Super cute, hidden gem of a lunch spot. Perfect garden for sitting outside with a burger or tacos. Ordered the cheeseburger burger, it was above average. Grabbed a soda at the gas station. Will be back to try tacos. Didn't think to take pics. read more

Blink and you'll miss it it is indeed behind a gas station and then down another hallway. But totally legit breakfast burritos made to order. Next time I want to bring some change to play the arcade machines! read more

Outstanding food and friendly service. The gas station has local (as in 2 blocks away) aguas frescas which are super tasty. And the backyard area is a charming place to enjoy your meal. read more

Everything I've had was amazing. Sat outside in open patio and just ate every bite . Don't delay, get there today.

Great Mexican hamburguesa with the crispy charred edges and hand cut fries. This is a hidden gem. Highly recommended! read more

This place was an unreal find. Just sitting in the back of a gas station and you get one of the best burgers in Dallas. Tacos were in point as well. Come on a nice day, the best seating is outside. read more

A rather unique, hole-in-the wall place that shares a building with a gas station. There's only a few seats inside but plenty of outdoor seating. The highlight for me was my burger, the Mexican Cheeseburger, which was a great combination of flavors. The fries were hot & fresh, but too soggy for my taste. It was less than $10 for the burger & fries. The menu doesn't include drinks from what I could tell, so I walked a few feet to the gas station area for a fountain drink, but unfortunately their machine was out of order. This was SUCH an amazing find!! The food was absolutely outstanding and the people making the food were some of the kindest people I have ever met! Definitely worth the try! read more

We ordered the Mexican burger with a bistek and pastor taco. The tacos were so-so but the burger was absolutely delicious. Nice crust on the burger with pico, jalapeños and avocados. I could have eaten two by myself. I'll need to go back and try their other burgers read more

Great little hole in the wall and Easily one of the best places in Dallas to get a burger. I love it

Dang. I can't believe I was today years old when I discovered this place just down the road from my regular auto shop. Just had the absolute best grilled jalapeno and Swiss burger with loaded grilled jalapeno cheese fries. The best burger joints always seem to be the ones tucked behind an old gas station. I would give this 6 stars if I could. Love love love read more

Thank you for the great reviews of a place I would have never found otherwise. Yes, it's in a gas station. Get your drinks from the convenience store before going back. Only a couple of tables inside but they may have more outside. We had the burgers and they were soooo good! The bathrooms were closed, but it was too good to take off a star. Burgers were juicy and fresh and better than most fancy places that claim to be amazing. These truly were! Next time I'll try something different to see what else they do well! Oh, and the workers were very kind to my son with a disability and that is a huge bonus for me, but I can only give up to 5 stars and a big thank you! read more

It's hidden in the Chevron gas station with an entrance in the back. I really wanted this to be better than us was but it was pretty good gas place. Had the double burger and some breakfast tacos and pastor tacos. Burger was ok fries were great. I didn't like the corn tortillas they use so that killed the tacos a little (to tough for me) but it's pretty awesome for what it is read more

Super legit! Small joint inside a gas station- mainly to go, but they do have several tables outside, and one table inside. Gonna be a spot I frequent for sure! Prices are extremely reasonable for lunch time. Tacos and burritos are a must have... extremely authentic and flavorful. read more

I am so happy to say that I live RIGHT next door to this hidden gem. I know the staff personally and they always serve the best food in a timely manner. The Mexican Cheeseburger is top notch and the Quesadillas are yummy too. Not too happy with the bathroom tho. Guys, get that place cleaned up. But I never use it as I order, pick up, then walk home and eat. But seriously tho...this place deserves 5 stars because the guys are just so nice and authentic. You want good food with a good price served by good people...then this is your new spot!!! read more

WOW! A great burger and crispy, perfectly seasoned fries. Definitely in the back of a Chevron station and nothing fancy, but a GREAT burger. Can't wait to come back and try the Mexican food. read more

Johns Backyard Grill - Entrance - Mexican Near Me - Dallas, Texas

Local business with good food is always a hit for me. I have this place bookmarked for a very long time now and last night was the night to visit it finally. I had planned on trying all the different kinds of street tacos they offer. Unfortunately, last night they are out of lengua and pollo. Which means they may be really good and everybody wants a piece of it. I settled for what's only available which is the steak, chorizo and pastor. All of which are satisfying and very tasty. I also ordered a side of fries which is surprisingly great. Yes, it is frozen then fried but whatever seasoning they put on those babies are very addicting. It was great! In fact it was awesome! The taco counter can only accept cash but no worries, you take your receipt to the gas/ convenience store counter and they'd accept your card. You would have to get your drinks at the convenience store anyways so it's very hassle free. I would definitely comeback to try the lengua and pollo. read more

-I just want to say: I LOVE IT! The cheeseburger , the fries and the hot sauce just delicious!! Melty cheese, nice bun, sour pickles that actually kicks it up a notch! Fries are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, very well seasoned! The best thing is the salsa both red and green sauce tasted so good, complimented the fries and the hamburger to a 10th! I will definitely come back for more! -The backyard does need a update but overall really cool place and friendly read more

Had the Mexican burger - really good! Had crispy edges like a smash burger and the cheese/guacamole/pico combo was great. Fries were a bit soggy - but tasted good and were seasoned well. Also tried a pastor taco... meh. Tortilla was a bit overcooked and the amount of pork was pretty underwhelming. But several folks that came in after me ordered tacos so maybe mine was abnormal. It's a pretty small place inside of a gas station, where you could buy drinks and other convenience items. Nice people working there but service was a bit slow... waited over 15 mins. But I'd go back if in the area. read more

Great local place inside a Chevron gas station on Davenport Avenue, next to where I get my hair cut. I hadn't found what I considered a decent burrito since moving to Dallas but John's has the current title. As the only gringo in the place, I hoped that I would get something good and I was right. Tasty flour tortillas, well-seasoned beef and pork with plenty of fillings. The salsa rojas was a little spicy but in small amounts, added another layer of flavor. I will definitely be a repeater and want to try the burgers, too. read more

What a great little neighborhood restaurant. This place is located on the back side of a gas station. It's literally a hole in the wall. They have a mix of American and mexican food. I ordered the mexican burger without a bun. I assumed they'd just pile everything on the plate minus the bun. Instead it was nicely put together in a lettuce wrap! The mexican burger came with cheese, guac, pico, and jalapeños. The burger was incredibly juicy and had a great flavor to it. The meal came with a side of fries that had a really good seasoning on them. The staff here was incredibly friendly. There isn't a lot of room inside so on cold days you're better off getting food to go. They're pretty quick. We waited maybe five minutes for our two meals. Overall prices are pretty cheap. I will definitely return and recommend this place if you're in the area! read more

This is an amazing place! I had forur tacos (two fajitas and to Pastore) on corn tortillas with onions and cilantro.YUMMY YUNNY YUMMY!!!!! For you Cali ex pats out there, they serve the tortillas mission style. I've not he that in Texas and sure have missed it. Their tacos are so good that they rival my other favorite filling station taco stand. I won't mention it's name, but it's on Riverfront Drive if you know what I mean. This is going to save me long drive for when I want to get my taco freak on. Lol. Their patio seems so inviting. But on labor day today it was just too hot to enjoy. I will be back many many times and looking forward to enjoying the patio this fall too. I should mention that they have an extensive menu. I will be back for the tortas as well. read more

We have a weakness for mom & pop shops. This one as a bit of a surprise when we did a quick search in the area for dinner. D Mag says its great & they have the sticker on the door to prove it. First impression is hey, a kitchen in a gas station. It was kinda creepy with some guy in a hoodie playing the video gambling machine, but he was easy to ignore. Rear entry was pretty neat & it would be interesting to come back in the spring when its warmer. Season fries were quite tasty... in fact, I ate more than I should have from the other plates around the table. I got the 3 taco platter with Chick, Brisket, and Pork taco's. All came with corn tortillas, a bit of pico on top. All 3 were good, with the pork being the best. The surprise was the rice that came with the dish... very good. My wife got a chicken burger... very moist, but flavorless. My daughter got a chorizo taco and it was a hit with her. Only disappointment was the salsa... while fresh, had no textures. Looked like someone put jalepano and sour cream in a blender and liquified it. The red sauce was similar with a red chilli. Service was great and they even gave us a small dish of more rice when we asked for me without charging. read more

These really are some of the best tacos around. And they pile on the meat and toppings. The sauces are delicious. So good!!

Update to review below - we came back to Johns after really liking it the first time. I still want to like this place because I'd love to spend time here on a cool spring evening. However, the food did not deliver. Beef and pork tacos both dry and nearly flavorless. Chips and salsa = chips and the taco sauce in the bottles usually used for tacos. The people here are super nice, but I think the food just struggles. This place has great tacos. Really cool outside area to eat. The guys that work there are really friendly and helpful. It is best to go during the cooler weather months because there is limited seating inside. read more

Saw this place mentioned in the D Magazine article so I had to bookmark it. When we found ourselves nearby (ok, not "nearby" but made the hike anyway), we decided to check it out. Based on the Yelp reviews. One thing made me pause; it was raining and I wasn't sure they'd have indoor seating but turns out they do. Now, I gotta say, you will want to come here for the food. Cute little backyard patio, too. Service with a big smile and fast food delivery. Actual plates and cutlery....never expected that. The burger was perfect: nice crust from the flattop, meat wasn't overworked so it wasn't dense. Bun and toppings were fresh and the french fries had a nice little seasoning on them. All for just over six bucks. I'll be back if I'm in the 'hood and looking for a good burger. read more

Okay first off everyone who knows me knows I don't eat at places attached to gas stations..... Well I just found my exception. This place was awesome! I wanted some real Mexican style breakfast, and I got it! I ordered a chorizo and egg burrito my husband a bacon and egg burrito and we inhaled our food! We didn't venture out to the patio cause it was just to damn hot outside....they don't have coffee so just grabbed a cup at the gas station ( the owner was there super nice ) and just sat inside. 2 guys were running the kitchen and both came out to check on us and make sure we didn't need anything else. We will be for sure going back again. Plus breakfast cost us $5.46 ! Now that's what I'm talking about! read more

I came here because I saw they added grilled onions and jalepeños with taco orders and that sounded delicious so I headed over! The shop is located at the back of a Shell gas station. There isn't a lot of parking, so I'm sure finding a spot during normal meal times would be difficult. There's also minimal inside seating, two tables modeled in a park bench and table style. There was a large outside area with tables but I didn't explore. There are many options on the menu: tortas, burgers (including turkey whaaaat), tacos, quesadillas, burritos, chicken sandwiches, etc. They even have a kids menu! I ordered a chorizo taco, a pollo (chicken) taco, and a pastor (pork) taco so I could try all my favorites at other taco restaurants. The wait wasn't long at all, and I took it to go. However, when I got home I saw they didn't include the grilled onions! Needless to say that put a damper on my mood, but all the tacos were delicious and the jalepeño was perfectly grilled. I definitely will return, but I will always check my order prior to leaving now. read more

This particular foray into John's was not quite as successful usual. Of course, Miguel Angel behind the counter was great. But the tacos al pastor were very heavily seasoned with red chili powder, so much so they were a dark scarlet color and kind of drippy and disappointing Usually they're much more simple - seared meat in soft corn tortillas with grilled onions and peppers and fresh cilantro on the side. It was 7 am though, early for tacos al pastor. Going back soon, of course, but I had to take off a star. read more

Well I wasn't in the neighborhood, but I made it on my way home. You'd never guess there's a grill if you didn't see it on Yelp. I had the ultimate cheeseburger and fries.both were fresh and hot. Hands down best burgers in town. Not the best smelling place but food makes up for the faint smell of manure...

I tried the barbecoa, bistec, and chicken tacos. The chicken and barbecoa were good but the bistec tacos were dry. We ordered chips and salsa bu got no salsa with our chips. Not terrible, not great. Just so-so. read more
