What a fun find in downtown Vancouver. I was looking for a good burger place while visiting the city. This place was just down the street so I thought I'd try it. The entrance is down a level from the Main Street. It's a comfortable place with good decor and friendly staff. The hostess was very nice and helpful with great suggestions. So glad we tried the Aussie poutine because it was great! Seasoned fries, peppery gravy and melted cheese; what's not to like. The dud burger was good, as were the onions rings. I wanted to try the Roo burger because when do you get the chance to try kangaroo? It was ok but not really my taste. The beers on draft are a good mix with lots of mixed drinks to choose from as well. I'm glad we tried this place and would definitely try it again if I'm ever in town. I had a very successful comedy show at this venue and got everyone in through my own efforts. I advertise the hell out of it, and the audience of over 55 was very happy with us. I found out very quickly that the venue had been charging patrons for my tickets, which was not agreed on, so who knows how many people they never paid me for who were forced to pay them for my show rather than the performers getting the profits. At the end of the night they refuse to pay me the agreed-upon compensation for running the show and drawing in a crowd, gaslit me, and were incredibly hostile and rude. They said I should have gotten in 200 people with no stage view and given them the ticket sales. I literally had more than double the people I've had at other shows where I was paid more compensation and the owners were incredibly happy. The manager lied that the owner had left when he was right there. The owner eventually agreed to pay us half what was promised, and then the manager and his wife literally gave us a third of what we were owed. Went back to the owner at the back, when they said that he had left again and told us to gtfo, and again the owner told them to pay us, and then they cheated me out of an extra $20 and told us they didn't care about our patron's business. Not a single person at this bar is Australian, the nachos and poutine I tried sucked and were gross. They charged my performers for food and drinks when they agreed they'd cover it. I was told by other people that they charged them for extra drinks. This is the worst experience I've ever had at a venue or in a decade of running shows. And the manager threatened to cancel me from other venues for expect pay agreed on, as I have at all shows. If you want to go to an authentic Australian place, the only thing these Persians have in common is the way they treat people is criminal. read more

She was just impressive to watch making shots( this bar has a lot of them!) pouring taps ( they have some good ones). We ordered some steak bites and fries. It was good. A fun little Austrialian-themed watering hole and after work wind-down joint, complete with beer, wine, cocktails and a menu listing all sorts of comfort food options. The place is downstairs which adds a cozy sort of vibe. I was here to meet up with Yelp friends including the lovely Jasmine A. So we had a great time! Stopped by Moose's Down Under for some appetizers and drinks one evening in the city. I'm embarrassed to admit that in my travel-worn state, I initially thought that the "Down Under" part of their name was referring to the fact that you walk down a set a stairs to enter this restaurant (very New York City-esque) but it was in fact, a connection to Australia - which immediately clicked when our waiter promptly introduced himself to us with an Aussie accent. Silly me. I didn't select the place... I was just along for the ride. My dining partner and I ended up with some Chicken Satay Bites and Fries, both of which were pretty tasty! I enjoyed the seasoning on the Fries very much. The drinks were a welcome addition to our little meal. I cannot speak to the authenticity of the menu's connection to Australia as I have never visited, but I do not think we selected options that were too representative of the country's culinary inclinations anyhow. The food was good, not great. What ended up standing out to me was the service. Several waiters made their way over to our table, so we were able to order promptly and get refills on our beverages with little wait. Place was cool in terms of loud pub atmosphere and Australian beer and if that is what you are looking for you have found it! (Also hockey on tv). 8+ TV all with same teams on. First time I went to look for the place I couldn't find it. I looked up & down Pender Street, between Howe & Hornby, on the north side of the street, according to the map marked on Yelp. But I found no sign of it. So I went back to my hotel & wrote in my travel log "Moose Down Under no longer exists." Two days later, I tried again. Having read the recent reviews, I realized it has to exist. This time I went along the south side of the street & there it was. The place has a homey & neighborly vibe. I felt very relaxed here. I am very interested to try Australian food & drink, since I'll be going to Australia next year. I went for the Roo Burger, the hamburger made from kangaroo meat. For Australian beer, I had the Cooper's Stout, then the Cooper's Sparkling Ale. The wait staff was very attentive, frequently making sure I had everything I wanted. The kangaroo meat didn't taste like anything I ate before, so I can't describe it. All I can say is that I enjoyed that burger to the last bite. The beers also went great with it. We tried this place because it was a close walk from our hotel. The ambiance was good as it's a sports bar. The service was great. The food was just ok but there was plenty of it. We tried the Aussie poutine. It had good flavor and the parts that weren't covered in gravy were crispy. I had the fish and chips. It was a little too greasy for me but had good flavor. I'd go back again if I return to Vancouver. It's a neat little place to eat. It was kinda hard for me to find until I realized it was one flight of stairs down (think New York restaurant). I feel like I'm late coming to the party. I just "discovered" this place. I know, it's been around a while, right? And it's known for its great Aussie charm, expansive pub menu, and weekly trivia nights, right? Well, I have to say, it totally lives up to the hype! On one of the many Vancouver subscriptions I get on Facebook, one week's post showcased city trivia sites, and Moose's was ranked at the top. I love trivia, and since I'm slowly venturing out more post-COVID, I decided to check this place out. I made reservations for a table for 3 friends and myself for a Wednesday night (their trivia night), for 6pm (trivia starts around 7pm), and we all had SUCH a fun evening! There are daily drink specials, and this night, the special was for Long Island Iced Teas. I had a few and they were great! And for dinner I had a BLT with a side salad, and it too was great. (Nothing special, but it was not greasy, the bread and ingredients were fresh, and it was like comfort food you'd get at a local diner). Everyone in my party was happy with their meals and drinks. And our server was attentive and friendly. Trivia was AWESOME! The host was SO personable, and the rules were casual and fun, with the questions covering a broad range of topics. I've not been to a bar's trivia night in years, but I used to go a lot in Seattle, and I've not known a place to give out "prizes" of free shots and /or beer to winning teams, or to acknowledge "celebrations" (birthdays, anniversaries, new jobs, etc.) also with free shots or beers. It was like one big friendly get-together, with the whole bar singing "happy birthday" to two celebrants, and everyone cheering everyone else on. Such a casual, friendly vibe here. Very enjoyable. (My team, incidentally, was leading after the first and the second rounds, shockingly enough! Then we crashed and burned. hahahahaha). I should note that the whole place was clean, even the washrooms. The host made an announcement after the trivia game that they'll have karaoke here later this week and a comedy show on Saturday, too. So clearly this place has other events, other than their weekly trivia nights. Good to know. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and plan on returning. I'm thinking of organizing an UYE here, perhaps in the fall, for fellow Yelpers. Who's in?!?! read more

Recently visited this place again for a weekday lunch. Their food is still really good and service was excellent. Drinks were served promptly and when one wasn't correctly made they were quick to fix it. A friend of mine recommended getting a Super Parmies so I ended up with a Thunder from Down Under including: Tomato Sauce, cheese, pineapple, beets and a fried egg on top. I'd highly recommend sharing this dish if you can as it can be quite overwhelming for the average person. Support this local business cause it's delicious! read more

This family run Australian pub hasn't changed it's decor since it opened and I like it like that! Glad to say good service and good eats also haven't change. A visit this past Thursday brought back fond memories when I worked in the downtown core 20 yrs ago and come often for a burger lunch with the boss or happy hour with friends. Prior to COVID19, this underground gem was always packed for happy hour and trivia nights. Now it's quiet without the office workers and crossing my fingers the pub will survive and return to the fun times. Let get to the good stuff: Started with the special drink of the day, the mango colada $7 or 8. So freshen that I can't remember the price. Steak Bites: Australian striploin grilled to the perfection medium-rare and topped with salt & pepper. A good tasty appetizer, $14.99 - 30% happy hour. Super Parmie Greek Goddess: chicken parmigiana topped with sun-dried tomatoes base, black olives, red onions, tomatoes and feta. The Parmie is a pub staple in Australia and served with chips (fries to us) and salad. The served asked if we wanted ketchup sauce and I had to pause before squeaking out "yes" and then a perplexing but friendly look back. I'm thinking might as well be adventurous. The ketchup sauce is a bottle of Heinz Ketchup for my fries. Had a good chuckle and now in the know. It's a big dish so come hungry or share. Regular $23 but $19 on Thursdays. Mini Lamingtons, $4.99. Got 3 bite sized sponge cake coated with chocolate icing and coconut. Served with a dallop of whip cream and served cold. This very traditional Aussie dessert was moist and soft. read more

If you come from a land down under, you may want to check out Moose's. The three of us had planned on a mid-week dive into Moose's, what we didn't plan for is trivia night. The sign at the door was uninviting, but we still pressed on. When we entered, we were welcomed in and someone managed to find us a table in the corner. They even dropped off trivia supplies so we could join in the inquisitive atmosphere. Taking a look over their menu, what looks fun is their different takes on parmas. Traditional pubs in Aus have the chicken schnitzel on top of chips, covered in a layer of ham, tomato sauce and cheese (with salad on the side.) At Moose's you can find one topped with mac n cheese, a Greek/Italian/Indian version, one even topped with sauerkraut, all different takes of the beloved chicken parma. I didn't go for anything adventurous like that, but instead ordered the Blonde Ale and Salmon Burger. That burger was bomb. Juicy, seasoned and filling, it was good and held together til the last bite. Orders are placed under your name, service was very quick and friendly, a few people came by to check on us. Moose's is good for company. The Trivia night is jam packed, keep that in mind if you plan on coming on Wednesday. There's no cost to play and you could win free drinks. Win! Came here tonight with a group of 5 other friends as a friend got Mooses Down Under to do a fundraiser for the recent tragic Australian bush fires. There was an entrance by donation, all parmies (also called a chicken parmigiana, similar to a chicken schnitzel) ordered a $1 went to the fundraiser proceeds, and a 50/50 raffle. It was also trivia night - yay! I ordered the Aloha special parmies for $18 that are designed after different country flavours. The Aloha had the breaded chicken with ham, tomato teriyaki sauce, pineapple, and mozzarella on top. The regular chicken parmy is for $16.99 so ordering a special parmy for $18 was a no brainer. My friend ordered the Australian Thunder From Down Under parmy that had breaded chicken with tomato sauce, beetroot, pineapple, mozzarella, and fried egg on top. Both parmies were huge, delicious, and served with fries and a green salad. Highly recommend getting this dish! So why the 3 stars? Well my other friends ordered a kangaroo burger, kangaroo sliders, and kangaroo skewers. All of them found the kangaroo meat too dry and a bit tasteless. The kangaroo sliders were pretty awful, they were served on completely white buns that were super dry. It was so bad that my friend only ate one of the small sliders and just had some of my Aloha parmy for the entire night. Initially our server was friendly and attentive at the beginning of the night but once we ordered and our food was delivered we literally never saw her again for the entire night. I get it was a bit busy for trivia night but the restaurant was only half full and no one came to check up on us, or refill our waters, for the 2.5 hours we were there. Finally, I flagged down another server who refilled our waters, got us a take out box, and settled our bill. It was a fun night to fundraise for a worthy cause and test our trivia knowledge. This place is amazing!! Incredibly delicious food and friendly staff made for such a great dinner! I was feeling hungry so I ordered the Roo Burger since I've never eaten Kangaroo meat before with mixed greens as well as the Outback Jack Chicken Parmie. Mom got the Baja Steak Salad while dad got the Big DUD burger. We also got the Steak Bites to share. First thing that caught my eye was just how big the chicken parmie was when it came out. Big serving but ohh soo good. I'm glad I got the Outback Jack version as the combination of melted cheese, BBQ sauce, and bacon just added another layer of deliciousness to the chicken beneath it. I also appreciated the side of mixed greens that came with it as it was an actual side salad and not a tiny serving like so many other restaurants give you. The fries were cooked just right and stayed crunchy throughout the entire dinner. But that chicken parmie was insane. Definitely a must try when you eat here. My Roo burger was good! Overall, any difference between the meat compared to a normal beef burger was quite subtle and I think anyone would be able to enjoy it without issue! What I really loved though was the addition of that blueberry relish that came on the burger! It's underneath the meat patty in my photo so you can't see it but wow. Next time I'm going to ask if I could have a small cup of just that blueberry relish to dip my burger in. I don't know how else to describe it beyond it being different than your usual ketchup or mustard or mayo condiment but functions in the same manner but tastes a million times better. I loved it. Mom really enjoyed her salad. The size was substantial and filling for her. The steak bites were also delicious! I'm so glad we stopped here. Our Australian waiter was friendly the entire evening. Our food was wonderful and filling. I would definitely eat here again. If you're thinking about trying one of their special chicken parmies, go for the Outback Jack! read more

This place is a hidden gem. I found out about it 9 years ago when my colleague from last job took me here for lunch. The name tells you that the restaurant is in the basement. Prices here are still very very reasonable. A lunch around $13 is not bad for such a big portion. This place serves Aussie food (not a lot of restaurant claims itself being Aussie food type). So they are popular for their meat pie and meatloaf etc. They also serve burgers. A special burger they have is the kangaroo burger. Also very popular on their menu. The place is pretty much the same look and feel 7 years ago. The business owner used to hire people who looks like her but when I went recently this is no longer the case. So back to today. I recently ordered the Aussie meat pie. The portion is a bit smaller than what I remembered. The pie was quite salty. But even though I said portion is a bit smaller than before, it was still pretty huge that I can't finish it. The meat pie came with fries (very hot and fresh). Colleague ordered the ham a Swiss sandwich with soup and he said it was really good. Overall for the price I was paying, I liked it. read more

So much fun! I go here for trivia night and i'ts a blast. There are food and drink specials, and 4 rounds of trivia throughout the night. There are prizes for the top team, with an opportunity to risk it all for the cash prize jackpot. The burgers here are great. Fresh meat, well cooked, good toppings, good prices. They're generous with the portions. I recommend the Big Dud burger, or the Roo Burger (yes, it's kangaroo meat). Beer selection is solid. They have a house lager brewed by Big Rock. Fair amount of beers on tap, and many more in bottles. It's great for larger groups. They take reservations and tend to not be crazy busy. We've had work events here and everyone is always pleased. They have a huge selection of different chicken parmesan styles, like the Oktoberfest. There's also a 1Kg chicken parmesan eating challenge here that I expect to attempt one day... it's about 4 portions of their regular chicken parma on a mound of fries. There aren't a ton of these casual fun pubs around. Too many of these types of places are disappearing to become remodeled big-box semi-upscale restaurants. No business or leisure trip is complete without a few solo adventures! My Aussie friend told me about the amazing meat pies that exist in Vancouver, so I had to check this out for myself. Moose's Down Under was walking distance from my hotel, and I was in the mood for a drink, so I decided to check it out. It's located downstairs in a basement, which definitely contributes to this "down under" vibe. The restaurant was pretty empty since I came here midday on a weekday. I had a whole booth to myself, though I could and should have sat at the bar. Anyways, I ordered a meat pie and an IPA, which is a great combination. Fresh, hot, and filling meat pie, cooled down by an icy beer. Definitely felt at home. I texted my friend and told him to meet me here for more drinks. We ended up doing shots... the names of which are not Yelp-appropriate. Let's just say that there are some "creative" (read: dirty) names of shots on the menu. So many options, so little time and liver strength. What a wonderfully chill time here! Seems like a great place for special events, trivia nights, and just relaxing with a good group of friends. read more

Last Visited: October 25, 2019 I have been eating lunch with my colleagues on many occasions over the years at Moose's. We typically defaulted to this place for lunch for group gatherings because we can get a table quite easily. On this visit, I ordered the steak salad and it was alright; the veggies were fresh and the steak was under-seasoned but alas. A lot of my co-workers ordered the Chicken Parmesan since they viewed it as the best thing on the menu. After discovering Moose's Trivia Night a few weeks ago, I went back on March 26th, this time with a group. Our group was quite large, 24 people (I had made a reservation), and despite our group size and how busy the place was (Trivia Night is very popular), the service was great. They were polite, timely with our orders, didn't neglect us, and the bills were accurate. The food isn't anything special, but it's tasty, reasonably priced, and the staff are always friendly. I'm definitely going to make Trivia Night a regular thing. Also, there are wine specials on Wednesdays. Woohoo! read more
