Yum! Glad we saw that this was a place to try in Baltimore! Food: Loved the sauce bar with all the sauce options for your sandwiches, and my favorite sauce for my Pitt beef sandwich was the house sauce! So good! The Pitt beef was cooked medium rare (my request) and was very good! Loved the baked beans (have meat in them and green peppers and just had a good flavor! The fresh cut fries were also good! They also have pickles available too! Hubby enjoyed the triple d sandwich! Service: Service was excellent! The woman who took our order was great at answering questions and made sure we knew what we were ordering! They also have help staff in the dining room refilling condiments and wiping down tables. Also didn't take long for the food to be ready. Ambiance: Picnic tables, table and chairs as well as booth seating available. Not too large of a place but we found seats at noon on a Sunday!
Ok, so I have to say I was WAYYYY excited to come here because they have been featured on so many shows and my little family of 4 was WAYYY disappointed. They did have a variety of BBQ sauces to try out so you can dip your meats with. That to me is always fun when I can try multiple sauces. Meat wise it did not fall off the bone. Now if you have ever been to Texas and had a true BBQ then you know how tender the meats can get. I was hoping for that type of experience but it just fell short for me to be honest. I was left wanting to be raving about it with each bite. They did have a steady flow of customers coming in and dining here and take out. So maybe I ordered the incorrect items. Ordered: * Pork Ribs *Cheese Fries -there's a lot of cheese, I just wished the fries were a bit more crispy instead of on the soft side. *Fish Platter - when I saw this on the menu, I thought it was fried catfish but I was wrong. It was more like fish nuggets. It came with fries which again I wished would be crispy. *Beef Pit Sandwich Very causal atmosphere. I honestly wanted to love this place but just truly like some of the other Yelp reviews of those who dined here who also didn't get the hype. I personally wouldn't come back but if you are curious about Chaps Pit Beef like I am, then I say give it a try. Tips: *Credit card accepted *They have their own parking lot. *Restroom available. *Fountain drink and BBQ sauces/condiments are all on the side for you to grab. *Indoor
One word: YUM! I'm from Texas so I like to think I have high standard for BBQ. This place came recommended by a close friend. This establishment was featured on Guy Fieri's show and has a sandwich named after him. This is side information, but I usually side eye his recommendations because one time I tried a place that he featured and the food was absolutely disgusting. However, this place was absolutely Yum. The staff was friendly and helpful. The cashier lady super cute and was helpful with recommendations. I got the pit beef sandwich with mac & cheese. The mac & cheese somewhat reminded me of the mac & cheese at this place called Luby's in Texas. It was pretty active on a Sunday evening, but the service was really fast. I may be waited 10 minutes or so. An important note is that all your toppings you put on yourself after you pick up your food. I recommend as a native Texan who loves barbecue.
We both had the beef pit sandwich and shared an order of fries and coleslaw. All was delicious!! Shout out to to the employee who was servicing the condiments. I unfortunately didn't get her name but she was AWESOME! She had long braided hair and wore glasses. Kudos to her for being such an amazing hard working employee!! Great music and ambiance too.

Their new location, just a stone's throw from the original humble shack, is a huge upgrade. You get the same iconic food, but now with a much larger dining room that actually makes it easy to bring a group without fighting for space. It's the best of both worlds. Same old school flavor with a more comfortable setup. On my most recent visit, I stuck with my go to. A loaded hoagie absolutely packed with pit beef, corned beef, sausage, and turkey. It's massive, messy in the best way, and exactly what you want when you're craving something unapologetically Baltimore. I paired it with a large order of fries, which were piled high and perfect for sharing. Decided to switch it up a bit and try the Holy Cod fish sandwich too, and that ended up being a sleeper hit. Huge portion of crispy fried cod, topped with fresh coleslaw on a soft bun. Not something you usually go to Chaps for, but honestly worth ordering. Everything came out crazy fast, which is always impressive considering how busy they can get. Quick stop at the condiment bar is a must. Load up on the free pickles, onions, Carolina Gold mustard, and that tiger sauce. The horseradish and mayo combo just hits different on pit beef. Bottom line, Chaps might not be a hidden gem anymore, but it doesn't need to be. It still outperforms most spots in the pit beef game and continues to be one of the best sandwiches you can get in Baltimore.
The old Baltimore classic, stopped by for a quick lunch, it's been a minute since I've been here but still delicious and reliable as usual. The new building is much better than the old especially when it comes to parking. Inside there way more space and easy to order with the new menus. Service here was great as usual, the staff are so chill and welcoming, you really feel the Baltimore hospitality. Ordered my favorite raven sandwich: pit beef, corned beef, and turkey. Came out flavorful and went well with the sauce and onions. Still a great deal for the price. A fill you up kind of sandwich. Always love supporting a Baltimore classic spot.
I get the hype about this place. It's delicious. I had the turkey Rachel with lettuce and tomato (and pickles) and it was fantastic. The onion rings are also so stinkin amazing - best that I've ever had and is a must try. The people are also super nice and quick with their service.
It was all really good. The outside fooled me, because I didn't expect the interior to be so nice. They had two TV's on as well and enough space where you felt comfortable to sit for a while. The pit beef is the bomb! It seems you can get it similar to how you get a steak or any type of beef in terms of how you want it cooked. I got mine medium. It was so tender. The pulled pork was good, but tasted as how you would expect. Similar experience with the ribs. Both were good but the charm is in the pit beef. The Mac and Cheese was so good. Very creamy and the noodles were firm. The menu can be a bit overwhelming. I didn't realize they had that many options, so I would recommend looking at the menu before coming to eat in advance. I felt rushed only because people were waiting in line. The food came fast and the staff were really nice. I would definitely come back again!
Came to try the pit beef sandwich for lunch during the week and had a great experience. The beef sandwich was amazing, so juicy, and I appreciated that we had our choice of doneness level. I ordered the medium. The line moved quickly and the large tables and stools along the perimeter were great for community seating. There's also a toppings bars, with several sauces to choose from, pickles, and more. Overall we're glad we made the trip to come here, it was worth it!
The richwich is delicious tender corned beef, pitt beef, turkey, juicy sausage. The tiger sauce is amazing.
I have not been to Chaps in a while and recently visited after they renovated and my goodness, I did not recognize it! The building is so modern but I did appreciate the small things they kept as the interior decor from the original restaurant. I loved that they inside expanded allowing a lot of people to sit comfortably indoors. The menu is still the same and the food is just as good as it was before!
I rolled up to Chaos Pit Beef near Essex ready to finally try Baltimore's infamous pit beef. Big mistake. I loaded up my sandwich with tiger sauce, but right away--no white onions available. The sauce station was a disaster, empty pumps and sticky mess everywhere. When I told the staff we were out of sauce, they literally just said "pump faster." Cool, thanks. Here's the real problem though: the beef was completely flavorless. Like, shockingly bland. No seasoning, no smoke, nothing. For a place that supposedly specializes in pit beef, how do you mess up the main ingredient that badly? The horseradish sauce had some bite to it, but it can't save meat that tastes like nothing. I don't get the hype. Maybe I caught them on a terrible day, but when your signature item is this underwhelming, something's wrong. If you actually care about flavor, save your money and go literally anywhere else. Baltimore has better pit beef than this.
Delicious and fast food. Had a beef sandwich with provolone, fries with gravy, Mac and cheese and banana pudding. All were great!

I travel to Baltimore often for work, and when two completely separate people tell me I need to eat somewhere, eventually I'm going to listen. In the case of Chaps Pit Beef, I've now listened twice. First, the setting deserves its own star. There's something wonderfully Baltimore about pulling into a place famous across the country for pit beef, sharing the immediate surroundings with a strip club, and knowing you can shop for used tires across the street when you're finished. Add the walls of awards, television appearances, photos and decades of accumulated lore inside and the whole thing feels less like stopping for lunch and more like making a small pilgrimage. And that's part of why I'm struggling with Chaps. I've tried several of the sandwiches across my two visits. I've piled on the raw onions, pickles and sauces. I've ordered too much--which feels both heroic and completely appropriate here--and walked away convinced that Chaps is very good. But I haven't found my five-star Chaps order yet. The pit beef itself is clearly the reason for the pilgrimage, and the condiment station is part of the experience. Beef, raw onion and that horseradish-heavy Tiger Sauce is a combination I could happily keep attacking. But then you look around at the menu and realize you've barely scratched the surface: beef, sausage, corned beef, turkey, enormous combinations of all of the above, gravy fries, homemade sides and sandwiches carrying names and reputations of their own. It's almost overwhelming. That's ultimately why I'm leaving Chaps at four stars--for now. There's a five-star experience hiding here. I can feel it. I'm just not convinced I've ordered it yet. Next visit I'm stripping this thing back before building it up again: pit beef medium-rare, raw onion and Tiger Sauce as the control. Then I'm going in the opposite direction with one of the ridiculous combinations--probably Guy's DDD--and finally giving the gravy fries their proper opportunity. If that unlocks what generations of Baltimoreans and seemingly every food television personality already know, I'll happily come back here and move this to five stars. If after three visits I'm still admiring the institution more than craving the food, maybe it moves the other direction. For now: Chaps is absolutely worth the stop. The food is good, the history is real, and the atmosphere couldn't be manufactured if someone tried. I just haven't cracked the code yet. Four stars, with one more trip pending. read more

The restaurant was spacious and very clean, with plenty of room to eat in. The prices were fair (with some exceptions), and the order wait times were not too extensive. During my visit I got the beef brisket sandwich, an order of mac and cheese, and a banana pudding. The sandwich was moist and delicious, and while the mac and cheese was good, it was extremely small to me, considering the price. The banana pudding was also nice and creamy. The meat definitely seemed to be the highlight of the restaurant! read more

Chaps for the win! Being a Baltimore staple, Chaps delivers. This new location is spacious, refreshing, and offers ample seating. Pricing has increased but it's fair. Menu options consist of a variety of meats and sides. On this visit, I opted for the classic pit beef (medium) and a cornbread muffin. Both were quite satisfying. Service was fast and friendly. Absolutely no complaints. Definitely swing by if you're in the area! read more

Simply put, a great sandwich stop. Pit beef is a Maryland traveler's staple. Chaps is Mecca. More than ample sandwiches. Wings that looked phenomenal (but if you are here only once a year, ya gotta pit beef.) Very clean, very nice attention to details like keeping the sauce counter stocked. Efficient counter service. Great casual setting. We will of course always be back. read more
I have ridden past this place a million times and this was my first time stopping by to try the food. I would say the parking is limited as it's not a big space. You have the option to dine in or carry out. I placed a carry out order for 2 pit turkey sandwiches w/light onions, a side of their baked beans and macaroni and cheese. The service was fast, I waited maybe 10 minutes for my food. The condiments are located in the dining area of the establishment which had TV's to watch the game. Once I got home I was ready to dig in! I enjoyed my sandwich and the baked beans but the macaroni and cheese was a bit on the dry side. You could tell it had been sitting out for a while. While I enjoyed the baked beans, my husband could not eat them as they are made with pork which he doesn't eat. Their menu or website does not mention the ingredients to the baked beans so I found out when I tasted them myself and had to call to verify what was in them. Overall I definitely would return and plan to get different sides. read more

Great lunch spot! It was my first time at Chaps Pit Beef, and it definitely won't be my last. The portions were generous, the price was fair, and for about $20 you can walk out a very happy man. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the mac and cheese was absolutely on point creamy, cheesy, and the perfect side. read more

A Baltimore local told me that if I only make it to one place this should be it. Get the beef sandwich. They have a pretty large menu. Once you see the beef in all its glory on the grill you will want it. I am not sure if I will be in Baltimore ever again. But even if I am close I will uber from DC to visit one of their locations. There is no table service. You order at the counter and then wait for your order. Once you get your food make your way to the condiment area. I mixed Sweet Baby Ray's bbq and horseradish to make a great sauce for the sandwich. Grab some pickles if that's your thing. They are delicious. I wish I could buy them in bulk. All the hype is real! Updating my review after visiting the new building (directly behind the old location). It's clean, well-decorated, modern, and a place you want to sit and eat. The service was also much friendlier, and just as fast and hot. I tried the Chaps Special with added lettuce, tomato, and jalapeños, and it was delicious. Also huge so I ate half and had leftovers. We also tried the Bull Dog and it was great. The mac and cheese side was really good, too. I'll be back to keep working my way through the menu! read more
This is my first time in the new spot. Looks like they moved 50ft to a bigger place. I kind of miss the Divey Charm of the old spot. Place was packed. Cross between locals and food network fans. I've been many times and the Pit food never lets me down. They seem to have added some fried options that seem to slow down the operation. My wife enjoyed her Pit turkey/ham sandwich. I got the Bulldog which featured pit beef (med rare for me) and a sausage link that had a nice kick on a sub roll. read more

What can I say? Interesting. Stopped in traveling from BWI to PA. With high marks and such fame we figured this was a must stop to see what it was all about. I wasn't sure what to expect with it being called BBQ...in Maryland. Being from CenTX, BBQ means something entirely different. Different isn't bad, just had no idea how different it could be. I would call this more like grilling out but that's just semantics. Nothing here is cooked like we are used to for BBQ, it was charcoal quick grilled. Another big difference is when it says sausage on the menu...here that means Italian sausage, really didn't expect that. We tried the regular pit beef sandwich, the Markie which had beef, turkey, Italian sausage. Also tried mac and cheese which was excellent, gravy fries and cheese fries which were also great these tasted just like Storm's hand cut fries covered in that gooey fake cheese deliciousness. The gravy didn't really have much flavor. The sandwiches had good bread and meat cooked well. We appreciated the bar of delicious pickles and thin sliced white onions. There is an array of sauce choices, and the thing is...it needs it. It needs some kind of sauce whether you choose the horseradish based mayo sauce or yellow mustard based Carolina style, or sweet baby rays...it needs something. To us...if it needs sauce...it's not perfect. We embrace trying new and different styles of bbq in all the states we travel to, so this was a good experience. I'd say if you're not from around Maryland...give it a try it is worth at least trying. read more

Chapsssss!!! Y'all know you're wrong for selling this kidney bean tomato mix and having the nerve to sell it as chili. Come on... this needs to be removed from the menu cause ain't no way yall can continue to kick this out your restaurant to the customers. The Raven is a must! Very reasonable priced and staff taking our order was polite. Walked us through the recommended items and took her time to give us the best experience. The size and quality was on point. It looked bland but was pleasantly surprised how good it was without anything. Tiger and bbq sauce was only a plus but great even without it. This seems to be a must visit spot when you are in town. Spacious restaurant and plenty of seating. read more
