This is our go to for great Chinese food (we had it delivered via Grubhub this time, free delivery, thanks to Amazon Prime). The food came piping hot and consisted of Cream Cheese Wontons done right. Crispy, not soggy, and actually had real prepared hot mustard, not the stuff in a packet. Not greasy at all. The wife got the garlic chicken, extra spicy. The chicken was spicy hot, and the veggies crisp. Just be aware that there are thinly sliced wood ear mushrooms (for those that don't like fungus). Tasty! I got the Prawns in Garlic Sauce, extra extra spicy. It was a mirror of the chicken dish, but came with a lot of perfectly cooked plump shrimp. Like I mentioned earlier it was very hot temperature wise, and the burn to my upper palate was worth it when I dipped into it. The portion size is excellent, with enough food per container for at least two meals per entree. The prepared mustard was excellent as well, and cleaned out the sinuses. For those of you that don't like the sinus clearing mustard, mix a little with the sweet and sour sauce. It adds a nice tang when dipping. This was a great meal to celebrate the beginning of spring break! My wife was happy as well (she's a 2nd grade teacher) and was a bit hangry when she came home. As for me? I'm retired. Almost everything here is fabulous. Best sesame beef in the world! Shrimp toast also deserves a special shout out. I've eaten over half the menu so far and only once did I not like a dish. Ordered takeout. We ordered Mongolian beef, noodles with beef, chicken fried rice, egg rolls and dumplings. Food arrived hot, lots of condiments and portions were generous. I love this place. Im from out of town and always come here when I visit family to get the lomein. Probably for the last 15 years or so. This is the only place I can find that has the thinner noodles. Always consistent and fresh. A good amount of food too that lasts me a few meals. Many Chinese Restaurants overcook some of the vegetables in their dishes, but not here. My Pea pods were crisp and flavorful. My Barbequed Pork with Snow peas was fabulous. Once upon a time this place was a gem. That was 6 years ago. I had this over the weekend and it has fallen far from its glory days. The food was so bad I had to throw it away. The meat, specifically the beef, had the constancy of chewy tofu... it didn't taste like beef, it tasted like they were catching rats running around their kitchen to save money. Shameful. Great Wall Chinese is in my top 10 Asian restaurants in the twin cities but the prices have clearly gone up over the last several years. Located near 44th and France in Edina is probably one of the reasons but I'm a sucker for their Sesame Chicken and Chow Fun. It's also one of the few options open on Christmas Day, which has become tradition for my brother and I to see a movie and get Chinese food. On Christmas Day, service was bountiful and like other Chinese restaurants, Great Wall has a large menu with a lot of variety. Not sure I'd say it's the most authentic Chinese restaurant in the metro, but it's also trying to appeal to a different crowd in Edina. If you're looking for decent/good Chinese food at a slight premium, this is a good option. There's a free parking lot which can get full with all of the other businesses in this little strip mall, but there's also plenty of on street parking (for free) - just a little busy on France Avenue or park on the side streets and walk a block. read more

When two longtime Chinese restaurants closed in SW Mpls., I ventured further west to give Great Wall a try and man am I glad. I've discovered one of my new favorite restaurants of any style. After falling for their chow mein over classic, crispy noodles, I've been making my way through the specials and other standards for the last few months. All the entrees are fresh and flavorful. Their spacious dining rooms are a pleasure to visit, and the generous portions last for one or two takeaways. Hunan Triple Crown, chop suey, kung pao and chicken with garlic sauce are my current faves. I visit when my favorite server Gracy is there on Saturdays and Wednesday evening. Service with a smile and she's made some winning suggestions I wouldn't have known. Other Chinese places have come and gone, but it's obvious why Great Wall has endured for half a century. read more

I was initially impressed by how much tofu I got, and then realized there were fewer than 10 veggies total in the whole thing. And again, so bland as to be like eating nothing. Very disappointed. $56 bought very little food in comparison to how much we get at our other takeout fav Chinese restaurants. Here's what we got: -Small Drop Egg soup: so bad we threw it away. Inedible. -Cream Cheesee puffs with an amount of cream cheese smaller than a marble. Tasted weird. -Vegetarian Spring Rolls were decent, but small - Lemon Chicken was basic, but all white meat which is a good thing -Vegetarian Lomein? Can't say because they gave us Chicken Lomein in error. The Vegetarians I ordered it for couldn't eat it, so they ordered Chipotle. I tried it and thought it very blah. -Oh and one super small little box of white rice.... like small for one person. I ordered for 3 people. Should have been double size at least for the items I ordered. That would cost 50 cents more, rice is cheap. Nordstrom prices for Walmart quality. Very big price for very little food. I had a craving for some good greasy chinese so I ordered from Great Wall. I ordered the sweet and sour pork and the dumplings. I was really bummed to find that the sweet and sour pork was actually chicken (don't get me wrong I love chicken but in sweet and sour, I prefer pork). the flavor was too bland on the chicken and the sauce was too sweet so it was a meh at best dish. The dumplings were quite disappointing as well. The dumpling was too thick and once again it was in need of more flavor. A more appropriate name for this establishment would be the Average Wall Chinese Restaurant. Based on the reviews we came in expecting a LOT of flavor. WOW, we were provided the complete opposite. I get it though... this is an American Chinese restaurant, not a Chinese restaurant. They should own that in their marketing. Our table of four tried seafood, vegetarian and meat dishes, as well as some apps. The menu shows pepper symbols to imply hot dishes and let me tell you right now you can just disregard those hot pepper symbols entirely. None of the dishes we were served had any heat or noticeable seasoning. We tried some steamed dumplings and when they were passed around the table we all had a frown on our faces. Super bready / doughy and not what you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant. Following up the "schezwan" wings were sickly sweet with zero heat. You get the picture. I sat down for lunch and was handed a menu Then tried to order and was told I could not order a pint of what I wanted....that I had to order a quart if I was dining in. Pints are only for takeout I was traveling, and on a bike, so no easy way to deal with leftovers. Seems crazy to force me to order more food than I want I ordered takeout and ate in the park a few blocks away Server was a bit rude about the whole thing...like I should have known better or something. I am not from the area; maybe this is common. No lunch menu either with smaller portions and a side of fried rice. Just large portions. My husband and I have been ordering from Great Wall for the last few years, especially during COVID. We always felt the food was great and prices reasonable for the large portion sizes. However during COVID and currently, the portions have decreased by at least 1/2 but the prices remain the same. Last Friday, my husband and I ordered General Tso's chicken, chicken chop suey and pork fried rice. The meals came with 16 oz of white rice. The total was about $46. He told the staff to add a $4.00 tip because we picked up the order. They did not provide a receipt and unfortunately he didn't ask for one. There must have been a communication problem because he found out Great Wall had charged his Credit card $56.00. We're not going to challenge this given the current state of affairs of the restaurant industry. General Tso's chicken - My husband thought the chicken was a little overcooked and dry. The dish was supposed to have broccoli, mushrooms and baby corn. There were 2 small pieces of broccoli, a lot of carrots and baby corn. He was very disappointed because he doesn't like carrots or baby corn but loves broccoli. Chop suey and pork fried rice - I loved the chop suey and the fried rice but was disappointed in the portion of rice. We've been going to the Great Wall for more than 30 years. The service has always been great, and still is. It used to be the place to get consistently good Chinese food and at reasonable prices. Not anymore. During recent dine-ins several of us began to notice price increases as well as having our longtime favorites not taste the same. Our most recent experience was a take-out order for 5 that included Sesame Noodles, Hot and Sour Soup, and 4 entrees. The Mu Shu Pork sauce was so runny that it formed a soup-like puddle at the bottom of the pancake, which made it impossible to eat with hands. The Sesame Noodles, which used to be thick round noodles, now consist of the kind of noodles one finds in dried ramen packages at 3 for 25¢, and sauce, what little there was, tasted more like peanut butter than ground sesame paste. And there were no scallions or sliced cucumbers. The steamed pork filled buns were wanton-sized tidbits with a reddish-colored meat inside. They were not the Shu Mai that we had expectedThe other dishes were equally mediocre. While the portions are ample, $14- $16 for traditional Great Wall dishes, such as Mandarin Beef, is steep. We're talking mostly vegetables here. We are truly disappointed and will wait for someone else to tell us the Great Wall has gotten better before we return. read more

NO flavor...meat is like rubber in all their dishes...and to boot, the service is very, mmm, sterile. Get your food, pay, walk out. No 'hello', 'thanks' or any semblance of trying to connect with the customer. I finally am writing this after three tries, HOPING, yes hoping/praying we just had a "one off bad experience..." Came here armed with the 35th anniversary $2 off lunch buffet coupon. The lunch buffet was a slight disappointment. The selection is minimal and lacks diversity. Items include egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken, thin noodle style veggie lo mien, white and fried rice, black pepper chicken, wings and sesame chicken. The only item I could get into was the sesame chicken which still had a unusual fatty texture. The egg roll was not crispy and the wings looked appetizing but had a strange lemon chemical taste. The portion compared to chicken was small. Felt shorted on the rice. The cream cheese wonton had very little cream cheese in them compared to what I am use to. I would not order them again. Egg roll was above average. Overall I think the price is high for what I ordered. I live in west Edina and frequently order from a Hopkins location.
