The Black Frog benefits from a fantastic location, just down a side street from the Gastown Steam Clock, thus with each toot of its steamy, sweaty horn (i.e. every 15 minutes), you'll find yourself acutely aware of such temporal truths as: your wait time until being greeted and seated; the time it takes before someone comes to take your order, how long it takes to manifest tableside, the duration of your meal, and the interval until your check arrives. Great for customers; not so much for the servers! At times, I'm sure they feel the pressure as acutely as the water heating up in the pipes underground! Fortunately, the staff here at the Black Frog hop to it in an efficient, even if our particular server seemed a little green around the gills. A tadpole, if you will. Sadly, they were also out of some component required to make their signature cocktail, the Black Frog Raki, so I'm unable to croak about that specific beverage. They were similarly unable to concoct an Old Fashioned due to a shortage of another spirit, so I ended up with a Kentucky Mule, my wife with a Gin Martini, and an order of calamari split between us. Tragically, no frog's legs on the menu. Maybe that would have been a bit too on-the-nose (on-the-nares)? Alright, I'm sure you're all sick of the puns by now. Even though it's been a ribbeting review....dammit, I did it again. I'm sorry, I keep frogetting to be serious when writing these things. I'm no lily-pad-livered liar; you can de-pond on me! While our server was polite, Coke and Pepsi are not the same thing. Also, asked for buffalo on side of my wrap - it's on it. And it had tomatoes - not listed on the menu and I asked to add cheese - found one sliver. Mom got the Yorkies and was not impressed. The horseradish sauce covered the whole thing and didn't have much flavor. Fries were over done. Not even ketchup could help them! Cute place, water view. Server was very nice. Oilers playoff game tonight first tome at Black Frog for an Oilers game, went in with Oilers Jersey and McDavid socks, also wore pants just in case. Was seated at bar, thought sweet will have quick access to drink service. I was wrong despite making constant eye contact with bartender and making gestures that i was in need of libations to cure my dehydration and playoff hockey anxiety getting served was near impossible. I eventually had to flag the manager to ensure my side of the bar was being served. This was a constant theme though out the night. The Oilers game play was the same as the service, lacking. The chicken wings were good but the service was poor. And that is being generous. I needed cocktails to drown my sorrows of the Oilers performance but was left wanting from my hockey team and the bartender. I spent $150 there tonight , would have e been more if service would have been attentive. Now I know money is better spent cooking chicken wings in air fryer, stocking fridge full of booze and having friends and neighbors over for drinks and wings instead of going to this establishment. Disappointed by Oilers game play tonight but more disappointed by service, it was apparent that was not their priority either not coming back anytime soon. Nice quiet underrated pub in the heart of Gastown, just N of the steam (electric?) clock. Parking here is awful. Not sure what to say. Look for a loading zone in the evenings. The place is Irish themed. Bar area has a nice wall of liquor. Plenty of wood trim. Fairly decent beer selection. Staff are friendly. No complaints. Again, I rarely give 5 stars, but I absolutely loved this place!! Our family had gotten into town late and we were hungry. It's a great location right next to the water. I'm sure the view during the day is awesome. Our server was so helpful and appropriately attentive which I really appreciate. Now the food: Highlights: Fish and Chips - we just got back from London and had fish and chips. Probably three times while we were there and these were better. The batter was fluffy and not soggy at all. The fish flakey. Would absolutely get again. Poutine - I know you can find poutine everywhere but these are some of the best we've ever had. The mushroom was absolutely key. Amazing flavor. Could not stop eating. The location is great as it's tight next to the Steam Light. Food can be described as higher end pub food. The prices for beer even during Happy Hour are steep running $6.75 -$9.00 for craft beers. My wife's Halibut and Chips was one the best she ever had. My Pork Schnitzel was cooked well but I found it lacked flavor and the portion size was too much. The accompanying side vegetables were awesome and tasted as if they were cooked on a smoked grill. Overall was a good experience but wished I ordered the Pierogi's. read more

I was planning on starting this review by saying "this place is underated..." but it is 4-stars on yelp, so I guess I am not the only one. Nothing fancy here, but a nice calm atmosphere to enjoy a few drinks and bites with friends. Slightly tucked away from water st, but still in view of the steam clock, you get to take in the usually tourist-filled gastown from the calmness of the bar while sipping a drink. Nice little pub with solarium seating and a nice casual environment. They have a great offering of local beers on tap, as well as bombers, bottles, and a full bar. I was excited to try the Yorkies, mini roast beef filled Yorkshire puddings. They were okay, but the roast beef seemed over cooked from reheating, and I couldn't taste the horseradish in the mayo. Yummy food and nice atmosphere. You could miss it, because it is off to the side without a big sign. There were options for the whole family, with burgers that have very large parties at a good price, a vegetable wrap full of goodness and flavor, and some oh so tender and delicious halibut fish and chips. This was such a disappointment. We picked this place for lunch after reading some positive reviews. The location is nice in Gastown but the view from the restaurant was lame, a construction site. Our server asked a million times what my drink was and she couldnt understand what I want, a Bacardi Breezer god damnit! The breezer wasn't a Bacardi though, it was a copycat made with rum, who puts rum and orange together? Regarding the food, pretty bland, had the schnitzel burger which was a schnitzel in between burger buns; and the triple decker sandwich which was ok, nothing special. Not impressed! This was our first meal during our visit to Vancouver and it did not turn out to be an ideal experience! Let me first tell you that we were extremely satisfied with the service and the drinks. The young lady who served us was very attentive and friendly. The bartender mixed awesome drinks. However, for dinner I ordered a salad with grilled salmon and with my first bite of salmon I could tell that it had had seen its day in the fridge. I could not finish the meal, but did not make mention of my dissatisfaction to our server. However, she noticed it and surprised us by taking it off the bill. I thought this was a very classy touch. So I am giving Black Frog Eatery a 4 star rating for the excellent service and the drinks, but only a 2 for the food. Let me also add that based on the other reviews I have read here, am willing to consider the possibility that what I experienced was the famous "last piece of salmon in the fridge at the end of that particular week" syndrome and that does not happen here often! read more

We came here during lunch hour and it was a nice break from shopping in Gastown. For appetizer, we ordered poutine. It was our very first time trying it, and I must admit it was delicious. The cheese curds had melted and made our fries cheesy; just the way I like it! For our main course, we all ordered the Moon burger. It comes with melted Brie and caramelized onions, and also the typical lettuce and tomato. All of their burgers here are made well-done. In all honesty, I am impressed on how they cook their burgers. In other places, I refrain from ordering well done because it turns out dry, lacking flavor or even small in size. However, their 'well done' burgers here are tender, juicy and must weigh a pound! It's unfortunate that they aren't available in the States. Hopefully next time I visit Vancouver, I'll be sure to come back again. read more

While touring Vancouver, we stopped for what we needed to be a quick dinner before returning to our puppy. It's in an old building by the waterfront and has a cool old fashioned bar, and seating that opens up to the outside. We waited longer than we wanted to, but probably felt that way because we were in a hurry. They seemed shortstaffed, too. My partner ordered a BLT and fries with a side salad, and I ordered a halibut sandwich. You really can't go wrong with a ƁLT and it was really good, as were the fries and salad. The salad dressing was delicious (I snagged most of the partners' salad). My halibut sandwich was lightly breaded, not greasy, the fish tasted fresh, cooked perfectly, but overall, the sandwich was kind of boring. Good, just not craveable. I added extra of their homemade tartar sauce, which helped somewhat. The service, while she was friendly, was a little lacking. We had only one fork and one napkin, and she wasn't able to or just didn't come back by and check in. Again, I think that they were shortstaffed. I'd probably go back and try something else if we were ever back in Vancouver. read more

We were in Vancouver visiting and decided to eat a late lunch at this restaurant. We were encouraged by good reviews and enticed by poutines. I'd say the poutine was quite good and the server was really nice. We also got chicken wings which were done fairly ok though the blue cheese dip was kind of weird. The rest of the food, however, was actually really bad. I got the house salad, which had a really weird bland dressing. It was almost inedible but I was hungry and the veggies were at least fresh. My husband got Greek salad. I may have been presumptuous in thinking there would be lettuce but no, there was none. The fish and chip that my son got was also not good...the fish being kind of fishy, usually sign of old fish. A friend that was with me got the Schnitzel, which again tasted very strongly of pork and kind of tough. We had such a good eating experience in Vancouver up until this restaurant and were kind of bummed. Came here for lunch with two friends. We ordered poutine ($8), honey garlic wings ($11), and yorkies ($13). We are ordered a few drinks ($5.25 each) -- Paralyzer , Bartender's Root Beer, and another drink that had Kahlua, vodka, and milk I can't remember the name of. It was a good value overall, and everything tasted good. Nothing stood out as being great, but everything was solid. The staff is very nice as well. I also enjoyed the sports decor on the wall. Once upon 3-5 more kilograms ago, during my first visit to downtown Vancouver, I followed the same path many foreign individuals have passed through while in Vancity. I found an accommodation deal on East Hasting St. ($100+ p. night). I thought it wasn't a bad deal since it was high season, in one of the most expensive cities of North America. Besides, being born in a third world country such as mine, immunizes you against almost everything. Long story short, I didn't miss the steam clock in action, I took pictures, maybe even video... In my defence: I wasn't the only one. Where to eat after? Keep walking towards the waterfront and you'll find Black Frog Eatery. The moon smiled to me showing it's melted brie interior. Poutine? Yes please, I'm spoiling myself. I have a pleasant memory about a well executed burger patty. Juicy, not over passed, seasoning on point, thick as two fingers, my head moving up and down while chewing. If ever again I pass through those "I don't care about my body shape" stages, and challenge myself to compare burgers, I'll keep a note about this joint offering a sexy option. I had supper this evening at the Black Frog ... I took a left at Cambie Street/Water Street by the steam clock in Gastown and there is was! The beer selection was excellent. I had Monday's daily special ... a saison from Four Winds in Delta. I ordered chicken wings with honey garlic sauce. They were delicious! Though they were loaded with lots of yummy sauce, the skin was still a bit crispy. I also ordered a side of roast potatoes and they were delicious too. A bit of a bar ly bar; rather sticky and dank. The folks were nice enough and the brews cold. We didn't eat here but did catch sight of rather unappealing food coming from the kitchen. One of the servers was kind enough to charge my dying iPhone while we imbibed. read more

I want to give this place a higher score, but I can not. The drinks were good and so was my food. Everything is priced really well, but the service was absolutely horrible. I came for lunch around 1:30 on a Thursday. There were only a handful of people in the entire restaurant and I was the only person sitting inside. My waitress literally stood at the bar socializing with her coworker and never once checked on me. I eventually had to flag her down and she seemed extremely surprised to have to actually work. I saw another table have to get up and go to the bar to try and get service from their waiter as well. When a place is this slow, the guest should never have to be the one making the effort to place their order. read more

Real tavern feel on the end of a street in the Gastown district right off the corner with the Steam Clock so it's a great people watching place. An outside table is best. Pictured here is their amazing poutine. OMG, heaven! The curds are like little melty pillows and the gravy just perfect. I also had the schnitzel with ligonberry. I missed this pic, but the cutlet took up the whole plate that it covered the veggies and spuds (which I never ate anyway bc of the poutine, but were really good!). My beer was a local amber and damn, if I can remember which, but it was amazing! It just may be what's on the glass, just not sure. read more
