    Pasta for Rachel
    Bryan S.

June on Cambie is a must try when in Vancouver B.C.. The interior is very sleek with the dim lighting giving it a softer feel. We had reservations for 5pm but the atmosphere made it feel like it was 9pm. The service is spectacular. Our waitress was nice and very informative with the menu highlights. We ordered the Crab dip, the Pasta for Rachel, and the Chocolate Mousse (dessert). The Crab Dip is refreshing. I like that the madeleine's have a subtle citrus flavor. The Pasta for Rachel is probably the best pasta I ever had. Their take on ravioli is something special. The first bite gives a toasty taste and then you start tasting a buttery and honey flavor (Normandy Butter). The comte' cheese within the ravioli gives it a creamy texture. It is definitely a must try. For dessert we ordered their signature June Chocolate Mousse. It is light, fluffy, with a crisp base. It is served over a pool of creme anglaise which gives it a silky texture and makes it visually appealing.

We were excited to get a reservation as it's so hard to get one! The cocktails were amazing, we tried a few different ones and loved them all. The food was hit and miss. I absolutely loved the mussels and the sauce complemented the mussels so well I wanted to drink it! I really liked the beef carpaccio with the chips but my boyfriend thought it was too salty. Their famous dish, Rachel's pasta was wayyyyy too oily/buttery (as you can see from the photo) and salty. Service was good!

I was very pleasantly surprised at how good this place was! For 2 of us, we ordered the crab dip and frog legs from small plates and the pasta for Rachel and mussels from larges plates and everything was delicious. I was especially impressed by the mussels and a very close second was the pasta. Everything was incredibly flavourful and had just the right amount of texture. The sauces were paired so well with the dish and felt really balanced overall. Service was friendly and they gave us lots of great suggestions while explaining the food really well. It was a bit too loud for my liking and slightly hard to hear the person in front of me. Prices are on the high end. Without drinks, our bill came to $130 before tips for the 4 dishes. It's clear that there's a lot of attention on the details of the dish so I'd definitely recommend going for a special occasion.

Came for birthday drinks on Friday evening, 8pm. It was packed! The dining room was full with patrons waiting in the foyer. Luckily, I made reservations online and we were immediately taken downstairs to the basement bar. We ordered cocktails, a beer and fries. Pros: - Service is excellent, by far the best - Cocktails are well balanced and creative - Seating is super comfortable and plush - Vibes: DJ live spin vinyl records later in the evening Notes: - Next time, would be down to try the late night hour menu for drink and snack deals. - Free parking in the residential streets past Cambie St.

We celebrated my birthday at June tonight. Our reservation was at 5:45pm, and we arrived 13 minutes early. Upon checking in at the front desk, the hostess informed us that we needed to return 10 minutes later, as it was not yet our scheduled time. Despite there being 5-6 empty tables, we were not seated. We waited for 10 minutes and checked on the status, at which point she stated that we would be seated promptly at 5:45. Once seated, we found the dining room to be quite noisy. We began with the crab dip and mussels, both of which were satisfactory but unremarkable. Our entrees consisted of the evening's features: stable fish pretty good and ribeye steak with chanterelle mushrooms delicious. Overall, I would say this new restaurant is likely overhyped.

3.5/5! I thought it was hard to see inside the restaurant, but the atmosphere was nice. The girl who greeted us at the door and took us to our table was also very kind and allowed us to choose a different spot to sit. Since I am not a big fan of alcoholic drinks, there weren't a lot of options as this is a bar (understandably). I was hoping for there to be more fruit based mocktails, but they all seemed to have some sort of "spiced" element. I ended up getting a Spicy Daisy and I thought that it was interesting as it felt like there were different layers to the drink. I enjoyed the refreshing milky and calamansi side, but was thrown off by the ginger taste. The beef tartare was very well seasoned and it hid the "raw meat" taste so I did like it, though I prefer tartare served with bread. I think I would need to come back here to try their dinner menu and reevaluate!

June on Cambie offered a dark and moody ambiance reminiscent of art deco French nouveau. The theme was evident throughout, with the staff dressed in chic uniforms. The service was prompt and attentive, and despite being at a prime serving time at 6 PM, our drinks and appetizers arrived quickly. Surprisingly, the kitchen even gave us two orders of our truffle eggs, which we didn't mind at all. However, the close proximity of the tables created a lively atmosphere, making it difficult to hear conversations. The menu offered a variety of classic French bistro dishes, including steak frites, beef tartar, prawns, oysters, and mussels. While not groundbreaking, the execution was satisfactory, not exceptional but not comparable to French cuisine. The food portions were generous enough to share, leaving us feeling satisfied. We ordered the truffle eggs, crab dip with spiced madeleines, salade Maison with dijon vinaigrette, pasta for Rachel and steak frites 8 oz, milk chocolate mousse. I would consider returning to June, but it wouldn't be my first choice. While the ambiance and interior design were pleasant, I feel there are better French options available. Ultimately, it's more about the atmosphere than the food.

I feel like I've finally had enough time to digest my upsetting experience at June on Cambie to bring a honest review. The backstory - I've been here twice since their opening; the first time fresh within the month of their opening (pre-Lala), I had such a delightful experience, I decided to celebrate my birthday here the following month. The initial experience: 1st seating, packed, had a wonderful server (tall, slender fellow), food & drinks met and exceeded my expectations. The Drinks: ABC sour - read basic on menu, but the flavors worked so well together! Very smooth, refreshing palette, with just the right amount of punch. Blue Fizz - very sweet, muted spirit undertones, would've considered an extra shot in this one! Verdita Colada - this ones my favourite so far! The Food: June Brioche - the knob butter is really the star of the show. Solid brioche but portion size did not justify price point. Duck w/ frites & salad (seasonal, unfortunately) - this duck was phenomenal. Cooked to perfection - tender, juicy with a worcestershire-y sauce cutting right through the fattiness of the skin. This is also the dish I raved about prior to knowing it was seasonal :( Pasta for Rachel (2 attempts!) - the instagram-made-me-do-it order. I loveee fresh pasta cooked al Dante. 1st attempt, delish! A very buttery sauce base, plump little fillings, served fresh to the table. 2nd attempt, a disappointment. Served with crusty dried edges, nearly sauce free making it very bland. All neighbouring tables were served 'the IG way' with a performative table side butter service and we inquired with our server (a woman, slightly dismissive & irritated, serving a section of the back wall booths) and she clarified that the diner has to request extra butter served for the service, and swiftly left without further explanation. This is not noted on the menu, nor was it mentioned to us by our server upon ordering. Mussels - great sharing dish, portion & serve style. Very saucy and delish with the brioche soaking up the sauce. Mussels pictured from 2 visits included, both dishes look irrelevant to each other. Consistency is obviously a problem here. Halibut - regular menu item (thankful, unlike the duck breast), get the halibut for some kind of stability. Beautiful presentation, incredibly fresh halibut steak. NY Strip steak - classic steak & frites. Frog legs - not the first time having frog legs (pretty pan-Asian protein choice) served deep fried with a sweet sauce equivalent to Korean yangneom chicken, though not meaty enough. Beef tartare - housemade chips were nice, I actually liked the tartare as the drizzle of sauce toned down the gaminess of raw meats. Crab dip w/ spiced Madeline - the Madelines were solid, but the crab is occasionally too fishy to taste (1st attempt) and completely fine on another (2nd attempt). The Experience: A hit or miss? In my opinion in the scene of boutique-y dining experiences, good service anchors down the fort beyond the physical consumables. On any special occasion, like my birthday, to have bad service is literally a cherry on top for reasons to never come back - we didn't even want to bother with another round of drinks, or even do dessert to bear with our sever any longer. Beyond a prettyyy dismissive response to our inquiries, we did start the evening with over recommendations, approx. 2-3 dish each, where the neighbouring table of the same party size was only recommended 1-2 dishes a head, questionable. Perhaps I'd swing in for walk-in drinks, but no more 1-month out reservations, and definitely unnecessary to book for food quality as inconsistent as I've experienced.

finally got a reso to check out this awesome restaurant and ironically, it coincided w/world work bestie day so ofc i came w/my foodie a - she's my wrk!bestie as well. the entrance to the restaurant is rather inconspicuous but once you step inside, you are transported to a cozy, dim jazz bar - there is a bar downstairs called lala, and you will need separate resos for them. it was a raincouver-type of day so the dim jazz vibe was def a nice change. i was a little early to my reso but was seated right away - coat check was down at my seat. a ran a little late so i got started with a cocktail - orchard hiball, which is an AMAZING drink to start your dinner with. it is basically a crossover btwn umeshu and apple juice, spiked with some fizz it in. it is definitely easy to drink and i can totally see myself getting tipsy if i had a few. a finally arrived, and we - being the prepared ones - already had a few dishes in mind but our server was very friendly and advised that everything was family-style and meant to be shared. a ordered an extra dirty gin martini that our other frd, s, would be VERY proud of (s is more of a vodka girl tho). as i said, the hiball is very smooth and easy to drink so i was basically on my 2nd drink at this point - guava batida - it came in the cutest cup and a whole lot of ice. beware, this drink is boozy and quite herbal - not for someone who is just starting to drink. i personally preferred the hiball more. as a and i are both gin gals, we each essentially got a g&t afterwards - she had the mermaid gin and i had the christian drouin le gin. i've always wanted to get the mermaid gin cuz the bottle looked so nice but...ngl, it essentially tasted like sea air/water. on other hand, christian drouin was cardamom and juniper-forward - i love juniper in my gin so it was perfect. now onto the food! for starters, we had the crab dip - the plating and presentation! i have to say that all the dishes that we had was both appealing to our palates and our eyes. the crab dip is covered in chives, with dill scattered inside along with the spiced madeleines surrounding it. there was a bit of a tang with the dip so it was the perfect starter. we then moved onto our next 2 dishes - the mussels and the crispy eggplant. the 2 dishes compliment each other as they both have the salty, spicy vibes thoroughout. the mussels - if you've had HK-style stir fried seafood, you'd know exactly what i mean with the spicy, garlic and crispy frites on the top. the fino sherry sauce adds nice richness to the dish. the crispy eggplant was just an excuse for us to add veggies into the mix - but it was deep fried...at least we tried? the butternut squash ravioli is a seasonal dish - basically the same as pasta for rachel only a bit smaller and obvsly, butternut squash filling. the dish was rich, dense but not overwhelming. the truffles on top added another flavour profile to the pasta. i called this the chocolate thing but really, that's what the menu calls it too. it is the most decadent chocolate mousse with hazelnut and a crunchy bottom - the Chantilly cream was such a nice addition to the dessert. it was such a wonderful experience and im trying to plan for my next visit!

Very surprisingly satisfied. June punches all the notes for a fine dining yet hip venue. Decor is modern with lots of energy. We started with beef tartare, crab dip and frog legs - enjoyed all especially the Tartare - an interesting take where it is accompanied by house made potato chips! The mussels were awesome and so fresh. It was pre-shucked in half shells. Don't skip dessert particularly the crème caramel and house made ice cream. The white pine negroni made with Akvavit was so enjoyable - a sophisticated west coast sipping concoction indeed. Great date night location if you want to impress with your culinary coolness. I really want to come back!

Vancouver needs more places like JUNE! We live in the hood and we've been eyeing June since we saw a new lease had gone into this building. We got a reso for four last night (Friday) which also happened to be the soft launch June's underground bar, Lala. The vibes immediately cool when you step through the curtains and moody and the decor is awesome. The bar is striking and I love the outfits that everyone wears! The service is wonderful, our waiter joked lots with us and gave us his "fave" dishes! We ordered the following and here's how I'd rate them: Crab dip - LOVED want to eat a mound of it to myself. Paris Tartare - FRESH and a lovely bite of tuna Brioche - perfect for slopping up sauces Mussels - LOVED, insanely great sauce comes with. I love the textures on these too as they have little crispy garnish Frogs Legs - A MUST, no notes just so great. I simply want more! Pasta for Rachel - the famous pasta sheet, while I loved the look and was anticipating this dish, I wanted a slightly more flavourful filling, maybe sharper cheese. Pasta was beautiful tho and cooked perfectly. Crème Caramel - GORG, loved the crispy topper. Drinks wise you need to have the Veridita Colada - best drink I had. I also had the Genmaicha Clover Club which too was pretty and delish. Shoutout to Joshua who welcomed us to June and made our experience even better! Once we finished dinner we headed down to Lala and caught a glimpse of the "ice room" yes they have a room for ICE! Lala is a vinyl bar and the vibes are so right! The design is really pretty too with velvet stools and seating with a curved and sexy ceiling. The bartender Riley was great. He made excellent cocktails. A guy is spinning records the whole time and the room is buzzing. I can't wait to go back to June and Lala on the reg and try the whole menu! I'm so thrilled this spot opened. As we were leaving we also saw fellow Will and Grave Canadian, Erik McCormack waiting for a seat! Well done June! So stoked to have you in the hood.

June has been getting a lot of hype lately, I could only get a weekday reservation, and the place was packed even then. The vibe felt more like a bar than a restaurant: it was quite dark, and the music was loud. That said, the service was top-notch. They cleaned the table and changed our plates between each course, which was superb. The cocktail list was impressive (no surprise given that it's from the same owner as Keefer Bar). I really enjoyed the ABC Sour, the hojicha gave it a fun twist on a classic whiskey sour. Overall, I was pretty impressed with the food. The menu was well executed, and I genuinely enjoyed most of the dishes, with the highlights being: Pasta for Rachel ($40)I love that it's named after the chef's wife. The pasta, filled with potato and cottage cheese and served in a brown butter sauce, was pure comfort: rich, luscious, and indulgent. You really can't go wrong with carbs and butter. The entire table loved it. Steak Frites - NY Striploin ($68)Another favorite. The steak was beautifully marbled, tender, and packed with flavor. The fries were outstanding - perfectly crispy and seasoned. My friend even joked she'd come back just for the fries. Chocolate Mousse ($14)Their signature dessert that's been all over social media, complete with "June" written on top. The mousse was silky smooth with a crisp hazelnut base, a lovely textural contrast. I only wish it had a stronger chocolate flavor. Other dishes we tried ranged from average to decent, I'd probably try different options next time. Pumpkin Ganache Paris Brest ($12)A seasonal dessert with unique components like mocha and rice crispies, but the pumpkin filling was overpowering. It felt a bit like eating a massive dessert bagel. I much preferred the chocolate mousse. Crispy Eggplant ($18)A creative take on the vegetable, the texture almost made it feel like a vegetarian steak. Interesting if you are in the mood for it. Beef Tartare ($22)An interesting twist on a classic. It had more pickles (I think?), giving it a tangier, punchier flavor than traditional French tartare, which I actually appreciated. However, the chips on the side were too oily and detracted from the dish. Le Petit Chapeau Pâté ($24)My least favorite dish of the night. The pastry was dense and unappealing, and the pâté itself was chunky yet bland. The salad and cornichons on the side helped a little, but I'd recommend skipping this one

(4.5/5) Finally got to try the highly anticipated June on Cambie. It is required to make a reservation at this time if you'd like to dine during peak hours on the weekend. Although we came a bit early, the hostess managed to seat us at our table. The non-booth tables are quite close together so be mindful of that if you require accessibility. The restaurant is warm but dark with minimal lighting and kind of reminds me of a jazz bar - 10/10 ambiance and great for dates and celebrations. Below is also a basement bar called Lala which I hope to check out one day. Our server came by promptly and took our drink orders. I loved the Sunflower Punch - the clarified and carbonated milk punch made it refreshing while the sunflower seed and tarragon provided floral and herb notes. It's a delicious fall drink! For the appetizers, we went with the liver mousse feature and the beef tartare. Both were staple wins in my book. The mousse especially was the star of the night for me as it paired really nicely with the sliced mini grapes and rosé jelly, a true sweet and savoury dream. The crostini to pair was also soft!! This was so pleasant as opposed to harder cracker like textures that sometimes hurt my mouth to eat. Tartare flavour and texture was also perfect with enough tartness and aroma. Potato chips were an interesting choice but I wasn't mad at it. Next was the steak and my goodness it was perfectly cooked and paired with a delicious and rich brandy sauce. The fries were also fried to the most perfect brown and had wonderful texture. My only wish was that it came with a couple pieces of roasted vegetables. Pasta for Rachel was extremely buttery and rich which was fun for my tastebuds, but not for my weak stomach. Finally, we were hesitant to order dessert but the server highly recommended the chocolate. While the presentation was simple, I was blown away by the texture and taste! The dessert essentially reminded me of a very classy chocolate mousse with something crunchy at the bottom paired with condensed milk and cream. Definitely a must order if you like chocolate. Overall the night was seamless and wonderful. I found the prices for the appetizers and mains to be fair as well. I would definitely love to return!

The entrance is completely unmarked, with darkened windows and no signage; you literally have to decide whether to push or pull your way into the gloom, which fits the "thief" theme perfectly once you step inside. Inside, the space leans into a **chic** speakeasy ambience, only slightly undercut by 90s chillout tunes that are a touch loud but still on-brand for a laid-back late-night hideout. The food is where things really land. Frog legs arrive as the star curiosity and end up tasting strikingly familiar--so much so they echo the famed chicken wings from Anh and Chi in both comfort and flavour. The beef tartare is properly seasoned and genuinely delicious, rich but balanced enough that it never feels heavy. Ox tail is a unique inclusion on the menu and it follows through, offering deep, slow-cooked flavour that stands out even among the stronger dishes. Duck breast is cooked to a textbook pink, tender and juicy, an easy "order again" plate. Dessert keeps the momentum going. An oolong peach creation acts as the perfect finishing touch: fragrant, slightly floral, and just sweet enough to close the meal without tipping into cloying territory. Service and atmosphere reinforce the sense of a discreet drinking den--this is the place you duck into for a properly made drink and a series of small plates, not a high-traffic scene bar. With nothing to complain about--from food to vibe--The Good Thief feels like a well-executed concept: a hidden, unmarked bolthole where you slip in from the dark, linger over excellent plates, and slip back out just as quietly.

We ordered the Dark Spell Latte, Albedo Spritz, and Final Word. The Dark Spell Latte is like an espresso martini with chocolate syrup added, which is pretty solid. The Albedo Spritz is a red wine cocktail with hard liquor, and stood out to me as they had 5oz of alcohol so this was fairly strong, but I would imagine most of the ounces came from the wine itself. My friend at least received a drink, but I ended up sitting there drinking water for over an hour and left with an empty stomach. My dad accidentally ordered a chocolate martini instead of an espresso martini, and Aaron made it happen. (The entire table loved it! Take that poured over some ice cream and I'd be far too content!) My brother had the gin martini, and while not a fan of gin straight up, it had a nice smooth finish that I could appreciate.

Initially perplexed,…read moresince our Uber dropped us off one block away, we had no idea where we were in the dark of the Canadian night. Surrounded by warehouses, did the driver want us to experience a "call of the wild?" However, Odd Society beckoned one block from the corner, and two seats were available at the strange bar. Strange because our view was blocked by a kind of ersatz plastic and wood wagon wheel blocking our view of the servers and bar. It was reminiscent of Utah's Zion Curtain. Later, I was told it was part of Odd Society's Covid protection and helped the bartenders stack things up. Okay, fine, but tear the damn things down. They're obnoxious. Odd Society creates an array of liquors made from ingredients sourced locally by law. It's required by their license. I tried almost all of them, and most were fantastic. Abby and Colin, our servers, were charming, fun, and educational, answering my questions, which became increasingly inane as the alcohol took effect. The distillery also mixes fantastic cocktails, and mine, named Midori, was friggen unbelievable. I had two of them along with my liquor tasting. My Midori was made with a special concoction called Portuguese Sweet Milk, or something like that. It was amazing. I want one for breakfast. The fun kept coming, and I didn't want to leave. Alas, we had reservations at Lunch Lady up the street. We should have stayed at Odd Society. Lunch Lady was a disappointment. Try Odd Society out as both a distillery and cocktail bar. You won't be disappointed about either one.

In summary, the place was ok, but noticed after the fact that we were overcharged for the drinks. It's a small space - about 3 high tables, one lower one, each seating 4 to maybe at most 5 people, plus a bar. I reserved a table for the 2 of us at 3:30 pm on a Sunday (earliest reservation they had as they open at 3 pm) and we were seated at 3 pm. They checked our vaccine passports and then seated us. Not long after we were seated, the remaining tables were all taken just after opening for 30 minutes so I would recommend reserving if you prefer tables over bar seating. The waitress brought over a drinks menu and food menu. The menu showed cocktails at $13. We chose our drinks and ordered, then the waitress came by with a second menu that she said was for Sunday only. She apologized and said she normally doesn't work Sunday's so she didn't know this promotional menu was available. This menu had some cocktails on promotion that I would have not minded to try, but I had already received my cocktail. Oh well. I had the Violet and Claire, which looked great and tasted pretty good for the first half. However by the second half of the drink, it started to taste too sweet. It was not bad for a cocktail, overall. My friend said the Smoke Between the Sheets cocktail was alright as well. We got our bills quickly as we had a second place to visit afterwards. After paying, I snapped a picture of the bill at the time but did not notice until I got home that to my surprise, each cocktail was listed on the bill at $14.95. I recalled their physical menu saying $13, and verified this with their menu online. Unfortunately, I did not notice the discrepancy until I was home, otherwise I would have mentioned something. Note that our visit was at the end of November 2021, and at the time I'm writing this review (December 26, 2021), their online menu still has cocktail prices at $13. So, I am not sure if this was a one time mistake when we paid, or if they have just forgotten to update their menu? Either way, this was disappointing. Because of the entire experience I probably won't visit again, especially with all the other options Vancouver has for cocktails.

Service was exceptional. Both the maître d' and our server were friendly and helpful. We opted to order from the regular and seasonal à la carte menus for dinner: - Brezeln - The pretzel buns were soft and warm and we could not resist putting a big glob of the honey cultured butter on every bite. - Octopus - The tentacles were tender and springy at the same time. The slight heat from the sauce was perfect in cutting through the richness of the meat. - Chicken fried maitake - The coating was very flavourful but we found the the seasoning a bit too heavy. - Scallops - They were fresh and sinfully delicious with the sauce. - Sunchoke Dumplings - A dish with simple ingredients but it was easily the most flavour rich and balanced dish of the evening. - Hunters Chicken - I like that both dark and white meats were served on the dish. Although I generally stay away from white poultry meat but all the pieces were tender and juicy. The seasoning was a bit on the saltier side for us though. - Hay - The custard dish was interesting and we were told it's been the most popular dessert offering since the restaurant doors opened. It reminds me of a deconstructed tres leches cake from a restaurant on the North Shore years agar when I was hoping for a good piece of cake.

I skipped the sushi wrap, sticking to my traditionalist ways, but my friend enjoyed it. Brownie bites, complimentary as they were, were a disappointment. Lacking enough fat and possibly stored improperly, they tasted a bit stale -- a shame, because how does a brownie not taste good? It should be so much more, but the food lets down the entire experience. Our service was good, with delightful people helping our experience. That said service is slow, with details that should be spot on, not even evident. Water glasses left empty forever, promises made, not even brought up again. When the reservation was made a question was asked of an event for the dinner out. A 60th birthday was mentioned, acknowledged, and when sat by our server and nothing further. To be fair K would rather it all go by unannounced, but when it's all over the paperwork a small recognition should be there. The space itself, is not on a rooftop at all, but it's a beautiful high ceilings restaurant that deserves a far better kitchen. Our price fixe menu for two at $155 or so was definitely not worth the price at all. The steak was uniformly medium when med rare was the ask. There was a tiny bit of medium rare at one end, but the vast majority was medium or more. The torch of the butter on the steak, looked good from afar prior to our serving, but right in front of you looks almost comical. Our breakfasts were average at best, again service was ok, but the food was not where it should be, in fact not even close. We'd ponder staying at the hotel again due to location, but we'd not eat here.
