Best Chinese food that I have ever had! I just don't give 5 star because the service was a bit slow for a large group of people. We ordered various dishes, and everyone was satisfied. Dumplings were really good. Sauted eggplants didn't last more than 2 minutes. The cucumber small dish tastes good. And the meat lovers loved the cumin lamb, although fried shrimp was also good. Our Chinese friends said the sticky rice desert was the best. I am not a fan of Chinese food, but if I want to go to a Chinese place again, Jun will be my first choice. read more

Checked it out during happy hour. It wasn't too busy so we quickly got a table. The happy hour appetizers were essentially just smaller versions of the regular items for a price proportional to what you get - so no deals to be had. The drink specials were only for the light Surly hell ($2 off) plus house wine and well drinks. The server was ok- she interrupted our conversation a few times but was generous in letting us order a HH drink a couple minutes after 6. The $6 La Zi chicken was a bunch of deep fried chicken with no rice and an equal amount of inedible chill peppers(maybe someone would eat them- not me). Cream cheese wontons were small and average in taste. Szechuan dumplings were small, average in flavor. Pork bellies with garlic were fine. Most menu items weren't that interesting to me, but will probably try once more with work colleagues. read more

I've been to JUN a handful of times and love it every time! The soup dumplings and Szechuan dumplings are amazing, both made with pork and have loads of flavor. The Dan Dan noodles are good, they are spicy! The Juan's friend rice was a very big portion and very flavorful and the Chow Fun noodles with beef is also one of my favorites! The drinks are also a great pairing. Parking around the area is usually good and they have free valet, I've always had a reservation and on some nights they've been really busy and other mediocre. Something about the vibe of this restaurant is off. You know the feeling when you walk into a place and you can't put your finger on why, but the atmosphere is just...flat? That's what I felt like at Jun. We ordered fried tofu, the wings, and sticky rice dumplings. The fried tofu was decent, but some pieces were overly salty. The dip it came with was incredibly salty, and tasted like a bottled hoisin sauce. The wings were good, not great. Again really salty (and I love salty foods) and greasy, and the dipping sauce was overwhelmed with sesame oil. 3 sticky rice dumplings took 20 min to get to us, and were almost inedible. Thick batter over a layer of sweet rice mush, and the filling inside tasted like pure sesame oil. It's also overpriced. I mean yea it's the North Loop but...$15 for an old fashioned? $9 for a basic-ish beer? $12 for a small pour of wine? It's not unusual to see these price points but there is a lack of variety in price, it'd be nice to see a few more options under $10. We were so pleased with our meal from Jun - we ordered delivery so I can't speak to the atmosphere, but the food!!! Super authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine - we got bao zi, dumplings, spicy beef noodle soup, and Chinese broccoli. It's always risky to get soup for delivery, but they separated the broth from the noodles and it arrived steaming. Brought me back to ducking into the shops for lunch in Beijing. Just superb. Go to PF Chang's. Tried this place for my bday dinner and I could've chosen better. My first clue was when I called to make a reservation for 15 and they almost hang up without asking for a name for the reservation.... I had to prod the lady if she needed my name... 2nd clue: the place was absolutely dead when we arrived at 6pm, granted it was a Tuesday night so I wasn't expecting it to be packed but not a single soul? In the North Loop? Oh boy... It all came together when the food started showing up. For appetizers, we got the La Zi chicken which was oily and bland. The cheese wontons were ok, the egg rolls were also bland and underwhelming, the Szechuan Dumplings were greasy and nothing special. For main course I got the Mango Chicken. Stay away from it. I had two bites and couldn't muster any more. Figured I'd pack it for lunch and save it for when I'm really hungry at work. Everybody else seemed to share the thought that the food quality was just not there, and for the prices they charge you'd expect a lot better. Place is cool tho. I live down the street so I'm here quite a lot. I lived in Washington, DC and Charlottesville, VA for 8 years in total, home to some of the best Szechuan food in the country, so I'm picky. While this certainly isn't the best I've had, it does the trick when I have a craving for some numbing spices or hotpot. I must admit I haven't tried any of the American Chinese dishes on the menu, but the green beans, beef hotpot, and cumin lamb keep me coming back. Seriously, the green beans are AMAZING. The spice isn't overwhelming from my perspective, and I usually ask them to kick it up from their base level to meet my tastes. The interior is quite fancy for a Chinese restaurant, and the drink and wine/ beer selection is better than what you'd find at most Szechuan places (no mini bottles of Barefoot here!). read more

I have mixed feelings about Jun. I'm nuts for their chive shrimp dumplings. Their veggie lo mein was tastiest I've maybe ever had. The tangerine shrimp was a delight. My brother was very happy with the dan dan noodles (xtra spicy) and my vegetarian sister loved the kung pao tofu. But DAMN the service is beyond bad. I've ordered take out at least 6 times and I think my hair would have to be on fire in order to get anyone's attention when I go to pick it up. I've timed it, it takes more than 5 minutes before a single staffer even acknowledges your presence. But I go back because it's my ultimate comfort food! I brought my family for dinner on a Friday night and while it was hopping, it was by no means SLAMMED. Our waiter was charming and friendly while taking our order, and then it's like he checked out. He never brought my drink (but left it on the tab so I had to ask for it to be removed). Twice they delivered the wrong dumpling, we finally gave up and just ate it. My mom's entree never arrived. We asked three times - two different waiters - and eventually they tried to serve her the wrong one. After more than an hour we gave up on it. I shared my order with her, so we both left feeling like we still needed dinner. The waiter was visibly embarrassed but made no effort to make amends. He barely squeaked out an "I'm sorry." I won't be dining in again anytime soon, and next time I go to pick up take out, I'll be much more aggressive about getting my food and leaving. If you decide to dine in, be prepared for sub par service but a tasty meal - if they remember to serve it. * the free valet on weekends is brilliant, but can take some patience to pull into the one drop off spot. First night in town, we walked to this restaurant in the gentrified area of the North Loop. We ordered the SZECHUAN Dumplings, Hot and Sour soup, Chicken Lo Mein and Dan Dan Noodles. The dumplings and the soup were flavorful but were slightly above room temperature. When we mentioned this to the waitress we hoped that our entrees would arrive with more heat. The Lo Mein was a little warmer and was very tasty but the Dan Dan noodles were again only lukewarm and the sauce on the Dan Dan was think and pasty with a gritty texture. They had a distinct funky flavor that was not appetizing. The Hazy IPA and the Mati Barbera 2017 was a nice red wine from Italy. All in all, the restaurant has a nice ambiance, wait staff were friendly but not overly attentive. read more

I LOVED Jun! I came on a Monday at 5:00 to an empty restaurant (score!) and they happily let me sit anywhere and wait for my girlfriend to arrive even though she was going to be a good 20 minutes. Fast forward - we ordered Spicy Cucumbers on Happy Hour (OMG - get them) and Jun Fried Rice (veggie - extra egg) and it was some of the best fried rice I have ever had! -and I am super picky about my fried rice. The service was also excellent - we even bellied up to the bar to have another drink after we were all finished up. When I saw that they had a Lychee flavored liqueur I asked them to surprise me and make me something with it and out came a wonderful lychee martini with a splash of Tattersall's Orange Crema. YUM. This is a challenging review to write. My expectations for a place that offers hand-mad noodles are very high, and this place came pretty close to meeting them. The 2 noodle soups my husband and I got were good. And the spice-level for my 2-pepper spicy soup was totally where it should have been. The Szechuan dumplings were also better than you'd get most places, handmade wrappers I think. Definitely get those. The tween got lo mein and Tso Tofu. The tofu was extraordinarily well prepared. The noodle quality was good but the taste was pretty bland. The issue is the price. You have to be ready to pay quite a bit more than you would at any other Chinese spot. Overall unimpressed with this place. I won't be going back unless it's for happy hour again and a very small bite. The dim sum here is lackluster really, and only enjoyed a couple things. The Sichuan and fried pork dumplings were pretty good, as were the bao bao (pork) buns, as miniature as they were. The soup dumplings were pathetic and true to other reviews here don't contain any soup and are too small. Basically just meatballs wrapped in dough... and the pork belly was ick. The sauce was decent but it was cold and the texture reminded me of tripe. The waiter said it was supposed to be served cold, and if that's true, I am not here for it! This review is for food only, as we've only done takeout. Someday we will venture to the restaurant. I'm really happy that Jun has moved into the North Loop. I've always thought Minneapolis was woefully lacking good Chinese food, but that's probably because I grew up in Houston with a booming Chinatown. The food is solid and tasty. Beef chow fun - My husband and I LOVE these noodles! The beef is so tender, and the noodles are so delicious. Just the right amount of salt, and I'm not left with that greasy feeling that sometimes accompanies flat noodle dishes. Dumplings - They really are as small as people say they are. They were tasty, but I need a bit more for $8. Peking pork - The one time we ordered it, it came without the pancakes, which was a bit disappointing. The pork itself was delicious. Well-seasoned. The fried rice - Tasty. Not the best I've had, but I appreciate that there is no upcharge to add meat. Stir-fried calamari - DELICIOUS! Dan Dan noodles - I had indicated a note to make this an actual medium spicy (and not MN spicy, which I've found is not spicy at all). I don't know if they made this spicier than normal, but it hit the spot! Perfect amount of heat and the noodles (again) - perfection! Perfect for kicking my cold's butt! Hot and sour soup - this is wonderful. It's one of the only hot and sour soups that reminds me of my mom's. Perfect balance of white pepper and vinegar. And again, good for when you've got a cold! So my one beef (no pun intended) with Jun is the veggie portions in relation to the price. I'm sure they find locally sourced veggies, but $8-10 for maybe a cup of cooked vegetables is a bit steep. I know they have high North Loop rent prices to pay, but still... The Chinese broccoli - not my fave. I like it steamed or stir friend with maybe just a bit of oyster sauce on top. This has lots of soy sauce and scallions. Green beans - YUM. You don't get many of them (honestly, how much can green beans cost?), but they are damn tasty! Bok choy - I think maybe there was 3/4 cup of veggies in the $8 dish. Same comment with the Chinese broccoli - a bit oversauced. All in all, I really love this place and will even tolerate the incompetence of Door Dash in order to get Jun's food delivered. (Side note: Hey, Jun, could you switch to Bite Squad? Like some others here, I'd like to give a 3.5 rating, but I'm rounding up rather than down. Jun is in our neighborhood, and we typically go 1-2 times a month, so far only for dinner. It's a nice break from the plethora of other "New American Cuisine" restaurants that seem to open and close regularly around downtown. I'd recommend that when perusing the reviews on here, look at who wrote them, because the Asians seem to be more favorable in their ratings than others, and frankly I look for that when it comes to Asian restaurants. If you grew up on American-Chinese food, this menu is going to be a challenge to what you think of as Chinese food, and you're probably not going to it, at least not right away. They have a few more Americanized staples, like egg rolls, sesame chicken, and spare ribs, but much of it will be unfamiliar, and on the spicier side for Minnesotan palates. Szechuan food is characterized by "ma-lah" flavors, which translate as "spicy and numbing" from the ubiquitous inclusion of chili peppers and Szechuan peppercorns. The menu has changed a few times since they opened earlier in 2017, and it has been interesting to see what they are doing with the changes. A favorite of ours, and consistent item on the menu, has been the Couples Beef, which is a cold appetizer of sliced beef with ma-lah marinade. I recommend requesting a few wedges of lemon or lime to squeeze over it, because it's lacking a touch of acid. And, while it comes solo, I like to intersperse my bites with some white rice, to help cut through the spiciness. It's helpful to note that Jun lists is kung pao dishes as "gong bao," which is a little closer to the native pronunciation, but is essentially the same thing, so don't let the spelling confuse you. They also offer dim sum dishes to order. I noticed some of the other reviews made it seem that they pushed around the carts that are familiar to regular dim-summers, but we haven't seen that at dinner time. Instead they gave us an additional dim sum menu and we made our selections from there. Some items were better than others, but they offer a nice way to try new things, without having to get a large platter of an unfamiliar item. Our experience with the service has been mixed, ranging from just about right to wondering where our server went. I won't guarantee you'll love Jun, but if you go with an open mind and don't have the expectation that you're going to experience predictable flavors, you're probably going to enjoy yourself. read more

TBH I'm bummed--saw this place popping up on so many Instagram accounts and got excited because I lived in China for a year and got real nostalgic for the classics. We came for dinner on a Thursday and the place was dead. Ordered green beans and la zi chicken on happy hour special--$5 is a good deal! They both had great flavor, and while Tea House def has them beat, I enjoyed it. I felt obligated to try the dim sum because I'd heard good things and seen cute pics. However, I was disappointed in the presentation. The dim sum looked like it had just been placed in the metal steamers just for looks, and the bowls were messy (see curry octopus pic). All of the dim sum we ordered was underwhelming: octopus was chewy, rice in lotus was bland, nothing stood out as unique, and I didn't even feel like taking pics cause the presentation was sloppy. Warning: Another Happy Hour review. I came here with some co-workers for happy hour (after eyeing this place up constantly!) and I was SO pleased! The value for what you get on happy hour is amazing. I've never been to China (and also love some Americanized Chinese), but I have a friend from China who has cooked me some authentic Chinese, and I've fallen in love with the spices they use. These dishes did not disappoint! The food was fairly oily but I could taste the numbing Sichuan peppers and it made me happy. Everything we had was great and I would totally get it again. The Sichuan dumplings ($4 for 4) were small but so, so good. Get those. The cold cucumber dish was surprisingly flavorful and delicious. Get that. The Sichuan green beans were flash fried and crisp, with lots of Sichuan pepper. Get them. The La Zi Chicken was crispy and well spiced (yes people, there are lots of hot peppers. Calm down) Get it. The portion sizes were quite large for happy hour - easily a couple dishes would be a meal. JUN offers mouth-numbing szechuan, a trendy environment, creative cocktails, and intestines that actually taste good. Really. At 5:45ish on a Saturday night, our table of 3 was seated right away. We ordered dan dan noodles, sliced pork belly, cumin lamb, teng jiao fish fillets, and a pork intestines dish because YOLO. However, there were discrepancies between the descriptions on the menu, the server, and then from the owner, which was a little disappointing and awkward. That is why I don't remember the name of the intestine dish because it was described differently by each source. But the verdict... the dan dan noodles were delicious and super garlicky. The noodles seemed fresh and they weren't too oily. I loved the pork belly cold appetizer - it was cut thin and melted in my mouth! They added a lot of fresh herbs to brighten up the fat-on-fat thing they had going on. The flavor of the cumin lamb was great as well, and was not gamey at all. Very tender and bold. The fish fillets were the spiciest dish and had those authentic sichuan peppercorns. This was my first experience with them and I kinda liked the numbing burn in an intriguing and masochistic kind of way. But the pleasant surprise of the night was the pork intestines! I really enjoyed the chewy texture, and the meat itself had a mild flavor (no bitterness and anything that made you remember you were eating intestines). Great location for Szechuan food! The ambience is great. We came here for team lunch. One of my co-workers had been here a few times. It was evident when we were seated and the owners recognized him immediately, and greeted him. The service was amazing from there LOL. Our team is a big fan of Szechuan food as well so we're always looking for great places with authentic flavors. Honestly our team is pretty much a foodie team all-around but I digress. We were brought lunch menus right away but since my coworker was familiar with their family style menu and we all like to share things, he asked that the family style menu be brought out. Know that this is an option at both lunch and dinner if you have a larger group in want to take advantage of it I'd highly. Let me see if I can remember all the dishes we ordered. Cold spicy noodles, vegetarian dumplings, pork dumplings, cream cheese wontons, pork belly and brown size, Farmers chicken, green beans, and peng peng shrimp. I believe those were all of them LOL. Everything tastes amazing! The green beans were some of the best I've ever had. A great way to get anyone to eat their veggies with all the wonderful flavors. The pork belly was tender and delicious and practically melted in your mouth. I can't say enough about this place! The food is absolutely phenomenal! Overall, I'd give JUN a 3.5 but I'll round up. However, I wanted to like JUN more than I actually did. I was really excited for a Szechuan restaurant to open up in the cities because if you know me, you know that I love all things spicy. I came here for my birthday with a group of 7 people around 11:30 on a Sunday afternoon. We wanted to go early because we thought it would be busy but it wasn't so that was a pleasant surprise. Our waitress was really nice but the hostess was... awkward. We walked in and he just stared at us. I actually had to say something to him first before he sat us at a table. Luckily our experience with the waitress wasn't as weird haha. What we ordered: - Sichuan Dumplings - not spicy and no flavor. This wasn't my favorite - Cheese Wontons - DELICIOUS, this was the best part of the meal. The wrap was crispy and the cream cheese was plentiful - Ma Po Tofu - the spice was there but the flavor was not :( I was so sad because this was the dish I was looking forward to the most - Dan Dan Noodles - same as ma po tofu. However, I really enjoyed the texture. I'm not sure how to explain it but it's worth trying! - Bok Choy - good but nothing special. It's a good complement to the other dishes though - Yu Xiang Eggplants - I really enjoyed this dish! Probably could have eaten a whole plate of this myself - Spicy Beef Hot Pot - definitely was not what I was expecting when we ordered this. When I think hot pot, I think soup-y with tender meat. Nope. No soup whatsoever but at least the meat was tender - JUN's Pork Spare Ribs (dry rub) - this wasn't bad, it was crispy but too dry Overall, it was a fairly enjoyable experience. I just wished there was more flavor to the dishes and that it was spicier. I'd say it's "Minnesota-spicy." It's also over-priced compared to other Szechuan restaurants. I wanted to give Jun's Dim Sum a try since I love dim sum and because not very many places in the twin cities carry Xiao Long Bao (soup dumpling's). I've heard mixed reviews about their soup dumplings but I still had to try it for myself. I am really quite sad to report that I was really disappointed. What we got were just dumplings with absolutely no soup inside. Ok, maybe a drip of sauce. The filling was flavorful, yeah, but definitely not worth $12. We also ordered the shrimp dumplings, beef tripe with ginger, and pork belly with brown sauce. Shrimp dumplings were good and flavorful. I'm so used to dipping my shrimp dumplings into some type of spicy sauce that I was a little sad they didn't have anything. The beef tripe w/ ginger was surprisingly good and one of the cleanest tasting beef tripe w/ ginger we've ever had. The sauce wasn't thick like most other dim sum places and the taste was light. Some may think it lacks flavor but I liked it the way it was. The pork belly with brown sauce, the pork belly was sooo tender. The brown sauce had this really light savory taste that wasn't too much and wasn't sticky. I thought it might be more on the sticky side but it wasn't. Parking is all street parking so it can be a bit hard to find a spot. There's plenty of metered parking but you could also end up parking pretty far. The service was great. I personally would not recommend this place for dim sum but everyone has different expectations so do go and give them a try. read more

I had heard good things about this place. We went on a saturday at 11am, when they first opened. The building is kind of funky, but didn't have that authentic dim sum feel to it. The waiter was really nice, and was super easy to talk to. Some of our party had a gluten intolerance, and he was able to talk to the kitchen to accommodate that, which was great. There wasn't soy sauce or a bowl of chili/garlic sitting on the table like most dim sum places, which was kind of disappointing. Ok, let's get to the good stuff now: 1) GF Chicken Wings - These wings were so delicious. The crunch was nice, the scallions were a great touch. It was seasoned perfectly. I would get these again for sure. 2) Bun Bao (Veggie) - The bun itself was good, very fluffy and moist. The filling was mushrooms and carrots. It just seemed like someone forgot to insert the other half of the filling. It was definitely missing a few elements. I would have liked to see cabbage or chinese broccoli. Something to complete the dish, and have it tied together. 3) Shrimp dumplings - Pretty standard shrimp dumplings, nothing to really report about. 4) Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll - This is usually one of my favorites, it was served with the sauce on the side for the GF people, which was fine. It also had 2 chinese broccolis on the side, which were really good. The shrimp roll itself - I plunged the noodles in the sauce bowl so it had plenty of sauce, these too were missing an element. They weren't bad, but they weren't good. I think the sauce just needed more flavor. 5) Meatballs - These were kind of fun, they had a hint of orange to it. They were pretty decent, and came with 3 in a dish. I had half of a meatball, and that's all I really needed from that dish. Just enough to taste, but it didn't leave me feeling like I needed to eat the other half. 6) Curry Octopus - I was super excited about this dish. It was a little limey, which was a surprise. All in all, it wasn't a bad dish. I'm glad I tried it. I think had the dish been called something other than curry, I wouldn't have much to complain about, but I was really looking for that curry flavor and it just wasn't there. But the dish itself, was good - just don't go into it expecting a huge curry flavor. 7) Fried Taro Balls - I would not get these again. They were overly greasy, and they were super bland. I tried to dip it in a sauce, and they were still bland. Not great at all. 8) Turnip Cakes - Hmmm, these were super mushy. Almost like they weren't done completely. It was so hard for me to tell what the flavor was like because the consistency of the cakes were like custard once you tried to pick up a piece. I felt like this meal just did not hit the spot, and it was on the pricey end. The quality did not match the price. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was so-so. Now I will have to see what some of their other competitors have to offer before I circle back around again. I would, however, get those wings again. They were pretty awesome. read more
