I would skip the burnt garlic rice and Chinese pancakes but maybe also order the Chinese broccoli again. Overall, the food flavor was DELICIOUS. We had a reservation for a Wednesday evening at 5:30 and were one of the only people in there- I love that but if that's not your jam, it gets a lot busier later in the evening. Our service was exceptional, the waiter gave us plenty of recommendations, our water was frequently filled, and food came out quickly but not too quickly that our dishes felt rushed. We ordered the rice cakes with chorizo and they were perfection- if you are thinking about them but aren't sure, just do it! The scallops had a really flavorful sauce underneath and they had an perfect crust on one side and a beautiful tender inside. My boyfriend loves steak so we ordered the grass fed rib eye. I am not the hugest red meat girl and this was still a phenomenal dish. The whole peanuts complement the flavors well and the mint leaves helped cool down my mouth from those Thai chilis! I really wanted to love this place when we tried it, as I had seen all the raving reviews online, the cross references on multiple food blogs, and the shining acclamations from my friends and coworkers. However, my personal experience there didn't live up to my expectations, and I found myself leaving the meal feeling sorely disappointed. We ordered the beef tartare, shrimp and Chinese sausage buns, and smoked tofu as appetizers to share. All were fine, but none stood out as much as the beef tartare. My friends thought it was superb, especially given the price point. For entrees, I ordered the geoduck black rice. When my dish arrived, it was completely soaked in oil. The first bite tasted really good, as I enjoyed my mouthful of buttery goodness. However, it very quickly became way too salty for my tastes, and I have a pretty high salt tolerance. The bottom of my dish literally had about a half inch of oil, and it was like my rice was swimming in a soup. I've never once sent a dish back to the kitchen, and I usually try to just go through with it or accept that maybe it's just my tastebuds, but this was inedible and I couldn't get through more than a few bites. My boyfriend ended up telling our waitress about it for me instead, and when I asked if there was anything they could do about the dish, she said no since it's just the way that it was cooked. My other friends thought their dishes were on the saltier side as well, but none were as bad as mine. The restaurant was nice enough to take it off our final bill, but I spent the rest of the night chugging water and looking for something else to eat to wrap up my dinner instead. I've had such a long week of eating so much East Asian food that I almost cancelled this reservation but Joule really is doing something special with Korean flavors! My boyfriend and I have been wanting to eat at Joule for over a year! We made a reservation a week in advance (and Saturday was already out, so we opted for Sunday) for a table for two. I think you need to come in with a reservation, because the restaurant was packed for the entire night when we came. It's located on Stone Way, right next to The Whale Wins. Our server for the night was great; he offered opinions about the dishes, answered questions about ingredients and seasonality, and was always around when we wanted to order more. I'll rate the items individually: Beef Tartare: 3/5, this was nothing special. I appreciated the aioli and the pine nuts. I did not like the fried rice paper that came with it; the texture felt wrong and I would've just appreciated some bread. Geoduck Black Rice: 3/5, also nothing special. I expected the entire dish to resonate geoduck energy, so I was disappointed that there were a couple pieces that just looked like they had been added. Also, since the rice came in a skillet and was marketed as "paella" style, we were expecting the rice to be crispy... nope, just super oily. The beans that were in the rice were crunchy but I'm not sure if I liked the flavor that much. Kombu Cured Mackerel: 5/5, phenomenal first bite. I love the green papaya bits and the chimichurri cilantro dressing. The mackerel is a perfect fusion food; it tastes exactly like the grilled mackerel you would get at a traditional Korean restaurant. But the flavors on the side add so much. "that" short-rib Steak: 5/5, also phenomenal. I am more of the opinion that this is just a really good short-rib steak, there was nothing hugely special about it. The kimchi and gochujang on the side were nice, but it wasn't a hugely creative dish. Regardless, the meat was amazing and each bite was great. Sujungkwa Flan: 5/5, I had no idea what to expect but this was so good. Sujungkwa is a cinnamon punch and somehow they translated that perfectly to a glaze on the flan. It was garnished with jujube which was really sweet :) The flan was just great! I don't know how anyone would mess up flan. But the toppings really made this stand out. After our starters, I was a little impatient - they were just okay, I didn't get the appeal of the place. But when our main courses came out, oh MAN. Those were so good. And our dessert did not disappoint, the jujube on top was the star. I absolutely love Joule and would love to come back another time. My rating is more like 4.5 stars. To be honest I had low expectations coming here bc we tried Revel a few years ago and was not impressed. This was one of the few places that still has a heated outdoor patio and since the owners have James Beard recognition I decided to give it a shot. We came here for our anniversary and to celebrate Valentine's Day before the snow storm. We ordered a bunch of stuff and overall- the food was four stars and the service five stars. Food: overall pretty good. Nothing blew my mind and some dishes were too salty or overpriced but the rice cakes with chorizo and butter rice really impressed me. Good- Smoked tofu (tho would have been even better if this was a warm dish), Rice cakes with chorizo, butter rice, joule box dessert, Sautéed pea vine Meh- mackerel (good but tastes just like any other mackerel dish) Skip- Kalbi burger, scallion pancake (good but nothing you can't find anywhere else and not worth $12 for the extra dollop of creme fraiche and salmon roe) Service- really warm and friendly. They kept asking us how our anniversary dinner was and wishing us happy anniversary. And they even unexpectedly comped dessert which was really sweet. I loved the outdoor patio with the fire pit in the center. It kept me super warm in the snowy weather. Went out to Joule for dinner last night and the service and ambience were great-5 stars to the hostess and table waiter. Overall, we ordered the beef tartare (excellent), kimchi trio, cold smoked tofu ( excellent), short rib (excellent, but the finishing salt was too heavy), Chinese broccoli ( a little too much liquid and stalks were undercooked), and lastly the charred octopus. The first half of dinner was really great, but the second half fell off. I was really excited about the octopus, but ended with a very chewy entree. The knives were struggling to cut through the tentacles. What a real shame...maybe things were off that night. I will come back, but maybe not order the octopus. read more

My only complaint was the geoduck fried rice, I would definitely skip this one as it tasted like just rice, unseasoned, with 4 teeny tiny pieces of geoduck. Hehe wooooo just realized this review is the 1000th review for this restaurant~ Definitely a dinner splurge! This is a fairly packed modern Korean fusion restaurant in Fremont, along the Stone Way North, a street with a lot of culinary excellence. I made reservations for 3 people a week or so in advance, for a Thursday dinner - generally not too hard to get reservations but highly recommended. We started with some cocktails - they look very pretty! I personally got the cocktail with purple and red colors layered - I forgot the name (I don't see it on Yelp menu / restaurant website) I think it was A Night in Portland? That one was very good but also very strong. A nice flair with the chili salt. Then, we shared a bunch of small plates - bone marrow, spicy rice cake, Chinese broccoli, kimchi trio, "that" short rib steak, mackerel, ginger shortbread ice cream sandwich, and cheesecake. The bone marrow is super flavorful - a bit higher in fat content, but when spread it out like butter in the bread, it was a flavor explosion. Spicy rice cake also had chorizo too which was nice, and the texture is slightly crispy but also very chewy. It is definitely one of the more popular dishes on the menu. Chinese broccoli was fairly standard but I did not like the tanginess to this dish. The kimchi trio was a good experience - not really worth the $12 but it gave some variety and flair to a modern Korean cuisine. Especially the napa cabbage kimchi which you could easily get as banchan in a typical Korean restaurant. Short rib steak is very good - I love the gochujang that also added some aesthetics to the presentation of this dish. It was cooked medium which is sort of what I preferred (my ideal is always medium rare). It would have been nice to give customers the option to specify the rareness as it is a steak after all. The mackerel is very amazing too - for a fish dish this is definitely the one to get (waitress also complimented us saying that Gordon Ramsay actually visited this restaurant and said this was the best dish in the restaurant!!!). It is lightly seared and very tender, definitely one of the best mackerels I have eaten. The desserts were not too memorable but it was still decent. They did not really stand out to me for the price point but it was great to end the meal with some dessert. All the dishes are fully packed with flavor, with a lot of kimchi for the most part (depends on the dishes you order). As we got a lot of food (like 8 dishes) and 1 drink per person, the total came out to be roughly $80/person after tax/tip. Admittedly I've been hyped about visiting here for months. I've heard great reviews, and know the accolades the restaurant has received over time. Yet I found the overall experience highly disappointing. The food was standard, and nothing wowing or complex. One dish (Bao with Chinese sausage and shrimp) was a particularly strange combination, while the kimchi trio packed a lacklustre punch of either creativity or flavour. Cocktails were also standard. The "Smitten" was imbalanced in my opinion, creating an almost soapy flavour. Overall service was decent, though some servers were very short in their presentation and failed to explain the dishes. 4 Overall - Great dishes overall that lacked a bit of balance, and a big miss on the abalone fried rice. Scallion Pancake: The pancake itself is pretty nice! Nothing to write home about, but the dip makes it quite interesting. It could use a little salt (either in dip or on the pancake) but the creme fraiche/chili oil/ikura combo was interesting and tasty. Spicy Rice Cakes: Although we thought that this couldn't be that special, since other reviews raved about it, we gave it a shot. It's quite good! The rice cakes are ever-so-slightly crispy, as if they've been passed through a quick oil fry, which makes for a nice texture to bite and pick up the sauce with. The homemade chorizo is quite good too, and the addition of the Taiwanese pickled vegetables is really nice - though, I wish it were placed on top, rather than cooked within the dish. The cold and rawness of the pickled vegetables would've helped balance out the richness of everything else. More fresh elements would be nice here, like either more green onions or bigger pieces of it - perhaps julienned? Beef Tartare: This was my first time trying tartare, and it was very nice. More spice than I was expecting, but very creamy and well-seasoned. The chip is thin and crisp, but the portion of the tartare was such that I wish I had a little more chip. But that's mainly to say that there's a good amount of beef, which is a good thing. The nuts weren't particularly crunchy though - I think some cilantro stems mixed in here would give a nice freshness and texture. Abalone Fried Rice: I'd definitely skip this one. This is a seasonal item that just came back last week, and it was very disappointing. There really wasn't much flavor - not a lot of seasoning or even salt, and both the leek and the abalone failed to come through in the rice. I could only notice 4 razor-thin slices of abalone too. "that" Short Rib: This was a great steak! Tender, nicely cooked, and great marbling. The ssamjang was amazing and suited the meat very well. The only thing I'd change here is that instead of a softer, more fermented red kimchi, I'd actually serve this with a crisp and fresh white kimchi. The red kimchi and ssamjang share a very similar flavor profile already, and lighter kimchi would've helped balance out the fatty steak and deeply rich sauce. Still a great dish! Joule box: While I'd tweak small things to help balance out other, still delicious, dishes like the tartare, rice cakes, and short rib, the Joule box was near flawless and very well balanced. The rich semi freddo, crisp coconut bits, sweet tapioca, and tart grapefruit come together harmoniously to make for a great conclusion to the meal. It's not too sweet (the highest compliment I can give a dessert) and I felt like I could keep going for more without feeling bloated. There's a lot to like here! Most dishes are a 4-4.5 (missing some overall balance that I'd expect near this price point) but the rice was a big miss, which puts Joule at a 4. Finding a fun brunch place is a priority for me whenever I travel. Joule kept coming up on lists when I was researching our trip to Seattle, so I made a reservation online. Even better, it's within walking distance of where we stayed! Joule's brunch is unique because you can get a brunch entree plus a buffet of special dishes that go along with a different theme or cuisine each month. We visited on the last day of August, which was a Peruvian theme. You can also choose just a brunch entree and skip the buffet, but why would you?! I ordered the steak ($25 plus a $3 upcharge), my boyfriend got the waffle, and our friend tried the bao. The buffet included a dip, a couple salads, some pickles, a starchy side, a savory bread, and two dessert options. The presentation of the buffet items was great with perfect portions for the single items and beautifully composed family-style salads. My steak and eggs were perfectly cooked, medium rare steak and over easy eggs with no browning. The chimichurri sauce wasn't quite as flavorful as I am used to but I really enjoyed the dish. The star for me was the buffet, though. Each dish was very unique and had an interesting combination of flavors and ingredients. I had never had any of the items on the buffet and they were all tasty! The sweet potato / miso / bonito dip was definitely my favorite - super savory, umami, and a really nice velvety texture. The salads were both packed with flavor and perfectly dressed. I also really liked the purple starch with crackling. Unfortunately I wasn't able to try the suspiro de lima, but it looked really tasty. Service was friendly and easy, not overbearing or intrusive. This is a restaurant that I have wanted to try for years and I finally was able to go and it did not disappoint. I went with a group of 6 to celebrate a graduation from medical school so we were able to try a variety of options. The server recommended that we order ten dishes for the 6 of us and he was spot on with that number as that was the perfect amount. It was awesome to try so many different things as I prefer trying a variety of dishes as opposed to just ordering one thing. For a drink I got the Jalisco Campfire. It was smokey but not overpowering and I really enjoyed it. Everybody else at my table also really liked their cocktail as well. Our first dish was the Chinese scallion pancake. The salmon roe really added a nice element that complimented the chili oil and creme frache. Then we got the spicy rice cake. Our server recommended we order two of these and he was not wrong as honestly this was probably my favorite dish in a night where we had so many good dishes! It was full of texture and flavor as some bites were crispy and the chorizo and sauce took it to a whole new level. Definitely order this when you visit and take our servers advice and get two. The Chinese broccoli was delicious (always gotta order some vegetables amongst the protein) and the kimchi trio was of course always going to be fermented goodness, my favorite of the 3 was surprisingly the carrot and radish as I thought I'd like the traditional napa cabbage most. The black sesame noodle was very balanced and I could've eaten that whole plate myself with ease. We ordered two steaks, I personally preferred their famous short rib steak with the kalbi marinade but some people preferred the more pure meat taste from the coulotte which is a sirloin cut, really you can't go wrong with either! We ordered two fish dishes, a special that was halibut neck in a Tom Kha broth and the mackerel. I was pushing for the mackerel and I am so happy we ordered as it unanimously was in all of our top 3 dishes, the papaya and lemon with the fish was perfection. As good as the Joule Box looked we were too full for dessert and had ordered a cake for the occasion that was home as well but they were so kind and brought out two little pieces of cake for us to share to celebrate the occasion. I will return and I strongly recommend everyone visit this spot. I am excited to try some of the dishes I didn't get a chance to try this time and also to revisit some of my favorites. read more

The publicity about making the James Beard finalist list reminded me to try Joule as we re-engage with our world post-Omicron. The restaurant interior is lovely. It has an easy breezy low key elegance. I really appreciated that the tables aren't crowded together. Their front of house staff is fabulous. Warm, friendly, professional, efficient, attentive. We felt welcomed and cared for. It's also nice to hear that their chef is also a nice person. (I am sure this sets the tone and is wonderful to hear in contrast to other chef stories.) We had an extremely enjoyable experience. We got so excited I forgot to take pics of the Chinese broccoli and the spicy rice cake dishes. (Both thumbs up from us) Comparing my experience with other reviews, I would highly recommend. Some dishes will wow you more than others with flavor but I think that's great. Balance. Our top three favorites were the pancake, the "that" short rib, and the cod. (But really everything was enjoyable) Thoughts about other reviews: I saw some poo-poo the broccoli, but we really enjoyed it. The thick part of the stalk can be a bit crunchier, but I think it's better than overcooked. The Joule box dessert is not for you if you don't like coconut or the texture of tapioca. (If, however, your only reference for coconut is the cheapo stuff from childhood, maybe open your mind and give it a whirl.) Looking forward to going back! Got the Mad Hatcher chicken take out during all this Covid19 madness and it was delicious. Totally worth $18, and if you google the story of Mad Hatcher chicken, it's a fun little read during this pandemic. The chicken is perfectly brined and seasoned, and it's actually a little bit sweet which was a lovely surprise. The meat is moist is super flavorful. I'd be happy to order it again. Doesn't come with any sides. Pick up during the pandemic was easy. I ordered online a day in advance, and then needed to change my pick-up time. This was such an adventurous night for my tastebuds! I was a little outside my comfort zone and their menu was a little intimidating, but I went for it, and it was absolutely worth it. I wasn't the biggest fan of 'family style' but it allowed my friends and I to share multiple plates. There were things I tried, that I never would have tried if I hadn't of come to Joule. The food was wonderful, fun, colorful, and most importantly tasty! I was watching plates fly out the kitchen and I wanted to stick my fork in everything. Joule offers a really great atmosphere and a menu full of flavor. I'd recommend this place to anyone in the area. read more
