The Alibi is dead. I didn't know. This was the place where I proposed to my wife, this was our first date. It was one of the cornerstones of my love for Vancouver. It was my first time coming here kind of by accident. Went in right as they opened and there was a decent happy hour menu from 4-6. The beer selection was pretty good a ton of options on tap that I don't usually see. Mixed drinks were good as well , especially liked the whiskey sour. The other one I tried was a blended mango margarita and it was just perfect not overly sweet. Also tried calamari and it was tasty but found the portion to be slightly small for the price. Went here twice in the month of November for two different birthday celebrations and only had beers. The first time I went was on a Saturday evening without reservations and for a party of 12! I was sure that we were not going to get in, but to my surprise they had a table available on their bottom floor! Their bottom floor has a bar where you can order drinks and food. I did not order any food because we just went there to grab some beers, they have an extensive craft beer selection as well as cocktails. I would recommend this place for a laid-back evening with your friends to grab beers and casual meal. The second time I went there, I sat upstairs which was also pretty nice! They have dim lighting making it feel pretty intimate. I didn't get up getting any food that time either, but I'm sure of going back there again and order their meals. We came back to Vancouver for an anniversary weekend and decided we'd head to The Alibi Room because it was our favourite place when we lived here. We immediately noticed up on arrival that it was different. The beer menu was about 1/4 of what it used to be, and when my husband ordered a flight, they were out of two of the beers he chose. Our food arrived and it was not very good. Our friends chicken burger was dry and the bun was very cold, the wings (which used to be my favourite thing in the world) were awful compared to what they used to be. When we were ready to settle our bill, we said we weren't impressed with the food. The manager insisted that he give us free shots of tequila to make sure we left happy. We said that 3/4 of our party were not drinking and we weren't interested in free tequila. He kept insisting on these shots, raising his voice at my husband in the process. We paid and left sad and disappointed in what one of our favourite spots in the city had turned into. What was once a charming dinner spot with great drinks, great food and a great atmosphere has turned into a mediocre restaurant with YouTube on big screens and tacky red LED lights everywhere with almost no beer selection and food clearly sourced from Sysco. Service,food quality, tap selection. Oct 2025 - we returned to our former favorite spot on a weekend back in the city after being away for several years. Everything had changed. The beer list was WAY shorter (like, a quarter what it used to be), the food was barely meh, and the management awful. We had a party of four, all who had been there before. My wife ordered two appies as her main - chicken wings and carpaccio - and I ordered a second wings for the table, along with our mains. The food was so disappointing. The wings were nothing like they used to be. Once my favorite item on the menu, it was now a tiny portion and the once tangy garlic vinegar sauce was bland. My burger was small, and the fries - formerly hand-cut and delicious - were now Sysco wedges akin to what you get at Red Robin's. Two of the beers I tried to order from their already short menu were out. My friend said his chicken was dry and the bun cold. The second order of wings I had made never arrived, despite the server being reminded twice and being told they were coming. When we were getting ready to leave, ten minutes after we had finished eating, I told the server to just cancel the wings. She told me they'd already been cooking, but I told her I wasn't paying for them as we were all ready to leave. The manager came over to do the bill, not introducing himself as the manager, and asked if everything was ok. I told him no - the food was nowhere near as good as it was, the drink menu was poor, and we never recieved one of our appetizers. I told him I didn't believe it was his fault personally, but that I wouldn't be returning. He then told me he didn't want me to leave unhappy, and that he was comping shots for the table, any liquor we wanted. 3 out of the 4 our party were not drinking, and I told him I was not interested in shots. He then started raising his voice at me, telling me he wouldn't take no for an answer. I had to tell him four times I was not interested in free shots, and finally said 'are you comping our meal or are you going to let me pay and leave?' at which point he gave me the machine to pay. He then skipped past the tip option, even though our server was attentive and I would have happily tipped her, as it wasn't her fault the food was shitty. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm really saddened to see this place turn into a shadow of what it once was. With new ownership should come a new name - at least then they would have an alibi. read more

Absolutely careless and pathetic. This legendary spot has fallen so far from where it once was its almost unrecognizable. The beer menu is pathetic, the servers are indifferent and the ambiance is boring. We visited here recently for dinner and the service was truly pathetic. We later found out that our server as a floor manager and that she was dating the bar manager. Nepotism at its finest. There were two servers on, a bartender and approx. 6 tables to serve. It was quiet and we visited around dinner time. This would have been a great opportunity to meet your guests, get to know them maybe suggest some of your features or favourite menu items, but none of the above was done. We were a burden to her day. Perhaps she was going through a tough time and having a bad day, but did we deserve to be on the receiving end of this....no. The food was okay, but don't order the olives. what a joke. The drinks were okay, nothing special. The service and the care for our experience was pure garbage. We are hopeful that the new owners can make moves to restore this landmark spot to the way it was or we fear the Alibi room will be closed soon. We had a classic alibi burger which was pretty good. The burger looks small but it is pretty filling. The rigatoni rose blush was excellent; highly recommend. We also had the crème brûlée which was OK. The place is trendy and plays music on the background. Street parking seems decent. The service was very attentive and professional. read more

A little away from the busier downtown squares, feels like a real "local" place in contrast to all the crowded tourist restaurants. Sit inside surrounded by sunny windows or sit outside and watch an endless stream of folks walking their dogs. Small pub menu but everything was exquisite; the pork belly, the fries, the pasta. Big fan of this place, mostly for the great craft beers. The food is pretty good also - I honestly wouldn't recommend coming here just for the food if you don't plan on drinking simply because there are plenty of restaurants around that have more interesting menus, but I also wouldn't recommend skipping the food if you want to come here. The food menu here is relatively small, but they have some good choices. I've tried the veggie burger and stir fry. The housemade veggie patty was quite good and all the toppings went well with it. The stir fry was also tasty, but too oily for my taste and a little heavy on the noodles. Some people seem to be crazy about the fries, but they're just basic shoestring fries to me. I also had a dessert platter some time ago that I don't remember much about other than everything on it was delicious. The beer though! Before COVID they had a ridiculously massive tap beer list and it seems to have shrunk a little, but it's still a lot and I find it helpful that they organize it by type of beer. Every beer I've tried here has been the among the best I've had. There's a little bit of something for everyone and if you're not sure what to get the staff seems happy to make recommendations. Flights are popular, but if you don't want a whole flight they let you order individual drinks in "mini" 5 oz portions, which is good for me because I don't like to drink a ton but still want to sample different things. The vibe and service are both great. The restaurant has an open, sort of industrial interior, with an upstairs at street level and more seating and another bar in the basement (the basement is surprisingly comfortable). As of my visit yesterday (September 2021) they still have safety dividers up between tables which made me much more comfortable with the seating arrangements. The staff has been very professional every time. Last night, our waitress was generally pretty attentive but somehow difficult to flag down only when we really needed something, but otherwise she was good and I've only had positive experiences with the staff in the past. read more

Came here for post dinner drinks. The interior was spacious with a warm, cozy vibe. Service can be a bit slow but the food and drinks were on point. We got the beer tasting flight, which was an interesting concept with four different beers in small glasses. I only ended up liking 2/4 of mine but you can definitely ask the server to customize the drinks to your preference. The highlight was actually the dessert! They only have one dessert on their menu but make it sooo delicious. The lava cake was incredibly smooth and decadent, and paired along so well with the bourbon ice cream (I wish I can buy this in pints, so good). There's also a downstairs area accessed via a spiral staircase where you'll find more cushioned, intimate seating, a stage, and another bar. Not sure if they serve the entire tap list down there though. A little disappointed that they did not have poutine on their food menu, but their tap list was quite extensive. It might have made up for the lack of a decent small bites selection except for the fact that nearly everything I asked for on the sours menu was 'out' or came with an annoying disclaimer next to the beer of 'UP NEXT'. Some tell you when they'll be released (most on Friday), but others do not, so what's the point of even listing it? Anyways, I did like their flight deal of any 4 beers in 4oz tasters for $12 (plus tax). They also have a rating system for each beer with special illustrations for its sourness, darkness and hoppiness. I wasn't so impressed with 3 of my beers, but the generically named 'flanders red imperial souuuur' from Storm Brewing was decent. It claimed to be the strongest, darkest, most sour beer on the menu and it lived up to it. A mix of jammy and dry black currant with notes of licorice and caramel created quite the sour bomb. I was seeing stars which deserves some applause. It should be noted that they had a vast selection of hoppy beer. Stouts and ciders barely make it onto the menu though. I get the sense that this is the gathering space for plenty of rare beer releases. Proud to see that they were set to showcase a Modern Times beer in the near future even if that beer was only 'Blazing World'. Solid, late night spot to chill at and if you're lucky, you might be rewarded with some rare finds. read more

This was the first place I ate upon arriving in Vancouver and settling down in my hotel room. My friend and I walked from the Fairmont to the Alibi Room. The whole restaurant was candlelit, creating a lively and romantic atmosphere. Too bad I wasn't on a "date" with my friend. I started with a Superflux "Colour & Shape" Hazy IPA to drink, which a decent choice. Not as hoppy as I usually like. It's lighter and fruitier as the name would suggest. For food, I couldn't resist getting the crispy pork belly sandwich, which contains kimchi mayo and pickled vegetables. The pork belly had the perfect ratio of fat and crisp. Everything about the sandwich was delightful, except how expectedly messy it can be. My friend had already eaten, so he just got skinny fries with garlic chili oil and housemade ketchup. Tasty as well! There were a bunch of other items on the menu that I'd probably enjoy more if I had a chance to relax and decompress after getting off the plane. It was delicious and the perfect amount of food for me to finish my plate while not being stuffed or needing more. Best meal we had in Vancouver! Started with a glass of Pinot Noir and a Sour Beer. The raspberry sour was, unfortunately, a bit more sour than I'd like. I should've asked for a taste of it before committing. Oops! The Pinot was fantastic :) At $11 a glass, it was a steal! The steamed Brussel Sprouts had a perfect amount of bacon and seasoning with them. Had they been steamed longer, it might've been dicey but they came out perfectly, they weren't mushy but rather firm and delightful! The warm Squash Salad helped us reach our goal of having SOMETHING healthy while on vacation. The variety of ingredients created a lovely and nuanced flavor profile. The Chicken Wings were okay. I didn't ask if they were breaded and fried, or naked wings with sauce. I don't like breaded wings and unfortunately they were. This is on me, I should've asked. The seasoning they rested on was good! The Pork Cheeks reminded us of braised short rib, but with better flavor. Absolutely the best dish we had and would go back just to have it again. For dessert, we had their chocolate lava cake with homemade bourbon cheesecake ice cream served over crushed graham crackers. The Ice Cream was, hands down, the best ice cream I've ever had. Kind of away from all the bars in Gastown, but what a fun find! The roommate and I walked here after dinner on Sunday, January 17th, a little the after 9pm. We sat at the bar for drinks and an after dinner snack. *Strange fellows' "jonguleur" Belgian style whitbier ($6.75 large) *Tofino's "tuff sess" amber pale ale ($6.75 large) Since they had an extensive beer list, I decided to try some brews. I basically told the bartender I'm normally a fan of Belgian whites so she suggested the strange fellows. It was a little lighter than I wanted so she suggested the tofino as a follow up. I wish they asked me what size beer I wanted as I really wanted the smaller sizes. I had a hard time finishing that 2nd beer. *Nikka pure malt black: Japan ($16) *Double house bourbon ($8.50) The roommate had been drinking straight pours all night so he just stuck to that. He was still a little hungry so we ordered the Charcuterie plate: daily selection, house condiments, warm breads ($17.50). Good assortment of meats and condiments. If I were hungrier, I would have been all over this dish. Great bartenders and a fun place. I noticed people getting beer samplers, but I didn't see it on the menu. Craft beer success in Gastown. In this part of Van City it seems you could throw a stone and hit at least a dozen decent places to have a beer. Being the discriminating beer geek that I am, I wanted a bunch of taps and local craft brews. Alibi Room had a selection that dwarfed the other places we checked out. It was crowded for brunch and we grabbed a few seats at the bar. The barkeep was friendly and chatted with us, pointing out the great IPA he had on cask. That was all I need to hear for round one, Red Racer's Cascade IPA. It turned out to be the best pint I had on our trip. Driftwood Brewing's Farmhand Saison for my wife. While the brunch menu worked for me, the little lady needed a lighter option and the kitchen helped out with her egg white arugula scramble. I enjoyed a delicious Smoked Salmon Benny with roasted potatoes. I know most folks would likely pair their brekkie with mimosas or bloodies, but not us. We saw many of the local brews we hand sampled on our vacation on their taps and were able to sample and try a few more. Tasters were in front of us after a simple mention to the bartender, nice touch! You can also get a flight to try a few out. Round two for me was the North Coast Brother Thelonious Dark Abbey Ale and Tofino Brewing Company's Hoppin' Cretin IPA for Kris. Brunch at "The Alibi Room" in Gastown The Alibi Room is located in a red brick historic building. It is after 2:00 pm and the cacophony of diners offers a lively buzz to the shaker style atmosphere. We are offered immediate seating at the bar (tables are full). Menus are clear and after a brief perusal has one imagining the taste of a seductive custom draft on tap. Natasha (totally dedicated) explains the choices of local draft beer. Atmosphere is unique. We sip libations as Red Union Pacific train passes out the window in front of us. We order the fresh fruit (see photo) and "The Salmon Benny" along with a draft beer. English Muffins (Benny) were crisp and the handcrafted Hollandaise by Chef Craig was delectable. Fruit is succelent and the raspberries are a nice spin on the typical fruit and yogurt offering. My rating is 4.5 Stars on "The Alibi Room." Definitely a fun and lively "Alibi Room" offering good cuisine, service and awesome music "Abba's Dancing Queen" enlightens our spirts during our meal. Hope to be back for dinner and another great dining experience in pleasant Gas Town. On a recent visit to Vancouver, my boyfriend and I decided to consult yelp to see what bars we should visit. And you did not fail us with recommending the alibi room! I've never considered myself a craft beer person, or even particularly a beer person, but the Alibi Room has made me a convert. They have SO many beers on tap, of so many different varieties, and even tell you how hoppy each beer is, so anyone can find something they'd enjoy. I had a Brassneck "Multiweizen" Hefeweizen and a Four Winds Belgian Tripel, and they were probably the tastiest beers I've ever had. Now I'm heartbroken that I won't be able to find them in the states! I guess that's the downside to locally sourced craft beer.. The food was pretty good, too, and is more interesting than typical bar food. I can recommend the fries and the chicken wings--and if you get both, try dipping the fries in the chicken wing sauce! They have a very nice atmosphere, definitely dark as a bar should be, but with a slightly higher average age (I'd say mid-to-late 20s), it wasn't the type of place where'd you have to worry about getting spilled on or anything. Definitely more of a chill and friendly place, which I really appreciate. It should say something that the bathrooms were clean and I didn't have to wait for 15 minutes to use the toilet. In addition, even though this is place known for craft beer, the staff is not snotty about it by any means, and help you out if you don't quite know what you're looking for. Our waitress was awesome and honestly made our experience. We will definitely be back next time we're up in Canada. Update (10/25/16): It's now been a while since my first visit to Alibi room, and the love affair continues. I've been back almost every time I'm in Vancouver, and I recommend it to every one of my friends who goes up for a visit. Everything I love about Alibi is still the case--service is amazing, beer list is 10/10, and the food is on point. Most recently, I tried the pork belly sandwich, which was juicy and crunchy and tangy in all the right ways, and the stuffed pork loin off the fresh list. They somehow manage to make amazing staple bar food with creative twists that satisfies me urge to try new things. Yassss Alibi room. read more
