4.5 stars In celebration of the start of my husband's very first job after receiving his doctorate, we decided that a classy night out on the town was in order. I had found The Juniper through Living Social and purchased a deal to keep in my back pocket for such an occasion. So, we dressed it up a little bit and headed downtown for a special night. The Juniper definitely delivered on giving us that special evening, and we will very likely be back for further celebratory evenings in the future. Even though we were there past nightfall, it was clear that both the interior and exterior of the restaurant were absolutely beautiful. The garden is lit with simple white hanging lights, and the inside is modern and accentuated with color only by the simple pink flowers on each table. Something that I virtually never have noticed elsewhere that stood out to me here was that the chairs were incredibly comfortable. The service is that perfect balance between formal and classy while never becoming overbearing. Everything that we ordered was delivered precisely as requested, and we enjoyed the leisurely pace of our meal. As for the food, my original attraction to the restaurant had been their attitude concerning using local and sustainable ingredients as much as possible. Of course, we couldn't resist ordering their honey bread, considering all the hype and the fact that they make the honey from hives located on the roof of the hotel. It was absolutely delicious, with wonderful texture, great density, and the delicious whipped butter with honey drizzled on top. We also each ordered a glass of wine; I had the Malbec and my husband had an Oregon Pinot Grigio. Both were delicious but the white won our tastes over the red. As for our entrees, we were both overall very happy with what we ordered. I had the sweet potato and black bean terrine, which was perfectly crisped on the outside and has diverse, lovely flavor on the inside. My husband ordered the steak and it was brought rare just like he wanted it. Everything had earthy and sophisticated flavors, and outside of our desire for just a little more salt in our entrees, the flavors were completely on point. We were very happy with our evening at The Juniper and would be happy to recommend it to anyone looking for a nice, sophisticated night out. It is pricey, but it delivers on flavors, service, and ambiance, which makes it worthy of a slightly higher price, in my personal opinion. We certainly are looking forward to coming back! read more

The Fairmont Hotel is a preferred Hotel for my employer so when traveling for work I usually stay at the Fairmont. I dined at the Juniper Restaurant twice while in DC and neither time disappointed. The first night I had the pork chops mac and cheese and braised collard greens along with the honey walnut bread and homemade honey butter and it was excellent! The pork chop was tender, the greens were braised just right, a little sweet, a little bit vinegary, just as they should be. The mac and cheese was delicious and the honey walnut bread is out of this world. The second time dining, I had that day's special which was shrimp and scallops over Israeli couscous and a side of broccolini, and the Juniper salad and once again the meal did not disappoint. The scallops and the shrimp were cooked just right along with the couscous and the broccolini was excellent. I finished off with the vanilla creme brulee and it was excellent as well. read more

My husband and I love to eat out, and usually, I am pretty forgiving. However, our experience at Juniper was terrible... Both the food and the service were terrible. First, we were seated and were not asked what we'd like to order for 20 minutes. When we finally ordered, the food did not arrive for another 45 minutes. And that was only after speaking to the manager. When the food finally arrived, it was gross. My pasta was essentially covered in a tasteless Alfredo sauce with soggy veggies. Ew. My husband's bison burger (ordered medium rare) was crusted with black charcoal on the outside and basically raw in the center. The manager offered us dessert the next day... When we said that we would not be returning, she shrugged and said sorry. They did not even take off one dollar! The best part... One side, two entrees, no drinks... And the bill was $60. Want the best burger in DC? Go to Juniper Restaurant in the Fairmont Hotel (24th and M Streets, NW). If the weather is nice, sit in their outstanding patio (you'll think you're in Paris at the Bristol Hotel patio) then get their burger. The chef (James Phillips) makes the BEST burger in DC. Grinds his own meat, ffries are thick with Kosher salt, and the buns have just the right oil glow (don't go there)! Go before 5 pm. The bar makes good drinks and if you're into piano music - this is the place for the tinkle of the ivory and the tinkle of ice - with that burger. Hands down - the best!! read more

I really like Juniper. Stellar food and service in the Fairmont Hotel. Pretty decor and a knowledgeable, friendly waiter (if you go, ask for Steve) who took the time to chat with my friend and I who were there for an early dinner. Speaking of time, I'm not sure I would come here during peak dining hours as our meal was quite long, but enjoyably so. The place was nearly empty which was fine by me. The Steele Chardonnay, salmon and dessert sampler were all delicious and the prices seem fairly average for DC. I'll surely return. read more

I went last night for the first time. It was a super cute space inside. I loved the high ceiling, decor and paintings. However, the service was not good at all. She was a nice enough girl but our drinks did not come as on time the entire dinner. The food was medium at best. I got the fried chicken, which was somewhat burnt and the creamed kale, which was completely cold when it was served. We ordered the baked Alaska to split for my girlfriend's birthday dessert - it was completely burnt and tasted like a cigarette. We gave it back to the waitress. The Gnocchi was over salted and tasteless. The grilled appetizers had an overwhelming taste of kerosene and therefore, disgusting to taste and I immediately felt sick. I liked the plushness, the muted colors, the quietude. Made for a relaxing dinner. Some of the new, trendy restaurants are way too noisy. Not Juniper. Nice wine list. We had the Steele Chardonnay. Prawns and grits for appetizer. Nice fillet Mignon, arugula and mashed potatoes. Yummy. Very tender. We split the dessert sampler: creme brulee, pear mousse and raspberry crumble. The service here is terrible. We came here for brunch on a Saturday. They got the order order all wrong. Brought the appetizer and entree at the same time. And the wait for burgers and salad was over 30 minutes. It wasn't crowded - they were really understaffed. The food was good and the setting was lovely. Had a pleasant dinner sitting in the outdoor patio on a slow July evening here... I had the prix fixe deal - $35 for three courses, and added the $5 'featured' white wine (a Washington Riesling). The amuse was a small slab of heirloom tomato with a tomato relish on top and a little squirter of Basil oil - an inventive presentation, if a bit salty. Started with the Juniper Salad - the addition of fresh dill (we later learned they have their own herb garden out back when we saw the chef trim some chives) really brightened up the salad, while the +1 had a heirloom tomato salad with goat cheese. The tomatoes weren't as flavorful as I'd hope for, but were nicely dressed with a side shot of tomato water. The plus 1 got the crab cakes - crab cakes are hard to do in this area unless you use fresh local crab and season very lightly. These had a mustard base in them that hid a lot of the crab flavor, and were accompanied by a heavy corn/potato side. Much better was the Rockfish special that was topped with shrimp presented in a very asian broth - creative and delicious. Dessert was a sour cherry tart that was fresh and light. Overall I thought the chefs showed a creative spark, even at times if the execution fell somewhat short. I'd be eager to try it out again to see what else they can come up with. read more

Perfect romantic dinner for Valentine's day I brought my girlfriend there for there Vday dinner special, and really like the intimate atmosphere with a view on the lovely courtyard. We got a very good bottle of Malbec recommended by the waiter, and the butternut squash soup was exquisite... Best kept secret is their fantastic Honey bread... This is to die for: i love it... This place surprised me in a very positive way. Its in the Fairmont Hotel but don't let that sway you. The hotel location definitely does not mean a drop off in quality. If this were a stand-alone restaurant, it would feel like more of a high-end, go-to, dining option. The service was really terrific and the food was absolutely delicious, made with most organic ingredients and prepared well well. The crab soup was outstanding and since its not a bisque, its not made with a cream broth. Healthy and delicious! Everything we had here was excellent. I'm not giving it 5 stars only because I am trying to grade a little tougher and reserve that standard for extraordinary dining experiences but I feel comfortable saying that you will enjoy your meal here and not be disappointed. read more

The food was not very good. Which for a restaurant is kind of a problem. The service was excellent though. I and my friends went there for lunch on a Saturday for restaurant week. It was basically empty. They were willing to substitute the she crab soup for the soup of the day which was very nice of them and that soup was quite good according to my friends. The shrimp remoulade I had was OK but nothing special. I ordered the grouper with pumpkin risotto which was so salty as to be completely inedible and I had to send it back. They gave me a quiche instead which was fine but a bit bland. Then again there is not much you can do to make a great quiche. It kind of is what it is. The honey based dessert was pretty good although not personally to my taste (my own fault for choosing it). All in all somewhere that I would not go back to despite the nice ambiance and wonderful service. read more

However, with few people to pay attention to, our waiter barely glanced at us. No fresh pepper, a long wait to order wine..... Food - very ordinary. Beet and goat cheese salad was just okay. The pork chop was moist and tender but the "topping" was tasteless and unattractive. The desserts were not worth bothering with (not worth the calories!). No place for a "foodie"! Been for Brunch, during winter inside otherwise outside during summer and nice days. Outside summer Brunch a must in hidden gem garden that is pretty and relaxing. Inside soft and elaborate. Breakfast buffet is maybe $25 but over at 11 (arrive before 9 otherwise the selection will not be good). Fix price Brunch $45 incldes all you can drink and 3 courses. We had 2 a la carte "Good Start" and the bill was $80 after tip - but fun outside during summer. read more

Three and a half stars, but I can't round up. While walking home from Trader Joe's a couple weeks ago, the BF saw this place and commented that it looked quiet and relaxing and that he'd like to try eating at Juniper sometime. Thus, I made reservations for his birthday dinner, which happened to coincide with restaurant week. His first impression was accurate - the indoor part of restaurant was not full (even during Restaurant Week!), although the terrace was more full than empty. It was a wonderful evening to eat outside. I ordered off the restaurant week menu, and the BF ordered a three-course pot roast option which is on the regular menu. Interestingly enough, the pot roast option was less than $30 and therefore a better deal than restaurant week. Food was okay, but nothing too exciting. I don't think hee'd order the pot roast again; way too much fat. Homemade ice cream was good. This was a month ago, but none of the other dishes were memorable. Overall, a pleasant experience, but there are definitely plenty of other restaurants I'd try before returning. read more

We went for an early lunch and the waiter took our order.my son specifically told him no apples on his sandwich due to an allergy. All of the food took forever to come and when it arrived nothing was correct but the icing on the cake was that my son's sandwich came with sliced apples on it. Glad he opened it up before eating it. Went here on a Monday night (on a 1000 point open table reservation!) and was absolutely thrilled with the decor, the service, and the food. The honey walnut bread was divine. It's hard for me to give this place anything over 3 stars. First, we had dinner reservations for 7:45 but they couldn't seat us until after 8. They had a limited menu, which is fine but when they have a burger of the month and fish & chips as an option, it's hard to justify only being able to pick from a few dishes when I could have eaten the same thing down the street. Where was all the honey and bee related dishes? I also didn't like that they advertise as a $$$ "business casual" place when over 70% of the guest had on jeans. In all honesty, if we would have known this place was attached to a hotel, we would have never picked it. I'm sure it's fine for tourist staying at that hotel but it's definitely not fine DC dining as advertised. read more

People with Michelin stars in their eyes over at Blue Duck should walk across the street for dinner to Juniper, which is actually inside the Fairmont Hotel. Wonderfully prepared fresh and creative food, great hospitality, prices 20-30% lower, tables available, nice room. This place is totally a sleeper, really good and still undiscovered. And with the Fairmont hotels now in the process of being taken over by Accor Group out of France, it's only going to get better. Glad we live in Georgetown and can visit often. read more

I was glad to see a vegan menu. But, to my disappointent, the food I ordered was really bad. Miso soup had no flavor and was basically a bland broth weighed down in way, way too many green onions, served in a teeny-weeny bowl . There were a few miniscule pieces of tofu which hadn't absorbed any flavor from the broth (since the broth had no flavor to begin with), so were basically just tasteless mini-cubes floating in a sea of raw onions. I considered the vegan chef salad ($20+) so asked what was different between that and a regular-menu salad. "Dried fruit." I decided that paying an extra $11 for dried food wasn't a great decision. My friend ordered a side of asparagus, which came as she finished her entree. Interestingly, her entree was already loaded with asparagus. Why wouldn't the server have said, "Ma'am, your entree will have lots of asparagus. Would you like to order a different side?" I ordered risotto. A small bowl if pasty risotto with no flavor. Total waste of $$. I ate probably 1/3 of all of this, but paid a LOT of $$. Really, it was bad. I am a business traveler who usually finds DC to be a great place to eat, but this week's experience at Juniper showed me the other side. I assumed, wrongly, that the Fairmont would house a top-notch restaurant. Perhaps we should have taken note that the restaurant was pretty much empty! read more

The service here is slower and the food is extremely bland. You have to add salt and that is not readily available on each table. Avoid the steak as the chef doesn't know how to cook medium rare. The best part was the wine even though they brought the wrong vintage year and hoped we wouldn't notice. I would not recommend dinner here as the pricing is 4 star but the food preparation and quality is zero star. read more
