Came here for a birthday celebration with family! It is a busy place but luckily large. We had a reservation for a Saturday night. I started with an espresso martini, since it was my birthday being celebrated. Then I ordered three dishes for the the table. I ordered the Kashk-e Bademjan, a eggplant dip with crispy onions and green onions on top. It was very flavorful and a creamy texture. I ordered the Mushroom Khotesh, a creamy mushroom stew/curry kind of thing. Very very tasty, and it came with rice! The last item was the Joon Kabob Platter. It was the perfect size for four people. It came with everything - rice, kubideh kabob, barg, chicken kabob, grilled tomato, and grilled onion. It was all absolutely delicious! The three dishes were just a little more than needed for the four of us. But we brought some home as leftovers so very worth it. We even ordered dessert, saffron and rose water ice cream! It was so good and refershing, easy to eat after all the food. Definitely would come here again for special celebrations! read more

This is a very solid 4 star establishment. I could have given it a 5 star but the ambiance isn't there. Also I am not a big fan of the Persian style cooking of fish - they can get a clue from the Turkish neighbors. For kebabs however they are very good. read more

Food - 4 Service - 2 Ambiance - 4.5 I was going to give this review a 4, as most of the food was yummy, and the ambiance is really nice. It's a huge restaurant but they do a great job making it feel cozy because there's a lot of separate rooms, and nooks. But, the waitress Madlyn, although she started great with a lot of enthusiasm and suggestions which we appreciated, was a huge a turnoff towards the last 20 minutes or so. She got really quiet, and kept coming to our table to slowly clear it off. But what got us is she went so far as to take our water cups all away, and snatched one of our napkins too. It was very abrupt and rude. There were many tables left still eating and drinking, so they were not anywhere near closing down. I have never had water cups snatched up that way, it was startling, and extremely off-putting. We went from raving to quite upset at the end, we were annoyed we even left a generous tip at that point. I learned from this not to tip until we are about to leave. Back to the food, I love the starter plate, it's a compliemtary pita plate with three little dips, delicious start. The hummus app and the lamb meatballs, again very delicious. We got a number of other main dishes to share, and I did not love a couple of them. The salad we got was way overdressed and heavy, and the cherry rice was just okay. The fish dish we got already had rice in it, so the cherry rice was an unncessary addition. The filet mignon was a little tough, and not flavorful. I would go back if I had a different waitress and would probably focus mostly on the small plates (and maybe try another meat dish) because they were the highlights of the night. We were a group of 3 and were able to be seated on a Saturday evening at 5:30 without a reservation, but it's definitely a busy place so would be better to reserve on the weekend. Here's what we tried: Roast half chicken - delicious, juicy, and came on a flavorful bed of mushroom stew Seasonal vegetable hummus - the BEST dish! sweet and creamy, you must order it Tahdig - we ordered the herbal rice and this one had fava beans inside so I'm not sure if those are the same dish, but it was delicious, herbal, and slightly fatty roast cauliflower and tomato - in a fairly spicy sauce, the tomatoes and pickled onions were good but the cauliflower was not particularly exciting, probably wouldn't get this one again eggplant - (forgot the name of the dish) very tasty and minty, eggplant flavor came through the flatbread was also so delicious, even on its own! and for dessert, the brûléed custard tart, flavored with cardamom, was lovely. highly recommend! read more

I love sprinkling sumac on my kubideh and rice.... That spice screams Iran. Anyways, sorry I don't have much to add because I just wasn't really impressed. We came back and tried tab sodas and new some dishes. I don't recommend tab sodas because they were filled with ice from bottom to top, only a few sips of soda. Nor do I recommend the desserts because they were very ordinary. The food is the best, including appetizers, salads, rice and kabobs. We liked it. 3*Sour Cherry & Tarragon Soda: basically a full glass of ice, not much drink at all. 3*Black Lime & Fig Soda: interesting but too much ice. 4*Mast-o Musir: a yogurt appetizer made of yogurt, Persian dried shallots, mint, rose petals: mild flavor. 4*Mirza Ghasemi: eggplant appetizer made of eggplant, sungold cherry tomatoes, onion, garlic, turmeric, lime, olive oil poached egg. flavor was light. 4.8*Shishlik (Lamb Rib Chop): five pieces of lamb rib chops were tender and flavorful. Randy Jackson voice: "It's a no from me dog." How can a Persian restaurant mess up a classic Kubideh this bad?? Our party of 8 had a reservation for Tuesday night. Service was great and so was the ambiance. We were seated in a semi private nook which we all loved since we were celebrating. Most of us got the kubideh, a few got the chicken and one went for the chenjeh. The kubideh was just awful. The texture was similar to sandpaper, no flavor and most of it was served cold. I personally wasn't a fan of the rice either. The chicken was OK and the chenjeh was the best dish out of everything. We also tried a few appetizers - eggplant, hummus, cucumber salad and shirazi salad - all were good and probably the only items that were worth it. I'd rate Joon four and a half stars. Giant, upscale Persian restaurant. We made a pit stop on our way back from Virginia to New York on a Saturday night. We walked in a little before six and were seated immediately. Most customers were dressed nicely. They have a full bar. About eight beers on draft; all were macros. Decent selection of wines with plenty of options available by the glass. They have complimentary bread which comes with feta cheese, goat cheese, an herb butter, and a minced olive salad. I appreciated the starter as free bread courses seem to becoming obsolete. For appetizers, we shared the Persian cucumber salad, the rotisserie cauliflower, and the masto khiar (yogurt and cucumber dip). These appetizers were plenty and we could have easily skipped the main course. For a vegetarian couple, I think this would be a perfect order. For a meat eating couple, I'd probably skip the cauliflower in lieu of an entree. I'd also encourage a half portion of the yogurt dip. The Persian cucumber salad is a must order. It comes with pomegranate seeds, pistachios, herbs, and dressing. So much going on here. There a fruit flavors, herb and leaf flavors, nuttiness. There are elements of sweetness, sourness, and bitterness. One of my favorite salads that I've had. The cauliflower was a great dish too and super filling as it's a half head of cauliflower. Pleasantly seasoned and dressed. I think it eats more like an entree and would recommend it as a main. I enjoyed dipping it into the yogurt. We were full by the time the main course was platted, but it made a zealous effort to try everything on the plate. We had a mix of skewers including the lamb kebab, the barg, and the chicken kebab. All of them were juicy. They were a bit liquify; I'm guessing they were baked in oil. Would have loved for some char on the meats; nevertheless, they were delicious! Loved the roasted onion and tomato too. The star of the plate might have been the tahdig crispy rice. It's served upside down, so there is a dome of crispy rice over the soft and savory rice. The top layer is so crispy that you could eat it with your hands as a chip! We were very full, so we skipped dessert. Though, all the options looked intriguing. The service was attentive and our waiter was friendly. The pacing of the food was quite good too. There are gendered restrooms which has handicap accessible stalls. I love Mediterranean food so I was so excited to come here. The service was amazing, everyone on staff was nice and hospitable but the food fell all the way flat. My favorite item was the complimentary appetizer... Given the price point, I thought the food was going to be exceptional, but it was wayy overpriced for mediocre food. If you're coming from DC it's not worth the trek, the prices at Ala and Maydan are cheaper and taste 10x better. We ordered the Duck Fesenjoon and Barg Kabob. I didn't finish the duck. It was cooked well but the sauce was bland and did not go well with the duck so I couldn't eat it. The rice that came with it was too crunchy. The Barg kabob was ok, most likely bc it was filet mignon, but it needed a sauce or something. It was just lightly seasoned meat and crunchy white rice. We also ordered lamb Sanbuseh and mirza ghasemi for the table. The lamb sanbuseh was fine, it reminded me of a meat pie. However, avoid the mirza ghasemi. It sounds good on the menu but it's a saucy mixture and the only flavor that really came out was the tomato. It's a cute spot for a date night, so maybe come here just for drinks? read more

Nothing like having another Persian restaurant in Tyson's (where Chef Geoff's used to reside). Came in on a Saturday for lunch to a relatively empty restaurant. First area we were seated in had some condensation issues w their HVAC (hot day) and was dripping all over the table and seating area. We asked to be relocated and were seated in a new area. This might've been a problem if the restaurant had been packed. Server was super friendly and patient and brought provided us the drink and food menus. We started off with the Anar Margarita which was super tasty. Next, we ordered the mast khiyar as an appetizer which was really good and creamy. For entrees we (4 people) shared the kabob platter which included one kubideh, one barg and one chicken skewer. We also added another kubideh entree and a baghali polo. The kubideh was a bit flat and jelly like, the chicken was a bit dry but the star was definitely the barg. I'd come back and order just the barg and mast khiyar. The food was overall pretty good. I'd say that in my preferred order for Persian kabobs in the DMV: 1) Rumis 2) Shamshiri 3) Alborz 4) Amoo 5) Joon & Divan Wasn't the best kubideh I've had and wouldn't order it again. The chicken was t bad just a bit dry (also you get some boneless, some bone in). The barg had the best flavor and the baghali polo was good as well. The check at the end was all over the place. Items we never ordered appeared on it like 2-3 glasses of wine, entree we never ate as well as appetizers we never ordered. I can count in one hand the number of Iranian Restaurants that I have ate in the US. After reading the info about this new restaurant in Tyson, I knew I have to stopped here and try. It is located in the same block as Tiffany & Co. I do like the deco and the ambience of this restaurant. It definitely feels upscale but homey. Service is great. Our waitress is very attentive and knowledgeable. Our water bottle and bread were refilled promptly. Now for the food. Instead of the usual Kabob, we decided to get the Duck Beryan and the Barg Kabob. We also orders the Lamb & Pistachio Meatballs for appetizer. The lamb appetizer is amazing . I never have anything like this before. The Duck is very flavorful and is a huge portion. Now, the meal isn't cheap. For us, it's about $250 before tips. I'm torn on this. The food is very good but I'm not sure if the price is justified. But I guess that's the price you have to pay for a chef who used to worked at a one Michelin Star restaurant in DC. read more

Situated in the former Chef Geoff space, Joon's interior design/decor was well thought out for the perfect ambiance. Beautiful spaces with perfect levels of lighting from lovely fixtures, fixated with marble tables and luxurious color tones. Our server Madison really made the night a memorable experience. She was attentive, funny, and accommodating. Each table is immediately set with a small sampling of dips and bread - great way to start the meal. The food overall was good. Branzino was fresh and tender, the eggplant dip savory, and the kebob dish flavorful. Downside - the prices are quite high, definitely upscale (dress appropriately). I was really excited about the tadigh rice..which was ok - it wasn't as fluffy as it should be, a bit dry. The chicken kebob was also a tad dry. Food is beautiful but bland. Seated at the bar and our bartender disappeared for longer than we were dining there. Finally got the check by flagging someone down. They give you some complimentary starter bites that were good. The hummus with duck came out and I could not recognize it. Looked like a soup. Mains arrived quickly and had the most beautiful presentation, especially the charred rice. Except when you touch it, the rice wasn't crispy at all. Was this previously cooked and reheated? The burnt bottom has the same texture as the rest of the rice. Lamb shank was great on the top, falling off the bone. But on the bottom it was dense and not what you would expect. Overall it needed salt. Didn't eat half my food. It's an elegant space with free valet parking. They can improve on seasoning the food. read more

My friends and I tried out Joon for their unlimited brunch served on the weekends for $50/pp. Get ready to feast because the portions are bigger than your average all you can eat restaurant. The decor and ambiance is beautiful and everyone was very friendly. We loved the Magyu-e Sokhari, which had large pieces of fried shrimp and fried pickled veggies on top of a spicy tomato sauce. Pair that with the garlic aioli and you have perfection! They offer free valet parking so you can pull right in to the front entrance. Our waiter Grant was spectacular and made our dining experience one to remember. We let him order our plates each round and his parings and suggestions complemented each other very well. On Sunday, I drove out to Vienna, VA to be formally introduced to the Persian cuisine at Joon. I was treated like royalty and had the opportunity to try almost everything on the menu. I thoroughly enjoyed everything, however the standout for me was the Duck Fesenjoon. The duck was so tendered that it easily came off the bone with no effort at all. I learned that the tenderness was due to the 14 hour cooking process. Special out to the bartender, Justin for crafting a speciality cocktail that centered around my love of citrusy flavors. The chicken kabob tastes like any other kabob at a middle easter fast casual joint, and the drinks are overpriced at $19 a pop. BEWARE, although I couldn't find it ANYWHERE on the website, you have a 2 hour time limit for dinner, drinks, desserts, and payment. You only find out about the time limit after you pay to reserve your reservation and when you receive your reminder. At our two hour mark, a lady came by and kicked us out of the booth - this really annoyed me as we just dropped over $300 on dinner with our table of 4, and we were treated like riff-raff and kicked out. I expect more from a fine dining establishment - let me enjoy my company while my dinner digests. The sour cherry rice was unique and something I'll make at home now. We won't be back. read more

Our favorites are the French toast, chicken kabobs are flavorful and tender, crispy potatoes, the fried shrimp (even though the vegetables had a less desirable strong vinegar pickled flavor). She looked at us like, "You don't belong here," with her nose high in the air! We had a reservation and, as a courtesy, showed up 15 minutes early. However, she led us to the most hidden table in a dark corner of the restaurant, as if God forbid someone might see us! When I asked for a better table, she offered a four-top directly in front of the kitchen and bathroom. I refused both options and went back to the desk. We have the one w herbs rather than cherry but I want to try that one as well. Great hummus. Biggest surprise was the cucumber salad which is light and full of texture. Lamb kebab was extremely well done and a big piece, which makes sense for the price. Cocktails were great as well (I got the Gin one w saffron ice) but pricey as expected. Dessert stole the show w the custard pie and the large cookie thing w cream and cherries in the middle (incredible and unique). Points off only because they clearly packed in more tables as we sat next to the extremely busy kitchen exit/entrance which took away from the experience. Joon was the perfect date night spot for my fiancé and me, and we had such a great time. All of the staff that we interacted with were awesome, very friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Our waiter was super helpful when we tried to decide what to order, giving us lots of recommendations. We had the pistachio soup and roasted cauliflower to start, as well as the complimentary butter/cheese/tapenade plate. The pistachio soup was so cool, I had no idea what to expect but it was creamy and so flavorful. The cauliflower had a small kick but as someone who doesn't like things too spicy, it was perfect. For dinner we ordered the braised lamb shoulder pavé, roasted half chicken, and fava bean and dill rice. The rice was HUGE, we're so glad we took our waiter's advice and split one between us. Everything we ate was delicious, no complaints whatsoever. For drinks we got albaloo sangria and a bottle of white wine, the perfect complements to the dinner. Had unlimited small plates brunch here and tried a lot of their dishes. The flavors of the classic dips (hummus, labneh, etc) and chicken and lamb kabobs are very good. However the flavor of their main dishes or bigger foods I would say falls very very flat. The omelette and eggs all lack flavor. Also I got an iced coffee and it was $10. So for unlimited brunch with one non alcoholic drink it was $55+ tax and tip. Also they don't really assist you in ordering the small plates nor do they pace bringing dishes out in a nice sequential way. For example it would be helpful to know before we order that the dips (listed at the end of the menu) are good to order with kabobs from the waiter and that the French toast listed 3rd, is the only dessert item they have for unlimited brunch. All in all the place is beautiful and the dips are good, but otherwise over priced and definitely won't be returning back. read more
