My roommate took my fiancé and I to this restaurant. After 1.5 years in Baltimore, I had no idea that amazing and quality Korean bbq was so close to me! The food was amazing. The tables had the ringer to call over the wait staff, just like in South Korea. It's not rude to press the button; especially useful if the restaurant is busy. You can choose between grill or regular table. We chose the grill and order a half order of beef. They grilled the meat for us on the grill. There was an amazing array of side dishes, my favorite part of the Korean restaurant experience. We also order fried dumplings, tofu soup, and hot stove bimbibap. I smelled like Korean barbecue when I came out of that dinner. we had a convention event near by, and it was my first time attending that restaurant. The review online was pretty good but I did not know the hood/exhaust fan does not work. the whole restaurant smell like Korean barbecue, the restaurant environment is shrouded in smoke. You can see the light fog floating with your eyes. Imagine yourself sitting next to a fire pit and the smoke is choking you while you were having dinner. Not a good experience at all. The food is average the servers was slow. I think they might be understaffed, which I'm OK with, but the environment really needs to get improved if they want the customer to have a nice dinning experience. read more

My go-to restaurant when I'm in Baltimore! There is both a barbeque side of the restaurant, which is great for KBBQ lovers, and there is also a normal sit-down dinner side (which is the side I most often frequent). The inside of the restaurant has a really nice ambiance, and the service has always been really quick and friendly. We always order hot tea when we visit, which is a really nice barley tea that comes for free. The last time we went, we got the soondubu jjigae with chicken (you can choose any protein or vegetables with this dish), the chicken hot pot soup, and shared a half-and-half K-fried chicken. The fried chicken was AMAZING and was also a great sharing size--probably splits best between 2-4 people. I've also gotten the boneless sweet and spicy chicken appetizer here which has also been delicious, and splits well between 2-3 people. My go-to order here has always been the chicken hot pot soup, which comes with potatoes, several pieces of chicken within the soup, and a bowl of rice on the side. It also comes in a black clay hot pot, which means the soup is still bubbling when it comes to the table! The banchan here is also always varied and delicious, and there are always tons of options, so you are sure to find something you would like--and the same goes for the menu, it's huge, so there are tons and tons of options. The BBQ side is also great with many options; I personally really enjoyed the spicy chicken barbeque. Probably thus far my favorite restaurant to visit near my college campus. Been a customer for 25 years and will not be returning after the last several visits. The decline in customer service has been appalling. There's some evidence the service reduction is intentional depending on the customers involved. Starting well before the pandemic the servers dramatically dropped in age and it was almost impossible to get their attention for simple items like refilling the water, missing sauces, and bringing the check. The last two visits have been ridiculous. On the penultimate visit I came in with a group of 6 folks and 5 of us ordered the BBQ - none of us Asian. No lettuce was brought to the table until we asked. No garlic and peppers was brought until asked. No rice was delivered at all. I watched the tables with Asians where all these items were delivered with no request whatsoever. On the last visit I came alone and ordered one of the Kalbi stone hot pot dishes which has always over the past 25 years been delivered with a small bowl of miso to pour over the dish. No miso was delivered so I asked. I was told by the young teenage looking woman it was no longer offered. I told her I would pay for it. I was handed a menu with a list of soups all over $10. You are telling me a Korean restaurant does not have a pot of miso on hand to use in preparing dishes in the kitchen?!! If not then the food isn't worth it at all. I told her to pack up my order and I would be leaving. I left her a 25 cent tip for going out of her way to bring me the menu. I will not be back. There have to be better Korean options in the city or western Baltimore/Howard County suburbs and if not I will cross the genre off my list entirely. read more

My friends and I were craving Korean BBQ and we decided to go to JongKak since it was close by. Food- Being Korean myself, I've had my fair share of amazing Korean food, but JongKak did not meet those standards. We ordered galbi, pork belly, and Korean spicy cold noodles (bibim naengmyeon). The meats were good and came with complimentary steamed egg and stew. The noodles were okay as well. No complaints there, but nothing outstanding. There were many side dishes, but nothing really tasted right. Some side dishes were too vinegary, sweet, salty, or soggy. Other side dishes didn't seem fresh-ddukboki (spicy ricecake) was cold. Service- We had several different waiters stop by to cook our meats. Some of our pork belly meat got burnt, making it inedible. Also, one of the waitresses kept dropping some of the meat off the grill and didn't notice. Jongkak may be your best bet if you want KBBQ in the city. Great Korean spot if you want to do the BBQ or just order from the big menu. The area surrounding the restaurant is nothing special but they have a small parking lot and plenty of street parking around the block. The server and all the staff are very friendly and helpful with selecting menu items. I loved what I ordered but would like trying other things on the menu. In addition to the octopus bi bim bap, we got the kimchi pancake to share and it was delicious. I am wimpy with spicy food but the pancake and the bi bim bap wasn't too spicy. My friends both got meat dishes that they really liked also. Definitely would come back! Went on Friday night. It was not very busy, which made the subpar service even more shocking. Waited about 20 minutes before the waiter came out and I could flag him down to take our order. When we finally got the grill and meat, server out the food on using scissors instead of tongs. Asked for tongs, and had to turn the meat with chopsticks as we waited another 15 minutes for the waiter to return with tongs. Jong Kak did not disappoint. We ordered an $80 meat entree that came with four types of meat. I was happy to see that the BBQ was charcoal, not electric, so the heat charred the pork well, giving it a woody flavor. The meat was also tender and sliced thinly with a hint of spice. Wow, Jong Kak, you were really off your game last night and I am not sure why. Four of us came here for the delicious Korean BBQ. There were plenty of servers and it was busy but there is no excuse for the shenanigans that went on here last evening. We were seated right away. Then it took 10-15 minutes to place our order. We had to beg for our drinks, for napkins, for utensils, and for plates. The meat kept burning because the servers were so clearly disorganized, overwhelmed, and unprepared. We finally just started cooking our own meat. But the servers kept taking our charcoal away even though all of our meat was not cooked. It was really, really weird. We finally had to tackle someone to get the check. The food was amazing, as always, but the service was really unprofessional, disorganized, and chaotic. I regret having recommended this as a place for my friends for late night dining following a wedding. Jong Kak was a complete disaster for us. On a personal note, my beef teriyaki was of low quality and simply wasn't worth finishing. My table of 15 was charged for food we did not order and was then charged for food we did order but never received. Our server was condescending at times, especially when we denied we had placed an order, as if it were impossible for him to make an order documentation error at 3am. Due to the lack of initiative taken by staff to help us keep the small surface area as clear as possible while we are, one of our guests had the misfortune of knocking over a piping-hot plate of food onto his lap. The plate and the food remained on the floor, and we received no additional napkins to help clean the mess. To cap off the night, it became obvious that when sorting the bill, the staff couldn't keep their story straight. Once persistent in their accusations that we ordered certain items, they then exhibited doubt and asked us if they should include $60 of food we never ordered and/or ordered and never received. Customers should never be treated like this and it is very hard to believe that this had nothing to do with the color of our skin (a table of young, Black professionals) as other groups seemed to have had much more engaged staff and a higher quality of service. The food is great, I just think the restaurant itself is a bit dated and the service is less attentive here. However, I have ordered pork bulgogi for delivery on two occasions and been absolutely blown away by what I received. Not only was the meal delicious, but they packed up ALL the little sides and sauces, and paid attention to my notes on the order. We ordered an entree and a side to split, but they were very generous with the free banchan dishes that come with every meal, so it ended up being a feast! Great soups. I love the soon doo boo jigae: savory spicy broth with veggies and soft tofu. It's comfort food on a cold day. The beef radish soup is also very tasty. Im really into soup and somehow, their broth is packed full of flavor. The beef radish soup is very simple with just beef and radish in a clear broth but it is so good. I also like their steamed egg. Jong Kak is the restaurant I frequent the most in Baltimore simply because it's the only decent korean restaurant in the city (considering I don't have a car). It's Not the best korean food and not the worst - but glad that The city has this standard korean restaurant to fall back on when I'm craving some traditional korean food -- which is at least once a week. I've tried their jjamppong (spicy seafood nododle spoil), soondooboo jjigae (spicy tofu soup), pork korean BBQ a la carte, nengmyun (cold buckwheat noodle soup), dolsot bibimbap (stone bowl mixed vegetable rice), tangsooyuk (fried pork with honey soy sauce), spicy galbi tang (spicy short rib stew) and yukajang (spicy beef soup with glass noodles). And I have to say, it's always hit the spot and props for being SUPER CONSISTENT with their food - never had a bad dish here. But was it the best korean food I've had in the DMV area? definitely not. But it did satisfied my craving for korean food. The portions are average to larger in size depending on what you order but I've definitely been to korean restaurants where the portion sizes were much larger. I'd say I easily finished an entree here by myself and left satisfied/decently full.Their side dishes (banchan) rotate every time I come and has your standard kimchi, radish, fermented cucumber, potato salad, and bean sprouts. Nothing to write home about. The service can be pretty spotty - even when it's dead empty inside. I feel like we always had to wait 10-15 min for our server if we needed something but luckily each table has a little bell to alert them if you're really desperate. The food like I mentioned before is decent and flavorful and good for what Baltimore has to offer. If it's you're first time, would recommend sticking with the spicy tofu soup (soondooboo jjigae), dolsot bibimbap (hot pot mixed rice bow) or spicy beef soup (yukejang) simply because they are staples on a cold winter day. The prices are pretty affordable, ranging from $10 for vegetarian meals to $15 for meat heavy stews. The location however is very very sketchy - definitely would not recommend walking around the area late at night. I'm am however thankful that Jong Kak is open until 3am to satisfy any late night munchies. Overall, love the variety in the menu but this restaurant is not modern and caters more towards a more traditional/older korean crowd (think...old men smoking cigarettes and drinking soju after a long day of work). Would be nice to have more modern fusion korean dishes on the menu and to revamp the interior since a lot of younger Hopkins students frequent the restaurant. Also the BBQ is way too overpriced and don't think it's worth the hefty price tag - would stick to the entrees if you visit Jong Kak and would suggest venturing to Ellicott City or Annandale VA for a day trip if you want some affordable and bang for your buck KRNBBQ. read more

Located right next to it's more well known counterpart, Kong Pocha, Jong Kak serves solid Korean food in Baltimore. Especially as this city is lacking in its Korean food options, this place can satisfy most of your cravings. I have enjoyed almost everything I've tried here, like the Jjampong and Gam Ja Tang, and really enjoyed the Tangsooyuk. However, the Jjajangmyeon was too sweet for me and not up to par. This is a great late night spot too when you come back from the bars or want to eat and drink. If you are in the mood for Korean, don't need to drive all the way out to Ellicott City to stand in line at Honey Pig. I head over to Joung Kak and it's smart to make reservations on a busy weekend night especially if you want the BBQ on your table. Otherwise just walk in on a week night and you'll find plenty of seats. It's great for large parties too. Now you're not going to find the fancy marble stuff in Shin Chon (also Ellicott City) but you will find a hole in the wall type atmosphere (but bigger) with a relaxing crowd, lots of Korean families and blow dryers to get your coals hot in the BBQ. The portions are large and with all the pan chan (I always ask for extra cucumber kimchee and wakame (seaweed salad) if you're not all completely starving, the four of us ordered two meat dishes plus a bowl of bibimbap. That was plenty enough for our stomachs to digest for dinner. I love the pork belly and spicy chicken but it's allll good. I like the little Korean yogurt shots at the end of dinner. This was my first time eating Korean BBQ so I was intimidated when our waitress Lucy brought out what seemed like 10 small plates. Lucy then brought out the meat and began cooking it on the grill in front of us. The hair dryer was used to keep the charcoal going. Aha! Now I understood why they were on every table. Wanted to try this place out, as I have heard great reviews. Pretty easy to spot from the road, as it is directly across from a housing complex. Extra points for having their own parking lot. Later, broham and I discovered that we could have had table top service, AND that their was also a buy three get one free deal for a reasonable price. Bummerization. The server stated that both of these dishes were rather popular. The presentation was absolutely beautiful! The bowls were sizzling upon arrival, and everything looked sooo good. What I learned was that the stuff still cooks, mix that thang up, or crispy overdone rice is to be had! Upon first taste, I was slightly underwhelmed. I don't believe that the bowl had much to any flavor. I mean it looked pretty and all, but that is where it ends. I had to add a lot of the sauce to bring about some taste. My brother's bowl looked just as beautiful, but he struggled to finish it, as he felt similarly as me, the bowl lacked flavor; although he did remark that his had a kick to it.
