We had the best time at Odd Society, and I am still smiling two days later. Initially perplexed, since our Uber dropped us off one block away, we had no idea where we were in the dark of the Canadian night. Surrounded by warehouses, did the driver want us to experience a "call of the wild?" However, Odd Society beckoned one block from the corner, and two seats were available at the strange bar. Strange because our view was blocked by a kind of ersatz plastic and wood wagon wheel blocking our view of the servers and bar. It was reminiscent of Utah's Zion Curtain. Later, I was told it was part of Odd Society's Covid protection and helped the bartenders stack things up. Okay, fine, but tear the damn things down. They're obnoxious. Odd Society creates an array of liquors made from ingredients sourced locally by law. It's required by their license. I tried almost all of them, and most were fantastic. Abby and Colin, our servers, were charming, fun, and educational, answering my questions, which became increasingly inane as the alcohol took effect. The distillery also mixes fantastic cocktails, and mine, named Midori, was friggen unbelievable. I had two of them along with my liquor tasting. My Midori was made with a special concoction called Portuguese Sweet Milk, or something like that. It was amazing. I want one for breakfast. The fun kept coming, and I didn't want to leave. Alas, we had reservations at Lunch Lady up the street. We should have stayed at Odd Society. Lunch Lady was a disappointment. Try Odd Society out as both a distillery and cocktail bar. You won't be disappointed about either one. read more

I have a friend who loves to drink so when he was back in town, I bookmarked this place to bring him to as I saw many great reviews and pictures. In summary, the place was ok, but noticed after the fact that we were overcharged for the drinks. It's a small space - about 3 high tables, one lower one, each seating 4 to maybe at most 5 people, plus a bar. I reserved a table for the 2 of us at 3:30 pm on a Sunday (earliest reservation they had as they open at 3 pm) and we were seated at 3 pm. They checked our vaccine passports and then seated us. Not long after we were seated, the remaining tables were all taken just after opening for 30 minutes so I would recommend reserving if you prefer tables over bar seating. The waitress brought over a drinks menu and food menu. The menu showed cocktails at $13. We chose our drinks and ordered, then the waitress came by with a second menu that she said was for Sunday only. She apologized and said she normally doesn't work Sunday's so she didn't know this promotional menu was available. This menu had some cocktails on promotion that I would have not minded to try, but I had already received my cocktail. Oh well. I had the Violet and Claire, which looked great and tasted pretty good for the first half. However by the second half of the drink, it started to taste too sweet. It was not bad for a cocktail, overall. My friend said the Smoke Between the Sheets cocktail was alright as well. We got our bills quickly as we had a second place to visit afterwards. After paying, I snapped a picture of the bill at the time but did not notice until I got home that to my surprise, each cocktail was listed on the bill at $14.95. I recalled their physical menu saying $13, and verified this with their menu online. Unfortunately, I did not notice the discrepancy until I was home, otherwise I would have mentioned something. Note that our visit was at the end of November 2021, and at the time I'm writing this review (December 26, 2021), their online menu still has cocktail prices at $13. So, I am not sure if this was a one time mistake when we paid, or if they have just forgotten to update their menu? Either way, this was disappointing. Because of the entire experience I probably won't visit again, especially with all the other options Vancouver has for cocktails. read more

We came here on NYE and although it is recommended that you make reservations, we managed to snag a seat as we did come a little bit earlier. We got the Steam Heat and Modern Hound and both hit the spot perfectly. I particularly liked the candied ginger that was included with the Steam Heat and added that extra flavour. I can't wait to come back here to try more of their cocktail offerings. read more

With the explosion all these craft beer places around town, now there are craft liquor places popping up too. Parking is available on Powell, as well as a small lot next to the building. The inside is very clean and hipsterish. Definitely felt good. The tasting room has a small cluster of couches and a couple of tables. There are a set of double doors where can look down a long row of vats where all this beautiful liquor is created. The bartender was very friendly, and suggested I try a sampler ($7) as I had no idea what was good. Sold. All ingredients are sourced locally. Another feel-good attribute. East Van vodka - interesting banana aftertaste. Gin - nice and light, with plenty of flavour. It is hard to find a good gin, but this would be one of them. Creme de cassis - some people may not like this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice and crimson, and a bit on the syrupy side. This one is the dessert of the 3 samplers, for obvious reasons. All 3 liquors were unique for sure. The vodka and gin were surprisingly smooth. I will definitely be back. Recommended. read more

This is my absolute favourite bar in Vancouver. The drinks are always unique and delicious, the staff are hilarious and friendly, and the location is funky. I also have a selection of their bottles on hand at home as well. The oaken gin (an aged Gin) makes a delicious G&T and I love their creme de cassis. The Wild Claire is often my favourite drink as it changes often and is always a little different. Definitely check out this gem of a bar! read more

Our visit to Odd Society Spirits was a trip! Firstly, the artistic decor of this large open space is awe inspiring. Owner Miriam Karp introduced herself, she's so warm and down to earth. We chatted about the place and she answered all my uber-enthusiastic questions. The owl themed mural behind the bar is a wonderful piece inspired by artist Shwa Keirstead and can be seen repeated in the branding. East Van Vodka is their first product available to the public at just under $30 dollars a bottle. Taste the deliciously rich, berry cassis, which can be added to distilled beverages or enjoyed over ice cream and other sweets. Imagine the culinary potential! I'm looking forward to owning a bottle of my own when they become available. They're just working on the labeling process at this point. If possible, take a tour with distiller Josh who walked us through and patiently explained the different functions of the beautiful equipment in the distillery room, which to myself just looks like large steampunk inspired art. Especially the Vodka distiller. We were lucky enough to arrive during the brewing process, so imagine the smell. It's a bit different from a brewery or winery. You must visit! read more

The women at the tasting room were super friendly as well and did a great job walking us through each of the spirits to give us a background on how they developed each one. A surprising delight. This little place serves an impressive assortment of patiently made cocktails. I had as much fun watching the drinks get made as I did drinking them. I was incredibly impressed with the bartender's skill and the fact that she never once needed to reference a checklist for some of the complicated drinks that had 6 or more ingredients. Everything was running smoothly and a few of my party got to see how the distillery made their vodkas and gins in the back room. The entire seating area was classy and clean and had a very trendy decor. The back where the spirits are made was kept immaculate. $9 drinks but worth every penny for the experience. This local distillery has a nice selection of cocktails using the companies own products. I had 'the drive', which was a nice mix of their spirits. The cost of most cocktails are around $10, which is very reasonable compared to other cocktail spots. The inside looks a bit warehouse-like but is complemented with nice loungey retro chairs and tables as well as a decent size bar. There are very few edibles here, but they do offer a Charceuterie board or a couple of small snack options. I recommend this place if you are up for a quick cocktail. They also offer happy hour specials, but I have yet to try those out. Should you really enjoy their products -vodka, gin, vermouth - you can buy bottles in house. I'll admit I'm typically more of a beer guy and lesser into the gins and vodkas, but luckily I'm open minded with my intoxicants so we stopped in during an afternoon of various local brewery tap room visits. I personally had The Carnivore ($11), which is a cocktail made with pork fat washed mongrel, vermouth, amaretto, and some kind of tea infused mongrel. I admit I ordered it based on my love for all things pork related, not even knowing what mongrel is. Turns out mongrel is basically somewhere between moonshine and what whisky would be without barrel aging. This drink was not the smoothest or tastiest cocktail I've ever had, but it did pack a nice punch. My tasting companions tried the liquor flights (literally 3 glasses of straight booze) and a couple of other cocktails. Everyone was pretty satisfied with them and I'll give this place the 4 stars simply based on being a unique destination making their name off of locally made spirits. Plus you can stare at the various liquor stills in the back while look a lot more oldschool and refined than a bunch of beer conicals, so cool points for that. read more

I stopped in during a vintage/art pop-up sale I learned about on facebook events, and I decided to stay for a drink after. I sure am glad I did because that was one of THE BEST old-fashioned cocktails I've ever had! The prices are great for the amount of work that goes into crafting each cocktail, and the service was amiable -- this distillery has a small and quaint bar, with excellent ambiance. I live a tad aways, but I'll be recommending this spot to others and hope to come back to try more cocktails in the future. read more

I still consider this is my favorite hidden gem!!! I accidentally stumbled upon this brand at the Rocky Wine & Food Festival in Edmonton and I instantly fell in love with their Creme de Cassis. So when my girls and I planned to visit Vancouver, I know I had to go to their tasting room. The place was so pretty and has that vintage theme all over. And let me tell you.. the drinks did not disappoint!! It was the best day drinking experience I've ever had! A bunch of cocktails and two punch bowls later, we found ourselves deeply in love with this place. The cocktails selection is great, but the PUNCH BOWL IS SO AWESOME! I really wish I live in Vancouver, so I can come in the evening and listen to the live music accompanied by some great cocktails. It's important to note how their drinks are fairly priced ($10-15 per drink) and I think the punch bowl is affordable and so worth it ($25 for the smallest one that is good for 2-4 people). read more

This is a really funky distillery with roaring 20's decor. The spirits were great and I am particular. The gin was not to be missed with lavender, rose, and elderflower. They also make killer cocktails at the bar and $9 is a great price for a specialty cocktail in Vancouver. Cons- they are not open that late. Great, great vodka and cassis liqueur being produced right now - all local ingredients (except for the PG barley). Wonderful staff will talk your ears off about their product (but only if you want the info). Their vodka is the only one that I have ever sipped that did not remind me of rocket fuel! Take a tour of the distillery; gaze at the "steam punkish décor"; go and enjoy. They are already planning to lay down their first barrels of whisky - not my thing, but the upcoming moonshine production might be ... very, very fun place - so glad we found it. We went here for a cocktail after a wonderful dinner at Bistro Wagon Rouge. The decor is lovely, they have a few seats/tables as well as a nice bar for sampling and now that they can serve cocktails, you can sit and sip one of their creations. I had a Modern Hound (vodka, grapefruit, jasmine syrup, lime and bitters) it was amazing. Just the way a sublime cocktail should taste. I'm a whisky drinker. These guys make vodka that'll make a whisky drinker get excited. These spirits have character and flavour! It's nice to be able to buy a bottle of spirits that's delicious and allows you to support a local business. We just ducked into here on impulse while walking around the area to check out breweries. Acting on that impulse was NOT a mistake! This turned into one of many highlights of our day. The liquors are excellent (especially the gin), the cocktails are interesting and expertly made, and the bartender we met was friendly, knowledgeable, and highly skilled. The space also is a cool place to be. Great atmosphere, and the glassware is fun. It's a tiny place, though, so it might get crowded at certain times (not when we were there on a weekday afternoon). This place is a bit out of the way but worth the trip, and certainly worth a stop if you already are nearby. read more
