Probably the Worst Service I've Received Since Jim Cow After studying two hours for the bar exam at Peet's, I decided to try this place out. I went in prepared to pay money and asked the young lady behind the counter if there was a to-go menu. She gladly handed me one. Ten seconds after sitting down at the nearest empty table to peruse the menu, another young lady comes out and says, "Sir, please sit over here," pointing to the empty three chairs at the entrance. Her tone was akin to when someone assumes you're just there to use the restroom. After deciding what I wanted, I walked back to the counter, which was now being worked by the snooty lady. She said, "Can I help you?" in that fake tone meant to imply she was surprised that I would think myself worthy of this superior establishment. Emotional intelligence is the ability to read the subtext behind the pretext. All but writers, artists and advertisers tend to poo-poo because doing so gives them permission to play dumb and pretend there's a million ways to interpret what someone has said. Fools think that as long their words technically conform to good manners, they can pack those words with condescending tones. I don't play that. This place needs to check itself before it wrecks itself and finds itself out of business. read more

I didn't even know it was here and I've been here since 2001. I also use the UPS store and Bank of America that are both nearby. For background of my day, I had cracked my cell phone and needed to have it replaced so I went to BEST BUY figuring, well, that I'd get the best buy. The price was good, but everything they did made the price go up. (They even tell you that you will be charged $45 if you return it!) But I digress. I wanted Chinese comfort food because I had made a pact not to eat out in February and I had a hankering for something that I just don't generally prepare myself. I have a heightened awareness that many restaurants cater to a large revenue of takeaway (take-out). Since the pandemic--and, perhaps, even before it--people have taken to have strangers pick up and deliver their food from restaurants. These orders seem to have a higher level of priority. That said, here is what I saw and felt. I was immediately greeted upon entering. I told them that I was going to be eating inside and alone. A clean and set table was offered to me near the front. From the chosen booth, I could see female Olympic skating on a flat screen or I could take the other side and watch my fellow diners. I opted for the former. The restaurant was at greater than 50% capacity at 6:00 pm and paper sacks were lining up at the cash register for pick-up by the takeaway drivers. The waitress/hostess offered me a variety of menus that were folio, laminated, or dim sum check list. I WAS DELIGHTED THAT SHE DID NOT TELL ME TO USE A QR CODE!! That in and of itself raised this restaurant to a higher level of praise! I was in the mood for BBQ pork since I eat chicken and fish most of the time. I noted that the chow fun had beef so I asked for a substitute of BBQ for beef. She told me that such a substitution could not be made. I shrugged and then said that I would take the BBQ in the lo mein then. Guess what, no BBQ pork! Oh well, that could have been fixed at the beginning of the exchange. So I stuck with the beef. I ordered vegetable tofu soup. The order seemed a bit slow. (Or maybe it was just that I was getting very tired of watching Olympic ice skating). The soup arrived and I noted that the broth looked a bit colorless. Generally, stock should give the soup a certain level of color, but it was well seasoned. The tofu was soft and the broccoli florets were infused in garlic. I mean BURSTS of garlic! That was actually a pleasant treat. The beef chow fun arrived within a reasonable span of time. I actually like to finish the soup before the next course, but this was fine since I was able to go back and forth between the two dishes. The beef was tender and sliced thin. There were ample onions and sprouts in the dish and it was covered with a flavorful brown sauce. It was served at an appropriate warmth and was very much to my liking. I was asked what I wanted to drink. I said water. Consequently, no tea was offered. I'm not sure if this is a common practice. Additionally, no rice was offered, however in their defense, I was ordering chow fun, so who needs rice when one is eating noodles, right? I will probably return to try something else because I am sure this is a good restaurant. This neighborhood needs more higher end, sit-down Chinese restaurants so that we don't become a community of PANDA diners (I am just saying here that PANDA is fast food and a restaurant offers a different dining experience). The service might have been a bit faster, but, as I had said, I am aware that they do a sizable amount of takeaway, so I will not fault them for that! I would strongly recommend JS Foothill Restaurant as a Chinese food option. read more

Hidden gem in the Pasadena foothills. Placed a phone order for beef chow fun and crystal shrimp dumplings (har gow - a dim sum favorite). Food was hot and ready, fresh out of the kitchen when I walked in. The young lady at the desk was very sweet, I asked for some plates and utensils so I can share with friends and get their input as well. She was very nice and gave me everything without hesitation. There were only 2 other parties dining, but they had just opened for the day. Everything looked clean. The verdict on the food, 10 out of 10 all around!! Most definitely my new fav dimsum restaurant! The restaurant itself is so clean and cute on the inside. The service was fantastic! They were so helpful and so nice. Now the food.. WOW! the shrimp and chive dumplings are incredible. Highly recommend getting the soy sauce noodles. Shu Mai and Har Gow are delicious as well. I didn't loveeee the beef rice noodle, I preferred the BBQ pork one. But I will be trying the shrimp one next. Tea was fresh and comforting. I also ordered a Thai Iced tea that was so refreshing. Best Chinese food in the area without having to drive to Arcadia or Alhambra. It's the only Chinese restaurant in our pickup rotation. The food tastes great, owner and staff are nice, it's reliable good food. It's a very kid friendly restaurant and they give the toddlers their own plastic plate and utensils. JS Foothill is a new restaurant in the same plaza as Ralph's and Jamba Juice. The restaurant is clean, the service is good, and the food is solid. We ordered the BBQ pork fried rice, beef chow fun, and a couple dim sum dishes including the pork buns, turnip cake, and the juicy dumplings. The glazed baked pork bun is huge! We split one order (2 buns) between 4 people. I loved the music they were playing during lunch - all acoustic versions of karaoke songs. read more

The food is totally awesome old school Cantonese food. Everything comes out hot hot hot! And like mom made. They even peeled the gai lan stalks so everything is tender and tasty, with great wok hay, and the oyster sauce isn't just oyster sauce but mixed with chicken stock so that the flavor is just right. read more

We wanted to try this new place to support their business. We ordered 7 entrees in order to try them. Only one was edible and that was garlic chicken . The rest was so bland. Do not order the Orange Chicken. It is absolutely awful!!! The quality of their beef and chicken is really bad. Lo mein is way too oily. Kung Pao shrimp was jelly like. Food was great (and I would go back). The problem, they need more wait staff. Our party of 6 arrived at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb 18th. Finally got menus about 10 min. after seating, another 20 minutes waiting for order to be taken, another 20 minutes waiting for food. Still left nice tip, because it was obviously not the wait staffs fault they were understaffed. The people at the table next to us, who had already ordered when our party arrived, were still being brought their food even after ours was brought to table. As I stated at the beginning of this review - the food was really, really good. Next time I will call "to go" order in and wait about an hour before pickup. Hopefully they can hire additional employees soon....it would be a shame to have this culinary talent wasted. read more

Shrimp in lobster sauce disappointing, kung pao chicken ok. The shrimp dish was salty, shrimp were hard and not fresh tasting, not enough egg, watery, and mini corn pieces did not help off flavor. For $24 for lunch, you should make an excellent dish, and include even a small amount of rice. The restaurant was not busy, and yet we had to wait for fifteen minutes for the food to arrive. Since the prices are $2 or more than a comparable Chinese restaurant, one might expect the food to be better than average. The chow mein and beef roll were served cold, whereby the hot and sour soup was all starchy with minimum to none of the typical ingredients such as tofu, shredded, pork, mushroom, and egg flower. Went to a new Dim Sun place in Hastings Ranch. We got the lo mai gai, sun mai, har gow, lo bok go, shrimp cheung fun, hom suey gok, everything was slightly different than traditional dim sum but still all delicious. Lo bok go had bigger chunks of Chinese sausage and was extra crispy and thinner. Cheung fun noodles were a little thicker and foggier than traditional. Hom suey gok was a bit more dense and not fried (?). Lo mai gai was really sticky and less of a gravy consistency- more just pieces of meat. Place is solid and a great option that is close to home. Friends invited me to dinner at JS Foothill on 7-1-23. None of us had been there before and WOW were we pleased! We had honey walnut shrimp (shrimp were cooked to perfection and must have been fresh/not frozen); Egg rolls were perfectly crisp. Scallops with mixed vegetables were heaven (vegetables wonderfully tender and crisp). And even the orange chicken was great. I ordered this because the menu is so extensive that I couldn't make up my mind when my friends were ready to order. Great flavors all around and if you have a taste for Very spicy stuff, just ask for jalapeño as one of us did and even those came so thinly sliced as to be almost transparent! Each dish was generous and beautifully presented and service was great. We WILL be back. And next time will try Dim Sum! read more
