made, and there was essentially no line. The chicken over rice with pita bread tasted pretty good. Instead of the chicken being chopped up completely, you can still see the pieces of chicken. It is more expensive than the halal you get from the carts, but I like the fact that you can see the pieces of chicken. As for the pastry, I don't know what it is called, but it was expensive ($1 for a piece) and it tasted mediocre. It is basically puff pastry with lots of sugar inside. In a world where gyros are a dime a dozen Karam brings some unique flavor to the mix. The main difference seems to be that many gyro spots in NYC are Turkish and Karam is Lebanese and therefore uses a different style and different spices. I have had both the chicken and the meat gyros and both were fantastic. I usually order to go but they do have sitting space although a bit tight. It is fluffy, cooked to the perfect moisture, and full of flavor. I actually think that the rice gives the chicken more flavor, rather than the other way around. Karam offers the BEST chicken shawarma I've ever had!. Middle eastern food happens to be my favorite type of food and I have eaten a lot of it all over and there is yet a restaurant to compete with karam's shawarma. The restaurant proudly decorates it's wall with articles they have been featured in praising their shawarma. Their chicken is cooked to perfection and has a crisp on the outside. The pita is filled with tomato, pickled jicama, onions, and fresh parsley. The sauce which is a Lebanese style garlic sauce is to die for!! It's thick and creamy almost like a yogurt and has the most powerful garlic taste I have ever tasted. However when the chicken is cooked they put the garlic sauce in with it which allows it to melt into the meat. This creates a delicious garlicky coat on the meat. The restaurant itself is small and cute and the staff is polite. I enjoy that they always have Arabic music playing in the restaurant, it adds to the feel. Though they got my order wrong I was still pleasantly suprised by the food. The half a chicken was succulent and filling for a mere 6 dollars. It came with pita bread, yogurt salad, and radishes . I made my own wrap and I was beyond satisfied. Really hit the craving for rotisserie chicken. Would love to go back and sample their other goodies, especially the meat pies . A few years ago I would have given 5 stars easy. But something changed he last year or two, it's not as good as it used to be. Karam was my go-to place whenever I needed a shwarma fix. They made the best, and I do mean the best shwarma in the world! Not even Barbar on Hamra Street in downtown Beirut beat them. Although they are very good, they were always second best in my book. The meat shwarma used to be the best, but the last couple of times I tried it, there was too much sauce, and the sauce just off, tasted watered down. I heard this place changed ownership, that could explain things if the new owners don't have all the good recipes. At least the other stuff they have is still good. Love their shrimp pies, and zaatar bread! Their rotisserie chicken is awesome, just the way I like it Lebanese style with the garlic sauce and pickles. This tiny Lebanese gem offers a sensational chicken shawarma wrap. I have also tried their chicken liver and beef brain (yes, brain!) wraps which were delicious as well. The foundation of ingredients for their sandwiches is the same throughout : soft flatbread, herbs,spices, the white sauce, pickled vegetables. The pickled veggies work very well to provide just the right acidic balance to the sandwich. Do yourself a favor and have mints on hand as the garlic overload will definitely hinder any potential contact with another fellow human being for some time to come. It wasn't the worst place I've ever eaten, but could have been a lot better, could have been a lot cleaner and did not measure up to the rave reviews posted in the window. We had the falafel, chicken shwarma, zataar bread and hummus. Everything was bland, yet very salty. The sandwiches were also very dry. They could have used some hummus or some kind of sauce. Also, they used lots of iceberg lettuce, bleh. The pickled turnip was a nice touch though. The zataar was my favorite thing we ordered. The owners let us order at the counter and eat at a table without charging us until we were finished which was nice of them. It's an honor system with drinks out of the cooler. This place used to have quite decent sandwich... been back to here a few days back, maybe it is one of their bad days... the meat was dry, salad in the sandwich was not fresh, garlic paste tastes like just a paste, no garlic kick whatsoever... the sandwich actually fell apart before the first bite... LOL and to top it off... they raised the price... Raising the price is ok...if they can at least keep the quality at there it was... I wasn't even expecting an improvement no more... Even though I asked to put my pita bread on the side from my chicken shawarma and paid 8$ instead of $7,garlic sauce noone even said abt other option- like tahini-still it was good.next time I came back, instead of pita I got wrap, and salad inside was kinda sour. The food is delicious! The service sucks. I've been there so many times and it very hard to get my order right. I've stopped ordering from them because I just can't deal with the headache. They either overcharge me or undercharge. When they do undercharge is when I know my order is wrong or missing items. If you are vegan, this is a good option for people with patience. I'm very conflicted about Karam. First the negative: surly staff, mediocre falafel, and over-priced. But the positive almost weighs out all the negative: best vegetarian platter in the neighborhood (which happens to not include the mediocre falafel), best lamb shawarma in the hood, best lentil soup in the hood, and deepest menu in the hood. The Kefta is also incredible, but I'm not always in the mood for that. The great thing about the vegetarian combo is that they give you literally about 5 different cold apps, plus rice or salad, and then literally three entire pitas, all for $10. That might not sound like a lot, but i's a ton of food, and that's just the small, vs. the large. And it's the only thing on the menu that isn't over-priced, but unfortunately, I always have to get the lentil soup with this order, bumping it up to $15. 16oz of lentil soup should not cost $5; I can't imagine what the insane markup is on that. But it's delicious, dammit. Oh, and I almost forgot the other thing that brings Karam up to 4 stars: their garlic "sauce". Which is actually a garlic paste consisting of fresh garlic and lemon juice. I can't describe how delicious, decadent, and breath-ruining this paste is. I just want to put this on everything I eat. And a small container, costing $1, is so strong that it's enough for like 6 meals. The only other thing they offer at a very great value. This garlic paste alone pretty much warrants 4 stars. I usually go here in person when I get off the train, but I haven't had any issues the few times I ordered delivery. Avoid the falafel, tolerate the staff, only order the food that's worth the steep price, and you'll be coming back all the time. read more
