I wasn't going to leave this a five star, but the saving Grace was the side bar. It was over a hour wait for a table, which they ended up giving away ti someone else. Fortunately we found seats at the side bar and got to order from there. The bartenders were fantastic for as busy as they were. The seafood lasagna was delicious as well. I would definitely go back despite the negatives. I don't remember the band name, but they were good and entertaining. Also a lot of different areas to hang out in. I mean, it's Jolly Ranchers, at least give it a try if you're in town.

I appreciate a good theme, so it was nice seeing how Jolly Roger goes all out with the pirate decorations! The layout of the restaurant is kinda confusing, but the restaurant is huge, and there is even a gift shop inside when you enter. I had their fried shrimp that came with fries and coleslaw. I thought it was decent, but I've had better fried shrimp platters at other restaurants. I am not really sure what is better about how other restaurants cook it, maybe it's the breading? The food unfortunately took about 30 minutes to come out as well. I also think the waiter could've been more attentive, as my boyfriend had to ask for a drink refill instead of her checking up on us and noticing. I still thought this was a good place to eat at, especially if you want to see a cool themed restaurant!

Love this place, visit every time im in OBX. The staff and bartenders are attentive and super fun! The new addition is awesome! Last Sept. they had football on a HUGE projector in the new room, although I have not heard a band to confirm, it looks like the acoustics are really good. The upstairs has pool tables and darts! The Sunday we stopped in, they had a free hotdog and taco bar....free! They also had $1 wings and ribs.... we ordered both and steamed shrimp, everything was so good. I love their shrimp! Can't wait to go back!

Jolly Roger is a 10/10!!! We will definitely come back when we're in town!! The sheet crab soup was to die for!!! The calamari was very fresh!!! Look at the size of this flounder ! The ambiance is really cool! They have it super decorated for Christmas. Also, the server Theresa was amazing! We never had to look for her. The food is definitely fresh and cooked to order .

First time, we had excellent service..Thank You Brendan. I had the steak salad and wow was that amazingly huge. My wife, daughter and her friend had the shrimp scampi. Portions were huge and the three could have shared one entree of Shrimp scampi..LOL. The shrimp scampi was very good, all 3 enjoyed their meal. Garlic toast was awesome. Our server Brendan was fantastic. Thank You . Sadly no room for desert.

Went for Happy Hour, the older bald heavy set bartender definitely didn't know how to be happy. Before I sat down it was what can I get you...anyway.... 1/2 dozen wings mango habanero excellent flavor, just the right amount of crispy...me, next time something hotter!! Dozen shrimp , probably last year's, but large, good flavor served with butter, cocktail sauce and lemon. Most were hard to peel which is why I say last year's catch, plus season isn't open yet. I really thought the bar was going to be loud and packed, busy, but the level of the music was perfect to have a conversation. Prices on the menu weren't bad, parking lot was filling up as I was leaving. Oh live music too!

The owner responded to this review by suggesting that I "don't have good taste." I'll let that speak for itself. I stand by my review and do not recommend this restaurant. Other reviews here reflect similar concerns. Constructive note for the owner: acknowledging customer dissatisfaction is far more effective than a defensive response. When a customer reports a poor experience--including becoming ill--the appropriate response is to address the issue, not dismiss the customer. I'd much rather give a good review than a bad one. But this place earned every word of this. Let's start with the highlight: the drinks look good, and the staff is friendly. That's it. That's the list. Nonetheless, a tourist store, and some sort of pirate themed bar with some guy singing is not a good sign - focus on food not guys dressed like pirates. On to the meal... When I asked about the local catch of the day and was told "salmon and tuna," I should have stood up and walked out. That's not "local" to the Outer Banks--it's basic menu filler. At that point, I knew exactly what kind of place this was, and I ignored the warning. That was a mistake. We started with mussels marinara - I guess they do not know that a nice bread is usually served with this. I had to ask, and then how do you ruin bread (they found a way). BTW, many of the mussels did not even open raising questions about freshness. I ordered the flounder. I can't say with certainty, but it had all the hallmarks of previously frozen fish--mushy, bland, and completely devoid of character. It tasted like nothing, which somehow was still better than the texture. The pasta on the side was an insult to pasta. There's a universal rule that pasta is mean to be cooked al dente. This was cooked well past that point into soft, bloated mush. It wasn't a side dish; it was something to be endured. The sauce didn't help. If it wasn't poured from a can, it did an excellent imitation--flat, generic, and lifeless. I asked about wines by the glass. The server didn't know what they had, and what I was served tasted like the cheapest option available. It undrinkable. And all of this comes at $$ that suggest a far better kitchen than the one actually operating here. As for the full experience: I spent most of the night dealing with what can only be described as a very strong reminder of the meal. Draw your own conclusions. I don't say this lightly, but this place earns my personal "Vomitus of the Month" award--and that's not a category with a lot of competition. Recommendation: Don't go. There are far too many good options in the Outer Banks to waste a meal--and money--here.

The service and food quality was the worst I had ever experienced. Our server ghosted us and put in the wrong order. I got the shrimp & scallop alla vodka and here is what it said I would get " Shrimp & Scallops alla Vodka - Jumbo shrimp & scallops sautéed with garlic and Roma tomatoes in a vodka cream sauce with crimini mushrooms & penne pasta" i got 3 small shrimp, and 6 fake scallops with macaroni pasta and a sauce that was not far from kraft MAC packets.

Really weird and wonderful eclectic pirate-ish decor marks this Italian/seafood restaurant. The staff are nice, the food is good, then you get a pirate hat an eyepatch if you want... And who doesn't want a pirate hat and eyepatch??? Get the captains platter!

This was definitely a big breakfast. We all had about the same food with different variations. Home fries were sliced in rounds, eggs were cooked to perfection, and the bread and bacon were really great too. The decor inside has a lot of knickknacks but it works so well. Outside you can take lots of photos with pirates ‍. Definitely a fun local spot for those morning munchies. read more

This place used to be great! Great vibes, fun karaoke, and surprisingly good food! Came back this year and everything has gone downhill. The redesign has taken away the ambiance, and the food is almost inedible now. What a disappointment. read more

This place was actually really funny. I wasn't expecting to enjoy the pirate theme as much as I did, and when my 2 and 5 year old received a pirate hat and eye patch I couldn't stop laughing. The food was very good. And service was good too! I'm a little claustrophobic so the smaller dining area we sat in was a little bit uncomfortable for me, but I was able to overcome it because the atmosphere just made me happy haha. read more

Ugh... place is just nasty. It's hard to sit down and look forward to a meal when the restaurant is covered in dust , rust and flies. Not to mention the sticky floors. I had to peel my menu off of the table. The guy sitting at the bar used his friggin teeth, his TEETH to open-up a salt shaker. This place is beyond gross! read more

Dropped in for lunch. Excellent service and the prices are awesome. Steak Philly was fresh, real steak on grilled bun with peppers and onions. The fish sandwich was humungous. I normally don't post uncomfortable dinning experiences but here's my 1st for 2024. The ambiance wasn't suitable for cultured folk. I ordered the snow crab dinner. I dug in, then was oversaw and watched on and off as though I was going to run off without paying my bill. The server added later that my order was $52 dollars and he forgot to mention before I ordered. About every 2 minutes ( kid you not) the manager and my Hispanic server kept coming to my table to ask me " if they could get me anything else". My temperament changed after 15 minutes in. I just wanted to enjoy my food without the chronic watching. So there you have it, I paid with. ( cash) $100) bill just to show off and show them I do work for a living. Not happy with this dining experience and I don't expect to return again. Sorry Jolly Roger's but no other patron got as much star attention as I did. My food wasn't great either. My order was cool not warm to enjoy but I sucked up this experience, paid and moved on. read more

The whole place seems a little chaotic (had to wander around to find the hostess, is this a store or a restaurant, is that costumed person an employee or just a big fan, etc). Once seated, service was pretty good. The menu was not what I'd been led to believe from my online visit--way more Italian-inspired things than grill/bar stuff. Even so, what we ordered was pretty good. Fried combo platter with a softshell crab and prime rib with fried oysters. All of the seafood was very good-- very sweet and the breading was nice and light, although it got greasy as it cooled. The price upon ordering seemed a bit high, but we got a LOT of food. We both left a lot on our plates (mostly because we're in a hotel-- if we were locals we would have taken it home). Again, the whole setting threw me off a bit. But it's not bad. If you're in the area it's probably worth a stop. read more

This place is fun to go to, it's decorated eccentrically and there's a lot to look at around the restaurant. The service was good, waitress was friendly and attentive. The food was just your normal breakfast, nothing crazy- I got eggs, bacon, skillet potatoes and a pancake. You get a lot of food for your money. The only thing is I think the place could use a deep clean but it's a busy place so I understand. I think you should stop by and at least experience it because it is fun. Been twice now and I will go back. read more

Service was great! Food was bland. We were told breakfast is much better so we plan to try bfast here. Dinner my little got a pb&j with chips Husband had chicken Alfredo I had crab Alfredo Alfredo was bland and had very little sauce had to ask for more which was an additional $2. We went in for breakfast after hearing it was the best for breakfast. Everything looked sooo much better than it actually tasted. The food was all pretty bland honestly. We needed ALOT of salt and pepper. I got eggs, scrapple (which was supposed to be crispy and wasn't) and then crispy home fries which I liked really crispy. The French toast was actually really yummy. The raisin bread looked thick and good but was just normal basic raisin bread. My mom got an omelet and sausage gravy with her biscuit. The best thing she had was sausage gravy. Overall it was just okay. Not the best, but not terrible. All the food was just REALLY bland. read more

Came for brunch on a Saturday. Staff is brisk not rude but not friendly. Ordered the crab Benedict and Jolly Roger sampler. The crabs is unusually fishy and poached egg had medium hard not runny yolk. In the sampler the baked apples are good S well as the bacon, potatoes and biscuit was good. The rest was meh. The ambiance was good. Probably will not return. read more

The place is awful now! I've been coming for years and all of a sudden the SERVICE IS HORRIBLE! The host sits "locals" first even if they come 45 minutes after you. They said they called and made reservation, but according to the host when I called before coming they said they don't take reservations. The host also said you have to specify if you want a table that everyone can sit at. After 35 years of going there this will be the last. DON'T GO HERE. read more

This was the WORST restaurant we have ever experienced. When we first arrived, and waiting to be seating, the young girl that was going to seat us was talking to the hostess about another waitress and said that waitress had F____ed up by going to the bathroom so they were not seating customers with her. We had our 11 year old grandkids with us who heard her say the F word loud and clear. We waited an hour for our breakfast, watching other tables that came after us receive food. When the food came, it was not ours so they took it to another table. When we finally got our food, it was so bad, we could not eat it. My two over medium eggs looked like little bird eggs. The bacon was tough, greasy and and had to be spit out. Then came the pancakes that were a joke. They were huge and looked like hard cornbread that came out of a skillet. When I decided to taste a little piece, it crumbled and was so dry inside. It tasted so bad that I had to spit it out. I have no clue what it was made of but it was not pancake mix! We kindly shared with the waitress and she was so embarrassed. She said she knew and that the person in the kitchen was very confused and not sure what they were doing. We told her we could not eat any of it and to bring the bill. She said she would see if we could get some $ off the bill since we could not eat it. She came back and said the manger told her to take $5 off our $36 bill. We paid our $31 and gave the waitress a $5 tip. WHAT at terrible experience and a rip off. We will never go there again. This a cool spot to go to the decor is crazy and always something to see. The service is very friendly and quick. before I could blink the waitress was already refilling my coffee. I've never been for their other meal times but I can imagine it's a good as their breakfast! If you love old fashioned diner style food this is the spot . Fat Man Reviews made a quick stop in The Jolly Roger Restaurant for an appetizer while exploring around Kill Devil Hills, NC. The Jolly Roger is a longtime low-key Italian and seafood restaurant that also serves breakfast. I decided to try something really different and sample a Pickle-tini, made with Absolute Vodka, Dry Vermouth and Pickle juice. This was basically a brined dirty martini. It started with a heavy vodka taste but finished with the pickle juice. I really enjoyed the vodka soaked pickle at the end. If the drink had a little more salt and maybe a touch of a spice, it would be excellent. We then ordered the Jolly's Delight. This is made with lump crab cake, smoked gouda grit cake with a Cajun bacon cream sauce. The crab cake was cooked pretty well with a bit of a crust. The breading to crab ratio was pretty good as well. The grit cake also had a bit of a crust on it, but it was pretty dense and needed a bit of seasoning and was slightly cool in the center. The bacon was a little chewy, but the sauce was creamy, smooth and had a nice bacon flavor. The melted guada cheese was a pleasant touch and when it was all combined it made for a enjoyable bite. The Jolly Roger has a very large menu. The staff was pleasant, and the portion sizes are pretty big. They have a full bar as well. The Fat Man says that The Jolly Roger Restaurant is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin. read more

We were out for dinner yesterday evening. No reservations. We arrived and they said 45 minutes. I went in and asked if I can have a drink outside and they said of course but not in the parking lot. We had a few drinks.. bartenders were nice, patrons were friendly. After our allocated time we sat down for dinner. Ordered lots of appetizers and they were all very good. I ordered chicken parmigiana and it was amazing.. I never order that at the beach because it's the beach. I'm very happy with this place. Highly recommend it. read more

The only thing I can say was good was the side salad. The linguine with clam sauce was very bland and it was more pasta sitting a mess of sauce lacking clams. My wife wanted me to try her spaghetti which tasted like tomato paste with meat. My brother in law got steak which he said was just ok . Absolutely a horrific experience. The server told the manager we smelled like marijuana so they wouldn't not serve us drinks. Best part? We don't smoke marijuana. The bar also smelled like complete bleach from the bar fight that happened the night before. Highly recommend NOT GOING HERE. What a nightmare! Incompetent staff and management. As a manager of a restaurant, I would never treat guests the way these people have! steer clear! read more

Eclectic and unique, to be sure. But someplace that tries to give off a "we don't try hard" vibe should at least have great food, great service, or comfortable seating. Jolly Roger has none of that. We tried it last year during our vacation and we were frustrated by the very slow service and the luke-warm food coming out in two groups about ten minutes apart. But every place has an off day. So we tried it again this year. We went around 5pm on a Thursday. The wait for a table was not bad. 15 or 20 minutes. However, that was where the positive experience ended. Our group of six was sat in the very back at a folding card table that was wedged up against the karaoke stage next to an exit door and the entrance to what is apparently a hot box smoking room. As we sat in the folding card chairs (perhaps borrowed from a church banquet hall or a recent grad party) we experienced very slow service again. After appetizers finally arrived, we had to ask multiple times for silverware and napkins. The appetizers were complimented by the occasional waft of cigarette smoke when anyone entered or left the smoking room. I'm not against smokers. But perhaps an indoor smoking lounge right next to dinner tables should be rethought. Eventually *MOST* of our dinners came out. Once again, not real hot, and we had to wait more than 10 minutes later for my wife's entree; an antipasto salad. As we waited for my wife's meal to begin eating, the rest of the entrees went from warm(ish) to cold. The remainder of the experience is irrelevant because I believe that I have shared enough. And at this point, we just wanted to be done with our visit. We ate quickly and asked for the check as soon as possible just to cut our losses and leave. Getting our check and taking our money did not, however, take any time. That part they were very quick and attentive to. We love locally owned restaurants in the OBX and know it's a tough business. We pride ourselves in being patient and giving places a break. We had hope that last year's bad experience was just an off night. And that is why we gave it another shot this year. It appears this is just their standard. Kitschy stuff on the walls and a cute story about the history of the building can only carry a place so far. As I said, you have to have at least one thing that's great: Service, food, or comfort. Jolly Rogers has none of these. That's a shame. Because the location, the story, and the theme have the potential to be a must-visit tradition for annual visitors like us. Sadly, It's not. read more

The food was awful. Service was minimal. Ordered a Tonic water, got club soda so asked the waitress if it was club soda by mistake she said "no" and never offered to change it out, it was club soda... she never wrote down my order of she crab soup which my husband definitely heard me order, so didn't get that. The food - AWFUL! Captain's Platter made my husband radically sick. Came out from everywhere all night.... Stuffed Flounder, crab stuffing was not back fin (not that is was described as that though) WAY over seasoned, something was missing with the flounder BUT the tomato soup poured all over it does not work at all. Terrible food and service. Threw my food away walking out the door.. Will not recommend this restaurant. read more

Let me start by saying as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a bunch of smiling faces! They don't take reservations and we had a party of 7, but we were able to sit right down. They had a huge drink menu-highly suggest the Starburst, but if you're looking for something unique, try a pickletini! We got an assortment of appetizers and entrees. The only meal that didn't quite meet the bar was the crab imperial, a little overdone and not as saucy as usual, but still pretty good. But the star of the show is Nancy, our waitress. She was FANTASTIC. Kept on top of our table and made sure we had everything we needed. Didn't go for food. Went late night for drinks and karaoke. After visiting a few years ago we couldn't wait. I don't know what happened when they expanded but the original vibe is not the same. I would say we were greeted but that wouldn't be the right word. The woman at the door when we entered was beyond miserable and rude to all of us. Not a great way to start the night. Many regulars seemed nice but the staff was short with us. We felt the drinks were extremely watered down. Overall, we would not go back. I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself, my name is Diana, and I am the new manager of the Jolly Roger. I find it so troubling that not everyone has a great experience at our establishment. First may I say, the only way we have of knowing if something is NOT satisfactory is if you say something while you are here.....I think it is so unfair for you to come here for a meal and not get just what you want, how you want it...and then NOT give us the chance to redeem ourselves.......I WANT to know if there is something I can do to make your visit more enjoyable.....Don't like your food? Let me get you something else. Have a problem with your server....let me know before you leave....not weeks later in a bad review. Some people think if they complain that it will reflect in their service/food...this is so NOT TRUE!!!!! Secondly, if you feel you must write a poor review here, at least give us the date of your visit, and if possible the servers name. Otherwise how can we possibly address the situation and correct the problems, so that this doesn't happen again to someone else? The reason for this review is to help others........just slamming us helps no one...not us and not others who are really missing out what myself and many others feel is truly a unique and tasty dining experience. And finally, I really wish that if you did have a bad experience you will try us again on a return visit to let me try to "right the wrong" you have written about. I rarely leave reviews, let alone a poor one but this establishment needs to take accountability for their actions and terrible treatment of a young group of adults. A group of people, 25 years old, went to this restaurant per my suggestion and i was livid to find out how poorly they were treated. Bartenders checked IDs for all of them with VA ids and decided only one of the identical ids were fake (VA is nearly impossible to fake an id due to the elaborate details which any good bartender should know) and when refused service, they wanted to leave. Then the bartenders withhold their ID - which you also cannot do - and called the police. They group waited outside in the pouring rain for the cops to show so the person could get his REAL id back, and you would think the bartenders would be smart enough to pick up on that anyone underage with a fake wouldnt WAIT to get in trouble. The cop then verifies the id and said this was a waste of his time & the bartenders didnt even have the decency to apologize to the group. Instead they ran inside. Management should step up and hold their staff accountable for treating people poorly over a power trip. As a bartender of years, i've seen my fair share of fake ids and you do not treat another human the way they did this group, fake id or not (which it wasnt) I will NEVER recommend this restaurant to someone again, nor will i be back (the place is also dirty) read more

Been going to the Jolly Roger's for 8 of the last 10 weeks that I've been here on the OBX. After a week of caring for my 1 and 4 year old grand-daughters, I like a place to relax and have a beer(and good food). The prices are good and so is the food. You feel welcome and are treated as though you own the place. One afternoon as I finished my weekend walk on the beach I decided to stop by the Jooly Roger's and have a beer. There was some sort of run that day. As I was sitting at the bar a runner came in and sat exhausted at the bar. The bartender gave him a glass of water. Diana came by and offered assistance. He said he needed to make a long distance phone call. She gave hers and he got someone to pick him up. This person had never been to Jolly Rogers before, didn't buy anything, but was treated like their #1 customer. I've since got to know the names of an outstanding bar duel of brother and sister, Jamie and Dee. They are very friendly and patient even when treated rudely. After my Friday night is over at the Jolly Rogers I go to the gift shop to buy my little angels some pirate stuff. That's where I've had the pleasure to talk with Diana. I've seen how she takes care of customers and employees. This is why the employees are cheerful and the customers keep coming back. Why go anywhere else, this is as good as it gets. read more

Me and my dad were trying to find a good place to eat on his birthday. We decided to try Jolly Roger for the first time. Immediately we noticed the awesome 0decorations and the pirates and fell in love with the southern hospitality!! Everyone was so friendly and specifically Diana Lorditch! She played the pirate so well and was so friendly. Me and my dad were taking pictures with the fake pirates and with no questions or anything she just asked if she could take the picture with both of us. She gave everyone her undivided attention and got people out of their comfort zone and made everyone have a great time and laugh. She was the most amazing person there. She just knew exactly what to do and what everyone wanted! The Food was also amazing! Me and my dad had a steak and i had scallops to go with mine. It was cooked to perfection and it was seasoned well and tasted great! We had a blast being there and had good food too! I have only been here for breakfast and late night, so I can't vouch for the lunch or dinner food. Reasonably priced and very good breakfast. It's hearty and homemade - nothing sophisticated about it, just so you don't go expecting anything revolutionary. Friendly service and the homemade wheat bread is awesome. It has all sorts of nuts and seeds in it, if you are into that sort of thing. If you ever find yourself short of cash on the Outer Banks, you can get 2 eggs with toast, plus hashbrowns or grits (or apples I think) for $2.99. Five bucks will buy you that plus coffee and a tip. The place has alot of weird/cool memoribilia, including the above-mentioned Christmas ornament room. It all looks horribly dusty, but I have to say I am allergic to dust and have never had a problem. Late night, they have karaoke or trivia depending on the night. There are cheap beer specials, and lots of local color. It has actually been pretty crowded even when we were there in the fall. I have been going to the Outer Banks for over 20 years, and have eaten at nearly every place up and down the banks. But Carol Ann Angelos' Jolly Roger is my favorite--for a number of reasons: 1) it really is family fare, and fun for all; 2) the meals are very good, especially breakfasts, the dinner and Friday night specials: and 3)Carol Ann knows each and every customer by face and sometimes name since I am one of 15,000 tourists who come down here throughout the year. For me, that personal touch really means something--you are not a stranger to her , if something isn't right, you tell the wait staff and they fix it, and she comes by to see if you are satisfied..with all the fast food boxes and trendy costly eateries opening up, there really is no better place than one where the owner is involved and hands on with the atmosphere, meal preparation and service. read more

My daughter liked the place last year bc they could sing her happy birthday backwards. This trip was extremely bad. Slow, bad food, service lacking. The appetizer was the lone bright spot as crab dip was good. Then it went downhill. The waitress barely checked on us, forgot the pirate gear for the kids, we waited over an hour for dinner, kids spaghetti came with barely any marinara sauce and a solo meatball. The parmigiana cheese was stuck on bottom which I cleaned off to find mold chunks all over, when I let them know they said that's gross and just got a replacement! After I put it on my sons plate! My meal came 20 minutes later, ice cold hush puppies, 6 shrimp and lil bit of crab for $28. Waitress was rushing us out so didn't even ask about birthday song for daughter. The Jolly Roger..whew! Talk about GREAT customer service and good food!! Mmm. My wife and I celebrated our honeymoon in 2010 at the Outer banks. Our dinner at the Jolly Roger was complete with several courses of Seafood and Pasta. The waitstaff was gracious and warm. We really felt special with the attention and generous portions of food. We just came back from our first year anniversary at the same cottage we spent our honeymoon at. The Jolly Roger was again our main dinner spot, and we were treated equally as well with the food and service. Diana, the Host and Manager was wonderful and endearing. Most racist environment ever. Staff expressed racism towards my party due to white couple trying to hold seating even though me and my party was advised that they don't accept reservations and female pointing directly in my son face and trying to take my chair. The owner immediately walked up and asked me and my party to leave without asking any questions and proceeded to side with the racist couple. Most racist establishment i ever seen. Do not recommend this place to anyone unless they want to be racially profiled and asked to leave for being African American. It's sad how racist individuals still exist. We came down to Obx from va for a nice weekend before the madness starts in retail (where I work) service was awesome! We took advantage of the 10 oz prime rib special that had two sides for 9.99. For three people, our bill was 60 dollars(value!) we got three meals, two appetizers, 2 beers and 2 sodas. The calamari was amazing! My sister got one of their specialties the Bloody Mary mussels!! Great place, great food, great atmosphere. Nice to have places that are open off season. This restaurant is a hop skip and a jump from the sea ranch resort hotel. Every year when my sister and I travel to the outer banks for vacation our first stop is the Jolly Roger in Kill Devil Hills. It is without a doubt the best restaurant on the outer banks. Its warm, unique atmosphere is joined with delicious food, great service and fabulous prices. We went for breakfast the first day we arrived and were so satisfied we went back for dinner two days later. The crab omelets and eggs Benedict are simply to die for and the snow crab leg dinner is a great deal. More crab than you can eat and for half the price you end up paying at a buffet. This restaurant is an absolute must if you are in Kill Devil Hills! The food is phenomenal and the fun pirate themed ambiance makes it better! Service is quick in the off season, but in the summer months, sometimes the wait to get in is an hour or more. The food is also high priced, but the large amount of food they give you makes up for the high prices. I recommend the fettuccine Alfredo and the she-crab soup! They also offer discounts for those who are early birds, but be sure to double check your receipt at the end of the meal to make sure you get the discount. This was a great experience! My wife and I left our son with in laws and went out for a nice meal while in Outer Banks NC, and we were treated to a fantastic meal (3 course) during taste of the beach week. I had Pork Osso Bucco and my wife enjoyed the Shrimp Scampi. Our server Candy was excellent and very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and desserts. This place is white trash. They live off of idiots from the north too lazy to go a mile up the beach road for decent food. The restaurant food is disgusting and the staff are pretty much all felons. I wouldn't send my kids to the bathrooms by themselves. If you feel like playing Russian roulette with your dignity, go there after five when they blast terrible music and sling half water rail liquor. Do yourself a favor and scroll to another restaurant. I was there last summer and loved it. had a great lunch, decor was fun, service good. I was excited to go back this weekend and take my husband. the service was good... however, I ate the cream of crab soup, and lasted about an hour after leaving, before becoming violently ill. I didn't eat anything else, so I think the soup maybe sat out too long, and was not very hot when I ate it. bacteria forms quickly I hate to give this fun place a bad review but maybe they just weren't careful with reheating. read more

The Jolly Roger is a true iconoclastic Outer Banks dining experience! Whether you come in to dine for breakfast, lunch or dinner you will not be disappointed. Having grown up on the Outer Banks going to the Jolly Roger has been at least a weekly habit for years that I never want to break. Their seafood lasagna is to die for and when ordering breakfast try the homemade wheat toast, yum! I have to give it 5 stars. My party had dinner at the Jolly Roger the night before the Flying Pirate Half Marathon this year. It was fantastic! The atmosphere was fun, all the waiters and waitresses were in costume, and the food was great! We had a party of 4 and we all tried a bit of everyone's plate...yummy! Lisa took care of us that night and we even got to see here the next morning on the course cheering on all of the race participants with the Jolly Roger pirate crew. We recently went to the outer banks to celebrate our anniversary, and we ate at the Jolly Roger. The food was excellent, our server Becca was on point and very friendly. Diana was very helpful with our meal as well as helping us find a good hotel and other shops we were looking for. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone. We always eat at the Jolly Roger for breakfast every time we visit Kill Devil Hills 2 times a year. We always have a good experience but our experience this morning was particularly pleasant. Our waitress, Diana, was very courteous and friendly and gave 100% excellent customer service. It has always been good, and we definitely won't let this deter us from returning. Ms T had her usual Shrimp basket lunch. The issue was that the shrimp were not cooked through. They were still translucent. We totally understand not wanting to overcook shrimp, but these were not quite done. On the bright side she commented on how good the slaw was. I have been on a kick to try barbecue at restaurants that are not barbecue joints per se, to see if I can find some hidden gems. For example, both Sam & Omie's and Wanchese Marina serve a good barbecue sandwich. Black Pelican, at least on this day, does not. I must say, the serving was huge. This was more than enough for two meals for me. The barbecue was dry and not well flavored. The texture and flavor was more like dried out beef that has been over-roasted. This is not something I would order again here. All that being said, I am leaving the rating for Black Pelican as it is because we have always had good meals here. I accept that it can't be 100% perfect every time and sooner or later we will run into something that is less than stellar. We will continue to return. I just know this not where I will have barbecue and we are sure the shrimp thing was just a one timer.
