Went to Kang Lạc in Westminster, a very old-school mom-and-pop spot that's been around for quite some time. They still have a really solid menu, and everything is very well priced. It's definitely one of those places the older generation still goes to, which honestly says a lot. I love their bột chiên selection, and they're also really known for their congee and bò kho (beef stew). They even have pastries up front, which is a nice little bonus. Overall, everything here is super decent and comforting. If you're in the OC area, I'd definitely check it out. read more

This place brings back so many memories and stirs up feelings of nostalgia whenever I come back to eat here. It was one of my family and I's go-to spots back in the day and I still love coming back every time I'm back in town-- it is one of those hole-in-the-wall locals-only places. It's nothing fancy but the food always hits the spot. It is located in the corner of a small plaza along Bolsa and parking can feel kind of cramped. Staying on brand, it's also only a cash only establishment. Don't come here expecting jolly service or bougie upholstery/modern vibesy but it's what makes the experience of eating at a local no frills eatery and I LOVE IT. Some of the staff working there I still recognize from my childhood. The menu is extensive and has everything from rice, to wet/dry/pan fried noodles. My go-tos are: 1) pan fried radish cake: it's made the Vietnamese-Chinese style where it's pan fried with egg as opposed to the classic Cantonese style that is usually sans-egg) 2) mi nam vang: delicious, comforting bowl of porky/shrimpy goodness with chewy egg noodles topped with slices of pork and a fried prawn cracker. This was my comfort food as a kid and now as an adult 3) For drinks, either the Vietnamese coffee or if you want to try something a little different HIGHLY recommend the Pandan mung bean drink If you don't choose to dine in, you can always order to go and they also have a selection of desserts/buns/other assortments at the front next to the register. Soup is flavorful and the duck leg is cooked tender. - Hu Tieu Nam Vang (Cambodian style soup with rice noodles) $11.90 - Flavor was lacking and so were toppings. This is however, cheaper than most places in the area. - Ga Hai Nam (Hainanese chicken w/ rice) $11.90 + $2.00 for dark meat - Asked for dark meat and didn't realize there was an extra $2.00 charge since it wasn't mentioned by the waiter or in the menu. For the price, you'd think the portions would be bigger. Chicken is ok and the soup that came with it was bland. The rice was fragrant and had a nice slight ginger flavor. Overall, service was so-so and food came out quickly. Prices are decent for the area, but the food didn't really stand out (besides the egg noodle w/ duck). It looks like they're known for their rice porridge and I may come back to try it. Ambiance is nothing special. Baked goods around 6 last night, many of it was sold out which is a good thing. The lady in the kitchen was doing something but I wasn't in a rush at all so didn't mind waiting. The interesting thing here was the chicken variations on the baked goods I got instead of the standard pork. Got the pate chaud, steamed buns, and sticky rice all with chicken. Pate.chaud was the best, not too thick with pastry and the chicken was great. My son liked the sticky rice but I wish the sausage was cut larger and there were more. customers need to be careful with the deceiving pricing practice. Customer needs to check the bill before paying. Otherwise you will be told one price, in our case $2.50 a bun and then the bill came out at a different price $3 a bun. Unfortunately for us, we found out we overpaid after we were home, so we called back, then we got the run around on pricing. First was told $2.50, then when we mentioned we were charged $3, the deceiving run around began. The difference in our case is only $6, it is not life and death, but... This is my husband's favorite bakery in OC specifically for their pork floss banh mi. So good, it's a brioche like bun with spring onions, butter and lots of moist pork sung. We usually get a big bag of just these to bring back up north on our way home....often they don't survive the trip. Their moon cakes and soups also always look good but we usually just come for the buns. The bakery was renovated a few years ago with a much larger display and is very neat and has several tables to grab a bit for lunch. Cafe sua da is also v good here. Parking is some of the worst in OC. There's a tiny lot with about 4 spots or you can park illegally in the lot next door. read more

Came here unexpectedly. Originally came to get pho (which is next door). But we were too embarrassed to openly tell them directly that we just decided to eat here instead. The menu is mostly in Vietnamese with English description. My sister and I did not speak or can read Vietnamese. But to our surprise, we ended up liking our food. We got the chicken porridge, meatball soup, and beef soup. I think we spoke with the owners, they gave the kids a free drink and a sponge cake. We really enjoyed the food here. Food: My mom and I used to go here frequently and we love it! However, things seem to have changed recently. We ordered chao, hu tieu, and com tom. The best thing here was probably com tom, although the sauce was still watery. It was average. The hu tieu came with the blandest soup and meat. It basically tasted like the most basic pho! The chao was also very plain and came out lukewarm! Service: As for the service, the staff was very rude! The staff belittled my non vietnamese boyfriend, persisting him to use the fork, when he knows how to use chopsticks! They were rude when we asked basic questions like, "can we warm up the chao more?" He replied with, "so you want it hot now?" As if the common standard is cold chao!? Now, this last part TAKES THE CAKE. We had a mix up of leaving a tip because originally we wanted to pay in credit, but since this is a cash only place, we had to pull together cash from everyone eating at the table. As you can imagine, it got a little hectic as everyone was coming up to the pay register to offer what they had. However, this made us forget to account for tip. I will acknowledge this is our fault. I've worked food service industry before, being a waitress for 3 years, so I always tip, even if I don't like the establishment! It was not our intention to not tip. While we were walking out, the lady came running and yelled out "HEY NO TIP!?!" with the sourest face ever! I understand feeling frustrated with no tip, cause I've been there too! But to chase customers down and to demand a tip is CRAZY. DO NOT GO HERE!!! I would recommend this place if the food is good but service bad, because it'd be worth it. However NEITHER is good! It's inside a center. When we walked in, it's looks way better and cleaner on the inside. They also had a wall with mirrors of different spaces. I admire anything that can balance out the space and make it look natural. On the other hand, food wise...It can be better. This is my second review as I was able to revisit this hole in the wall restaurant/bakery. I had the egg tart and it was just OK. The savory dishes are excellent and an amazing value. I had to have the Bot chien again, this time I was able to specify the kind with pickled vegetable (they also have plain and with taro). I brought it home (this was during Covid) and briefly pan fried the starchy dough to get it nice and crisp outside. So good and brought back memories of eating this outside my school in Vietnam. Of course Kang Lac's version is better in every way. If memory serves, I rarely had it with the egg, that was for special occasion and the bot chien then had none of the savoriness of dried shrimp and subtle crunch and saltiness of the pickled vegetable. The Mi vit tiem I brought home to enjoy the next day was legit, almost as good as the now defunct Phat ky mi gia's version. You know it's probably going to be good when they ask upon ordering "the skinny egg noodle or the wide one?" The broth was the real deal, fragrant with Chinese herbal medicine (thuoc bac) the way I remembered back in the Saigon of my youth. It came with pickled cabbage and carrot. Can't wait to go back and try other things and will soon as it's across from Phuc Loc Tho and next to A Dong Supermarket. Too bad they don't have patio seating. read more

This restaurant is a permanent fixture in my childhood. When I was really sick, my parents would get me chicken congee from here. Heck, even when I'm not sick, I'll pick up congee. It's that delicious. It used to be pretty old, but they renovated sometime in the past couple years. It's newer, the workers have changed, and they have different baked goods now, but the food is still the same. Coming here is nostalgic for me. They used to have plenty of baos, breads, and other baked goods on display. Now, they have a huge refrigerated display with more tiny cakes and macaroons than anything. I'm sure people miss all the baked goods. You should also try the bo luc lac here. It's pretty flavorful. The meat is tender. I think I finally found my place for Ho Diao. I'm still exploring Westminster, but, so far, this place has the best Ho Diao I had. Ho Diao is a Cantonese style noodle soup. It has light, clean broth with rice noodle in it. There are different varieties you can get, but the house special is the best. There's fried ship and fried shrimp chip in their version; don't get it if you're allergic to shellfish. I got the satay beef noodle soup. It was hot and spicy, which is the way I like it. The beef, well, there's barely any in it. It's very very thinly sliced and maybe like 10 slices in it. However, for $6.50 a bowl, you can't ask for more. I think they're known the most for their bao. Bao is basically a white steam bun with beef, chicken, taro, egg custard, pork or whatever sweet or savory they want to stuff in it. Their buns has large amount of stuffing which is shows true quality! For $1.50 a bun with some soy milk, you'll be stuffed. read more

There is nothing more comforting than coming here for breakfast. I grew up eating this sort of stuff so whenever I'm feeling a bit down or under the weather, a bowl of chao (or jook or whatever you call it) always hits the spot. In fact, you can have regular stuff for breakfast like a bowl of soup noodles, a rice plate, you're not confined to traditional Asian breakfast items. I haven't had food here so the review is only for their pandan kaya cake. I got my first slice of cake here when I was 13 years old, so this place has been around for a long time! I loved it a lot back then and would get some after coming out of singing practice down the street. There's 2 layers of pandan flavored pudding/custard and 2 layers of chiffon cake. It's amazing when it's fresh. They use to keep it up front where the other baked goods are but i dropped by the other day and now it's in the fridge on the side. Its also wrapped in saran wrap and not special to look at. It's been 15 years and it still tastes the same. The chiffon cake is not as soft because it's been in the fridge but it's still great for pandan lovers! I don't think you can get it anywhere else! I am so glad it's still there.
