This is a long established restaurant in Pasadena. My family has been customers since 1998, through multiple locations. This location is older and provides no frills with the decor. Today, I did have to wait a while to be seated as it seems they were understaffed. Food here is always consistent and good. My favorite menu items are the Egg Foo Young and Combination Fried Rice. For this visit I had the lunch plate which includes an entree, soup (Hot and Sour or Egg Flower), salad, rice (steamed or fried), and egg roll. I ordered the Sweet and Sour pork (Egg Flower soup w/ fried rice)($13) and a cola (2). The food came out quickly and was hot. Flavor of the food was good. I especially enjoyed the salad. The food was very mediocre. I expected more for the pricing. We ordered the combination kung pao, chicken fried rice and the beef with broccoli. We ordered to go and it was so hot on the way home, we thought it was freshly cooked but once we started eating, it seemed as if it had been sitting for a while and had been reheated. The freshest thing we got was the white rice. There was absolutely no one in the restaurant and that should have been a sign that it's not as good as it once was. Read the Yelps and got take out. Recommendations from other Yelpers were War Won Ton Soup and dry Sautéed green beans. We needed one more item so asked the person on the phone what they recommend. Combination Kung Pow! It was amazing! Fresh red bell peppers enveloped into a spicy peanut sauce with chicken beef and shrimp! Yum Yum Yum! The soup was fresh, hot and flavorful and the green beans were so good they were almost naughty! Don't be scared because there's not a packed dining room, honestly I LOVE private dining! But we walked over with the dog to grab take out because, the dog wanted to stroll and meet people. So we would totally come back for dine in and take out! I have to throw down a really good review here for Grandview Palace. Obviously, nothing is perfect, but we have NEVER been disappointed by this place. It had been a while since we came and we were having guests over, who specifically requested we get Chinese take-out. Remembering that we had ordered here before, I figured why not give it another shot. Absolutely worth the revisit. We ordered: Vegetable Chop Suey. Sesame Chicken. Vegetable Lo Mein. Chicken with Mixed Vegetables. Every dish was awesome, tasted great. Each one had a distinct flavor that was not like the others. Meat was clean and not fatty. And it was burning hot. Even after I drive home, and put it on the counter for ten minutes before we opened it, it literally burned my mouth. Our bill for four main dishes, and two sides of rice was less than $70. I found the lunch special to be a great value at about $14 for the kung pao combo, but what was served to me was certainly not the item I was expecting. I use to go to Grandview ALL the time as a kid back when this place use to be on California Blvd across from Huntington Hospital. They also have another Grandview Palace over in the east side of Pasadena next to guitar center. Grandview is a Pasadena Classic. I came in during lunch time on Friday morning and it was generally pretty slow. We were sat quickly next to a window. The busser/ Server was very attentive and had a strong sense of urgency. Water refill happened instantly and he could anticipate our needs as they came. We ordered and the food came out suspiciously quick. Maybe like 10 minutes tops but it felt like 5. I gave my fiancé the eyebrow raise and said "we probably got some leftovers or something that was sitting out. This came out way too quick" but then we took our first bites and our food was sooo goood. The orange chicken was a bit too acidic but salt fixed that up. Overall 25$ for all this food is a steal so no complaints here. Street Parking is kind of rough in old town Colorado but there are parking structures all around within walking distance. Ambiance was pretty chill and casual. You can tell this place is really only recognized by the Pasadena locals and the elders who heard of this place back in the day. It was generally an older crowd. The outdated interior and worn out menus had a certain type of charm to it but with food prices that low I wouldn't expect a huge renovation on the establishment or material any time soon. Today I ordered my customary dishes (through Door Dash), Honey Walnut Shrimp and Kung Pao chicken and a side of pork egg rolls. The entire meal was inedible. Absolutely nothing was good. I've been a loyal customer of the takeout here for years, but I decided to finally dine in - it will also be my last time. I ordered my usual crab rangoon (which I've always enjoyed) and a tofu vegetable soup, hoping for something light yet flavorful. Instead, the soup tasted like plain warm water with vegetables floating in it. I added chili oil and soy sauce to give it some flavor, and when one of the servers came over to refill my water, he actually commented on how much soy sauce I put in my own bowl. When I explained that the soup had no taste, he told me "it's not supposed to because it's supposed to be light." Since when does customer service include lectures? This is a shabby, dark hole in the wall - not a Michelin starred fine dining experience. I have never been to a restaurant where a server felt the need to tell me how I should be eating food that I paid for when I did not ask. That kind of unnecessary, dismissive comment to a first-time dine-in guest is the fastest way to lose a loyal customer. I hope the gentleman who tried to humble me as the only patron in the restaurant at the time one day puts that much thought & energy into the restaurant's dingy atmosphere - complete with plastic table cloths, scratched-up silverware, chipped plates, and heat-stained bowls. My boyfriend chose this place for early dinner and it was very disappointing. We walked in and nobody was in the restaurant. We ordered a beef dish and a fried rice. The beef had thick gelatin in it and some pieces felt frozen. We stopped eating it. Fried rice had no flavor. We asked for the check and told the waiter about the beef issue and he gave us so much attitude. We have been visiting this spot for years with my in laws. The food is very good and it comes out piping hot and tastes delicious. Our fav is the special fish dish. It's like battered and fried fish in a yummy savory soy and garlic sauce. The walnut prawns are also crispy and delicious too. I love the pan fried noodles they use, they are thick and they will add extra sauce if you request. The service is friendly and they are kind. Oh one time they saw Casey affleck here on Christmas! I haven't had a lot of amazing Chinese food since moving to LA in 2018, and I dare say the majority of it has been mediocre, so I was pleasantly surprised by my experience with Grandview's food. This was when they were offering takeout only, so I called ahead to order the Happy Family and got home in time to enjoy it before it got cold. It was enough for two meals, so I ate half that night and had the rest for lunch the next day. The Happy Family is a mix of different meats and veggies, with flat noodles, and I thought it was a good item that showcases the quality of their food. It also comes with white rice, so you really get a bit of everything. I was eyeing the honey walnut shrimp, but figured this was a good first-timer item. It was well cooked and seasoned/sauced, and the variety of textures was quite satisfying. I was so hungry that I actually forgot to take a picture until I had plated my first meal, which unfortunately made it look less appetizing but oh well. I can't speak on their service since I had it at home, but I didn't have any issues while going to pick up my food. This is the closest Chinese restaurant to both my current and new apartments, and the only one I've been to so far in Pasadena, so I will likely return (and am looking forward to trying a new item)! read more

It's clear we won't be getting their soups again... or anything else, frankly. Wahhhhh - appetizer platter was horrible. Like I couldn't believe fried things could be bad; frozen cheap egg rolls were filled with mush veg mix, spareribs over cooked, paper chicken weird, beef on stick was like a thin ribbon of beef jerky, fried shrimp crunchy flavorless. And how could crab Rangoon be effed up? Stale wonton wrap! - beef and broccoli was low quality beef with tons of minced garlic and watery flavorless sauce. - "triple" lo mein was also not v good. Was more like yakisoba and the shrimp they used was wow so small cheap. This has the most flavor but still lackluster. - hot and sour soup was tangy with a quick but also no real flavor! And watery vs thick. Super disappointing. Surprised this place is still in business. Grandview palace used to be a staple in Pasadena mostly there old locations on Colorado and Fair Oaks. I'm not sure if this location is associated with the other Grandview though. I'm guessing the reason this place is almost always empty is because of the customer service. Heard from others that the guy who usually takes the orders absolutely hates his job and you definitely get that vibe. Dude is so lazy and unhappy that he'd rather have people take all orders to go rather than accept dine in customers. This is one of the hidden gems in Pasadena. Love this place a lot. We came here often, but sadly we moved out of the area. This is classic American style Chinese food done right. The service is so great. We became fast friends with the workers there. You get seated fast and your food comes in fresh. Our all time favorite is the orange chicken with real pieces of orange, bbq fried rice, wor wonton soup, and the crispy rice chicken soup. When it's too crowded at other big restaurants with a wait time of 2 hours you can always count on this place to seat you right away. We even booked this place for my son's 2nd birthday. They really made his birthday special. Thank you so much. When we come back to Pasadena we will definitely stop by and eat. Our group stopped into Grandview Palace this week after seeing the ridiculous prices of the surrounding restaurants. Very quiet and cozy when we came in (around 8pm on a Thursday). Service was extremely prompt. We had menus and drinks almost immediately. Wait staff was very patient with our particularly rowdy group and made us feel very comfortable. Our group all ordered different items and appetizers and yet everything came out hot and ready with minimal wait time. ~5-10 minutes after ordering. Food was delicious. I personally had the sweet and sour chicken. Taste was 10/10. The chicken was perfectly crispy yet still moist on the inside. Rather than serving you rice on your plate, they instead give your whole table a (from what I understand) unlimited refill bowl of white rice to share. I actually really preferred this so I could portion out my own rice and not overbear my entree with it. Portion size was amazing. I had my fill before I even finished half of my meal (be prepared to ask for a takeaway box lol). Price was also very good. For my whole meal (Sweet + Sour Chicken, Potstickers, and a Soda) I only paid about $25 before the tip which is extremely reasonable considering the amount of food that was included. Overall rating was a 10/10. We hope to come back to Pasadena soon if not just to make another trip to Grandview Palace. read more

My official Pasadena comfort food. I moved away from my usual place and was worried I wouldn't find anything similar but grandview place is SOOOOO much better. Just had the worst Chinese food in my life. I ordered many things as I planned to take most of it home to eat over the next couple of days. Not one thing was fresh. I felt like I was eating warmed up leftovers that were over two weeks old. When the bill came I told the waiter I didn't like my food and wasn't going to take any of it home. He just looked at my blankly, then gave me the bill. I asked him how old the food was. He claimed it was made fresh. Bullshit! I got hit with a $56 bill in which I hated everything. Amazingly, the waiter never offered to take anything off the bill. He just took my signed bill and walked away. I'll never eat there again and you shouldn't either. The place looks run down but don't let that discourage you. The food is mostly authentic and tasty. For quick no-nonsense service this is a good option My favorite is the seafood with the vegetables sort of a stew which is just the right amount of spice. They didn't have green tea or diet soda at the time we are but that's nit a big deal. Since the other location closed this is the only Grandview palace location left (family operated for 15 years!)
