If there is one thing you have to do: GET THE PORK BUN ! It surely is probably the best thing this side of Queens. -Bimbimbap and the Hot pot soup also did not disappoint. They are not cheap with the bulgogi like other Korean restaurants. I can't wait to come in and dine. Their prices are fair and they do have lunch specials and in-dining $4 specials. In a fairly saturated area, KAL has taken up the challenge to stand out and succeed. From reasonably priced to moderate portions and a fairly intimate setting, there's no need to look else where for Korean cuisine in Astoria. I took a chance with dining at the location as it only had 16 5 star reviews, but clearly I found a hidden gem. My plus one and I dine here during Sunday lunch service. Parking around the area is horrible but there are public transportations available. Inside there are three two tops and four four tops which means large groups are probably not going to have a great time here. The host provided us menus and water promptly after showing us to our seats. Chopsticks were set atop a piece of two fold napkin and extra settings are removed. We did not have any dietary restrictions or utensil preference, so we were able to place our order without any issues. Because it is a smaller space, the host is also the wait staff which can mean a longer service time if the restaurant is crowded and everyone arrives at the same time. I do believe it is a newer location due to the lack of reviews but once again, if you are in Astoria and craving Korean cuisine, this just might do the trick. I love the interior decor with the cool fun creative hooks for jackets. The dark grey wall has a grungy look and the bowls were all earthenware fired in a kiln with something that allows it to appear glazed by artisans from a far away land. Another thing worth mentioning is that I really did enjoy the meal and found it phenomenal. Whoa...I walked in to have a raspberry wine shot, followed by the chicken wings with wasabi and spicy sauce, and some delicious lunch special. Later on, I decided on the the brisket kimchi bibimbap which had fresh ingredients. It was a decent portion, and I found it so filling. This was strongly flavored and came with banchan of broccoli, bean sprouts, and kimchi. It was super nice how the meal came together. Great Korean food and the nicest owner! Came on a Sunday night for dinner, yes the place is small but that's the best part. Makes it all the more the neighborhood gem that it is. Ordered Galbi and bimbimbap with tofu/mushrooms. Andy (the nicest owner!) told us it would take about 20-25min min for the Galbi, which we weren't in rush to eat and it was well worth the wait. The Galbi meat is prepared with the bone, LA Galbi style but the cut was thick instead of thin. It was unbelievably good, the burst of flavor of sweet and savory . Pro tip: mix the white rice in the leftover Galbi marinade on the plate! The Galbi order came with 4 banchan (kongnahmul, kimchi, braised potato, sautéed zucchini) -all so good. Bibimbap was actually dolsot bibimbap which I missed on the menu so was pleasantly surprised when it came out in the hot stone bowl. Quickly used up the kimchi and asked for another dish of it, and Andy came back with a bigger portion! Bibimbap was delicious, all the veggies and gochujang mixed together was perfect. Another pro tip: add the Kimchi when you're mixing it all together while the bowl is still sizzling - won't regret it! All this was enough to fill 2 people very comfortably, another dish would have been too much. If it matters, the tofu was fried which I personally loved. We licked our plates clean. Andy came over afterwards, introduced himself and apologized for not checking in on us earlier - nicest person ever! We're excited to come back, we usually have to go to koreatown or flushing for Galbi and now we don't have to! My boyfriend and I finally were able to give this place a try after passing it the week before. We came in to grab some lunch and were pretty satisfied with the dishes we got. The lunch portions are the same as the regular portions and they are served with bon chon! (Always a plus!) I don't usually write review for any restaurants that already has many good reviews, but I will say that I'm genuinely impress by quality of food, price and service level of this small establishment. "KAL" (in korean means knife) is a great addition to Astoria's food destination. Appetizer such as Dduckboki (spicy rice cake), Japchae, bulgogi are especially top notch and reminds me of tastes in South Korea's night market. Seafood Ramen is my favorite so far (amazing broth for hangovers cure from Soju) and I can't wait to try other menus. I would definitely prefer to dine here over heading to flushing or Manhattan to get "legit" korean food that are overly priced and often under delivered. If you like Korean comfort food that are affordable and are great quality, definitely give them a try, you won't regret it! read more

Had lunch here. Food: Ordered a spicy rice cake, a pork bun and the bulgogi. The spicy rice cake was served piping hot, but the flavor was average. The pork bun, again, average. And the bulgogi was average. It could've used more seasoning I guess, and it was a bit too fatty and a bit over cooked. I'm a huge fan of Korean food, so I know what I'm talking about. Also, I came here on an extremely hot summer day, and they served me warm tap water (no ice). Service: Excellent. They greet you when you walk in. They were very attentive and very nice. Decor: Minimalist. The place is very small. I think there's a total of 7 tables. Also, the table that I sat at was sticky/wasn't cleaned well. Had to ask them to wipe it down. Overall, if you live in Astoria and you're too lazy to go to Ktown or Flushing, then this will sort of suffice. It's sort of "phone it in" Korean food. Im writing this review as I devour leftovers from Kal and I won't be sharing with my husband. I really can't decide which part of the dinner I loved more. We had the pork buns, fried chicken breast which were both crispy and moist, the glass noodles, spicy pork and spicy chicken entrees. Every single part of the dinner was packed with flavor. We washed it down with a bottle of Soju and Korean beers (alcohol is half off Thursday through Sunday!). Staff was friendly and attentive. Prices were great. Definitely going back. read more

With a nice variety of Korean dishes and a wonderful presentation, I really enjoyed my stay in the tiny restaurant. Do not fall for the five star reviews. They are probably from the owners. This was not a terrible Korean meal. Nor was it an exceptional one. The rice cakes in sauce were the only truly flavored dish of the evening. Dumplings were bland as was the bulgogi and kalbi. This might be a good introduction to Korean food if you've never had it before. But if you have been to truly Korean places, you'll find this lacks much flavor. Me and my friends have been loving their tofu soup and the complimentary side dishes (banchan) so much, and KAL had became our go-to option for delivery during this pandemic crisis. The tofu soup was one of the best in NYC based on my Asian taste buds, very silky and flavorful. But recently, the menu had changed and I was told that new owner took over the restaurant. Tofu soup became mediocre - tofu tastes plain and no umami in the soup, less meat/seafood, it was a major downgrade from previous version for sure. And instead of 4 types of complimentary banchan (includes my favorite - pickled bean sprouts), a small cup of kimchi and a sad salad was provided. We also ordered fried chicken (it wasn't in the old menu), wanted to know if new owners had developed any items that can become signature. Unfortunately, the fried chicken was a big disappointment. They were small, dry, and hard. It's like overnight fried chicken that get reheated by a poor microwave. I miss the old KAL very much :( read more

New menu = terrible idea. So KAL used to be my favorite restaurant in Astoria and I am sorry to say that the quality and taste of the food has spiraled since new ownership took over. For reference, I ordered 2 buns (spicy pork), 1 order of spicy pork bibimbap, and 1 order of the Spicy Ddukbokki. Firstly the original menu items for spicy pork and bulgogi bowls don't exist anymore, its just bibimbap, which really really skimps out on the meat. Secondly, the buns were atrocious to say the least. It wasn't pork belly as pictured, but instead a couple of pieces of spicy pork in a bun, extremely disappointing and lacked any flavor or texture of a pork bun. Finally the bibimbap was also not very good, it was mostly vegetables with very little meat and the spicy pork was not juicy but dry with minimal flavor. The only saving grace for the meal was the Spicy Ddukbokki which was tasty but didn't come with any rice on the side. Owners of KAL please bring back the original menu, this used to be a go-to korean spot for me, but unfortunately i don't think I will be returning after my experience. read more
