I showed up, sat down and in 5 minutes was told they were too busy and would probably not get to me anytime soon. I appreciate the honesty and probably will not go back for lunch. Thank you.

This hidden gem shocked us! I was looking for breakfast in the Brea area and we happened to stumble upon Harbor Mexican Cafe. Food was amazing!!!! Tortillas were freshly handmade. Rice and beans felt authentic. The carne was also tender and seasoned well. The vibe inside is very cute! Ambiance is important and this spot hits the nail on the head. Service was also very attentive. We cannot wait to come back!!! Highly recommend.

Register bill

Had lunch there today. I ordered two beef hard shell tacos which came with rice and beans. I thought the tacos were very filling and tasted good. The rice and beans were very average. When I got my bill I noticed the cost of the meal was higher than the price listed on the menu. It was not significant but it was higher. The waitress told me that the menus do not reflect the actual cost of the item you order. The actual cost when an item is rung up on the register, not the menu, is the actual cost. I have never experienced that before in any restaurant.

The menudo and Chilaquiles were awesome! Monique's service was excellent! Will be coming back with the entire family soon!

Of all the Mexican food places in La Habra Fullerton area, which you could pretty much throw a rock and just hit one,, that I've been to in my 53 years growing up and living in this area, I love this place. It's small it's family owned. You get chips and salsa when you sit down their mole is outstanding. In fact I can't think of very many places around here that actually have mole let alone really good mole. And my wife and I are about to go for a second time for lunch to try something else. Their food here is good. Trust me if you don't pay attention, you'll miss it, it's small. It's next to some stupid Korean chicken place that's probably already closed down, just don't sleep on this place. I'm telling you it looks like it's in a strip mall full of weirdo Korean food or something I don't know but this place is awesome. Oh and I almost forgot they're margaritas are insane if you come here for nothing else come here for the margaritas and the chips and salsa. I almost don't want to even review this because I don't want it to become crowded but then again I don't want it to close. I want them to get business anyways I'm sure nobody will be going here at the time I go here because I come here in the middle of the day because I'm old and I don't work that much anymore ha ha ha so I go at lunchtime anyways you don't know me but trust me, like I said I grew up here, and I'm not Hispanic by birth but my wife is and she certifies this message.

Quesabirria tacos

Came here recently and had an incredible meal. The albondigas were spot on - tender meatballs in a rich, warming broth that hit all the right notes. The standout was definitely the quesabirria tacos: gooey melted cheese, succulent beef birria, and that amazing consommé on the side for dipping every bite. I also ordered the three beef birria tacos plate with rice and beans - super flavorful and filling. The shrimp and steak fajitas were sizzling and fresh, with perfectly cooked shrimp, juicy steak, onions, and peppers. Everything tasted homemade and authentic. Staff was super friendly, service was quick, and the atmosphere is cozy and family-friendly. Great prices too! If you're craving birria or fajitas, this is the place. Can't wait to return!

Pozole Soup

I wanted something other than Asian food. I was really excited because I haven't had Mexican food in a while. Parking: There's a small plaza, so finding a spot can be a hit or miss. Ambiance/Environment: I looove the decor here. The colors, pictures, and warm ambiance felt like i was transported to Mexico. They have a medium sized space with a decent amount of indoor seating. Service: Shout out to Jenny! She was the only server, and she was courteous, attentive, and efficient. She constantly checked on me to ensure I was still doing good. Throughput was also quick after ordering. Food & drinks: 1. Huevos con machaca - Dry aged shredded beef cooked in peppers, onions, tomatoes, and scrambled with two eggs. They serve breakfast all day! What?! This is similar to an omelette but scrambled and served with beans and rice. I really enjoyed this dish! 2. Pozole - Traditional Mexican red soup with chunks of pork & hominy. Wow .. this is the most authentic pozole I've had in a while. It is served with the usual lettuce, radish, and limes. There was a generous amount of pork and hominy. Sooo flavorful! 3. Quesabirria tacos - I looove quesabirria! Make sure to drench the taco in the consome to give it more flavor. These are their most popular tacos, and I could definitely tell why. 4. Mixed fajitas - Their fajitas are back! This contained a mixture of chicken, steak, & shrimp. This came out on a smoking hot plate. I decided to go with corn tortillas. This was also served with the usual sides of fresh avocado, beans, rice, and salsa. The proteins were cooked and seasoned well. 5. Chile relleno & hard shell taco combination - A chile filled w/ cheese, dipped in a light egg batter, fried, & covered with salsa ranchera & cheese. I ordered this combo with a beef hard shell taco. The chile relleno was sooo delicious! The chile is a green pepper stuffed with cheese and fried. I love how generous they are with the salsa ranchera. This was also served with rice and beans. 6. Campechana - seafood cocktail shrimp, octopus, and abalone. This was recommended to me. This dish became popular through socials. Presentation was on point. This is more on the sweeter side and served with crackers. 7. Mango margarita - I love me some margaritas! The mango flavor definitely came through. 8. Michelada - I ordered this with Corona beer. The spices were on point. Pricing: I absolutely enjoyed everything! Each dish was filled with authentic Mexican flavors!

LA tostada with chicken breast
Mary H.

Delicious Mexican food. I was in the area and I stopped in for lunch. I love Mexican food, but I wanted something light. I tried the LA tostada with chicken. Delicious! Very juicy seasoned shredded chicken breast ( lots of chicken they did not skimp) with lettuce (not just iceberg, like a garden mix) flavorful beans, other vegetables, topped with a big dollop of guacamole and sour cream. All served inside a tortilla bowl. They also brought me chips and salsa. Oh, and that salsa! Just the right amount of heat. The man at the next table liked it so much he asked to buy some and bring it home for his wife. Located in a strip mall. There is a small outdoor patio and indoor seating. The decor inside is bright and colorful, a contemporary Mexican feel. I'm definitely going back to try other menu items.

Filete con Camarones

Harbor Mexican is cozy restaurant in a busy strip mall on Harbor with an authentic menu and nice service. We've been coming here for years and have always enjoyed the food. The free chips and salsa are also delicious and we always get seconds. My favorite is the cocido, with ample amount of tender chunks of beef and vegetables. The birria tacos are also delicious.

Shrimp Fajitas

If you love Mexican food, you need to check out Harbor Mexican Café--a true hidden gem that only locals seem to know about! From the moment I sat down, I knew I was in for a treat. They started us off with fresh salsa and warm chips, and let's just say... I definitely kept asking for more. Now onto the food--LOOK AT THESE PORTIONS! They are super generous and don't skimp on anything. Shrimp Fajitas ($17.99) - Served on a sizzling platter with tortillas, plus a side of rice and beans. The shrimp were juicy, well-seasoned, and had that perfect sizzle! Quesabirria Tacos ($14.99) - Hands down, the star of the show! The meat was incredibly tender, packed with flavor, and paired perfectly with the rich consomé for dipping. Shrimp Campechana ($18.99) - A refreshing yet hearty seafood cocktail with shrimp, avocado, and a tangy, flavorful broth. Menudo Soup ($16.99) - If you love beef menudo like I do, this is a must-order! The broth was rich, comforting, and tasted just like a homemade bowl. Horchata - Sweet, creamy, and refreshing--exactly how horchata should be. If you're looking for an authentic, homey Mexican spot with amazing food and portions that won't disappoint, Harbor Mexican Café is the place to be!

Local favorite alert! Harbor Mexican Cafe in La Habra, CA, is serving up all your Mexican cravings--carne asada fries, nachos, burritos, and their famous birria tacos! But if you're ready to level up your foodie game, don't miss the *molcajete* --a sizzling hot thing of tender meats and bold flavors that's perfect for sharing (or not), served with rice and beans. Service is warm and friendly. The restaurant has a family feel. Add @harbormexicancafelahabra on IG and check for seasonal specials. Support local and swing by this gem for the ultimate comfort food fix.

I'm a fan! We've ordered takeout from here and dined in several times now and it's become a neighborhood fave of ours. Love the enchiladas with rice and beans and if you dine in, you get complimentary chips and salsa! Service is always top notch and takeout orders are always completed really quickly. Parking can get crowded at peak times, but we've never had to wait for a table at the restaurant itself.

Ask the Community - Harbor Mexican Cafe

Is this place closed now? Been trying to call for several days and just passed by the restaurant and the doors were closed?

This place is definitely open. I live near by and we go every 2 weeks or so. When ever I drive by it's open as well.

Is it closed now?

Yes it's closed. The entire strip mall is getting a new facade and is for sale. We spoke to them a few times before they closed and gave them a couple vacant restaurant locations they could relocate to because they did want to reopen somewhere else.…

Are they closed for good?

According to the city of La Habra Planning Commission notes from August 2019, they will reopen with the remodel of the center. Looks like that is happening very soon.

We went during an off time so peak times I would expect a wait. We really blew our diets but it was worth it. We shared a small order of fries topped with chorizo, chipotle mayo, crumbled cheese, and raw jalapeno. It was soooo good and the small order was perfect for two without ruining your appetite. For my entree I had the Navajo taco which was a giant fry bread topped with red chile beef, beans, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and chipotle aioli. This was a true masterpiece of flavors. The fry bread was like a savory funnel cake flavor. Crunchy exterior and fluffy cloud like interior. The beef was melt in your mouth tender. My wife had hers with ground beef, potato, and green chile. They had a lot of different protein choices. Should have stopped at this point but they had a pumpkin pie filling stuffed sopapilla. It was made to order so it took awhile and came out steaming hot. It was served with two scoops of ice cream so it's perfect for sharing. It was pure heaven and we devoured it. Service was great but these ladies were doing everything. Taking orders, cleaning tables, packing up orders, putting final touches on foods, washing dishes. It was crazy yet they always kept a smile on their faces through the chaos. My wife and I cannot wait to try more items on the menu! Worth the drive!
