Update: I typed the original review while on my cellphone. There were typos that I did not catch. When it comes to donuts in the suburbs, Dunkin Donut is it. After looking for a donut shop other than Dunkin Donuts, Joe Donut popped up in my Google search. I ordered a chocolate glazed red velvet, which was surprisingly good. I also ordered an Oreo crumbled glazed donut. Because it was large and there was glaze and Oreo crumble, I ate it in two settings. I don't know if the Glenview location is a bakery or a bake shop, possibly getting donuts in daily from a bakery location. The donuts were fresh but there seemingly was a limited supply when I went. And I went around 8:45 AM. It may have been that the commuter crowd had bought most of what was available. The location is at a train stop. Nevertheless, if I'm near Glenview and have a taste for donuts, I'II stop by Joe Donut again. read more

I liked this spot a lot! Such a small coffee and donut spot with the perfect set up to get something delicious to eat and drink before the train ride. Service was fairly quick overall given that only one person was working the counter and making the drinks when I visited. However, I got my iced latte and a donut rather quickly! I'll start by saying I love me some donuts! I've been to Joe Donut a few times and have tried them at friends' places and they just fall a tad bit short. I must explain though! I love the variety of flavor options offered by Joe Donut, there really is something for everyone. My reason for 3 starts only, these donuts are on the dry side for me and taste like they've been sitting around for a long time just a couple hours after bringing them home. You definitely have to buy them fresh and consume them right away. If you do, they are pretty good! The double chocolate, maple bacon, chocolate with sprinkles (Celebration is what I think it's called) are pretty good. I wanted to love the Hazelnut/Nutella long John, but it was SO DRY! People love this place. I've tried it many times, but it has yet to wow me. Will I return? Sure, if it's the only option. Will I seek it out or crave it? Probably not! read more

I ordered doughnuts here for my birthday treat to celebrate with my family. The glazed, fruity pebbles, and Apple fritter doughnuts were large portions. Cute mini cake doughnut "cups" on top of the drink cooler - perfect for a little nibble (or for kids). The coffee is full-bodied, rich brew and can take on any of the pastries you want to dunk in - and it's hot-hot-hot. Family favorites are the Joe 1/2 Dozen with a mix of salted caramel toffee almond old-fashioned and coconut cake with show-offs: red velvet, maple bacon, or (blueberry) fritter. The kids insist on the Snickers old-fashioned, Oreo, and cereal-garnished (fruity pebbles). Oh, yes, get some glazed, if you can (you have to go early to get these - they usually sell out). I always get a side-car (aka The Commuter) and give the donut away to share the goodness. If there's a line, be patient. Very cute little shop at the Glenview Metra station. We've tried a few times to get to the shop before it closes because they usually close down once their donuts run out. Waked up and arrived at 8am on the Sunday. There was a constant stream of customers during that time while we were there. We ordered a Joe's Dozen which was 2 short of a real dozen (end total was just short of $15). I particularly liked their pecan fritter - it was HUGE and had good texture. The old-fashioned donuts were great, while the yeast style donuts were pretty decent as well. I've never really been a fan of the old-fashioned before but I'm warming up to them especially how Joe's make em. Usually my default is the yeast glazed. No place to sit, it's mainly a grab and go kind of place. They did have a good daily special of $3 for a donut + 16oz coffee. I'll definitely put on my list of places to revisit. read more

I really like stopping in here for iced coffee and 1 or 4 or 5 donuts on the way in to work! My top picks have been the vanilla old fashioned, red velvet, but most importantly ANY FRITTER YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON! The apple one is gigantic, fresh, and delicious. There are not many small batch donut shops in the area. I've been trying to come here for awhile now and either it was closed when I've passed by or there wasn't anymore. They seem to sell out quickly especially on weekdays, probably because they are so close to the train stop makes for an easy grab before getting on the train. This morning that we came in, it was early and I knew they would not run out this time. It's a small shop, smaller than what it seems, there are no tables inside to sit down on, but a couple outside. We grabbed a 1/2 Joe dozen which is 9 donuts (2 specialty and 7 mixed). We grabbed a nice variety to try. My favorite was the blueberry lemon old fashioned. Yes, believe the hype. Joe Donut has a great selection of delicious donuts, all of which are soft, fresh, and easy on the eyes. As a regular and loyal customer, I tried a variety of flavors and I loved every single one of them. The truth of the matter is, these donuts don't miss! The coconut one is my absolutely favorite - if they have it, I'm buying it. If they don't, I won't hesitate ordering one of their specialities because they're always so exciting to try. I also love their pumpkin donuts come fall time, they are unmatched. Pro tip: try to come in earlier in the morning as they tend to run out of certain donuts quickly (especially their seasonal specialties). The one thing I do want to note, however, is I feel like the staff is not as friendly as they could be. Regardless, the service is super quick, prompt, and you're really in and out of the building. All in all, if you're craving a donut, don't disgrace yourself by going to the Dunkin Donuts across the street. Hubby and I have gotten donuts from both Joe Donut locations. The Niles location is definitely much bigger than the Glenview location and has a larger variety of other food items outside of donuts. There are a few small tables outside of this Joe Donut location if you would like to eat the donuts right on the spot. It's also across from a park and the Glenview library. Usually when we realize we want donuts it is already past lunchtime and most of the donuts are sold out. So far we have tried the pistachio old fashioned, vanilla old fashioned, chocolate old fashioned, Snickers old fashioned, strawberry lemon old fashioned, blueberry old fashioned, oreo, chocolate red velvet, Nutella, maple bacon, and smore's donuts. Hubby has a sweet tooth and has enjoyed every donut we've had so far. I prefer the chocolate red velvet and Nutella donuts over the old fashioned donuts since the old fashioned donuts are very sweet. I think this has to be the best donut shop in the area. They make fresh donuts daily and have a good variety of donuts. With that said, they only have a few of each especially towards the later end of the morning ~9am. What's key about Joes donuts is that it's located walking distance from the Metra Glenview train stop so if you're craving a donut and some morning joe, stop on in for some pure deliciousness. My favorite is either their pistachio old fashioned donut or their traditional glazed donut. Both are worthy of craving and I can't wait to go back. This place is such a gem! It is conveniently located right next to the Glenview metra stop or if you drove there's parking (very limited) right in front of the store. We initially grabbed two donuts, red velvet and sprinkles. We were shocked by the price, it came out to $4! Which is normally how much ONE donut in Chicago cost. The donuts are super yum, I absolutely loved the sprinkle cake donut. So moist and crumbly, I can taste the delicious fat it was fried in, just heavenly. It was so good in fact, I went back and got another one along with a pistachio old-fashioned, and sprinkle wins again! This place is definitely worth a revisit If I'm ever in Glenview again. I went with their sidecar special which is a 16oz coffee and a "usual suspect" donut. I chose the chocolate celebration. The donuts are really good and definitely fresh and made daily. Coffee was solid too. Service was super friendly, fast, and efficient. No indoor seating here, but they have some benches outside. Parking lot is small, but you can park along Lehigh. Definitely worth a stop whenever in Glenview or for a quick breakfast when waiting for the nearby Metra. read more

I tried calling to order a donut birthday cake on a Friday-for a party on Sunday-but they close in the afternoon. So I submitted an email on the website requesting a birthday cake. The website said they need 24 hours advance notice. I called them on Saturday confirming they got the email and/or to place the order within the 24 hour window as-per their website. The lady told me they couldn't do that because they already started the baking for the next day and there isn't enough time. I asked about the website policy because that says 24 hours, and she said that was wrong that they need to change it. I then asked about my email because that was sent within the 48 hour window and she had to call the Niles office. All that to say the information on their website is wrong, they are not responsive to emails and I happily had to go to a different establishment that was happy to help and able to accommodate. read more

After a morning trip to the nearby Glenview Library with our grand-daughter, we came by here at about 10:30am on a Wednesday. There were slim pickings left and we picked up three donuts. They were decent quality for the price. We learned that they open at 5:30am, and a lot of stuff disappears early (like their apparently gigantic apple fritters), and they close up shop when supply is sold out. One morning, the lady attendant said they were done at 10am, whereas regular closing time is 3pm. On opening weekend they had no plans to do so. A while later it became a noncommittal "maybe." A few months later they implemented a sticky bun fritter, so I pricked up hope. I would stop in every so often and innocently ask "So do you guys do an apple fritter too?" Finally, a couple of weeks ago, the answer was yes! They alternate the apple and sticky bun versions. Then it was just a matter of calling ahead a few times until I hit the right day. Vroooom! It was worth the wait. From the sticky bun version, I already knew that Joe possesses a keen fritter acumen. The apple version is even better. Number one, the dough is perfectly yeasty and moist, hitting that perfect spot between soft and firm. Number two, the apple content is through the roof--excelling where even most gourmet fritters fall short. There was a sizable chunk of fruit in almost every bite. This is a solid A fritter, but I have two quibbles keeping it from perfection--cinnamon and sugar. They could stand to bump up the former in the batter and reduce the latter on the glaze. I want a little more spice and a little less sweetness, but that is just personal preference. Overall I am beyond thrilled to have regular, convenient access to a high-quality apple fritter. Nice small coffee shop quick and convenient. Friendly staff. The one young lady is super great at customer service. She remembers the regulars and is quick and efficient! They do have limited supply of donuts and run out sometimes but I think the customers are used to that and come early if they want something in particular. Pretty normal variety of coffee creations and milk options. I like the cinnamon and cocoa shakers - large enough to not need to shake my arm off the get a little sprinkle in my coffee. :) I noticed another location seems to be coming soon at Old Orchard. Nice place and seems popular. I hope they continue to survive through the crazy covid mess! read more

Donuts were tasty but the girl behind the counter was not pleasant and the ghetto rap music playing inside with lyrics filled with profanity was not appealing for a donut shop. Joe Donut offers gourmet donuts. I came here around 9:15 on a Saturday and most of the "special" donuts were sold out besides the s'mores. I was definitely looking forward to trying those flavors and the yeasted donuts. I ended up getting the salted caramel old fashioned, chocolate crumble old fashioned, plain old fashioned, s'mores. The s'mores was probably my favorite. The marshmallow fluff was super fluffy, I wish it was yeasted though. I also really liked both besides the plain old fashioned which I would have been glazed or something because it was almost too plain. After an intense workout on a Saturday morning and knowing that my kids and I are going to have a super hectic day, I decided to stop by Joe Donut and get some sweet treats. The place is very small although I was lucky to still squeeze myself inside instead of lining up outside. I was able to look into the choices while I was waiting in line so by the time it was my turn, easy peasy lemon squeezy! This is basically a take out place and I felt bad for those who got cups of warm drinks because they can't even enjoy those right away. There are a couple of tables and benches outside so maybe when the weather is warmer, it would be nice to enjoy the treats and drinks while they're still hot. The people working behind the counter were fast, friendly and efficient so the line went quickly. As far as the donuts were concerned, they weren't a big hit. My kids and I took turns in taking bites on each of the 6 donuts that I got. These were the Snickers, Salted Caramel, Red Velvet, Fruity Pebbles, Oreo Crush and Smores. For us 3, we liked the Oreo Crush the best but it wasn't excellent. The rest of the donuts were dry and flat. They were nice to look at and drool worthy in pictures ...tastewise, they weren't memorable. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience making it on time to have more goodies to choose from and the service was great. We got our sugar fix which helped us get thru the busy day with a little more sugar to burn...but would I go back for the donuts? I probably would try their hot chocolate someday, since it is walking distance from home but we sure won't be craving for JD in case we want donuts next time. read more

Donuts are great but customer service at 5:30am I can do without. Donuts are a "happy food" and people serving it should have a smile and be able to hold a decent conversation. Recommendation: have a cup of Joe coffee before you serve your first customer and smile. Edit: When I got home I see that "Carrie Ann" put in 3 Oreos instead of 3 S'mores donuts. I drive back only to be told that I never said S'mores. She tells me she is going to have to charge for the 3 S'mores donuts (well I hope so) then rings me up without giving me credit for the Oreo donuts. I remind her about the credit and she tells me she doesn't know how to process the exchange. I asked what the difference is, she uses a calculator and charges me $2.20. I give Joe Donut a solid 3.5+ stars. The plus, because my sprinkle donut ended up being especially fresh and tasty the next day. I love supporting small batch bakeries, because I used to run one back in the day. Joe Donut is the 3rd small batch donut shop on the North Shore I'm aware of. I've now been to all three shops and have my favorites at each one. Donuts ordered: S'mores, chocolate cake, chocolate glazed, salted caramel, sprinkle, and Oreo. Of all the donuts sampled, my favorites were the chocolate cake and sprinkle donuts because they were nice and moist. The other donuts were okay and a tad on the dry side for me. I would like to come back and try one of their filled donuts, but man, you gotta' get there early to get the best pick...which gets me into my next mention. This place is really small. I think they've done a great job with packing a lot into the space. However it was sooooo paaaaacked! Aside from the long double lines, I was amazed at how many servers are making it all happen behind the counter. One team handles the donut ordering and packing in the right lane. After ordering you move to the left line to pay with the other team. Well thought out. The donuts were a little picked over by the time we got up to order, but I imagine they just couldn't keep the case stocked fast enough. I did see lots of racks of donuts coming out. If you come on a busy weekend morning, plan to get in and decide quickly. If you snooze you will mess up the flow. Donuts come in a pizza box! Expect to pay for small batch quality. read more
