I stumbled across this place for dine out fest and I must say they've really outdone themselves with this one: for $45 you get a 3 course meal: (note this is only available til Feb 8) APPETIZER: - Steelhead Trout & Prawn Croquettes - Pumpkin Seed-Crusted Goat Cheese MAINS - Grilled Hanger Steak - Pan-Roasted Chicken - Grilled Sockeye Salmon - Winter Squash & Wild Mushroom Risotto finished with grana Padano DESSERT - Tiramisu - Lemon Crème Brûlée I found the value really worth it. Food, drinks, ambiance, and service all amazing. We also tried the nutty by nature cocktail ($16) and the daily special - domesticated jungle bird ($12). I was at The Cascade Room with three friends -- we had some food and drinks, and overall the service seemed fine. The waitress was sweet and helpful throughout, but things got awkward when we asked for the check. The first person paid and tipped 15%, and surprisingly, the waitress asked if something was wrong with her service. That comment caught all of us off guard. The second person, feeling uncomfortable, decided not to leave a tip at all. The waitress seemed annoyed and then handed me the card machine, saying I could "cover the tip on their behalf." I was honestly embarrassed by how pushy it felt. I ended up selecting the highest preset tip option just to avoid further awkwardness, but she even encouraged me to use the custom tip button to pay more. Is this kind of behavior acceptable? I always thought tipping was optional and based on the service -- is it becoming compulsory now? I honestly love the place, the ambiance the food but just for one experience I will never go back and won't recommend to my friends. This updated review is for the chicken wings and the wings only. These are some of Vancouver's best chicken wings and I've had a lot of wings in this town. I was out with friends for the early happy hour and two of us got the spicy soy glazed wings. We both were blown away by the fry on them and the additive sauce. We also got the house made ranch and stilton dipping sauces on the side and holy shit they were excellent too. We loved these wings so much, we legit went back late night that same evening with more friends and got four plates of wings. If you're a chicken wing fanatic like myself, you will not be disappointed. All day happy hour? Sign me up! The Cascade Room has all day happy hour on Mondays or 4-6 on all other days! The interior has a rusty, but gentle design. It also gives pub vibes, but not as intense (probably because it was still early). Their service was pretty good too, although not excelling. We got there around 5:30 on a Monday and was surprised it's not as busy as we're thought it was going to be! Still full-seated but no lines. It started popping around 6PM :) We got their fingerling potatoes, grilled steak skewers, spiced soy glaze chicken wings, beer-cured skipped Otto sockeye salmon gravax and their poutine! The fingerling potatoes were a bit dry, but their poutine was absolutely fire! The sockeye salmon was not that great lol-- new item on happy hour so we thought we'd try but it was so thick and the texture was a bit weird. The bread that came with it was way too hard and would crumble into pieces if we bit a bit harder. The skewers were flavourful but it was a small portion for $9. The poutine was my favourite! The flavour combinations were amazing and I just overall really enjoyed the way it tasted. The wings were sooo good as well-- but the spiced soy glaze has a kick to it, even though the waitress said it's not spicy at all. So if you can't handle spice like me, I recommending trying a different flavour. It was still delicious though !! On the rotating tap cocktails, we got POG and Thyme lavender-- both were a delight! Such a great spot for cocktails! My friend and I came for happy hour, which runs daily 4-6 pm. It wasn't that crowded when we dropped by Thursday around 5 pm, and we could pretty much sit anywhere we wanted. We opted for outdoor seats as it was such a warm day out. They have a decent food hh food selection, but I was primarily interested in their hh cocktails, which rotate on a daily basis and cost $9 each. On the day we came, the three cocktails on tap were: rose sangria, Sea-Tease, and I Love Huckleberry. We tried all three, and our favorites were definitely the huckleberry followed by the sangria. The Sea-Tease had an interesting taste to it that we weren't a huge fan of. Reminder to self to avoid seabuckthorn liqueur if I ever see it on the menu anywhere again... My friend also ordered wings from the HH food menu ($12 only) and enjoyed them. I enjoyed the drinks and the food with my girlfriend, but we could barely hear each other. I'm pretty sure I spat in the servers ear (accidentally!) trying to yell my order in her ear. Even with my mouth as close to her eardrum as possible, I had to repeat it three times. People are yelling over the music and then even more people are yelling over the people that are yelling over the music, and this goes on in a never-ending loop until the decibel level is through the roof! Chill hipsterish place. Great for drinking one's evening away. Parking is available on the side streets. There are also metered spots on Main. The lounge is surprisingly not too loud. Like most lounges, the place is dimly lit. The lamp shades have pictures of Queen Victoria both on the outside and inside. Looks like it was taken right off a Bombay Sapphire bottle. We shared the Poutine ($12), it was very quite decent, the fries were crispy and the gravy didn't feel too heavy, there was an ok amount of cheese. However, for the price, the portion felt a bit lacking. I had the Niçoise salad ($17). I thought everything tasted good and the tuna in particular was quite good. Came here spontaneously with friends. As I remember it it's always a bit too loud which is annoying to start with when you're having a conversation. Service was pretty good but I have to share my major beef with the charcuterie board. What a scam!!!! Don't ever order that thing. It was so tiny and pathetic for $22 that we ended up not even finishing it because it was too awkward to share - not enough of anything for anyone. Like tiny. Visited Cascade Room for the first time last night and had a really great experience! I was the first to arrive in my group and luckily was able to snag a large booth for the 7 of us. I know that this spot gets fairly busy later into the night, so I'm happy that we were able to get a big table early on. Since we got in at 5, we were able to catch the last hour of happy hour. I was impressed with all their HH offerings! Beers and wine were on HH as well as all their cocktails on tap. They also had about a dozen food offerings, which is pretty impressive since most bars/pubs only offer a few items food-wise on their happy hour menu. Besides happy hour food and drink, their menu is quite extensive, and reminds me of drinks and dishes I would get in a fancier pub in the UK. Their cocktail menu looked delicious and I wanted to try almost everything! To drink, I got the rum & pecan old fashioned (although the winter mule was calling my name) and to eat, I got the chips & curry. My drink was delicious. The touch of pecan was really nice and I loved that it wasn't too sweet. The chips & curry hit the spot perfectly and the portions were generous for $8. I'd happily get both of these again. I also tried a few of my friend's hot wings and really enjoyed those as well - large, perfectly crispy, and saucy, just how I like 'em! Right from the start, our server was on top of everything. I wish I got her name, because she was awesome. She made sure to check on us frequently, making sure we never had an empty drink and always clearing glasses and plates. Hands down the BEST Cod and Chips I've had in North America!!!. Being English I really find it hard to find decent Fish and Chips here and in the States. The fish portions are usually like fish nuggets and not the whole fish fillet like in the uk and the Chips are usually small frozen french fries. Apart from the fish skin not being on one side like in the UK, Yours was perfect! AND you even had Mushy Peas!!! GOLD. This is a great place to come for appies and drinks. Every time I've come here, it's been with a different friend, and each time we always say we've never come for dinner before. Anyway, the standout appetizer is the Cascade chicken wings. They're really saucy and also still crunchy, and also quite large. The chickpea fritters and truffle fries weren't anything special but seemed to be good quality. I really like that they have cocktails on tap, so they cost a bit less. They are always tasty, not too sweet and fresh tasting. Bonus is that if you come on Thursday, it's happy hour pricing on the on tap drinks all night. The service has always been good, and I like the busy but not too crazy atmosphere. The server split our bill without asking, which was nice. The portion was filling enough & the gravy wasn't too salty which was nice, but still a little flavourless, as by the fifth bite I was already getting tired. I'm not sure what it is with the service of this place, but in recent years, every time we seem to experience hostile services and I'm done with it. Immediately, the woman on the phone said, "depending how far away you are you won't make last call because we're doing it right now." And I explained that we were close and asked if they were doing last call at 7:30 (I understand the liquor laws changed for March 17th because I work in the service industry). She got super snippy with me and asked "no, are you stupid? We do last call at 7:45. I already said that." I repeated back to her that she told me last call was happening at the moment and she said, "look, do you want a table or not? I'm not gonna stay on the phone much longer." Not bad spot on Main Street. We found parking a block away on 11th at 9:30pm on a Saturday. Not too busy, but still lively. I got the Clover Club from the cocktail menu - suggested for the egg white and something light/refreshing. I found it had a strange bitter aftertaste, but all the guys at my table (who were having beers but tried my drink) liked it. I didn't think the egg white was that great - the foam was not as smooth as I've had at other cocktail bars and didn't add to the texture the way a good thick, creamy egg white foam can. It's been a few years since I have visited Cascade. I've always thought of it as a rowdy drinking joint for Friday and Saturday nights. Cascade was my dinner dates choice and although I wasn't particularly excited to eat here, as you would expect things can change over the years. Overall, I had a pleasant experience. On entry, It's a beautiful venue with wonderful ambiance; cozy with dim lighting and candles. Ambiance is a 5 for sure and seems like a romantic date place, except you can't hear your date! I was hungry so dinner was early at about 5:30 which lead to luckily catching the tail end of happy hour. HAPPY HOUR is the typical 3-6pm. Both food deals and booze! I was actually rather impressed with the size of the Food Happy, with almost a dozen options of discounts to please your belly. We tried two happy specials; 1/2lb free-range chicken wings and the Avocado, artichoke and kale dip. Both dishes were presented well and I was impressed with the portion of dip and its accompanying naan bread. Unfortunately, with the dip I found it way too citrusy, like they used too much lemon or lime juice which was overpowering. The wings were a reasonable size, breaded and deep fried at $8, buffalo flavored was just regular Frank's Hot sauce, nothing special. For dinner, we ordered the Chicken Tika Masala dish for $18. This is a larger meal so we happily shared it. If you arrive to Cascade and you are like HANGRY or your insides are starting to digest themselves, order this meal and you will not be disappointed. I thought the Chicken Tika came with both basmati rice and naan bread (proper like it should), but we were changed an extra $3 for the bread. So for the whole meal it is actually $21. It also came with cute little sides of chutney and pickled onion. For not being an Indian restaurant it was quite good and I would recommend this dish. My Old Fashioned served with a ginger slice was almost life changing, except it was a bit too sweet. FOOD/DRINK:  40/50 A WICKED happy hour! Looking forward to explore it further another time I'm feeling more than peckish. Their house cocktails are excellent!!! This go around we had the Green beans which were lathered in exceptional amounts of parmesan, balanced with tangy grainy mustard. Suffice to say, I turned into a vacuum cleaner and put them in my belly very quickly even though they were a tad on the greasy side. No shame. I ignored that and slowly washed it down with two of their featured cocktails that I unfortunately forget the name of. They were fun, creative, and well made. Everything we tried had me curious to come back for more! SERVICE/SUPPORT STAFF:  18/30 Our server was brand new the Cascade team and a complete sweet heart! I adored her and she got us everything we needed until she got another 6+ tables within 15 minutes. Nothing grinds my gears in a restaurant more than watching the business suffer because there's not enough help on the floor. In fact, we actually did want to stay longer for more food and drinks but she couldn't keep up with the flow. Not her fault; this ones on the managers shoulders. I hope to have a different experience next time. ENVIRONMENT/VIBE:  15/20 It was great until I saw that I couldn't be taken care of properly as a guest. I hate waiting longer than I need to. Other than that vibe kill, Cascade has a great thing going on when they're rollin. Accessible from all parts of the city, and one of main streets favourite spots to chill for some good drinks and fun food from what I know. We were immediately seated at our chosen spot - 2 of 4 bar seats in front of the restaurant where the garage patio door is. Water is also served as we were seated. We were on the prowl for good cocktails so we tried their HH cocktails on the Tap ($2 off usual $10 cocktails = $8) - 1 Moscow Mule and 1 Negroni. Cocktails came about 5mins later. They tasted very generic and standard - nothing else much to say other than it was pre-mixed in a bottle and poured out. In addition, it is supposed to be 2oz? It tasted more like 0.5oz. I rather go elsewhere for the cocktails nearby that is about the same price with more flavour. The cocktails were a turn off that we decided not to try their HH food menu. Overall, ok experience. Nothing on TV on a Monday night? Go to Cascades for Monday night trivia! It's better than Jeopardy! The questions are actually pretty hard, unless you are a trivial pursuit champion, which I am obviously not. The questions were hard for me because most of them consisted of geography and history. There were ten questions in music where you had to name the song and artist, which I did excel in, as well as questions regarding the World Cup, but I am not a ringer when its comes to Social Studies. Not only do they have small prizes for the winning teams, but they also donate the money raised to a charity of your choice at the end of the game. Here is the run down: you show up with your team (I believe you can have a team of up to 4) it is $2 for each team member to play (all of which goes to a charity that is picked raffle style at the end of the game, last night's charity was Covenant House.) There are three rounds of questions and after each round your paper goes to the next table for marking, all high school styles. We got so sucked into the trivia, since we had six non-rowdy hecklers in two groups of 3, that we actually ended up getting a parking ticket outside since we forgot about our car.... D'oh! Damn the City of Vancouver for extending parking meters until 10pm! Our waitress was not only prompt, but also hilarious, so going back just to be served by her would be awesome. The mushroom pizza and polenta fries were great, even if they were a little bit greasy - but we had enough people that sharing was never an issue, so when my stomach cried out that it was full of deep fried goodness I could pass the plate on. Also, the cheese plate that our competition ordered was keeping my eyeballs off their scorecard and onto their dinner, plus $8 for a double rum and diet coke, I am sold! This is, to date, one of my favourite places in the city to come and watch a game. It's a big open space with a huge projector screen in the back if you want to enjoy as a group. I've come here for Hockey, Football (proper football, not American), and the odd baseball game. I love it. I tried their burger for the first time recently and it might make my "top 5 burger in vancouver" list that I'm not so secretly working on. With a cocktail list that reads like an encyclopedia of modern day drinking you'll be hard pressed to find just one beverage that takes your fancy. Choose from champagne, vintage, fall, true American, and old school concoctions. My friend managed to decide upon their signature cocktail, aptly named "The Cascade Room Cocktail" and raved about it. This one comes with apple and lime juices, vanilla bean, bitters, egg white, and bourbon. For me the bourbon was a little heavy-handed but my friend really enjoyed it. I had their "Casual sex in a hot tub in whistler at Christmas" cocktail, a mixture of Canadian rye, tangerine, maple syrup, orange bitters, and candied maple pecans. The name is what grabbed me and I suppose I was in the mood for something a little creamier because the candied maple pecans were the only things I really enjoyed. It was just a little bitter for me. Onto the food however and I loved their calamari. I have had some bad experiences with calamari in the past but these were salty, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth pieces of crispy goodness. They came with a chipotle dipping sauce and a wedge of lemon. My friend whom had the signature cocktail told me that previously she has enjoyed the Albacore, describing it as "phenomenal". She has also enjoyed the Charcuterie Trio in the past saying it was "traditional and very good". The atmosphere at Cascade is fashioned from soft mood lighting and sexy music such as Morcheeba, which was low enough so that you could still talk over the top and not resort to screaming at your dinner mates. One side of the room is covered with mirrors, giving the illusion of the restaurant being larger than it already is. The rest of the place either had black or stunning red wallpapered walls, exposed wooden ceiling beams, and the most awesome retro-esque lampshades featuring prints of Queen Victoria. There are tables, lounges at the back, a bar to sit at, as well as booths. We chose an extremely comfortable booth, a good idea if you're with a few people who you wish to talk to. All in all I would definitely recommend The Cascade Room. The ambience, staff, service, food, and drinks are top notch. You can't really go wrong. read more

IT's been a while.. but I'm back on the treck to try Vancouver's 101 Best Eats!!!!!!! Synopsis: After the awesome times at Chaise Lounge .. I was still hungry from the alcohol consumption.. and believe me, I ate lots while I was there already. While the gang had gone to Pourhouse (which I wish I was able to accompany all you lovlies), my two sidekicks and I went to Cascade (Cyndi chose to cool down from the alcy, and her car was still on Main so for convenience, it didn't work). Walking into the Cascade on Tuesday, the crowd was starting to thin out, but still groups and couples filling up 2/3s of the space. We were placed in a booth in the back and yes.. I had to get them: Subject: POLENTA FRIES - $6.00... I'm interested in polenta... always knew it had something to do with corn, corn meal to be exact. Not sure if it actually tasted like corn, although I'm not sure it's supposed to... oh right, and the calamari to share as well too.. Believe me, these were not small share plates, but actually bowls with lots of substenance. The polenta fries were clearly deep fried but HUGE, you might as well call them polenta planks. They had lots of filling, like the way I like my yam fries... and the sauce definitely helped. Man they were delicious. The calamari was pretty battered up, and it wasn't anything over the top, but they had a good chew to them and I think they are still worth getting if you're in need of an appy and like calamari.
