The food here is a steal. Typical mom and pop diner. You order at the counter and are given a number where someone will bring you your food. I came here on a whim for brunch. I ordered 3 over easy eggs with sausage. My meal came with 4 pieces of sausage, a side of hashbrowns, and a stack of sourdough toast. The total? $6.50 before tax. Man, that's dirty cheap. I don't know why you give this place less than 4 stars. I also sampled the chili bowl. That thing is real good. Good value. Good food. read more

After church, I purchased a burrito today from John's Place in Brea. I overheard an altercation regarding a customer and an employee. I though John's Place was a Christian company where the customer is greeted kindly. I did inform the manager what I heard was unacceptable, or good for business. The manager's daughter then tried to make an excuse for the employee in question. I did share, taking a business educate class, the employee should not be in a confrontation with a customer and should resolved in a caring manner. The daughter of the manager said, "we will always defend ourselves." I then said, "I don't think I'll be returning", the daughter said "don't"! So, for that I give John's Place an F. The employees need customer service training. But my food was yummy! read more

Been driving by this place for years now, ever since we moved to the area. I have to admit, their "$2 off breakfast burrito" banner has been calling my name for a while now, but I finally decided to get up and go one morning. It did not disappoint. I got the chorizo burrito and did curbside pickup. It did not disappoint. I like how they use a gigantic yet super thin tortilla. The filling (eggs, chorizo, hashbrowns, and cheese) was delicious. As most of you know I have started a quest for The BESTEST BREAKFAST BURRITO in Southern California! I'm taking everything into account - staff, location, parking, cleanliness, bathrooms, counters, cook awareness, Cross-contamination, lighting, ambience. - it ALL matters! I have been here before and like to test and retest places to make sure my initial experience wasn't some sort of fluke. I enjoyed my last meal here. I'm expecting to enjoy this one too! I'm starving! Me and my dog took a 5 mile hike and are ready to GRUBB!! I ordered the BIG Breakfast Burrito - but, added jalapeños, extra side of bacon and refried beans! It was HUGE!! They offer a Salad Bar. It ain't HIGE but it is there for you to take advantage of. It's coolio. On the counter they temp you with Costco Muffins. And I don't care who you are - if you've had a Costco CAT HEAD Muffin - you know they're tasty! HUGE and tasty! They have a Coffee Station at counter so you can fix your morning java the way you want. The place is Clean. Plenty of parking. Although I have never made use of it - there is outdoor patio seating. The Salsas have a kick. The counter staff is very Accommodating when taking special orders. The kitchen is in full view so you can check them out while they prep your grub! I hope you stop by this place. It's not a chain and they do a good job! The burrito was tasty. I have returned. And will over and over again. This update is actually 3 reviews in the making. I couldn't decide on 3 or 4 stars, but decided to go with 4 because we've definitely had more positive experiences than not. The last three times we've eaten there our order has been wrong. It's small things, but this was never ever tease before. Our order has always been wrong when the newer cashier Maria is there. At least I think she's new or newer. The first time was about 2 months ago, we were over charged. After paying I reviewed the recipes thinking $38 was a little higher than normal. When I told Maria, she apologized but then asked "why didn't you say anything?" I did say something it again we'd never had any issues. I ordered the bacon avocado cheeseburger and I didn't get any avocado on it. A few weeks later the same thing happened. My son and I went for lunch and Maria was our cashier again. My son got the corn dog combo. I was surprised that they serve the same foster farm corn dogs that they sell at the supermarket. I saw the cook get the foster farms box or corn dogs. And once agin my bacon avocado cheeseburger didn't have any avocado. Tonight was I did get avocado on my bacon avocado cheeseburger but we didn't get on of drinks and we were charged for it. I'm not sure if this place is under new ownership but I definitely miss the service before. Each time Maria hasn't been pleasant, she's not rude she just seems annoyed at her job if that makes sense. Regular at this place. It's not for nothing this place has been open more than 30 years. Service is usually pretty good. At breakfast, they'll keep your coffee full and at any time of day, the servers will promptly bring salsa, ketchup, Tabasco, etc., upon request. Food is cooked quickly, you never have to wait long. Breakfast is standard fare here. Eggs and whatever, an omelette and whatever, portions are generous and the food is cooked to order. I wouldn't order a burger early in the morning, but YMMV. I wish their bacon was thicker and crispier. Burgers are a favorite here. Can't go wrong with them. I like the gyros very much as well. This is a mom-and-pop kind of diner, where we have sat for a weekend lunch with the whole family many times. If you're on the fence between some corporate chain fast food and this place, all I can tell you is, I'll go for John's Place over corporate fast food every time. read more

Why does everybody hate working here? A breakfast burrito sounded great to help my hangover, so I stopped in after errands for the best in town. When you feel terrible, a scowl upon walking up to the counter doesn't help your already bad mindset. It is like they are mad you came in. I got two burritos to take home, because I figured my ball and chain felt as bad as I did. One sausage and one bacon, with extra sides of salsa. I received a complimentary eye roll for that. The Chocolate Shake is insane!!!! Definitely in the top 5 for my entire 41 years. I also like the gyro combo. Food was good, service was ok. First server didn't understand English so I don't think he was a server, just a host. The second male server was good but didn't realize someone else had already taken our order. A female server came by to check on us later. On our way out to pay the female server instead of inquiring about whether our puppy who is a service dog in training that was inside a fully enclosed carrier that we politely kept covered so as not to disturb other guests because we are still trying to get him used to being in public, she immediately yelled out to us " by the way we know you were trying to hide your dog!" In front of other guests. If she had asked if he was a service dog we could have provided her with a note from his doctor that we keep in the car though technically they are not required to demand proof, only allowed to ask if it is a service animal, which she did not. At no point during our stay did anyone politely inquire about the dog, only this young woman decided it was appropriate to try to embarrass us in front of other guests as though we were intentionally doing something wrong. I love a hearty, convenient, traditional diner with a full menu spread ! Got a huge avocado bacon burger with onion rings, wish I had room for breakfast too... I had to get a box to go. Went there Sunday with family and they advertise to be open until 8:00 pm. We arrived at 7:24 and was told we needed to take the food to go because they close at 8:00 pm. They should advertise they close at 7:30 and not 8. Horrible! The service here is bad, no customer service at all. The cashiers and waiters are rude and not helpful. This place claims to have the best burritos in town, yet I fail to see why they state that. They have the worst burritos in town. The hash browns served with breakfast were raw, super hard and not good at all. I happen to work in food service so I know what I'm talking about. I had to have them remake my burrito because hash browns were gross. And even after remaking it, I still could not eat it, again these are NOT the best burritos in town. Try going to castañedas on beach if you want a really good burrito! I can't stress this enough, DO NOT COME HERE. I would love to talk to the manager of this place. Nice and cute little American/Mexican diner. The place is super clean which is nice, but the food was just okay, very average. Knocked off one star because a side of hash browns here is $4, which is highway robbery for the portion they gave us. Also, the eggs and hash browns both were underseasoned, so another star off for that. The service is good, nothing to complain about there, but I will say the prices here are higher than most other American diners in the area. The line began to get longer and still the young lady behind the counter kept talking and Messing around with the cooks. It appears they don't care about customer service. Scrambled eggs were brown from the grill too hot and eggs cooked too long, ham was ok, but I only got 2 pieces of French toast! Not two slices of bread cut in half, one slice cut in half. It was thick spongelike, greasy, and tough. I don't particularly care for the hamburgers either. AVOID THE STRESS, AVOID THIS PLACE!!! Came in this morning, as it's our usual place for a simple breakfast burrito. This place is always a hit or miss with the staff's attitude. Eh, took a chance ...again since it's close to our home. So food took a bit longer today, no big deal, finally young girl "Jasmine" came with our burritos, and stated she didn't know which was bacon & which was sausage....I kindly asked her to take them back and please find out for us as in the past I've bitten into wrong one and I'm allergic to sausage...her reply was "you can cut them yourself ". She refused to move, so I made my way out anyways. Upon exiting, my knee touched her leg, she said " What the hell? EXCUSE ME?" I said "the f*ck you're going to block me in". Understand that at this point I was highly upset. Now she gets all hung up on one word I used, not her actions, but rather a word. Piss a customer off and what do you expect? I'm not going to stay quiet. As I approached her manager "Maria", I tried to explain the situation, "Jasmine " kept blabbing on the word I used as I'm speaking to what I believe was a manager. Then the audacity of Maria to tell her right in front of my face "Jasmine stop, no matter what you say, she's going to be right, you know that, customer is always right." What? Really? I said " Right or wrong, as a manager you are to de-escalate a situation not escalate it while the customer is in front of you". Now of course, seems as they're in agreement with each other and made me feel like our money that we ever spent here was a waste. Maria however did finally talk to me in a more understanding manner after the fact. She explained how the cooks get upset if such questions are asked from servers so therefore maybe that is why Jasmine didn't ask which was which...ummm okkkaaaaayyyy, I guess. Never will be back nor will I recommend this place to anyone. Food is ok, not the best, conveniently located, coffee is always offered, not worth the hostility you feel from staff. Offerings are large and are portions may be shared. This location has been in business for decades. Offering is quite expansive from "Burgers to breakfast" and many regulars eat at John's as a tradition. Always has a lively crowd---from neighborhood diners to little league baseball teams, cyclists and blue collar workers. Decor is pedestrian and offers comfortable booths. Counter to table service is standard. Worth a visit if in the area. Not in the mood for a fried burger? If no they have a salad bar with healthy offerings. The cook here does a good job. On weekends, you'll find the garage sale set getting ready for a day of bargain hunting with a fill of bacon, eggs and pancakes. You'll also catch the pre or post church goer and the smattering of families getting ready for a weekend's worth of errands and sports. The service is a mix of fast food ambivalence with dine in politeness. It's hard to get a table between 0900-1100 but at least the order line is quick.
