    3rd course of tasting menu
    Denise H.

Being a huge Top Chef fan, I seek out former contestants restaurants. Metting girlfriends in Houston, I had to try JUN. The parking was limited, so heads up if you haven't been. At the host stand, Paul was actually there! He must have seen my fan girly eyes get big because he immediately looked away and down at the stand... awkward.... thankfully my fan girl immediately recognized the red flags and shut down my enthusiasm (although I'm pretty sure he already heard me tell my friend "that's him" ) . The host standing beside him was very friendly and showed us to our seats. The wait staff was very efficient with the perfect amount of "checking in" and sparkling water refills. My gal pal and I went for the tasting menu: 1st course - aquechile, 5*! My favorite dish of the night. So refreshing and even though it was dark in the restaurant, the phone captured the vibrant green sauce. Delicious! 2nd course - headcheese, 3.5* Interesting dish, very unique. 3rd course - Tamal, 3*. It was ok, nothing outstanding in terms of flavor, but not my least favorite dish. 4th course - lap cheong and beans, 4*. Wonderful savory flavor and a generous portion. Beans were perfect. 5th course - carrots, 2.5*, not quite a solid 3 mainly because they were bland. Pretty to look at but unmemorable...not bad, just not anything. We didn't understand this dish. 6th course - brisket curry, 4.5* This was my 2nd favorite bite (my gal pals #1). That sauce was slap ya mama good! So satisfying. 7th course - dessert trio, 4*. A great set of bites and all different but work well together. We appreciate the waiter giving us a direction of what to eat 1st, 2nd, 3rd. I will definitely be back to try the fried chicken!

Jun had been on our list to try for a while, and we finally came by for dinner on a Saturday after making a reservation. The boho vibed interior was cozy and welcoming. As soon as you walk through the door, you're greeted with the a mix of relaxing incense and the aroma of food. Service was attentive through the night. Highlights for us were the oysters (4.5/5), wagyu tartare (4.5/5), lamb belly (4.5/5), and corn (4/5). The carrot (3.5/5) and fried chicken (3.5/5) were solid as well. The green curry (2.5/5) and broccolini (2/5) were both a little undercooked and lacked flavor for my liking. The cocktails were a standout for me, beautifully presented and tasted delicious. This is definitely a nice date night spot with strong presentation and solid flavors. I'd recommend go family style to explore more of the menu.

Delicious food, lovely ambiance, and great service. No complaints. My favorite dishes were the gulf shrimp, mussels, and the broccolini but everything was good. For dessert, I really enjoyed the tapioca pudding. Will definitely be back. The only downside was the parking - lot is small so had to find neighborhood parking.

Enjoyed most of the food served here; it's a very nice blend of presentation, flavor profiles, and execution. Plenty of parking available, which is always nice for a nicer dinner service inside the loop. The interior ambiance is very modern and cozy without being too dark like some other spots. Cocktails are very good looking and tastes great. Oysters (4/5), Wagyu tartare (4.5/5), broccolini (1.5/5, a bit undercooked and the bok choy was a bit sloppy), local corn (3.5/5), lamb belly (4/5), carrots (4/5), green curry (3/5), fried chicken (3.5/5). Portions are fairly small but most of the dishes were solid. The best thing we had were the Wagyu tartare and oysters. Overall a decent date spot!

This was our second time at Jūn and it's even better than before. We came back for the passionfruit panna cotta with the sesame cookie crumble, but we left with new favorites. The beef tartare was briny and luscious and had a nice balanced kick. The lamb belly was crispy and so tender. It reminded me of Texas barbecue. The rice cakes were like Mac and cheese in the best possible way. Oh and our server was delightful and attentive. I love sitting at the counter because it makes conversation and sharing so easy. What a great anniversary!

I had the opportunity to try Jūn during their dinner service on a Wednesday night. It wasn't very busy, but we made reservations anyway. Parking gets full because it also shares a lot with a Pilates studio - Happy Hour Pilates. The entrance to Jūn seemed a bit inconspicuous to me. It's a carved, wooden door. Push or pull to open? I couldn't tell you. Haha. The ambiance was cute and earthy. It was dimly lit. The vibe reminded me a little bit of Tatemo but with more decor. If you've ever been to Suerte in Austin, it kind of feels like that but in a smaller scale. I like the feeding utensil holders like some Michelin restaurants offer. As far as drinks, I had one of their Zero proof cocktails, Tamarind Arnold Palmer. It was delicious and refreshing like a lemon iced tea. I could've had a pitcher of that! They don't offer zero proof alternative brands like Ritual and Seedlip, but it was still good. Maybe eventually they'll offer it. My friend ordered the Gulf shrimp aguachile with avocado, taro, shrimp oil and loved it. She also had the red fish with guajillo and pickled melon. She wasn't as big a fan of that. I tried a bite and thought it was very fishy compared to other red fish I've had and a tad dry. The pickled melon had a funky taste. She also ordered the rice cakes which has with mushrooms, yellow bean bechamel, and spiced panko. We were told that it was like mac and cheese. Honestly, it was nothing like that. The bechamel sauce was good, but the rice cakes were dense and chewy like mochi. It's supposed to be that way, so if you're into that texture, you'll like it. If you don't like mushrooms, you can pick them out. I had the local corn with burnt ends xo, scallion, and spicy aioli. I very much enjoyed the flavors and take on street corn. For my main, I also had the tandoori marinated lamb belly topped with pickled green tomatoes and had a ring of salted yogurt around it. I've never had lamb belly before, but I am a fan of pork and beef belly, so I wanted to try. I thought it was perfectly tender. The pickled green tomatoes and yogurt help cut through the richness. I wish there were potatoes on the menu to eat it with that weren't salt and vinegar flavored because that's the same flavor profile as the pickled green tomatoes and salted yogurt. For dessert, we each ordered the goat cheesecake with black peppercorn, ginger lychee sorbet, honeycomb candy, and macerated berries. It was good, but either the spice from the black peppercorn or ginger lychee overpowered the cheesecake flavor. Ginger can get spicy. It was so strong that I felt like my sinuses were being cleansed. A little too medicinal for me. I want to try this place during the day when it's their coffee shop, Third Place. I would rate Jūn 3.5 stars and round up to 4. It was so cool to see Chef Henry Lu and Chef Evelyn Garcia in close proximity at the recent Culturemap Tastemaker Awards. I was totally fangirling, but I didn't approach cause I hate to disturb. I also saw Chef Christine Ha. Can you tell I love watching cooking competition shows?! Lol.

My fiance and I brought our mothers here to try the tasting menu for an early Mother's Day celebration. I was really excited to eat here, but ultimately my experience did not live up to the restaurant's reputation. The first two courses on the tasting menu were fantastic (highly recommend the gulf shrimp aguachile and fried head cheese), but every other dish afterwards either lacked textural variety or well rounded flavor. The tamale course was overly soft to the point of mushiness, the carrots course was overwhelmingly spicy for our whole table, and we all agreed that most of the other courses were too salty. Service was friendly, but the courses were rolled out with VERY inconsistent timings (ranging anywhere between 5 minutes to over 25 minutes of waiting in between finishing one course and receiving the next). Our waiter also forgot to bring us our boxed leftovers even after I had reminded him for it while paying for the check. The experience was somewhat worthwhile but I left the restaurant wishing I could have treated our mothers to a smoother experience. - Ambiance: 4/5 - Food: 2/5 - Service: 3/5

Great service! The staff is kind, quick, and provide a personalized feel to dinner. The space is intimate and warm perfect for smaller groups and dates. The cocktails are well curated and complex. When it comes to the food you can tell there is a lot of intentionality. The preset menu didn't appeal to us, so we ordered Al a carte. The gulf shrimp ceviche, oysters in beef tallow, and tteokboki/rice cakes were my favorites. I did not have a lot of love for the lamb shoulder and brisket. I love the concept of Houston representation coming through all the dishes, but something about the combinations didn't resignate for me in taste value. Still an overall beautiful experience.

Jun fried chicken. Good, nice, crunchy crust. Sous vide, so incredibly tender. But, it can also turn the chicken's protein structure into mush, if left too long in the sous vide station; you can squeeze it like Pla-Doh. Not that there's anything wrong with sous vide. Or this cooking technique. Some would call it "melt in your mouth" tender. Others might say "excellent for people with no teeth". Just an observation, not a complaint. Each person must decide for themself if they like that kind of texture. It's the same effect as a long marinade, which is why the interior of a Chik Fil A chicken breast is so homogeneous. I learned about structural changes with marinade or sous vide in a Kenji Lopez-Alt article, years ago. For those who don't know me, I've been writing about fried chicken recipes for years and also documenting the central Texas German Czech community parish picnics on my The Fried Chicken Blog. So I really enjoy researching and talking about fried chicken. Be sure to bring cash so as not to have to pay the up-charges that may show up on your bill. (I can't remember if they mention these on the menu or not.) Here is what Kenji wrote about that homogenization of the chicken meat a few years back when working on a Chik Fil A copycat recipe. (Not that I would ever patronize that establishment lol): https://www.seriouseats.com/homemade-chick-fil-a-sandwiches-recipe

Don't understand how you could give this place a bad review. It's phenomenal. We came for happy hour on a Saturday. Sat at the bar, I loved the bar! Super comfy and staff are friendly. Personally main dinning space looked dark so bar was ideal. We tried 4 different types of specialty cocktails, if you come at happy hour they are $3 off. These are craft cocktails, extremely extremely delicious. My favorites were the cocktail with beet and the cocktail with coconut and turmeric. Food was fantastic!! I loved how they served it in waves and not all at the same time. It felt more like a culinary experience. We had the cucumber salad which is a must. Followed by corn, which is good and totally unlike anything I've ever had before. Then the red fish which was sooooo good. Then the pork shoulder with coconut rice and together that was to die for. Plus the salt and vinegar potato's which I'd gladly have as a snack anytime. So so good!! Would come back honestly every week if I could!

Jun was very cozy and romantic. You get to sit at the bar or at the counter and watch the open kitchen. The waiter recommended ordering 4-7 dishes but we ordered 3 and were really full. We ordered the oysters, chicken, and brisket curry. Oysters were rich with beef tallow and had a kick of spice. Chicken was fried well but was a tad expensive (1 thigh and breast for $24). My favorite was the brisket with the celery root puree. It was super yummy with the coconut rice but just wished there was more curry! Small parking lot outside which is rare for the Heights.

Jun was the perfect place to celebrate my husband's birthday dinner. First off, there's a parking lot out front, which is lucky for the Heights area. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, and even took photos for us. He recommended we ordered several dishes from each category of the menu so we ordered the following: - Local Corn: really loved the XO sauce it was in - Lamb Belly: honestly wasn't a fan of the lamb with salted yogurt, but hubby loved it - Rice Cake: absolutely loved the soft/crispy contrasting textures here! These were upgraded tteokbokki. - Pork Ribs: loved the five spice sauce and how tender these were - Fried Chicken: so crispy and loved the pairing of the honey For drinks we had the Scarlet Letter, a beautiful and refreshing tiki-style cocktail, and the Miles Away mocktail. Honestly the Miles Away mocktail was the best mocktail I've ever had. We both loved the how strong the passion fruit flavor was. They also brought out a cake to help celebrate hubby's birthday and it was sweetest touch at the end. The ambiance of the restaurant has that overall classy casual vibe, and we'll definitely be back! Pro Tip: if you're pregnant, they have one of the largest mocktail menus in town!

After hearing about JUN for many years, I'm so glad I finally got to try it with three good friends on a recent trip to Houston! We were celebrating 3 of the 4 attendees' birthdays (mine included!) and we were treated so well the whole night! The kitchen was also great about allergies, as two of my friends have shellfish allergies and one is also celiac. We began the evening with some cocktails and mocktails which were all delicious, and then leapt right into the menu items we ordered. Some of my favorite bites of the night came at the beginning: the beef tartare was so balanced and delicious, and the shrimp aguachile was punchy yet light. Would definitely reorder both those dishes! The hot appetizers came up next: my favorite of the bunch was the cabbage, which was super flavorful from the tofu caesar sauce and had just the right amount of char, but the shishitos and carrots were also excellent. All the mains and sides we ordered were amazing; the brisket was a bit dry for me but the peanut sauce it came in was phenomenal. And the green curry went so well with the aromatic coconut rice! I didn't try the potatoes but my friends loved them a lot. Then our server brought out three cute little scoops of sorbet for the birthday trio. Perfect palate cleanser, and not wanting to leave our fourth companion out, Chef Henry sent her a complementary sorbet as well :) Such a nice touch. By this point we were all super stuffed but the desserts on the menu looked too tasty, so we also added on the passionfruit panna cotta with coconut tapioca and the goat cheesecake with lychee ginger sorbet. Our gluten free friend really enjoyed the vanilla bean ice cream, but the rest of us loved both the other desserts we got. Totally worth it! Since the menu is so seasonal and changes frequently, I would love to come back the next time I'm in the city and try more things. In the meantime, I'll keep dreaming about this meal :) Thanks for a phenomenal birthday dinner, JUN!

Anyone who knows me understands I tend to avoid the corporate or heavy investor funded bars. I will…read morereluctantly go to them with friends, but I prefer local joints that I can support. The types of places that combine the atmosphere I'm looking for: 1) has a good selection of beer, preferably local brewers; 2) some wine or craft cocktails for different preferences; 3) has a food menu, permits outside food, or brings in food trucks/pop-ups; 4) a laid back vibe that welcomes families and doesn't have the air of pretentiousness; and lastly; 5) a patio for the small windows of nice weather we have in Houston, or just anytime we want to bring along our four legged friends. I've rarely ran across an outdoor patio that doesn't permit pets and if they do restrict them, it's not worth my business. To that end, this spot ticks a lot of boxes. For those who aren't into the Houston F&B scene as much, Robin Berwick is the creative mind behind this spot. If you've ever visited a caffeine themed coffee and bar in the midtown area, you've been to another long standing establishment of hers. When Berwick's opened roughly over a year ago, I knew this would be a spot I'd enjoy. This spot tows the line well, it's not a dive bar, it's not pretentious, and it has the neighborhood bar feel that welcomes those looking for a great cocktail, a simple beer, or just some good vibes with family, friends, or kids. It feels like if a laid back tiki bar combined with a rustic feel. Living nearby, I think it fits the area. Food & Drink - 4.5* They have burgers, wings, friends, salads. All the food is good and I definitely recommend grabbing a bite during your visit. I particularly like their burgers and always grab a cocktail to go along with it. Service - 4* I've had mixed results, sometimes the attention to detail and service times are really good. Others they can be a little long or the sense their focus is elsewhere. Cost - 4* They used to have solid specials but they have dropped off over time. As an example, there used to be BOGO burgers on Wednesdays from 4-9 pm. Then it was 50% off. That's now only 25% off on Wednesday and only from 4-7 pm. They also had half price margaritas and frozen las brujas. This is now 25% off. Tuesday's was half price French 75s and Sazeracs. That's now 25% off. Thursday's used to be BOGO wings, $3 pacificos, and half price daiquiris. That is also now just 25% off wings, daiquiris, and cabana crushes. Fridays is industry night. They offered 25% off the entire food menu from 10 pm-12 am, now it's only 11 pm-12 am and only for the sandwich. Look, I worked in the industry, I know it's tough. I get that it's really tough for bars in Houston to make the margins work when the burdens seem to continue to rise. Landlords particularly are brutal /rant. It's even tougher when a bar is just getting their feet under them. This neighborhood has seen a lot of great additions in the last couple of years and the specials had us visiting more often, particularly when they ran til 9 pm. We now can't make it as often with the cutoff at 7 pm. Ultimately we were spending more time and money during the past visits, but I'm sure the overall margins were thinner for them. Possibly even some loss leaders to get traffic and business in the door. Now that the specials and times have tightened we elected to diversify to other bars nearby. Ultimately, they're all local and have the vibes I look for. Overall - 4.25* I highly encourage everyone to give this spot a visit if you're nearby. It's a great spot with good drinks and friendly neighborhood vibes. I do wish they would make some further adjustments to certain things that I thought differentiated them from others, the 4-9 pm specials was particularly strong as it allowed for the chance to visit more often when many folks can't make it by 7 pm. At least it isn't as bad as some bars, that I won't name that have basically limited their offering to a 1-1.5 hour happy hour (though it is half price) that runs so early that it's shocking how anyone could visit during that small window.

The bread was very buttery and nicely toasted. The frank itself was very juicy and I loved how the pico and mustard help cut through the fat. The thing that made this hotdog stand out was the cheese sauce. The cheese sauce was delicious and I could probably have just eaten that alone. One thing though, the hotdogs were a bit on the smaller size, you probably would have to order something else or a second hotdog if you were hungry. Would come back again just for this hotdog! It's located right at 19th St. and Shepherd near the light. There's a small angled parking lot that can be tight when people park along the fence. In this era, most places have mocktail options with brand alternatives like Ritual, Seedlip and Lyre's or at the least, something with juice, Topo Chico and simple syrup. The female bartender made me a NA margarita which was great. I liked that she didn't make it too sweet or too tart which happens with mocktails that don't have alternatives and are mostly juice or lemon. On the other hand, when I ordered a second, the guy bartender made it too sweet. I didn't like his version. For the alcoholic versions, they seem to have good cocktails, wine, beer and flights. They also have daily specials. Aside from the steak night, they don't serve food here. It wouldn't be my first choice of bars in this area.

It's worth a stop for their $1 Tiny Tini's. I tried all three flavors; the Espresso martini, lemon…read moredrop, and Cosmo- and for just a buck, each 2 ounce sip packed with plenty of flavor. I also enjoyed a sweet frozen cocktail topped with a fresh mint leaf that was perfect for a warm afternoon. Fun drinks, great value, and a unique experience. They have a food truck outside that serves food, from what we were informed. Thank you Tre for inviting me here. They did not have any food menus for the truck at the time of my visit. Happy hour start at 2pm, and the $1 Tiny Tini's start at 6pm.

We were able to snag some free street parking and wandered our way into a cute setup with mood lighting and plenty of seating. There's a central bar and plenty of outdoor patio space. We were immediately helped as soon as we found a table which I really appreciated. The menu is HUGE and has anything you could possibly want. We're big red wine fans so we settled on that page. J opted for a cab while I decided on a couple to sample before ultimately choosing a red blend. I appreciate that they're more than happy to give you a taste before committing to a glass. You can choose between 3 or 6oz pours, or a bottle. We also decided to share a cheese board with the Willoughby cheese which was soft and delicious! I appreciated how kind and accommodating the servers were as they frequently checked on us. This is a great spot to enjoy some wine with friends, on date night, or anything really! It has a relaxed atmosphere and is a pleasure to visit. Till next time!

We came in as an impromptu visit after an earlier event and figured we'd just stop in for a glass of wine or so. Upon walking in, the place is super cute with dim lighting and was quite crowded on a Thursday night. We didn't immediately find available seating, but after a couple minutes, a table opened up and we sat there. Our primary server was Grayson, who was super knowledgeable about the wine list. Other servers tended to us throughout the night, and all were equally as knowledgeable about the menu offerings. At the time we went, they were featuring various wines from Beaujolais. We ended up trying one of these, the Alexandre Burgaud Brouilly Rouge, which was a full-bodied red. This was a great recommendation, and I will say that we didn't conclude the visit on only one of these bottles... Based on Grayson's food recommendations, we ended up ordering the Mortadella panini and a combination charcuterie board. The Mortadella panini was unique but good - tomato, mortadella, provolone, and mustard all served on a pretzel bun. Probably not my dish of choice alongside wine, however I did really like the charcuterie board. We asked them to surprise us on the cheese and meat, and they really came through. The prosciutto was tasty and the cheese (can't remember which one) had a peppery flavor to it, which paired well with our red wine. The overall clientele vibe seemed like a range of date nights, girls nights, first dates, and solo drinkers. I love the diversity! We ended up making friends with the table next to us and eventually merged tables to make this a fun group date night. Definitely a highlight of the visit. We will definitely be back sooner than later. This is a cute neighborhood bar that I look forward to returning myself and brining out-of-town guests to come experience. They also have a dog-friendly patio - something to keep in mind whenever the day calls for drinking some wine in nice outdoor weather!

The décor, wine list, menu, comfortable seating, and cozy atmosphere make it such a special spot. They offer wines for every taste and budget, and the staff is knowledgeable when asked for recommendations. That's why this is difficult for me to write. Despite visiting frequently, I've consistently found the customer service to be unwelcoming. The service has a strange tone, and it isn't limited to one employee they all seem to share the same indifferent, slightly annoyed demeanor. The experience feels less like genuine hospitality and more like, "You're here what can I get you?" On my most recent visit, others in my group noticed and commented on the same thing without any prompting from me. Since they had never been before, it confirmed that it wasn't just my perception. One small interaction captured the overall tone. We asked whether they happened to have a birthday candle, and an employee responded in an annoyed tone by pointing to the candle on our table which, realistically, no one would put on a birthday dessert. We completely understood that they might not have one; it wasn't an unreasonable expectation or request. A simple, friendly response like, "Unfortunately, we don't, but we do have some delicious desserts," would have been perfectly fine. It wasn't the answer that bothered us. it was the way we were made to feel for asking. It may seem like a small interaction, but great hospitality is built on small moments. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and inviting, but unfortunately, the service doesn't reflect that same feeling. People return to places where they feel welcomed and appreciated, especially in a city like Houston with so many wonderful food and wine options. I genuinely want The Library to thrive because it has everything else it needs to remain a true neighborhood favorite.

When my friend made the reservation, she received an email encouraging customers to visit the tasting room before or after dinner. We showed up an hour early to visit the tasting room, however the host had no idea what we were talking about. Turns out they weren't doing tastings. Luckily, we didn't have to wait to be seated. We initially had a table that was not near a heat lamp, however an employee came over and let us know that we could switch to a table near the heat lamp which was appreciated because it was chilly. Our server was Laura. She was nice and funny. They had $25 flight specials. I went with the Sayanara Flight which had white wines. I really enjoyed them and they weren't too sweet. My friend had an NA wine which she enjoyed. We ordered the Truffle Fries and Meatballs. Both dishes were tasty. I enjoyed the aioli that came with the fries. They had discounted wines for purchase. Not all bottles were 50% off, however the gentleman that we spoke to went ahead and gave me a 50% discount on both the rosé and pinot grigio that I purchased which was so appreciated! It seems like there are quite a few businesses around town that are closing. I'm sad to see Mutiny go, but I'm glad my friend and I got to dine in on their final night.

"Closing time, you don't have to go home But you can't stay…read morehere." - Semisonic I have lived in the loop for 5 years now, and I'm sad to say that I finally tried Mutiny on their last day. I often pass by it going through a shortcut to I-45 and sometimes going home around the area. It's literally a 5-minute drive. I booked reservations Friday since I saw they opened up the 31st on Resy. It wasn't earlier in the week, but I knew it was the last day, and my friend and I really wanted to try. I'm glad we made reservations because they were at capacity (150 person capacity) and weren't taking any walk ins. We got there early cause Resy suggested checking out the Tasting Room before or after the reservation time. We got there about an hour earlier, and the host said he didn't know anything about that except that the Tasting Room area was used for events. Interesting. We were seated earlier on the patio on this freezing evening. At first, we were at a table that didn't have a heat lamp, but when one freed up, they were so nice to suggest that we move closer to the heat lamp since they saw us shivering. Lol. We were thankful for that. I wore fleece lined jeans and brought gloves and a beanie anyway having been in the below freezing winter in London. Laura was our server and was kind and funny. So was this other guy who checked in every now and then. He made light of their last day situation. The dining area is so beautiful inside. I love the limestone-looking interior and chandeliers. Reminds me of Fredericksburg or something. They had many large groups and a few small groups of friends or couples dining on this last day. Way to go out with a bang. A lot of the wines were selling out or already sold out around 7-8 pm. We tried the truffle fries and Sicilian meatballs with focaccia bread. I like the thick cut of the fries and the black garlic aioli. It reminded me of yuca fries. The Sicilian meatballs were a bit small, peppery and salty. I wish the marinara was a little more tart. The focaccia helped cut through the saltiness. I had 2 glasses of the NA Sauvignon blanc which was light and a little tart. They ran out of the NA red blend. My friend ordered Sayonara, one of their farewell flights which were aptly named for "goodbye". It was a great night on the patio but chilly. My friend purchased a rosé and a Pinot Grigio as part of their Last Sail wines. Actually, the Pinot Grigio wasn't part of the sale, and he was going to take off 20%, but he also made it 50% off. So nice!! I'm glad we got to try them on their last day. Bon voyage, Mutiny.
