We needed ALOT of salt and pepper. I got eggs, scrapple (which was supposed to be crispy and wasn't) and then crispy home fries which I liked really crispy. The French toast was actually really yummy. The raisin bread looked thick and good but was just normal basic raisin bread. My mom got an omelet and sausage gravy with her biscuit. Didn't go for food. Went late night for drinks and karaoke. After visiting a few years ago we couldn't wait. I don't know what happened when they expanded but the original vibe is not the same. The Jolly Roger is a longtime low-key Italian and seafood restaurant that also serves breakfast. I decided to try something really different and sample a Pickle-tini, made with Absolute Vodka, Dry Vermouth and Pickle juice. This was basically a brined dirty martini. It started with a heavy vodka taste but finished with the pickle juice. I really enjoyed the vodka soaked pickle at the end. If the drink had a little more salt and maybe a touch of a spice, it would be excellent. We then ordered the Jolly's Delight. This is made with lump crab cake, smoked gouda grit cake with a Cajun bacon cream sauce. The crab cake was cooked pretty well with a bit of a crust. The breading to crab ratio was pretty good as well. The grit cake also had a bit of a crust on it, but it was pretty dense and needed a bit of seasoning and was slightly cool in the center. The bacon was a little chewy, but the sauce was creamy, smooth and had a nice bacon flavor. The melted guada cheese was a pleasant touch and when it was all combined it made for a enjoyable bite. The Jolly Roger has a very large menu. The staff was pleasant, and the portion sizes are pretty big. They have a full bar as well. Eclectic and unique, to be sure. But someplace that tries to give off a "we don't try hard" vibe should at least have great food, great service, or comfortable seating. Jolly Roger has none of that. We tried it last year during our vacation and we were frustrated by the very slow service and the luke-warm food coming out in two groups about ten minutes apart. But every place has an off day. So we tried it again this year. We went around 5pm on a Thursday. The wait for a table was not bad. 15 or 20 minutes. However, that was where the positive experience ended. Our group of six was sat in the very back at a folding card table that was wedged up against the karaoke stage next to an exit door and the entrance to what is apparently a hot box smoking room. As we sat in the folding card chairs (perhaps borrowed from a church banquet hall or a recent grad party) we experienced very slow service again. After appetizers finally arrived, we had to ask multiple times for silverware and napkins. The appetizers were complimented by the occasional waft of cigarette smoke when anyone entered or left the smoking room. I'm not against smokers. But perhaps an indoor smoking lounge right next to dinner tables should be rethought. Eventually *MOST* of our dinners came out. Once again, not real hot, and we had to wait more than 10 minutes later for my wife's entree; an antipasto salad. As we waited for my wife's meal to begin eating, the rest of the entrees went from warm(ish) to cold. The remainder of the experience is irrelevant because I believe that I have shared enough. And at this point, we just wanted to be done with our visit. We ate quickly and asked for the check as soon as possible just to cut our losses and leave. Getting our check and taking our money did not, however, take any time. That part they were very quick and attentive to. We love locally owned restaurants in the OBX and know it's a tough business. We pride ourselves in being patient and giving places a break. We had hope that last year's bad experience was just an off night. And that is why we gave it another shot this year. It appears this is just their standard. Kitschy stuff on the walls and a cute story about the history of the building can only carry a place so far. As I said, you have to have at least one thing that's great: Service, food, or comfort. Jolly Rogers has none of these. That's a shame. Because the location, the story, and the theme have the potential to be a must-visit tradition for annual visitors like us. Sadly, It's not. read more

We were out for dinner yesterday evening. No reservations. We arrived and they said 45 minutes. I went in and asked if I can have a drink outside and they said of course but not in the parking lot. We had a few drinks.. bartenders were nice, patrons were friendly. After our allocated time we sat down for dinner. Ordered lots of appetizers and they were all very good. Let me start by saying as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a bunch of smiling faces! They don't take reservations and we had a party of 7, but we were able to sit right down. They had a huge drink menu-highly suggest the Starburst, but if you're looking for something unique, try a pickletini! We got an assortment of appetizers and entrees. Came here on the last night of our trip to OBX in search of quick, cheap food to give us a solid base for the long road trip the next morning. What we ended up finding was one of the oddest places I think I've ever entered. We walked in, and for a moment I thought we wandered into a gift shop. Shelves lined the walls, all jam-packed with tourist trinkets. Once the realization hit that we were actually at a restaurant, we continued to follow the host back towards the bar side, where we were seated. On our way we passed numerous waitresses, all seeming to be older women dressed as a pirate in some way, shape, or form. I gathered pretty quickly that this place moved at its own pace, and was proven right two long hours later when we finally paid and left. Service was lacking. Our waitress was very kind to us, but she struggled to remember things I thought were a given at a restaurant. For example, we were not given silverware, so a friend of mine asked a passing staff member if we could get some for our food. The staff member informed us she was not a waitress, and rushed out the back door to puff a Newport on her dart break. We ended up getting enough silverware for all of us a little later on, and after multiple trips (as our waitress seemed to have miscounted). I didn't find the food very appealing. I ordered fish and chips off of their chapter book of a menu (hinting that the food wasn't freshly prepared), which not only came out looking like Great Value branded frozen fish, but it also didn't match the price from the menu. I expected to pay $11.99 and walked away with a $25 bill. Ridiculous. It also disappointed me the next morning on the car ride home - we scrambled to find a gas station so I could get it out of my system. My friends all seemed to be indifferent about their food; I cannot pass much judgement since I didn't try anything else except for the rubbery, soggy calamari, but I didn't think anything looked particularly appetizing. I think my microwave could recreate most of the entrees we were served. Our night ended with a group of drunk locals waiting around our table grudgingly, as they wanted it for the karaoke that was about to begin. I was more than fine to let them take it; I needed out of that bizarre place ASAP. OMG, thé place is like crazy cool, very unique and original. The services was lousy. The water was un drinkable . I asked for orange juice got ice tea than was told I was wrong. I was told: - oh You are not from here like it's a bad thing. I ordered a grilled chicken burger. The chicken was most likely frozen put on my plate and than in The microwave and brought to me. This is a really eclectic place, and actually pretty large inside with all the different areas. They had Christmas decor all through the front area even in September...so I assume that's their normal thing. They sell a lot of ornaments up front...but one thing they are missing out on is a personalized one for their location which would be great for visitors! We went on a Sunday for brunch in late September, and only had to wait a few minutes to be seated. I had a build your own omelette which was just ok. I did really enjoy the home fries and rye toast that came with it...I think they rye toast was homemade. I also had yummy Frappuccino.
