A diamond in the rough! This surprising gem has some really tasty food and cocktails for a good price! Went here once and had what may possibly be the best Poutine in the city. It is a pub/tavern, so expect that when you come here. It can get busy around happy hour or later hours, but the service both times we went was still wonderful! Everyone was nice, informative and helpful! The crispy fried chili tofu was also very tasty. Sat one time up in the bar area, and the second time in one of the booths down the stairs. Down the stairs area is low key the legit cozy spot! The vibe down there was great. Up by the bar can definitely be a lot of fun with the right group. The place was clean, the service was fast. This place is A-OK to me. It's nothing special. It has a nice ambiance but is very standard and nothing stood out in particular. The staff is very friendly and helpful! We went on a halloween weekend and it wasn't too busy. The staff was all in costumes which was fun to see. I tried the winter butternut squash soup and it was extremely thicc. I thought the taste was good but it was more of a slush to me. It was also lukewarm so that made it kind of weird. I didn't end up finishing it. I did have the garlic toast that it came with which was good. I will say though that the food camp out really quickly. The bill was also pretty cheap. I think it came to like $68 and we had mussels and a bottle of wine as well, so not bad. read more

This place is really reasonable for food and drink and has a really nice ambience. There is a separate back room bar at the very end that is more quiet if you want to be away from the noise and people (it does get super busy here during dinner and weekends though.) Thy have an extensive drink list and daily specials. Sunday they have a nice roast special with all the fixings. I would like to just give a special shout out to Nadine whom gives me excellent service when I frequent this establishment. Thank you for your friendly service and knowledgeable suggestions of wine pairings with dinner. Sunday they have a live jazz band and it makes this place a little bit more classy. I would also add that the back room is available for functions so if you have a birthday, anniversary or business function the back room would be good for that. read more

This was the first time going to this restaurant and it will also be my last. The atmosphere had a good vibe until they stuck my group at one of their outside tables that should really be meant for two people. We asked to move to a table with more space and the server stated, "I would have to ask the server to pay me to do that, or you would have to pay me" she did not elaborate on that and I truly do not know what that means. They stuck us at a table that was too small, as a consumer, I do not care how you resolve this but it should be resolved. They did move us but then ignored us the rest of the time. Now onto the food. All the food is very salty. My burger was also made incorrectly and I voiced this and they gave me a cold ingredient to put on the burger instead of remaking it. After I tried it with the sauce they forgot, I told them it was not good considering the sauce was meant to be cooked onto the burger not put on cold. They did nothing to rectify this. Terrible service. Also, these homemade sauces (I.e. ketchup and BBQ sauce) are terrible, this restaurant should just invest in name brand sauces. Their homemade sauces are clumpy and lack taste. Lastly, as my group and I started to walk home my friend got very sick from the food. She ended up vomiting when we got home. I do not recommend this place and I would advise to stay away. read more

Service isn't bad, the food is pretty overpriced and poor quality though. Very few vegan options and the vegan "sausage gravy" has nothing sausage about it. Bland goo. NO STRAWS! Not even paper or plant based plastic straws! Your only option in a BAR to drink with a straw is the purchase a cruddy metal one for $3-4. Tacky to profit off the "no plastic straws in the ocean/save the turtles" movement. Shows they don't care at all but saw an opportunity to profit. Yuck. I wish I liked the food or drinks enough the give this place a better rating, because the patio is nice and I've enjoyed my service for the most part. One of my favourite cocktail spots on the drive - it has a great dark bar vibe, which is perfect for an evening cocktail with friends or a date. I give it four stars, as I do find the wait can be a little long, as my last time there, it took way to long between drinks each time, we even had the manger come up twice asking if we needed more drinks, as he noticed we were all out for some time. Although, it was a busy Saturday night, and thought maybe they were understaffed. If you like a good cocktail, I suggest some of the signatures. The Vanilla Bean Old Fashioned is a must try, if you are an old fashioned drinker! I also really enjoyed the Charlie Sour, which adding the amaretto was a delightful twist! They also offer a great happy hour special, they call the 'party hour' with some great eats and my favourites, the sweet teas, with the Kentucky Blue, being absolutely delicious! read more

Came here in early January still in the midst of COVID season. Really happy to see how this restaurant was respecting the social distancing orders with proper sanitization and plastic barriers throughout. Managed to get seated into a cozy little spot and felt very safe. Service here is super friendly and the food is absolutely delicious. We had the Beef Wellington, Black Dragon wings and Clams/Mussels with Chorizo. Beef wellington came out with that beautiful flaky crust, and tender and juicy meat on the inside. Black dragon wings were nicely seasoned and not drowned in sauce or batter. Clams and mussels were generously portioned and came out steaming hot. Even the ketchup isn't your standard ketchup - I think it's housemade with real tomatoes and sugar. It's the little things. They also have some very tasty beers on tap. One of the only bars open late on the drive during 2020. The happy hour was not such as my drink cost $9. What kind of special is that? Not special at all. I got a Cesar. The olives were small, like that's all the could afford. The rim of my glass was covered in salt and pepper so imagine my surprise when it came without a straw. I asked if I could have a straw they said they would sell me one for three dollars for environmental reasons. That's such a Kitsilano thing to say . My server assumed I wouldn't want a spicy drink but that my darker companion would. I can't help but feel that has to do with my white-ness #Racism. Kind of kidding. Kind of not kidding. I came here for the first time last week, and I can't wait to come back! They have a great sandwich selection, and offer gluten free buns for those of us who can't stomach the dreaded wheat. It wasn't one that was secretly cardboard masquerading as a bun, either! Always a relief for someone who just wants to enjoy a sandwich every now and again. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, and it was SO savoury and delightful. The only complaint I have is that the turkey had just come from the smoker and still had some string wrapped around it. Totally not an issue, but I would've probably had a worse time if I'd accidentally swallowed it. Staff were incredibly apologetic and offered to re-make them, but I was having too nice of a time eating the sandwich to give it back. 3.4 Stars ** I'm not a drinker, so i rarely go to pub/bar establishments ** There is meter parking all along Commercial Drive, but free parking is very limited as majority of the residential area is permit only parking. First impressions, it looked like a typical pub/bar, lighting was dim, they had the Canuck game on all their tv's and volume on full blast. We went here for a friends Bday party and had a reservation for 15 people at 730pm. They had a nice big area set up for us. We ordered : Lemon Pepper Wings - very good wings, crispy, not greasy, and seasoned really well. Charlatan Fries - big plate of garlic lime fries covered with fresh grated parmesan cheese. Good flavor but found that majority of the fries were cut too small or end parts of a potato. The Featured Sausage - flavor of the sausage was good, but a little over cooked so it was a bit dry. The grilled veggies and picked onions that came with it were very good. Bacon Cheese Burger - good sized juicy burger, wasn't the best burger I've had, but it was good. Side salad was ok, lettuce was a little wilted. The service was really good. The server took our orders and double checked who's with who to separate the bill at the end of the night. Our waters were always refilled and plates were cleared after we finished our dish. The prices were on the higher side, but i liked that they didn't put automatic gratuity on the bill. I have only been here to drink so I can't really rate the food. The first time was on a bad blind date about a year ago, and the second this past weekend with a friend to get all juiced up for his birthday. Being a Saturday night it was busy and crowded and we were seated downstairs at the back. Our waitress was very friendly and comped us two shots on the house (thanks birthday boy!). We proceed to order and down various different drinks, some of which took a while to arrive at our table, but we were having too much fun to really be annoyed by it. The atmosphere was fun and the music was good. We made friends with several drunk strangers over the course of the night and one guy even came up to tell us we were the best looking "couple" in the bar (awww). We stayed until closing, settled a VERY pricey drink bill and stumbled off into the cold winter night. Fun and neat place to hang out and have a few drinks on the Drive. read more

I had the privilege of meeting up with my drunk friends two nights in a row... it's the start of a local watering hole, if I wasn't a 20-25 minute bike ride away. Love the way the bar is organized... there's three levels, each with a variety of bar counters, tables, and couches. The kitchen is located on the bottom level, so the waitresses always have to walk up and down the stairs, making it easy to catch them to another drink or food request. For drinks, I've only had their drink specials which was an amazing beer that I drink too much of and never remember... apparently the "weekend special pour." For food, I ate the moroccan chicken bites. They were decent, with amazing sauce that was flavorful yet not too spicy. Unfortunately there was bit too much sauce, making the salad greens a sticky mess... a deliciously sticky mess! There was also edamane beans flavored with salt, pepper, black sesame seeds, sesame oil and chile flakes. YUMMO! Perfect bar snack. The lady I was with also wanted something desserty, and I was lucky to grab their last slice of cheesecake... bit too much coffee flavor for me, but whatever.. it was for her. She also ordered a chicken and apple flatbread, which was amazing... especially after three pints. All the food was easy to share, and highly recommended to compliment your drinks. Once the location of a bumbling beat poet bar, with Bukowski written on the tablecloths and ambiguous classification of the washrooms, The Charlatan has gutted whatever was left from the beat generation and scrubbed the "poetry" off the walls in the bathroom. Renovations have kept the bar's three levels, with the couches next to the fireplace on the second level acting as the nicest seat in the house. Think unnecessary wine glasses hanging upside down around the bar, and dimmed track lighting next to the pipes on the high ceilings. It's like the poets got real jobs, grew out of their immaterial Zens, and decided that they would prefer leather couches, attractive waitresses, Caesars with 3 green beans, and yam fries with their lamb burger. But it is spacious, with very good service, and has a wide range of beers at moderate prices. There is an outdoor deck as well, but it is obviously rendered moot by rain more often then not. Cozy and snug, expect Yuppies and DINKS (Double Income No Kids), and tables to seat you and up to 7 of your friends. read more

I've never written a bad review but the Charlatan has burned me a number of times. The food has been mediocre and the way they seat customers is ridiculous. On one semi-busy night we were offered extremely cramped bar space on the lowest floor. Had we sat there, we would have to be tucked right in at all times due to a table being right behind us, and would both have to squeeze out if someone wanted to use the washroom. There was a table available on the main floor, but when we asked for it, we were told they only sat groups of three people or more at that table. Being two people, we didn't meet the requirements. No one else was waiting for a table. We would have likely drank the amount of three people, but instead we left as they refused saying it was restaurant policy. Last night we were at a two person table on the middle floor. Before we received our food, the empty two person tables beside us were shuffled to create a six-person table. Then the servers proceeded to sit a group of ten at this table for six. We were shoulder to shoulder with the group. Not very comfortable. The server didn't offer to move us to one of available tables on the main floor, and when we expressed how uncomfortable we were we were to the server she just laughed nervously. We live in the area, eat/drink at restaurants 4+ times a week, and are good tippers. But we won't be returning to the Charlatan. read more

This is the best bar/gastro pub/Westcoast cuisine experience in Vancouver, hands down. I honestly can't think of a place that exceeds expectations in so many ways. Quality/delicious food from local suppliers, a huge selection of craft beers, an amazing staff who will remember your name--this place has it all. It's the type of bar where you can go alone and leave with 10 friends. I can't recommend this place enough--not only for amazing product and exceptional customer service...but most importantly, a truly unforgettable experience. I have been incredibly unwell (sleep paralysis) for nearly 3 months and therefore tragically unable to visit any of my favourite hot spots for fish, salads, or different types of juice and wine. My Family Physician (Dr. Tarp) told me I was as good as dead if I didn't "get on with my life" so despite my truly unbearable sleep condition I decided to ride my new scooter down to The Charlatan on Commercial Drive for an independent meal. I was too tired to accurately read the menu or order any of the AMAZING options for food but did manage to drink several pots of black coffee on a completely empty stomach with some of the friendly staff before needing to go home to my loving family after burning my mouth badly because I was too eager with a VERY hot (and tasty) mug of Joe. The caffeine is still surging through my body and may serve as yet another insurmountable barrier in my quest for sleep. That said, if I do manage to rest my bloodshot eyes (doubtful) I'll be dreaming of my next meal at the beautiful and gorgeous Charlatan restaurant. read more

I stopped in at the Charlatan on a rainy night recently. I was dining alone and didn't want to eat fast food. I sat myself down at the lovely big bar that beckons from the entryway. The friendly barman fixed me right up with a pint from one of the gleaming taps, and when asked for a recommendation for what to eat, he didn't hesitate before saying "Tuna Bites"! The big bites of seared yellowfin were delicious and well presented, and more than enough to fill me up - despite being listed as an appie. I can only imagine the size of the entrees! The quick review: Horrible and slow customer service. Some waitresses with attitude. Okay food. Would not recommend. Not going back here. The details: Girlfriend and I went for brunch here. Place was busy when we arrived so we had to wait for a table. We sat at the bar while we were waiting as instructed by the hostess, telling us a table was clearing up and it would be a few minutes. Another couple walked in and took what looked to be the table we had been waiting for. I calmly told the hostess about it but she gave us attitude and just said "well they took the table!" and that was that. 30 mins later we get a table downstairs. Bartender was nice and accommodating while we were waiting. Once we got our table we ordered and waited 45 mins before we got our food. Waitress was kind but not once did she or her manager apologize for the wait or offer something for waiting longer. A place with good customer service should always try to fix their wrongs. I got the hunters omlette which had the potential of being good but came out cold and my toast was SOLID ROCK HARD!! Could barely bite into it. Had the Montreal smoked meat poutein- horrible. The ran out of smoked meat, to which I requested no substitutions but just a discount in my final bill. They overloaded it with vegetables, and "garnished" it with 2 pieces of cheese. If they didn't have the ingredients, they should have told me right there. Also, it arrived so late. To the point where our kind waitress kept on reassuring us it would be there soon. Funny enough, the table beside us had ordered the poutein as well and it was placed at our table mistakenly. My poutein looked nothing like our neighbours. When I politely told the server it was really wasn't good- her manager offered a 25% discount, including the no meat discount. Which offered me an $0.25 discount... along with $3 for no meat. Super lame... considering I just spent $40 in drinks there and waited a fucking hour. read more

I love the Charlie. In fact, it's become such a natural part of my dining life that it didn't even occur to me to step back and review till now! The menu of food is a combo of home runs and misses. The best idea, I think, when dining at any place is to order food native to the style of the spot. Don't order attempts at Thai bowls at a pub. Don't order a burger at a Chinese restaurant. The "Drive burger" aka The Charlatan's veggie burger is awesome, definitely one of the best in vancity and around $13ish...cheap. It's loaded with roasted red peppers, goats cheese, and guacamole and served with yam fries. The bacon wrapped meatloaf is astonishingly and nostalgically good. Comes with garlic mash which is salty and garlicky and fluffy and awesome, and cooked veg which is thankfully cooked appropriately instead of the 50's style massacre that most people inflict on side veg. I order this on those marathon-of-rain-missing-home-cooked-meals type nights when I can go in alone and join my fellow expats to commiserate and warm our chilly bones. The chicken tenders are the best chicken tenders in Vancouver, possibly the best I've had ever. Actual chicken tenders (not just slices of chicken), panko breaded and fried to crunchy, moist perfection. Comes with thin, crispy fries and home-made honey mustard. I actually think all of their sauces are homemade. Beer list is solid. The Charlatan isn't trying to be St. Augustine's or Bier Craft. They don't have 3,573 beers on tap but what they do have is solid and pairs well with the menu. The beer flight is cheap and no beer is off limits, which is nice. Drinks are stiff and well-made. They have cheap and good Caesars... ...which brings me to brunch. The Charlatan is the only good brunch on the drive. I could spend hours lounging beneath my strategically planned sun glasses and hat while allowing Charlie to heal my hangovers. I wish they did daily brunch, actually. It's nothing super mind-blowing but again it's solid, relatively fast to arrive, and paired with a selection of "hair of the dog" type brunch booze. I think they even have a one-price brunch that includes a Caesar. The best thing about this place is the service. I have a close friend who works there and have become friends with a few of the other servers simply because they're awesome. It's nice to find servers that you want to stick around and chat with (which they'll do in a lovely and genuine manner) but that are totally professional, prompt, and accommodating. I have NEVER had anything less than a good experience here, and a lot of credit is due to the service. The room (and patio) are a perfect intersection of comfort and relaxed elegance. A major step up from the paint-everything-black-semi-industrial -approach that's infecting every pub in the city (thank you, Donelly Group), the Charlie is all warm polished wood and soft light wrapping it's simple layout. Enough tv's to watch whatever you're into but placed in a strategic and un-intrusive way, so you'll see couples on dates and groups of friends watching hockey peacefully cohabitating for the night. Descending over three conjoining levels, the rooms are small and intimate, prompting good conversation fueled by service from two bars. The patio is sunny, breezy, and studded with lush trees which insulate from road sound and provide a welcome oasis in which to drink or dine. The Charlatan is open pretty late most nights, hosts all the big hockey games, is reasonably easy to park by and has a bike post outside for neurotic bike owners like myself to monitor their prized possessions. After hearing the disappointing news of a one hour wait at Storm Crow Tavern, my roomies and I decided to traverse the Drive and see what else could offer us refreshing bevvies and tasty eats. The Charlatan looked interesting! Nice ambience, vintage decor and general good vibe. The waitresses were pleasant enough. We browsed the menu and were instantly enticed by the plethora of offerings. Ordered the bison gravy poutine and the seared tuna buger. It TOOK 45 MINUTES TO SEE IF THIS ACTUALLY EXISTED IN LIFE. During our wait we manage to down our first bottle of wine, fit in two smoke breaks, and do a little looky loo round the joint. UM we definitely did not get the best seats of the house. We were stuck in a corner behind the hostess where there was no air circulation and clearly were easy to forget about with the waitress. The restaurant looked so nice! Different levels, an outdoor patio (which the waitress said they didn't have one?!?) and the vibe seemed way cooler in the other areas of the restaurant. I get that a spot gets busy, but it's so essential during those times to still treat each guest with care. When we finally got our food we immediately had to ask for some salt and pepper. That poutine was a bit blandy bland bland. Finished our meals and waited for our bills forever, then waited for our server for the debit machine forever, only to find out that we had To go up to the front... Thanks for telling us, homie. Whatever. I think for exceptional service a place should offer something on the house to make up for a ridiculously long wait. Charlatan - my weekly stop-off on the way back from Britannia park for ice skating with my friend. When the ice is in - we skate once a week and then stop off here for a few pints of Guinness or a Strongbow. As soon as you walk in - you see the bar - and it's large selection of nice tasty beers - but notice the seating is a bit strange. There isn't much of it up top. You then notice the stairs to the left of the bar - and downstairs is a lot more seating with televisions for hockey, football or cricket. It's generally really busy on hockey nights - but not so much that you can't get a seat. The service is generally quite excellent - but sometimes if you are at the back - it tends to take a bit longer. A narrow patio rounds out this place if you choose to sit outside - I generally don't like to there - as it's pretty noisy and would rather be inside there.
