If you are in the mood for Korean, don't need to drive all the way out to Ellicott City to stand in line at Honey Pig. I head over to Joung Kak and it's smart to make reservations on a busy weekend night especially if you want the BBQ on your table. Otherwise just walk in on a week night and you'll find plenty of seats. It's great for large parties too. Now you're not going to find the fancy marble stuff in Shin Chon (also Ellicott City) but you will find a hole in the wall type atmosphere (but bigger) with a relaxing crowd, lots of Korean families and blow dryers to get your coals hot in the BBQ. The portions are large and with all the pan chan (I always ask for extra cucumber kimchee and wakame (seaweed salad) if you're not all completely starving, the four of us ordered two meat dishes plus a bowl of bibimbap. That was plenty enough for our stomachs to digest for dinner. I love the pork belly and spicy chicken but it's allll good. I like the little Korean yogurt shots at the end of dinner. I think it has enzymes to help break down all the yummy meat. read more

Summary: Best Soups: Kim Chi Jji Gae, Soon Doo Boo Jji Gae (all soups come with a side of rice, or at least these two do) Best dishes: Bulgogi Bi Bim Bap (HOT), K-Style Fried Chicken with Sweet & Spicy Sauce Details: This is a somewhat overdue review. I went to Jong Kak twice and ordered delivery once with Uber Eats. I was 4-star happy every time, so Jong Kak remains my #1 favorite Korean restaurant in Baltimore so far. First, their fried chicken is closest to the authentic fried chicken I had in Korea. The fried chicken is about $23 but the portions are HUGE. About 14 pieces and guaranteed to make at least two people full. The sweet and spicy sauce on the side (75 cents extra) is a must. I must warn that their chicken is quite bony in the sense that every piece has a bone attached to it, so this is not for boneless chicken fans. Second, their soups are very good. I had Kim Chi Jji Gae and Soon Doo Boo Jji Gae, and both of them were delicious. The Kim Chi Jji Gae had small chunks of pork in it which is the authentic version. The flavor of kimchi was strong, which is also good. But the soup was a bit salty for me, so I just poured in a bit of water. The Soon Doo Boo Jji Gae comes with a raw egg which gets cooked in the boiling soup (I would probably ask for mine without the egg next time, the soup was not boiling hot enough and I was a little bit scared the egg would not properly cook). I got the Soon Doo Boo Jji Gae with beef and the beef was ok. Most importantly, the soups come with a free side of rice, which I 100% love love love. It is a MUST to have jji gae and rice together, so I am very happy Jong Kak is keeping it authentic. Third, their hot stone bi bim bap is EXCELLENT. I ordered bulgogi bimbimbap and it had a variety of vegetables (carrots, sigeumchi, bean sprouts, etc.) and a MUST fried egg on top. The surprising part was the nooroongji (scorched crispy rice at the bottom) which was super yummy. The only downside is that the bulgogi was only a handful, but maybe that's because it is to-go. My friends had tofu bibimbap, gal bi bibimbap, and seafood bibimbap at the restaurant and they all liked it. (warning: seafood bibimbap can be very spicy) Last but not the least, service is AWESOME here! The restaurant is very busy when I went (Friday and Saturday) as in all tables are full and more people are coming in or ordering deliveries. Despite all the busy chaos, the staff was really nice as they took orders and brought out the ban chan and food. Why One Star Off: - some beef in my soon doo bu was very tough and I could not chew them (I would probably order my soon doo bu without anything added to it or with kimchi next time.) - my friend had to wait a long time for her jjam pong and it was brought out by the time all of us who got our food way earlier were almost done (I understand that it can be very busy, but it would be nice if all food can be brought out at once or at least within 5 minutes of each other) - too many menu items (they need to cut out items that they cannot do well, so that they can focus on items they actually cook well and are popular and it could likely result in faster service and better food, for example, my friend ordered the squid bibimbap here once and it came out undercooked and was not very good) - no utensils included in my delivery (I don't know if I was supposed to specify that I want utensils included, but I thought that was a basic component of all delivery food...) read more

Don't let the hair dryers and location off North Ave deter you, this place is legit. Went here off of a recommendation from a flag football team mate with two girlfriends. We were a little scared to go in but they welcomed us. We ordered the first combo 1/2 (for 2-3 people) with the Korean BBQ (pork, ribs, beef and chicken). This was my first time eating Korean BBQ so I was intimidated when our waitress Lucy brought out what seemed like 10 small plates. Everything from rice, lettuce, assorted veggies (broccoli, kimchi, sprouts, green peppers, garlic more that I can't think of) and two sauces. Everything was FRESH!! Lucy then brought out the meat and began cooking it on the grill in front of us. The hair dryer was used to keep the charcoal going. Aha! Now I understood why they were on every table. We tried all of the different meats. Delicious and so much food (left overs on deck). Honestly we could have had two more people for all of the food. We added the fried dumplings and those were just okay but that didn't matter because everything else was great. I would like to thank Lucy for being extremely patient and accommodating. She answered all of our questions and we never had to ask for anything. She refilled empty veggies and brought more. Such a sweetheart! We were craving kbbq Saturday after a night out (technically Sunday morning??). Not sure if it was because they were understaffed or whether they were tired because it was 2am, but the service at Jong Kak was absolutely dreadful. The meat is cooked over hot coals, but because the staff didn't stop by to decrease the temp, we had no choice but to stuff our faces with meat, not wanting to burn the meat as we did with our previous batch. Not once did they stop by to assist us with cooking, which I understand is why we are given utensils to take the reins, but even so. Only when we moved the grill off the coals did they come to put out the coals. The few stops they made at our table were to take our order, deliver food, and give us the bill. It's fairly expensive, coming out to be $100 for two meats and two bowls of tofu/soup between 4 people. I am used to ayce, so this was an unpleasant surprise, but that's on me. Later, broham and I discovered that we could have had table top service, AND that their was also a buy three get one free deal for a reasonable price. Bummerization. I wish I would have inquired more. Anywho, we both ordered from the lunch menu, I ordered a beef dish, and my broham ordered the same as me but with seafood. The server stated that both of these dishes were rather popular. The presentation was absolutely beautiful! The bowls were sizzling upon arrival, and everything looked sooo good. What I learned was that the stuff still cooks, mix that thang up, or crispy overdone rice is to be had! Upon first taste, I was slightly underwhelmed. I don't believe that the bowl had much to any flavor. I mean it looked pretty and all, but that is where it ends. I had to add a lot of the sauce to bring about some taste. My brother's bowl looked just as beautiful, but he struggled to finish it, as he felt similarly as me, the bowl lacked flavor; although he did remark that his had a kick to it. I hate reading all these white people reviews about them being confused about what they're eating; this Korean restaurant is not trying to cater to your ignorance: it is proudly serving Korean food and Korean-Chinese food that has a lot of depth and nuance. Their jja jjang myun is amazing. They have gop Jang jigae which is in itself a miracle as not many restaurants do. The kbbq meat here is fantastic and clearly the highlight of this restaurant. We got combo #1 (1/2 portion) and every single meat was unbelievably tender and flavorful-- I wish it came with more! I've been to Iron Age and Honey Pig, but this place has by far the best tasting, tender meat. In terms of portion size, I feel like the 1/2 portion isn't enough for 3 hungry people-- even with the 2 appetizers, small eats, and other complimentary dishes they provide, we were still hungry enough to add another order of the spicy pork belly. Maybe it's because the meat was so good we wanted more, but I wouldn't come here expecting an "all-you-can-eat" kbbq experience because it does start to get pricey as you add more and more. We spent around $45 per person (tax/tip incl.) for combo #1 (1/2 portion), 1 order of spicy pork belly, jalepeno pancakes, and Soon do boo, but we probably still could've eaten more. I'd suggest considering the full portion of the combo for parties of 3 or more. Jalepeno pancakes: nice and crispy on the outside and soft/warm on the inside. After a while it did start to get a bit soggy (naturally), so I'd try to enjoy it right when it comes out! I wish the pancake was a bit spicier, but the slices of jalapeños inside tasted more like green peppers. Soon Do Boo (seafood): this was a bit disappointing because it wasn't as savory or spicy as I hoped it would be. It lacked depth compared to the ones I've ordered in the past at other Korean restaurants. Picked for a book club event, I was excited by the menu! It was sort of hard to find it. Arriving, we thought we were in the wrong place because it looked sketchy (definitely a hole in the wall discovery). They had average city parking-meters free after 6pm-with a small parking lot a short walk away. We had a table of 7, they really squished us- not very spacious. The server was awkwardly quiet-she was quick 'here and gone'-so it took a few attempts to get all the order. For a place that seemed to host a lot of large tables, their staff had very bleg attitude about having to handle large tables. I ordered the tripe/intestine soup. Very fresh, great quality, cooked well, delicious seasoning.The food came out wonderfully quick. They also provided a ton of banchan with my friends BBQ so I got to try some....super yummy with some unique things I haven't had at other Korean BBQs!!! Though, I will say while the sumplings were crispy yum, the seafood pancake was overly bready and needed more seafood. Overall the food was delicious-if you're in the area try it out. But for me the sketchy neighborhood paired with the meh ambiance means I wouldn't drive further for them over another Korean BBQ near me. read more

Really sad to say that I feel like the quality has been declining at Jong Kak. Back in 2018 it was my most visited restaurant of the year. Since then, I think the service has gotten worse and worse, and the food hasn't done much better either. Usually my go-to here are the seafood soonduboo jigae, or the kalbi tang. Sometimes I'll get a seafood pancake, a tang soo yook or a kan poong gi and split it with people. Recently the soonduboo has tasted pretty bland the last couple times I got it. Wasn't really much flavor and it wasn't even spicy despite asking for it spicy. Today I got the kan poong gi and there was barely any meat in the dish. Fried chicken in sweet and sour sauce? More like fried batter. Both of these dishes used to be so good but I'd be lying to myself if I said they were anything but a shadow of their former glory now. The last few times I've been here we've also had a lot of issues with food taking a long time to come out, and sometimes orders even being forgotten. Recently, there's been two times where my friend ordered something and her food didn't arrive after the rest of ours did. We asked about it after waiting for 10 to 20 minutes and then they say they forgot it and it's coming right away. In the end it takes a total of 40 minutes for their food to come out. By the time they start eating we're basically done with our dishes. Really no good excuse for this to happen. So what keeps me coming back to Jong Kak? Maybe it's a mix of the nostalgia, the fact that it's open until 4 am everyday, and the relatively close location. However after these past few experiences I might think twice before coming back again. read more

I love Jong Kak. I actually prefer their restaurant service more than their BBQ but the BBQ is good too! This review is focusing on some of the food we've had out in the restaurant part. The bibimbap is delicious - the rice gets so crispy and is so delicious. Their seafood pajeon is perfection although I wish they'd serve it with a bit more sauce. I've had two of their spicy soups - the pork and seafood - and they are both excellent. I particularly enjoyed the spicy seafood soup- it had a whole crab, mussels, clams, fish, shrimp, and squid and the broth was to die for. Perfect for a cold winter night. Seriously, so good. I've been here multiple times now over the past year, and the quality of food and service has DEFINITELY gone down (the drain). A lot of the food here consistently give me and my boyfriend an upset stomach, especially the soft tofu stew and bibimbap. I don't have any issues with these dishes at Korean restaurants in Elliccott City, the San Francisco Bay Area, and even in Seoul. I've stuck to ordering the soups, but even then they unsettle my stomach a bit. For the service, we're almost always missing water or plates. Sometimes we just eat without plates because we don't bother to ask anymore. Servers are inattentive, unenthusiastic, and uninterested. Still giving three stars, because this is close to our apartment and it is open late. It is still decent compared to the other Asian food Baltimore offers. read more

I love the fact that this Korean restaurant stayed open at midnight. I was at Baltimore for business trip and got done with it at midnight and this is one of the few asian restaurant that was open. Went in expecting some Korean fast food but they had almost everything a good wholesome Korean restaurant would have; from whole varieties of Sojus and sakes, kbbq to soups, hot pots and Chinese Korean dishes. The menu were Huge and it was actually hard to decide what to get. In the end we got ourself some kbbq for 2, Korean pancake and some sojus. They have variety of different brands of Soju depending on the flavors and hopefully you like the brand that you get because it can taste quite different. The soups and banchan taste all fresh which is a big plus. The meats were a bit expensive but it was good amount for 2 and it was good quality as well. I like the fact that they cook on wired grill with fire underneath than a grill because i always like the taste of charcoal on meat as well. Otherwise all their other dishes were all priced around $10 and average good price not to break a bank. I recommend and definitely visit this place again next time! read more

I'll preface this review by saying I have come to associate kbbq with ayce. When kbbq is not ayce, something feels off about the experience. Jong Kak is not ayce kbbq. However, since it is one of the few kbbq spots in Baltimore that I know of, it will definitely appease kbbq cravings. I went with a couple friends recently, and got the galbi, pork belly, cold buckwheat noodle, and drinks. The quality of the raw meat looked good, but I was a little turned off by the amount for the price as well as our waiter repeatedly dropping meat off the grill. Every piece of meat deserves the same amount of respect. The place was smoky since I don't think all the vent fans were operational so if you're into that post-kbbq-meat-on-your-clothes smell, this is the place for you. As a Hopkins undergrad years ago, I remember Jong Kak as known for being the spot in the area to get your kbbq fix if you didn't want to drive over an hour to Virginia. Not much has changed. It is still one of the few kbbq spots in the area which is why my rating isn't lower. However, I feel like if I still lived in Baltimore, my roommates and I would still constantly make the drive to Virginia. read more

It's always a shame when a place that has been so good for so long starts falling off the wagon in various ways, but my last few visits here (especially the last one) have been getting worse. In general, the food is still good, which will keep most people coming back since there aren't any other charcoal-grilled bbq places in Baltimore. The service, however, has fallen off a cliff. I was last here on a weekend right after they opened at 11AM when there was only one other non-bbq table seated and two servers. The service was painfully slow, continued to forget things we ordered (like when we asked for a bowl of rice twice and never ended up receiving it) or were negligent, like ordering 2 bbq items but only getting 5 pieces of lettuce and no sliced garlic+chili pepper until we asked for it, much to our server's annoyance. Even though we were the only bbq table there, the server almost never came to stir our grilled food and even though the charcoal heat was weak, it took them a solid 40 minutes before they decided to address it with a hairdryer. The most annoying thing was that when we asked for something, our server would walk to the sink area, started messing with her phone and then engaged the other server in long conversation, completely ignoring/forgetting what we asked for. It then took 30 minutes after finishing our meal to flag someone down for our check. Our stay lasted about 2 hours for just 3 people. There was also no yogurt drink with our checks which was another disappointing cherry on top. The banchan spread has gotten much worse over the years as they've not included some of my favorite items like oi muchim (spicy cucumber) among other things that used to be available. As a Korean, it's rare finding a great K-BBQ restaurant and I really used to cherish this place, but our friends and I have decided that we'll have to start trying other places a bit further out. I can't really recommend Jong Kak anymore. read more

I really have mixed feelings about Jong Kak. Some things about this place really bothers me - e.g., using hair dryer (I am not kidding) to blow air into the charcoal, ineffective ventilation at the BBQ area, and inconsistent (sometimes rude) services. But I keep coming back here because this is the only legit Korean BBQ place in Baltimore... I will give Jong Kak A+ and full credit for their Thick Fresh Kalbi ($35.95). It is legit slab of high quality meat that is thick and beautifully marbled. It would be a sin to marinate this and not enjoy it as it is. This is our go-to meat when my husband and I come here for dinner - so delicious! As a Korean, I need my meat to have that char and smoky flavor which only comes from grilling meat on top of charcoal. BUT Jong Kak sometimes ruins it with weak charcoal and uses a freaking hair dryer to blow air into this useless charcoal. The sound of hair dryer is obnoxious to begin with and then the hair dryer blows the charcoal bits everywhere and into our food (this part pisses me off so much). One time, there was so much charcoal bits in my rice and soup, I was ready to walk out of the restaurant without paying them. What makes it even worse is the poor and ineffective ventilation... sometimes I can't even see the table at the end of the hall because it's so smoky in the restaurant. They really should get that fixed. Nice thing about this place is that they have a lot of banchan (little side dishes) and they serve Deongjang Jjigae (Fermented soybean paste stew) and Gyeran Jjim (steamed egg in earthenware bowl). This is like a MUST with any Korean BBQ place so well done, Jong Kak. Jong Kak also does Kan Poong Ki (Deep Fried battered Chicken in Sweet and Hot Sauce; $16.95) really well. If you ask them to make it extra spicy, omg it's so freaking good. Be warned that the portion is HUGE (could feed 3 - 4 people for sure)! In terms of service.. I don't get why all the waitresses here do not smile. It just comes off really unfriendly and what pissed me off was one time, my friend from Texas came to visit and I brought him here. My friend is a big dude, 5'10'' and bulky/muscular like a body builder. This waitress comes over and goes "I don't like him. Why does he look so big and angry?". Umm... Did I ask you for your opinion on how my friend looks? First of all, RUDE. Second of all, if I am paying for your food and service, just take my order and treat us like customers. Overall, I do not like the restaurant or the service but I come back here over and over because it's the only legit Korean BBQ with amazing Fresh Kalbi in Baltimore city. Otherwise, I have to drive 30 - 40 minutes (one-way) to go to Ellicott City to find Korean BBQ... I don't want to do that. Probably the best Korean restaurant in the city. My boyfriend and I shared the half portion of Jong Kak Combo 2 (kalbi, joomoolluk, bulgogi, tripe, and brisket). I loved the kalbi, joomoolluk, and brisket, but didn't really care for the bulgogi and tripe. The bulgogi was just like any other bulgogi that you could get at an Asian food court, but the kalbi and joomoolluk were great. We also shared the tangsooyook (sweet and sour pork), which was nice and crispy. The portions were great too. I was a bit disappointed in the banchan (side dishes), as some were pretty bland. Also, the doenjang jjigae (bean paste soup that comes with KBBQ) had no tofu, which it usually contains, so I'm not sure if they just forgot the tofu in that batch. The restaurant has its own parking lot on the side, which is really convenient for its customers. There is also an upstairs waiting area with a bar and karaoke rooms that'll keep you entertained until your table is ready. All in all, this restaurant is pretty good, so I would probably return, and I would recommend waiting for the charcoal grills too! read more

SOOOOOOO GOOOOD! And this comes from someone who eats at Annandale, the Korean town in VA, on a weekly basis. First, they give you a ridiculous amount of banchan, 12 to be exact and they are all delicious. Second, their BBQ meat is fresh and yummy. They also grill the meat over charcoal, which gives the meat a unique smell and taste, much better than the meat grille over gas fire. My friend and I ordered the combo 3 BBQ, which comes with 3 different kinds of pork belly and 2 different kinds of chicken. They are sooooo yummy. Third, order their kim chi ji gae plzzz. I have ordered this soup from many restaurants and this one is the best. They made the soup from special sour kimchi, rather than the kimchi given to you as banchan. Teh soup is tard, very compatible with the meaty BBQ. Last, their service is excellent. The restaurant wad crowded on a Saturday night but we didn't have to wait for a table. Staff comes to grill the meat for us throughout the meal and frequently checks in and fills out cup with water and tea. Loveeeeee this place and will def come back. read more

I've been to this place quite a few times but have always struggled to come up with a review that really captures the experience. This place has a long history and has a niche -- post-party comfort food, pre-party comfort food, food + karaoke. The food is definitely a solid 4+ but in truth the experience requires that I offer a 3 overall. I'm not sure if I just never noticed before, or if it was just especially difficult the last time I went, but it can take an absurdly long time to track down service to get refills or order food. We weren't even brought plates or banchan until the very end of our meal. Hoping things will improve; I'm ready to give this place another chance. read more

This place is the real deal for an authentic Korean experience! The area directly north of Penn Station used to be Baltimore's unofficial Koreatown and although suburban flight has taken its toll a few places still remain and this might just be the best. Don't be fooled by the run-down area it's in now, I've spent several weeks in Korea and this is just like being back. Jong Kak is best if you come with a large group that isn't vegetarian and can get a table with one of the grills in the middle, that way they will grill meats right there and you can eat them fresh off the grill just like in Korea. That being said, everything here is good from the multiple side dishes that you get when you arrive to the main entrees. Once Covid settles down this place will be at the top of my list to go back to. Highly recommend! read more

This restaurant is one of the most authentic Korean restaurants in Baltimore. We had the Korean barbecue on coals. I liked this place because the wait staff does the cooking and not the customers. I liked that we got the appetizers as extras and the steamed eggs and tofu soup. There was definitely enough food for the four of us and I was stuffed. We had the tripe, kabi, bulgogi, thin beef and another meat that was marinated very well. I was skeptical about the area but parked right next to the restaurant. Love love love this place! It is by far the best Korean place there is to eat in the Baltimore area! I come here for many special occasions, holidays, and when friends are in town, and Friday! Lol They use a traditional method of hot coals to cook the Korean bbq meats and vegetables, making the food taste amazing! They also offer a large variety of Korean small dishes, kimchi's, lettuce, and rice all apart of the meal for no additional cost. The group deals are pretty fair, about $30-$40 a person, a little more if you order additional foods and side. There is parking in front of the restaurant and on the side, I've never had an issue finding parking ever and come here often. The staff is very friendly and if you don't know what you're doing they will explain how to order and how to cook the foods. They understand the food can be intimidating at first if you've never had some of the items. I highly recommend stopping here at least once, I guarantee once you try it you'll be back! Also, they have an upstairs Korean karaoke bar, which is must check out! If you've never been it's the best/only way to do karaoke. They do offer a discount if you eat downstairs first! read more

What is the ridiculously jacked up pricing for every day Korean food. Is it because this is Baltimore? Is it because this is the only Korean restaurant within a five mile radius? Is it because there are no Koreans around? I'm so confused. The wait time was way too long for BBQ so we just settled for menu dishes: seafood pajun, bibimbap, soondubu, and a bottle of soju. Uh the total was $50. I could get this for $40 anywhere else... and by anywhere else, I mean NYC, SF, and even Dallas. Should I move here and open my own Korean restaurant? Because I would, just to save the people of Baltimore from paying ridiculous prices for Korean food that costs like nothing. Service is also lacking. By lacking I mean there were three servers for the whole restaurant. WHOLE restaurant including BBQ tables and non-BBQ tables - so like 20 tables. It took us 25 mins to get our bill and then 10 more mins to pay. I just can't anymore. Baltimore, you're killing me with the service. It's not even that I'm a millennial and I need immediate satisfaction (which I do), but this is just crazy. Okay, end of rant. Would not come again. My go-to Korean restaurant in Baltimore city! Jongkak is a breath of fresh Asian air in B'more city that actually really lacks good Asian food. Especially for students without cars that cannot go out all the way to Elicott City. They have a great selection of different types of Korean dishes for individuals as well as for sharing. Their BBQ is pretty good as well. They use charcoal grill, not gas grill. It is not cheap, but I think it is worth what you are paying for. I recommend to try the intestine stew for sharing if you are with a group. I actually thought it was better quality than the one I had in Korea. I would refrain from getting their Japchae- it is not that good and expensive for what it is. Some of their dishes like such are hit or miss, hence the 4-stars. read more

Speaking as a Korean native, it was authentic and it was delicious. I took my parents here, who were visiting from Korea, and they loved it. We got the dwenjang jjigae (fermented soybean paste stew), dduk gook (to celebrate the new year), and soondubu jjigae (my mom's favorite), and they were all so good! Aside: at the back of the restaurant, there is also a poem that says, " ". It was written in memory of high school students who died in a sinking ferry recently. I am so very disappointed with this restaurant and their management. I came to visit my best friend in Baltimore. We called at 3:00 in the afternoon to make reservations for 7:30. I was so excited to finally eat some great reviewed Korean cuisine. When my friend spoke to the front desk they confirmed our reservation for three people as I was finally meeting her boyfriend. Since we were all able to meet up sooner, we called the restaurant to see if our reservations can be pushed up to 7:00. However, when the gentleman on the phone answered he expressed that there were no reservations under that name or time and that they were fully booked. He also asked if we spoke to a man or older lady. when I expressed that we spoke to an older lady, he became defensive and kept accusing me of calling the wrong place (I'm pretty competent and I don't mess with food sooo I know we called the right place). He reported that they were busy and had no availability for us. This is not an acceptable way to treat returning customers. I was beyond excited and then had to find a last minute back up option. I highly suggest that if you choose to eat at this poorly run establishment you call ahead multiple times to ensure your reservations are in correctly. none of us will be returning. read more
