Chic, mysterious, and just a little mischievous, The Good Thief is the kind of spot that feels like a secret you are almost reluctant to share. The entrance is completely unmarked, with darkened windows and no signage; you literally have to decide whether to push or pull your way into the gloom, which fits the "thief" theme perfectly once you step inside. Inside, the space leans into a **chic** speakeasy ambience, only slightly undercut by 90s chillout tunes that are a touch loud but still on-brand for a laid-back late-night hideout. The food is where things really land. Frog legs arrive as the star curiosity and end up tasting strikingly familiar--so much so they echo the famed chicken wings from Anh and Chi in both comfort and flavour. The beef tartare is properly seasoned and genuinely delicious, rich but balanced enough that it never feels heavy. Ox tail is a unique inclusion on the menu and it follows through, offering deep, slow-cooked flavour that stands out even among the stronger dishes. Duck breast is cooked to a textbook pink, tender and juicy, an easy "order again" plate. Dessert keeps the momentum going. An oolong peach creation acts as the perfect finishing touch: fragrant, slightly floral, and just sweet enough to close the meal without tipping into cloying territory. The menu has lots of interesting cocktails, some unusual and other more classic. We tried the tasting menu which has almost every dishes from the menu. Everything was very tasty and delicious. I would say it was too much food for me and a bit too rich but still worth the price. Our favorites were the bone marrow, the dungeness crab garlic noodles, the wagyu beef tartare and duck breast. Cute spot on Main Street! Reservations were easy to make online. I was feeling snacky so I came before my reservation time and they were so accommodating and seated me right away. I love the Midcentury Asian vibe inside with dim moody lighting. Great spot to gather with friends or on a date. For drinks, I got a non alc Hoi An Nights. It had a very interesting flavor profile. Unique but just a tad sweeter than I would have liked. For food, I got the Sun Seeker Oysters, Wagyu Beef Tartare, and the Fremantle octopus. The oysters themselves were fantastic. Fresh and juicy. I do not think the foam paired well with it at all. The foam was sweet and it reminded me of having cupcake frosting on top of something savory. I ended up scraping the foam off my oysters. The wagyu beef tartare came out a beautiful bright red/ pink color and I liked that it wasn't as eggy as traditional tartare. We went and tried their dine out menu. It is $70/person and every thing is served family style. The food tasted good especially the crab noodle. However, we thought it was too expensive for the portion served. Both my partner and I were still hungry after the meal. We were quite shocked when they asked us to choose 1 of the 2 desserts and had to share it. We expressed our disappointment to the server, and he was very understanding and thanked us for our honest feedback. He offered us another dish of our choice from the menu on the house. Great meal, great drinks, great service. Good thief definitely surpassed my expectations. We did the tasting menu ($85) and had a couple cocktails. Everything was really good to great. Highlights include the oysters which had a lovely Thai coconut foam, and the pho dac biet cocktail which blew us all away by capturing the essence of pho but also still being a bourbon based cocktail that you'd want to sip on. This place sounded interesting and as a fan of Ahn and Chi I was excited to go with some friends. The place is small. As a party of 6 you can only really sit by the entrance or the table over. Immediately we found the reservation system not so seamless. With their tasting menu, you had 2 time slots to choose from but the 5:30 time only gave you 2 hours. We choose the 7:30 time slot which cost more but gave you 2.5 hours. We are still unsure if it was the exact same menu as the earlier time slot but I don't see how it can be different. After our experience it would not have been possible to finish all the dishes within the 2 hours. The food was very good. Flavors were bold and presentation was very nice. The only thing was that nothing really stood out for me as amazing; there was no dish I would return for. The amount of food was on the larger side in my opinion. My group did find it strange that they gave us some pickled items (carrot, lotus root, radish) and taro chips to start but it was so tiny and few you could only try one maybe two things. I would however go back but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. The cocktails looked interesting and the drink I got was good. Date night with the girls at Good Thief, and the vibes were immaculate! This cozy little place, located on trendy Main Street, is great for drinks and little shared bites, and I'm glad I tried this place after hearing so many good things about it. Starting with drinks, I opted for the Hoi An Nights, which features a gin base with floral and tart hints of mangosteen, lychee, and jasmine. I think the flavours interact very well and were pleasing to the palate, especially for those who enjoy tart cocktails without the lemon/lime flavour. We decided to share a variety of dishes, starting with the corn appetizer feature. The corn was seasoned with a delicious sauce that I forgot the profile of, but it was sweet, salty, and sour all at the same time and reminded me of fish sauce but better. Texture-wise, the girls and I found it just okay, as it was a bit chewy (likely because it was seasoned with something wet). Next, we sampled a few skewers (beef and chicken hearts(?) as I recall). The skewers were well-seasoned and standard for what it was. We also ordered the pomelo salad as a palate cleanser, and although it did its job cleansing, I felt it was not a strong or memorable dish otherwise. The frog legs were the star of the show! I was pleasantly surprised by how juicy and tender they were - almost a cross between chicken and fish. My friend also loved the pomme frites, especially the thickness of the crispy potato, combined with the Thai green chilli aioli. Last but not least, the bone marrow paired with milk buns was an interesting take. I think each tasted well on its own, but I would probably prefer the marrow paired with a different type of bread. I think overall, the portion sizes were good considering the bar bites nature of the restaurant. The server was also really kind and helpful in giving us suggestions on menu items. Truthfully, I was in doubt to try Good Thief as they are still quite the 'new kid' in town for post dinner drinks, especially since I was coming here for a special-ish occasion. Luckily, we had backup plans in any case walk-in was a no go. I was even less hopeful about the place with their $10 per head donation reservation system - which feels a bit forced, and felt a bit like contributing to the corporation's year end tax deduction (but unfortunately, not mine), bright side: funds are being donated. Initially we attempted to do a walk-in reservation for the evening to be informed they don't do that, and we will have to return at the time of and the wait is typically 45mins as they are likely going to be full house (slightly baffled but yes, we were told that). Final attempt for seats, post dinner prime time for drinks - walk-in to our surprise, half the seats empty and we were "lucky" to grab a table! From the menu, I liked that the lineup of drinks ranks from fruity sweet to dry, with tasting notes paying homage to Vietnam's rich food culture. To my surprise, all four drinks that our party ordered was delicious - each encompassing the perfect balance of fruity sweetness, dryness from the alcohol and accents of flavour that complemented each and every ingredient so well. I would consider this a very rare occasion that all drinks ordered hit the spot. I also loved the small plate of pickled veggies that punched very hard to cleans our palettes along the way. The food is excellent, the halibut and frog legs were especially tender and flavourful. The pomelo and lotus root salad was fresh but could use more complexity, and the oxtail is quite rich. The drinks we got were both a bit too spicy though this is personal preference, otherwise the Hoi An Nights and Six Inch Yellow were tasty. Pricey but delicious and great vibe. When they say walk-ins are welcome they mean it and if you go after 8pm on a weeknight you wouldn't need a reservation. Getting the tasting menu is the best way to try everything but they have an a la carte menu and a late night menu if you like to pick your own or just get a snack. Our bill for two can to 125 before tip which was generous and well deserved. Some of the best service we've had in 3 years in Vancouver. The server was able to recommend both drink and food choices. Some of the dishes we got were the frog legs, foie gras parfait, octopus, the daily bintaro and pomme frites. The stand out for us was the octopus which was cooked perfectly and so tender and was a fully composed dish. The frog legs were bigger and juicier than the ones I'm used to in France and tasted more like chicken. It was good portion size so get those if you like chicken legs. The foie gras parfait was a slab of foie gras pate and some marinated chantrelle served with bread. It was delicious but not as rich as foie gras pate I've had before. The daily binchotan was tiny like it is traditionally, 2-3 bits of organ meats and delicious, twice in price what it would be Asia for cost. The pomme frites we were divided on, the French spouse said they were like American tater tots and liked them. I found them a bit too starchy and needed more of the oxtail gravy and there was far too little cheese curds, the portion is good and I can see this being a great meal if you are just doing a late night snack. They do have a late night menu and while it's not served till 2am which is what I desperately want in Vancouver it's later than most restaurants so I will be coming back for that as well as to try the rest of the menu. In atmosphere this place reminds me of Expatriate in Portland, a fave for late night dining with an Asian fusion menu and an atmosphere based on 30's Singapore Raffles. Good Thief's decor is more 60s Saigon but it's got that moody but relax vibe. It's just got such a good feeling about it and makes you want to order one more drink. There are booths which are super cozy. In the the summer there is a large outdoor space on the sidewalk but I prefer the feeling when it's dark and stormy. The cocktail menu is a big part of the place and as a non-drinker and the French spouse being a picky boozer we found the selection to be fabulous but expensive especially for the non-alcoholic drinks. Of course no one forced us to have 16 dollar non-alcoholic cocktails and we will have them again and try all of them...for research of course. All in all, this is the type of the place if you want a cozy but fancy vibe, comfortable that you will want to go regularly but your bankbook might not be as comfortable with that. It's listed as Michillen bib gourmant which is 2 courses and a wine for under 60 and if you are doing the late menu you can do that but if you are coming for a full meal I would expect 80 per person with tax and tip. read more

Service Quality: Upon being seated, we were promptly introduced to our server for the evening. Since it was our first time at Good Thief, she took the time to explain the menu and the restaurant's concept. Throughout the night, our server was attentive, quickly taking additional drink orders and checking in on us regularly. Menu Variety: The food menu at Good Thief is relatively small compared to their extensive drink menu. However, despite its size, the menu showcases a range of dishes that reflect the region's flavors. There's a bit of everything, including vegetables, meats, and fish, offering something for everyone. We chose two items from each of the three sections of the menu, which proved to be a great amount of food for two people. Food Presentation: The food at Good Thief is plated with great care. The standout presentation was the fish special, where one of the chefs personally came out to explain the dish, took it back to the kitchen, and then returned to cook it three different ways before pouring the sauce tableside. Both the starters and mains were presented beautifully, with attention to detail. Food Taste and Quality: Pomme Frites: These were amazing, likely double or triple fried to achieve maximum crunch and crispiness. They paired perfectly with a Thai green chili aioli, and the fried curry leaves added a surprising and delightful bite. Frog Legs: Fried and coated in Mẹ's fish sauce glaze, these frog legs were both sweet and spicy. If you've never tried frog, this is the time--it tastes similar to chicken but with more bones and cartilage. The dish was cooked to perfection, although the glaze was a bit heavy in my opinion. Bone Marrow: I often find bone marrow portions disappointing, and this dish was no exception. Despite the flavorful 'pho chimichurri,' we only got three to four good bites out of it. For the price, I wouldn't order this again. Beet Salad: After the heavier, oilier dishes, the beet salad was a refreshing change. The addition of blood orange provided a citrusy brightness that lightened our palates, while the crunch from rice crackers balanced the soft textures of the beets and oranges. Oxtail: I initially expected a whole oxtail, bone and all, but Good Thief takes a different approach. They remove the meat, roll it in a dough wrapper, and coat it with a pho demi-glace. The meat was tender and paired well with the potato, daikon, and carrot purée. The Southeast Asian flavors were bold and not to be missed. Halibut Special: Offered only on Saturdays, this dish features halibut prepared three different ways--fried, grilled, and possibly steamed (I can't recall the exact methods). Each preparation was flawless, with distinct flavors, including a light lemon/citrus sauce on the grilled piece, a pesto-like sauce on the fried one, and no sauce on the third. At $64, this dish is a bit pricey, but it's a must-try. Our small table could barely accommodate all three plates. Drink Selection: We explored a wide variety of drinks at Good Thief. I recommend asking your server for suggestions based on your flavor preferences--they'll find something amazing for you. One of the more interesting drinks was their pho cocktail, which involved fat-washing to infuse the alcohol with the rich flavors of pho. Price and Value: Drinks at Good Thief average a little over $20 each, which is on the higher side, especially since they could use a bit more alcohol for the price. The food, on the other hand, is priced reasonably for a high-end restaurant, though it is slightly more expensive than their sister restaurant next door, Anh and Chi. Captivated by the amazingly creative cocktail menu, my friends and I were in for a treat when we managed to get a table at 5:30pm for a quick pre-dinner visit. I really love the tropical flavors and molecular gastronomy elements that go into each offering, and after coming here, I think this is a place that actually delivers on that experience. Good Thief just opened to public last/this week, so we made an effort to go there around opening time and we were able to be seated quickly. When we were leaving, all of the tables were full since the space is quite intimate and smaller than Anh and Chi. Our server was jovial, friendly and attentive, and gave us a walkthrough of the cocktail menu with their own favorites, which we greatly appreciated. The complimentary welcome snacks were also delicious and I could've had a whole bowl of those taro/lotus root chips. We ordered the Hoi An Nights, The Good Leaf and Pho Dac Biet. The Pho one immediately captured my attention before my visit and actually having it was unlike anything else. The flavors were perfectly replicated in the drink and carried through the palate like a whisper. I had to remind myself to savour it instead of downing it like soup. The story behind The Good Leaf was interesting in how they pull out the mint oils through the oleo process to create a more flavorful experience for the drinker. The drink will progressively get more impactful as you finish it and it's super refreshing for a summer day. Hoi An Nights was like a night time drink for me, but the combination of all the ingredients worked to create a silky bevvy and played more on the fruity side rather than dessert which I liked. We tried the pork chops, rib eye, zucchini & frog legs and everything was solid. I have to say i was a little squeemish about eating frog legs but they were actually my favorite dish of the night! Being the sister company of Anh & Chi, I had to make sure I got in for the soft launch as I wanted to make sure I could provide feedback. The attention to details on their decor from their lighting to the stories of each drink, you can tell the owner spent a lot of time and love into bringing the Vietnamese culture to Vancouver with a modern twist. We tried quite a bit; pommes frites, whelk, bone marrow and oxtail. My favor drink was the six inch yellow. I've since been back twice and have always left with a great experience. We made a reservation for 5 ahead of time (donated $10/person to charity) and glad we did as the restaurant is small and was packed shortly after we sat down. It's dark inside but has a well-designed interior. Food was 10/10 amazing! We loved all the dishes we ordered. Highlights were the frog leg, oxtail and crudo. Dishes came in a timely manner and overall a pleasant dining experience. There were a couple of minor things to note from my experience: 1. We reserved a table for 5, but when we walked in, they had given us a table for 4 and expected us to squeeze in. We weren't happy about this as it was tight so we asked for an extra chair so one of us could sit at one end of the table instead. Staff were accommodating to this. 2. When we got the bill, we noticed that they had charged GST + PST, strangely, as we normally do not pay PST in Vancouver dining in and currently still on the GST tax break. Wow. This place is definitely one of my favourites. We were in the area right before they opened at 5pm and decided we will finally get to try it out. For reservations they collect $10 per person and donate to a different charity, otherwise you would have to walk in and hope for a table. We were seated right by the entrance and couldn't help but notice how great it smelled. They do a custom blend of oils in a diffuser, and it smelled like all my favourite fragrances combined together. Our server went through the specials and the menu with us when we were ready. We decided to go with the skewers, the pomme frites, octopus, beef tartare, and oysters. My top three would be the oysters, beef tartare and pomme frites, would definitely order again. The pomme frites were nice and crispy on the outside and inside was super pillowy with deep fried basil leaves, and the oysters had good umami and very indulgent with the cream on top. For drinks my top three would be pho dac biet, hero's hanh trinh, and a juicy tale. Each very different, hero's hanh trinh is definitely more on the stiff side and the juicy tale was very refreshing and light to start off with. Pho dac biet was definitely the MOST unique drink I have ever had. At first I was a bit iffy on trying a drink that tasted like a pho, but was recommended so I tired it. Been there a few times already. Perfect counterpart to their sister resto anh and chi next door. This one is french-esque and west coast food with Vietnamese flavours. Great drinks. Fun takes. Reasonable share plate prices. My favourite was the frogs legs. They are done very well here. Definitely worth a night with friends or a date. Food is good, but it should be for what they charge. Cocktails are good but they are $22 which is the same as Botanist, a bar in a downtown hotel. And more than The Keefer, which is an excellent bar. However, what really gets under my skin is their fee based reservation policy And I will never patronize a restaurant that has the default tip option at 20%. They got me one time and one time only. Best aspect was ambiance, service was good. Very accommodating to guest with food allergy. Only one beer available, Pilsner. Had a $20 cocktail which tasted like usual mojito with too much ice. Pomme frites was bowl of regular cut French fries, indistinguishable from McCain frozen ones I do at home. Beets were plain tasting, nothing special. Crackers on top of beets were more tasty than the beets. Halibut similarity not tasty, plain white fish wrapped in tasteless rice paper or something, topped with sliced radishes, totally bland. Rib eye was pretty good tasting but had sizeable gristle for such a small piece of meat, like 4 oz? I would go back for drinks but def not supper, food we had was very boring. read more
