The food was decent. I liked how the crispy the rice gets at the bottom of the clay pot. We got the one with Chinese sausage and minced pork - I liked the flavor but it doesn't seem too worth it for the price. The service wasn't the best. They barely spoke English there, which wasn't the problem. However, I went up to grab my food and asked if this was mine. They nodded yes and then I was confused since the dish looked wrong. Then a random customer went up to our table and stuck her head so close to our food. Then just walked away without saying a word. I think she assumed we took her food on purpose and the workers kept looking at us. It was a very uncomfortable experience. The ambiance isn't bad. There's a lot of seating, and you're inside the 88 marketplace grocery store. There's a kiosk to order as well.

I was craving for clay pot rice while visiting Chinatown so we stopped by here for an early lunch. Ordering was easily done on the kiosk. Food came out pretty quickly after ordering. We ordered a small roasted pig, veggies, and a preserved meat clay pot rice. Everything tasted really fresh and good. However I was a little disappointed the claypot rice did not have any crispy parts on the bottom. Overall a pretty good lunch though. The price was also very affordable.

Ambiance - super casual, great for lunch Service - keep in mind it will take about 15 min for your food to be ready, highly recommend eating there while it's steaming hot Food - meat was well marinated, rice was crunchy

Just the taste of it, super 5 stars, the chinese sausage and ribs claypot rice was sooo delicious, each time I visit Chicago i come to this place, so legit and super delicious, i will come back again and again. The lady at the counter was so sweet, gave me extra soup, the 老火汤 was super good as well, absolutely love this place, i appreciate small restaurants like this bring back my taste memories from childhood and provide quality food.

Hidden inside a Chinese supermarket, this spot is a true gem for comforting and affordable claypot rice. For just around $30, we enjoyed a full meal without needing to worry about tips -- amazing value! We tried the Chinese sausage claypot rice, which came sizzling hot with that perfect crispy bottom layer of rice that makes claypot so special. The sausage was savory and slightly sweet, balancing beautifully with the soy sauce drizzled on top. On the side, we had a plate of blanched Chinese greens with oyster sauce -- fresh, vibrant, and a nice contrast to the rich rice. The meal also came with a simple but warm and satisfying soup, which felt very homey. To top it off, we ordered crispy pork belly, which had that beautiful crunchy skin and tender meat underneath. It paired really well with the dipping sauce provided. Overall, the food was delicious, filling, and reminded me of classic home-style Chinese comfort food. Definitely a place I'd come back to again and again for a casual and satisfying meal.

More of a 3.5 than a 4 but I'll round up because there's potential. We came here for lunch today. You order, bring the ticket to the cashier in the front of the grocery store to pay and bring it back to the restaurant. There's quite a few tables and you can wander the grocery store or bakery nearby to spend the time. Boy got pork spare rib, Chinese sausage and roast pork claypot rice. I'm not a fan of the Chinese sausage because it has that type of cooking wine or alcohol taste I'm not a fan of. I got bbq pork and duck. The duck pieces weren't particularly meaty and the bbq pork wasn't tender. However, I really enjoyed the soup appetizer and the crunchy rice bits with the soy sauce? Delicious. We'll prob come back for only pork spare rib and try out the beef version. They also seem to sell some type of soup or noodle dish.

I love a good authentic clay pot rice. This location is nestled in a supermarket outside of Chinatown. I love how smoky and perfectly crispy the rice is. It is well balanced and comes with a side of soup. It is made to order and you can taste the quality and the freshness with each piping clay pot. There are many options to choose from. My favorite was the one with pork belly. I really enjoyed this location and appreciate the genuineness and hospitality from the chefs.

Authentic made to order Taishan claypot rice can be found in Chicago near the entrance of the food court on the 2nd floor of 88 Market! I enjoyed the tasty and fresh pig tongue claypot rice and the complimentary soup which was perfect for warming me up during this bitterly cold winter. Note there is a 3% surcharge for credit card payments, but for under $15, this meal is great cost performance and is more than enough food to satisfy me. Come early, because it does get packed during peak meal hours.

They have now moved locations to the second floor of 88 Market! The quality remains the same and everything is still fresh and delicious!

Classic clay pot flavors that brings back memories here a Jonny's. Located in the back of a grocery store with many items to choose from as my favorite is the Chinese sausage and pork for $13. Pick a seat and they will bring it to your table. Suggestion to confirm you get the crispiest rice, let the rice sit for a few minutes before pouring sweet soy in your rice. No frills but you get a great meal. Highly recommend and free parking. They close at 7pm but you can sit until 8 as the grocery store is closed at that time.

I had my second delightful experience with claypot rice! They offered complimentary soup, which was a nice touch. The dish was cooked perfectly, and the lady serving was incredibly friendly. She even offered extra soup, although it wasn't needed since the claypot was already filled with plenty of rice and meat. The crispy bottom was especially delicious. Overall, I rate it a perfect 10/10! fyi if you're wondering where's the soy sauce it's in the tea pots you may need to go to a different table to borrow. Also the food really didn't need any extra but I enjoyed it.

The staff did not speak English but they pointed me to a kiosk where I could place my order. I got the combo with Chinese sausage and duck. My bowl took fifteen minutes but arrived very hot and fresh. The sausage was good and the duck was savory. The duck meat was a little tough, and there were bone bits in almost every bite--very unpleasant. The rice tasted great though, albeit a little oily. The best part was scraping off the charred bottom of the rice and enjoying the crunchiness. Next time I'd pass on the duck.

I love Jonny Claypot Rice! It's a hole-in-the-wall food stall located within the Park to Shop grocery store on Canal and they serve some delicious claypot rice with delicious crisped rice at the bottom of the pot, done right! Three of us stopped in to give this place a try with a plan to share our dishes, since this would be the first stop of a Chinatown food tour we were doing with our friend from out of town. There were plenty of menus with pictures by food stall that make for easy ordering. We ordered: * claypot rice with bbq pork and fried pork (comes with complimentary soup of the day) * side of gai lan We came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. I am not 100% of their exact hours, but I know on weeknights their last call for dinner is around 6:30pm. Trust me, my husband and I tried to eat here several times before. We would drive into Chinatown after work and stop in, to be told that were either already closed or had already served their last customers. So a tip for folks wanting to grab some claypot for dinner, come EARLY! We played it safe and came on a Sunday afternoon :) and we were so glad to finally be able to try it. The rice was so flavorful and it's really a no frills place. It's straightforward, you order at the stall and sit down at any available tables. It's self-serve / "fast casual" and oh so incredibly good. I think about going back to this spot almost weekly. Their soup of the day was very flavorful and although I can't put a name to the ingredients in it (maybe someone on the internet / Yelp Community knows), it was so comforting and served in those styrofoam take-out bowls that have such nostalgia for me when eating lunch in Chinatown as a kid. My only tip here is to check the hours and/or come early on a weeknight (no later than 6pm), since their opening hours might change. Plus, you can pick up any groceries on your way out and there are no concerns with parking (for the drivers out there). While it might be harder to get to via public transportation, there are plenty of parking spots in their lot and this store is a lot less crowded than the others right in the heart of Chinatown. Those are wins in my book. You've got to try Jonny Claypot! I'm on IG: @gratuitousgourmande

Tucked into a no-frills corner on the South Side, Dai Yee's looks modest from the outside, but step in after 10 p.m. and it's pure magic. The room is packed with everybody--sneakerheads, nurses coming off shift, club kids, cops, and couples on first dates who somehow heard the legend. The vibe is chaotic in the best way: woks roaring, orders flying, and that unmistakable perfume of sizzling garlic, ginger, and chili filling the air. The food is straight-up stupid good. The Hong Kong-style salt & pepper smelts are crackly, spicy, and gone in 30 seconds. The beef chow fun has that elusive wok hei (breath of the wok) that most places only dream of, wide rice noodles slick with smoky char and tender flank steak. The black pepper beef tenderloin is velvet-soft, glossy, and aggressively peppery in a way that makes you order extra rice just to survive the happiness. The Singapore noodles are bright curry perfection, and the Mongolian beef is saucy, crispy-edged, and borderline addictive. So I decided to try Shang Noodle, which was tucked away on a side street off Grand Ave., just steps from Michigan Ave. It's across from the Nordstrom building, past Labriola's, down some steps and about a block away located on the south side of the street. As soon as I walked in, and I wasn't expecting this but the restaurant was extremely loud and nearly every seat was taken and everybody seemed to be enjoying themself, families, couples and groups. I figured that was a good sign and it signaled to me that the food was probably good! At first, the host wanted me to sit at the bar, which I politely declined because I don't usually sit at bars, also, I was there to eat, not pick up somebody! I noticed a small table open, pointed it out, and he kindly let me take it. No 'tude either! As far as my server goes, she was efficient, friendly, and very helpful with recommendations since it was my first visit and probably because I didn't look like the other customers who were more familiar with the cuisine. She suggested the pot stickers over the hot and sour soup, and the beef Chow Fun instead of chicken Chow Fun. The pot stickers were a little small, but crispy and very tasty. I also asked for some sweet and sour sauce on the side which I'm glad I did because it paired nicely with the pot stickers instead of that plain vinegar sauce they usually serve you. For my main dish, I ordered the char-grilled beef Chow Fun. The portion size was more than generous, and the char-grilled beef had a great umami flavor. A few of the rice noodles were a bit firm, likely undercooked, but overall though it was quite enjoyable. What I appreciated the most about Shang Noodle was the value. $18 for the beef Chow Fun and $9 for the pot stickers felt reasonable to me, considering it was on the dinner menu, the portion sizes were humongous and the restaurant was located on the Near North Side, which is usually quite pricey. I'll definitely be back, though next time I may try lunch instead, or go with friends of mine.
