I didn't appreciate the food. The service was fine. It gets very loud and hard to hear across from you. The seats and bench are uncomfortable. The dishes are visually appealing but didn't satisfy my craving. Mango Sticky Rice NA drink was more coconut and pandan than mango, and had a weird aftertaste. The prawns in the tom yum were fresh. They forgot our rice and I asked once after seeing other tables get theirs, we finished half the soup before they came back to us. The shrimp toast was soggy and bland. Steak Nam Prik had tough pieces of tendon or silverskin throughout and made it hard to enjoy as an endive wrap per their recommendation. AMAZING AND PHENOMENAL AS ALWAYS! Coincidentally my sister and I made reservations at this restaurant at exactly the same date and time and they were able to join us in one table. Good food must be shared with great company indeed! We came almost at the end of Happy Hour and we were still able to enjoy the HH menu. Even if menu hasn't changed much, every dish was jaw dropping. It's been a while since my actual visit to Song and seems like the menu has changed (which I like as they try to keep it seasonal). Place looks unassuming from the front but food is overall good with interesting cocktail options. A bit of an upscale pricing for relatively smaller plates, so make sure to order more dishes for the table. Out of the dishes we tried, the stand outs for me were the pomelo salad and barramundi chili garlic. The blue mango sticky rice was very eye-catching irl. Finding this place was a little bit tricky as the restaurant is super unassuming. You could walk by it every day and not even know it was a restaurant situated right in front of the EAST Broadway bus stop. Let me tell you though, if you love Thai food, you cannot miss this place. Every bite was sensational and it will take you on an Asian journey of tantalizing delights. While the restaurant itself is a bit crowded as you're seated back to back with other guests, you'll soon be more focused on the food rather than the insanely loud volume of the patrons who seem to love yelling at the top of their lungs. Song by Kin Kao absolutely deserves its Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition (2022-2024). We arrived right at opening and were lucky to grab two spots at the bar without a reservation. The service was friendly and attentive from start to finish. We shared several dishes and they were all fantastic. The Laab Wings were crispy and packed with bright lime and herb flavor. The Papaya Salad had great balance and freshness, not too spicy but full of character. The Pad Kra Pao Beef was the standout: incredibly tender, slow-cooked beef with shishito peppers and just the right amount of heat. The Pad Thai with Prawns came with four huge prawns and a rich, sweet-savory sauce, a comforting classic done perfectly. Everything was beautifully presented, portions were generous for sharing, and the atmosphere was lively without being loud. Highly recommend trying both a classic and something new from the menu. One of THE best Thai restaurants I've ever been to!! Heads up though this place is really small, so book in advance. Also it's $$$ and 20% tip is automatically added for parties of 5+. We went for our mom's birthday and ordered 5 appetizers and 3 mains. Came here for a quick dinner. The waiter is really kind to let us in ten minutes before last call for kitchen. We ordered quickly for a quick dinner. The pad Thai only comes with tofu at $29. So we added on prawn. I really enjoy the quality of the prawn add ons, which is additional $8 dollars, fresh and tender. The stirred vegetable is good, but feels a bit too spicy for me. Had a harder time getting more water, because they were busy. These two dishes we paid more than $70 for it, it does feel pricy. Overall, good quality food, just on the pricer side. read more

An unassuming-looking gem of a restaurant. Popped in on a whim early on a Friday night and was seated at the bar. I imagine it gets busy later - it should, the food and drinks are truly excellent. Service was exceptional. Food came out quickly and with great attention to detail. The servers and bar staff were knowledgeable and clearly know their craft. *Food* Fanny bay oysters - Quite the treat. A good amount of spicyness and a bit of crunch on top for texture. One of the better oysters I've had in a long time. Garnished for you so you're not guessing on the right amount to add. (Oysters are $9 for happy hour, $12 regularly) Shrimp toast - comes with 3 pieces and a sauce for dipping. Fun and flavourful, but quite heavy. If solo or not super hungry, I'd say get the oysters. This is more of a share plate. Seafood curry - a medley of seafood that comes with jasmine rice. The king prawns were the highlight. Not overly saucy and quite spicy. The dish is good, but i wouldn't get it again. The Pad Thai and Crab rice are two of their more popular menu items and likely better (though also heartier). Portion sizes are generous. You won't leave hungry, you may leave with carry out containers. They have an incredible sounding tasting menu for $75pp. Will try this next time I go. *Drinks* Cocktail - Tried the "Moonlight in Krabi"l. Fun and fruity, not as smokey as I was expecting but very vibrant and quaffable. Just the best Thai food, ever. No restaurant more deserving of all its awards. The pomelo salad was so special. It was straight up pomelo and nuts and some sauce, and you spoon it into a leaf. Mmmmm. Best chicken wings on this planet. I think they split the wings in half before cooking, which I think everybody should start doing. I feel like my only qualm with chicken wings is having to deal with the two bones. Here, I only had to deal with one bone each time. The wings were a little spicy, a little sour, a little peppery, and just divine. I'm deeply passionate about fried rice and have terribly high standards for any fried rice. This crab fried rice tho. Holy fragrant and just crispy enough. Flavors further elevated by the cilantro sauce on the side. None of us have ever liked pad Thai. This pad Thai will forever live in my mind. Solid Thai food, though perhaps more ostentatious than delicious. I've been twice now. First time I just ordered one a la carte curry and it was fine. Second time my friend and I got the tasting menu, which was also good but not as good as I'd been hoping. The meat is cooked well and everything is pretty good but relatively forgettable. I've had deeper flavours from some much more unassuming (and cheaper) Thai takeout places. Drinks were good and service was attentive. Ambiance is hip and cozy - could dress up or down. Overall, more of a 3.5 star, mostly because I feel the value isn't there if I've had better flavours from places that cost half as much. I came here with my sibs and one of their friends. The server was very patient and helpful with great recommendations about dishes as one of our group is GF only and strict. It is one of the reasons e came as they have GF and V options. All the food and their spirit free drinks are great. The pomelo salad was fresh and tasted amazing; it made us feel like we were in Thailand having an authentic meal. The soup and pad Thai were both excellent and authentic. Thai food is my favorite cuisine and I was so excited to try out the menu at Song now that they've reopened. Happy hour was great, we ordered almost everything on it. The cloud over Siam mocktail was one of the best drinks I've ever had, I loved that it was inspired by tom yum soup. The oysters were fabulous, so many flavors in one bite! The happy hour steak salad had a generous portion of meat, which was unexpected, but greatly appreciated. The pad kra pao had fillets of beef instead of the typical ground beef, which was different, but so tender and succulent, and the shishito peppers added a welcome kick! I went with a party of 6 for a birthday. We got the tasting menu and every dish was excellent. To start off I got the Cloud over Siam non-alcoholic cocktail, which was pink and refreshing. The coconut foam on top took it to the next level and I will have to go back to get this again. The dishes came out well spaced out in timing and the servers presented each dish with knowledge and passion. The flavors were worthy of their Michelin bib gourmand and each was beautifully plated. I would say it was Thai food in essence but definitely a modern-elevated take. Their use of colorful ingredients and edible flowers make each dish a feast for the eyes and worthy for the gram. I've had several tasting menus in the city and for the price, value and experience, this place tops the list. It does get busy so I'd highly recommend a reservation. Our favourites were the crab salad, which we thought was pretty unique and the whole fried fish, which was crispy and fried perfectly. One of the best Thai meals that I have had outside of Thailand. All of the little details were just right - betel leaves for the salad, the splitting of the wings prior to frying, the succulence of the pork jowl and the way it's sliced so thinly, oof... I could go on and on. The food is so. Good. The service is also excellent: glasses were consistently filled, dishes arrived piping hot at the table, explanations of each dish when they were dropped off, the friendliness and warmth of the servers themselves - it all contributed to a casually spectacular meal. We were looking for a place to eat nearby, and we found Song by Kin Kao just by chance when using OpenTable. I remember having tried Kin Kao (on Commercial) before, and remembering liking it, but not totally wowed by it either. I figured the experience would be about the same. But I was wrong. Even thought it was relatively late (8:30pm), the place was still packed. I was surprised it was so busy. We reviewed the menu and tried the following: - Laab Wings - Incredible. I've had a lot of good chicken wings, but this was probably the most original preparation I've had to date. The wingettes are separated out, making it easy to snack on. And the flavour has an incredible punch. At $20, it's expensive, but thought it was still worth it. - Crispy Tofu - OK. Decently prepared, but eating alongside the wings, if almost felt like the tofu had no flavour. - Green Mango Crab Salad - OK. Different, but didn't feel very cohesive, and certainly not worth $35. Probably the one dish I wished I didn't order. - Grilled Pork Jowl - Very good. I really like pork jowl, and they executed it well. - Crab Fried Rice - Excellent. Again, at $40, it seems outrageously expensive, but it's some of the best fried I've had in a long time. Properly made in a wok (I assume), great flavour, good serving size. Service was good - attentive and friendly No complaints at all. Overall a nice surprise. Even though all the dishes weren't a hit, the Laab Wings and Fried Rice were both outstanding in my mind - dishes that would make me want to go back. Service was good, and although not cheap, their portion sizes are quite generous. The Grilled Pork Jowl with their spicy jaew dipping sauce was so tender and unique. The Deep-fried Lemongrass Wings were bite-sized and super tasty, topped with lemongrass for a special flavour. The Crispy Tofu and Pomelo Salad were great too. The Pad Thai with Tiger Prawns was pretty good, with many flavorful ingredients. Every time I'm in Vancouver this is on my go to checklist. My suggestion is to go with friends and order family style so that you can order as many things off the menu because everything is SO good. The chicken wings are my favorite amongst the starters - the sweet and tangy flavor combo is chefs kiss I also love the red curry duck, super tender meat that falls off the bone. Additional menu faves include the stir fry pork belly w/ gailan, northeastern thai style steak, papaya salad, and the coconut crème brûlée! The service was great, there were actually a few people who tended our table so we were taken care of very well. Walked into an empty spartan restaurant furnished in mordernish minimal furniture, of a oh hum we are of a normal boring vibe. Our hostess asked "do you have a reservation." We replied "we do not" as per their website 'we do not take reservations'. "Ok then, will the bar work?", suggested the hostess. I asked "there is not a single table available?" "No unfortunately we are fully booked" she replied. Okee. Alright already then. It was weird to see a Thai restaurant that is completely staffed with non-Asains/Thais maybe with an exception of one Asian server while the back of the house /kitchen / maintenance were all minorities. Typical snobbery places I vehemently avoid. As the restaurant started to "fill in", I noticed the caucasians were seated at the window tables, while minorities were seated in the deep recess of the restaurant. Method seems premeditated. Racist much? Overall, food was alright. Typical Thai, nothing exceptional except the price. Bartender tells us the online menu is outdated. Current prices are much more in the person as they do not provide menus only a QR code. So that they can adapt to rising inflation. We ordered some fan favourites; wings, pad thai, and laab. Nothing special. IMO it does not live up to the hype. Just average Thai with above average prices now that they have nod from a French tire company. Perhaps if we only ordered a few dishes we may have enjoyed them more and found them more unique. The oysters and the crab fried rice were the stand outs to us. Both were bright and flavourful. Wings were crispy and super tasty but since they broke up the wings into 2 pieces, the portion seemed small. Tom yum hot pot was good but I didn't find it much different from other Thai restaurants. Definitely recommend making reservations as the place was packed! As for ambiance, I loved the stoneware and the general decoration of the place. The main downside was the hallway to get into the restaurant which is super narrow & makes it crowded to get in/out since everyone with a reservation shows up at the same time. The food was definitely the winner here! We got 3 vegetarian dishes to share: the tofu pad Thai, yellow curry, and Thai chilli tofu. I have to say that all 3 were amazing, probably the best Thai food I've had in Vancouver. However, I was shocked at how small the portion sizes were given how high the prices were! The curry was $35 and the other 2 were in the mid-twenties. For some reason this location is much pricier for the same/very similar dishes compared to the other location. As for service, I had no major complaints. The staff were attentive and nice, but there was a table in the restaurant being extraordinarily loud (to the point where other patrons were clearly bothered by it) and the staff didn't say anything to them which was a bit odd for a place that is in this price range. Overall, I think the food is delicious here but the prices are slightly higher than what the value is worth. They followed with the pomelo salad which was novel with betel leaves. I have never before had shrimp toast and have made the decision that I will order it again if given the opportunity. I have been wanting to visit Kin Kai Song since I've heard so many good reviews about this place. I have to say I was not disappointed! Service was great from start to finish, servers were great at introducing the dishes and water was filled the whole night - we felt taken care of throughout the dinner. Ambience and decor were both nicely done. Moving onto drinks and food - everything we had were amazing! We started off with shrimp toast and pomelo salad. Shrimp toast was perfectly breaded and paired so nicely with the pickled cucumber/onion. The pomelo salad was surprisingly pleasant, it was sweet and tangly. For the mains, we had the pad Thai with pork jowl - the pad Thai itself was one of the best pad Thai I've had, the noodles were so bouncy. But the star was the pork jowl, I highly recommend ordering it with the pad Thai, or it can also be ordered as an appetizer by itself. We also had the duck confit curry which was another great hit. I never knew putting lychee in curry would work, but the added sweetness made the curry tasted so unique. We ended our meal with the coconut mousse cake with mango sticky rice, the sticky rice was so yummy and the whole combination was not overly sweet. Overall, I highly recommended this restaurant! The lack of prices even on printed menus put me off. I have been to numerous high end places where only the host's menu would show the prices but this is a casual Thai restaurant! Parking is a bit of a pain unless you go after 7 pm so you have more choices on Broadway. On the plus side, nice refined presentation of dishes but did they blow me away, no. The pad Thai was through and through mediocre. Little too wet for my taste and the noodles just ever slightly overcooked. Sauce was lacking the bold punchy flavors I expect from pad Thai. I had to also ask for more chili powder. 3/5. Tom yum soup had several large prawns and they were cooked well. But the soup itself was WAY too salty. Nearly inedible. And I was thirsty for several hours afterwards. The waiter asked how spicy we wanted it and we said to make it very spicy. Turned out medium maybe. 1/5. Maybe 2/5. There is better and cheaper Thai food in Vancouver and I prefer more authentic flavors. Parking is annoying when it's busy. This is one of the best thai restaurants i've been to in van, in terms of taste, presentation and ambiance altogether. Some dishes were on the saltier side but overall my dinner experience was on point. The pad thai was my fav dish of the night, and the best I've had in van to date. A lot of pad thai dishes can be overwhelmingly sweet and sticky, but this had a perfect balance of sweet, tangy, to saltiness. The noodles were a bit wider than traditional rice noodles which helped them absorb more flavors without being too mushy. The addition of dried shrimp gave an extra dimension of umami, while the crunchy peanuts and shrimp added more fun textures. The red curry duck confit was another memorable dish. The duck leg was fried then mixed into a luscious sweet red curry sauce. The duck itself was a touch too salty but paired well with the curry sauce. Everything went together so well with the fragrant jasmine rice. I can eat 2 bowls of it! read more

Me and my best friend had a FANTASTIC time here. I live for the modern aesthetic and ambiance of the restaurant. The darkness of the restaurant gives it a perfect vibe to the place. It is not like a romantic place, but it is like a hang out with a group of people for dinner. A fantastic place to just hang out with friends and a great place for a dinner date as well! I came here with my friend to try out this sister restaurant of Kin Kao. I was happy I put a reservation for the night because it was PACKED! I wasn't expecting to see how trendy this place was. I love the service of this place as they are extremely personal and the people who brought out the food explained each and every dish~ I started the night with a proper Thai Ice Tea, and omg, the orange of the Thai Ice Tea lit up the place, even with the low lighting, I could see it on other tables of the other patrons. It was perfectly sweet and delicious and on top of that it gave me a good energy boost for the rest of the night. Thai Ice Tea- 9/10 Then me and my friend ordered just 3 mains for the night so we can at least feel the vibe and try out the menu of the restaurant. We ordered the following: Mushroom Stir Fry w/ Silken Egg Tofu- 9/10 I loved this dish a lot. Even for it being such a fusion restaurant, whoever the chef is, they know how to use a wok, because by the time it has arrived at our table, every bite we took through out the whole night, the mushroom stir fry was steaming hot and I loved that. The whole night, you can feel the perfect heat in the whole dish. It was amazing. The flavours were typical Thai and it was a perfect mix with the Red curry, if you want to mix. It really deserves the 9/10 for the dish. Red Curry Duck Confit- 7/10 I know for sure I have had better Duck Red Curry elsewhere, but it was a bit too thin for me and it wasn't as spicy as I wanted or expected it to be. Even though it wasn't as spicy, it was delicious. I wish maybe it was served with noodles instead of us just ordering rice. On top of that, the duck felt a little bit too gamey for my taste. Regardless they have a delicious red curry. I'll just give it a pass for this time. Pad Thai- 9/10 This was hella amazing and delicious. With the skillfulness of the chef using that wok and the flavours of the spiciness, wow this was worth it. I love a good spicy pad thai and I love how steaming hot it was with every bite. I was really happy about this dish a lot. At the end of the night, this is a place is for sure a place I would recommend and on top of that will be coming back to try out their Happy Hour menu~!!! read more

I would say Kin Kao Song was the most suprising experience in Vancouver during the 7-day stay, because they really blends a lot traditional Thai foods with innovation. The Oysters are so fresh from Fanny Bay with their house spicy nam jim seafood sauce, thai chili paste, crispy shallot and micro greens. The flavors is unique and strong, with a tail of sweetness and sea. The mix of oyster and thai is perfect! Crispy Tofu I love it! Served with house tamarind sweet chili and peanut sauce. The seasoning is so great! Jaew, a masterfully complex chili dipping sauce made with toasted rice powder, plays a contrasting role alongside thin slices of delicious pork jowl. Red Curry Duck Confit is not as good as the dishes above. it is a marinated duck leg and then deep fried on a savoury, creamy red curry with lychee. The dish itself is great but considering the price of 40+ not that worth. read more

Don't judge a SONG by its cover? Before stepping in and trying out this place, I read up a few reviews. Honestly, it was somewhat giving me a bad vibe on how the way and words being used by the owner in responding to customer feedbacks, a sense of arrogance or maybe a bit too defensive? Or maybe I give it a try myself to be fair? This place is located on East Broadway, across from Kingsgate mall. The outside can be misleading because the inside offers that trendy modern contemporary atmosphere with a casual vibe. There is a decent amount of pay street parking available. Greeted by the hostess and got myself comfortably seated (another small table..). Scanned through the menu and here were the food I ordered; 1. Thai green tea & bottle of coke. Nice rich and refreshing green tea. Love it when coke is in a glass bottle, they always taste better in a glass bottle! 2. Pomelo salad with toasted coconut & cashew nuts. Nice little blend of flavour and texture, glad the pomelo was sweet and juicy. 3. Tom yum prawn soup. It was served in a Thai hot pot. The soup was steaming hot, very rich and tasty in flavours. I always like a good soup! 4. Mussels with fresh pineapple in curry sauce. The mussels were very fresh, big and plump. The sauce accompanied it was nicely balanced and tasty enough to eat a bowl of rice with. 5. Live spot prawns stir fried with chili garlics. The stomachs in the heads were removed (nice!) the body and head were so well prepared; whiskers trimmed, heads separated from shells. The prawns were nicely stir fried and all the ingredients were in harmony with each other. Literally I can eat 2 bowls of rice with this dish. Loved it! 6. Crab fried rice. There were a generous amount of crab meats, however I find it a bit on the drier side. It's good they used day old rice to make the fried rice; it's easier to wok the rice without them clustering together or is that just a kitchen myth? Making it short and simple, freshly cooked rice is just as good in making fried rice as overnight rice, it just depends on the wok'ing skills and experiences. I know all the home cooks are probably saying, "NooOooOo......." lol chill it! I know what I am talking about =) 7. Watermelon granita dessert. Surprisingly, it was not bad, quite refreshing after a meal. Looks can be deceiving. Overall, this is a cozy little place to share some laughters and decent fusion food with a few friends. Simply put it; come in and relax to the casual atmosphere, enjoy some good food and drinks, and the friendly staffs will take care of you. To be honest, before I stepped into this place, I was thinking on how bad the service or food was going to be according to some of the reviews, but it proved to me the complete opposite; never judge a SONG by its cover. read more

We went here on a Saturday night for a friend's Birthday dinner, and let me tell you...it is literally so hard to find a good Thai restaurant in this city. HOWEVER, I highly recommend you try Kin Kao Song if you have never been. *Please note they have two different locations; Kin Kao Song (E Broadway & Kingsway) & Kin Kao Thai Kitchen (Commercial Drive). Both locations have different menus!* Every dish we had was packed with flavours and spices. The presentation was so aesthetically pleasing, and the service was great. Here is what we ordered (starting from my personal favourite at the top); OYSTERS: 2 Oysters | $10.00 Fresh oysters from Fanny Bay with their house spicy nam jim seafood sauce, thai chili paste, crispy shallot and micro greens. Definitely one of the best oysters I've had. CEVICHE SPOT PRAWNS: 1/2 Lbs | $32.00 Raw fresh spot prawns with their house spicy Namjim seafood sauce. So refreshing with a nice cilantro flavour to the sauce. Heads are removed and deep-fried. CHILLI GARLIC SPOT PRAWNS: 1/2 Lbs | $35.00 Beware, this is very spicy! But wow, delicious. Deep fried fresh spot prawns stir fried in their SPICY chilli garlic sauce. We ordered rice on the side with this, and I highly recommend the same. The rice compliments the chilli garlic sauce very well and the prawns were cooked to perfection. HOT & SOUR LINGCOD SOUP: $36.00 Note this is not the same as Tom Yum soup. A SPICY fragrant dashi based soup with fried Lingcod and young tamarind leaves. Serves 3-4. We recommend having this with jasmine rice. The lingcod was cooked well. The soup was a bit on the sour side, but good none the less. NORTHERN THAI LAAB PORK: $29.00 Stir fried ground pork, pork belly tossed in our house laab spice served with fresh vegetables, herbs and a side of tomato salsa. They recommend having this with jasmine rice, which I agree. We were warned that this is spicy, however we didn't think it was. Or, maybe my mouth was just numb from the chilli garlic prawns lol. PAD THAI: $25.00 We stuck with the classic pad Thai. I think this was a bit sweet for me and nothing outstanding to note. POMELO SALAD: $22.00 Pomelo topped with crispy shallots, shredded coconut. I think I didn't like the fresh lemongrass. Furthermore, pomelo can be a bit bitter. I think my preference is just papaya salad. We were way too stuffed and would have liked to try some of their desserts but unfortunately we were in a coma from the appies & mains. And obvi, we got their Thai iced tea which is a must. Again, as mentioned they have two locations and each location has as different menu. I would definitely want to try their Commercial Drive location as I saw that they have fried Talapia, drunken noodles and Tom yum there. PARKING: Not gunna lie, parking was a bit tough. My party and I decided on the chefs tasting menu. Food was excellent! My tongue got hit with so many flavours especially the Tom yum soup and pomelo salad (in like a good way). I wish could drink that soup everyday. The squash stir-fry was so delicate and flavourful; I've never had squash like this before. Highly recommend. The only dish I thought was ok was the eggplant salad which I thought the flavour wasn't as strong and the pork a little tough. Overall, come here for the food! Service was so friendly and charming. Ambiance was good. It was quite busy. Thought lighting could be warmer. Highly recommend this place! read more
