This may sound like a hater review, but it is a true story about the Jolly Roger some months ago I started going to Jolly Roger. I've got a lot of good fun times there seeing karaoke, dancing, and hanging out with my friends. One night they came to me and said you smell like trees and I said yeah I bought it right down the street at the store and even though there were 10 people that worked at that near me my first name no one told me you couldn't smoke trees in the back in the smoking area. Everybody saw me doing it. Nobody said anything and there's no sign to say otherwise. So I got banned for 30 days. Then after I came back one night, they told me you smell like trees again and I said oh it's here in my pocket that's what you smell. They said you gotta go. You can't come back till tomorrow. The last incident was two nights ago. The funny thing about it is they started selling weed drinks so they let people drink weed there but they don't want you to come and smell like you've been smoking it when you buy it right down the street at the store I think that's a double standard and it's bad business. I got banned for 60 more days, to tell you the truth I'm kind of happy about it because it is quite boring over there. Every DJ sucks hard and the people judge you put you down and make you feel bad because they're not right in the head. I have been smoking trees for 45 years for me it's not a big deal at all. There's not much to it but to the Jolly Roger, you can drink weed you can eat weed, but you just can't smoke weed that don't make any sense. Even the little gift shop was mostly Christmas. Maybe because it was off season? I don't know but all the Christmas is very misplaced. Smaller than it looks on the outside. Service was good, the waiter was friendly most of the time, however at some points he seemed annoyed (was never aimed towards us, but still made it a little awkward at times). We went in for drinks and appetizers around 4pm. Server was attentive, polite and efficient. Bloody Mary's came in adorable carafe type glass and the flavors were wonderful. Mine also had unicorn stickers, which I loved. Celery and other stuff on top made these drinks home runs and so reasonably priced. We had the big pretzels as our app. I can not tell you how yummy they were.The pretzels arrived super hot and had great flavor. I had the lobster tail which was expensive but since we were on vacation I ordered it. It was burnt, tough like almost needed a steak knife tough to cut it. Had zero taste. I don't know if it was frozen forever or what. My husband had the fried shrimp. They were not crispy but looked like frozen fried shrimp heated in an oven. Both of us didn't feel well that night. Also, I was really jonesing for some lunch, like a sandwich, but they didn't start serving lunch for another half hour when we arrived. My mom enjoyed her omelet. I liked what I ordered. It was simple and good. The bread was also homemade, which was a very nice touch. Our server was extremely friendly. I am giving this place 3 stars because the food is nothing special. This was the WORST restaurant we have ever experienced. When we first arrived, and waiting to be seating, the young girl that was going to seat us was talking to the hostess about another waitress and said that waitress had F____ed up by going to the bathroom so they were not seating customers with her. We had our 11 year old grandkids with us who heard her say the F word loud and clear. We waited an hour for our breakfast, watching other tables that came after us receive food. When the food came, it was not ours so they took it to another table. When we finally got our food, it was so bad, we could not eat it. My two over medium eggs looked like little bird eggs. The bacon was tough, greasy and and had to be spit out. Then came the pancakes that were a joke. They were huge and looked like hard cornbread that came out of a skillet. When I decided to taste a little piece, it crumbled and was so dry inside. It tasted so bad that I had to spit it out. I have no clue what it was made of but it was not pancake mix! We kindly shared with the waitress and she was so embarrassed. She said she knew and that the person in the kitchen was very confused and not sure what they were doing. We told her we could not eat any of it and to bring the bill. She said she would see if we could get some $ off the bill since we could not eat it. She came back and said the manger told her to take $5 off our $36 bill. We paid our $31 and gave the waitress a $5 tip. WHAT at terrible experience and a rip off. We will never go there again. We waited about 30 minutes for a table for four, which is expected for a Saturday morning breakfast, but what we didn't expect was having to wait 40 minutes for breakfast food. During our long wait, we didn't get any updates from our server so it was a bit of a mystery what was taking so long since breakfast usually seems to be quick. Anyway, aside from the super long wait, Jolly Roger was ok. I definitely liked the fun, divey, tacky and eclectic decor. It was silly but fun and seemed totally fitting for a restaurant named after a pirate flag. Also, I will say that prices were very reasonable. I think you can get a basic breakfast combo for as low as $4. Something else I liked about Jolly Roger was that they had lots of sweets you could add on to your breakfast like cinnamon buns and pancakes. Our server was friendly and really seemed to be hustling. So I am wondering if the delays were related to staffing shortages that seem to be plaguing the Outer Banks in general. I normally don't post uncomfortable dinning experiences but here's my 1st for 2024. The ambiance wasn't suitable for cultured folk. I ordered the snow crab dinner. I dug in, then was oversaw and watched on and off as though I was going to run off without paying my bill. The server added later that my order was $52 dollars and he forgot to mention before I ordered. About every 2 minutes ( kid you not) the manager and my Hispanic server kept coming to my table to ask me " if they could get me anything else". My temperament changed after 15 minutes in. I just wanted to enjoy my food without the chronic watching. So there you have it, I paid with. ( cash) $100) bill just to show off and show them I do work for a living.
