After helping my daughter rinse her eyes out, I went up and grabbed my lemonade and the 2 cups I paid for weren't there. I said "I'm supposed to have 2 cups too, can I have them?" There was a new guy who started handing me the cups. The owner - who knew he just blasted lemon juice into my kid's eyes - immediately stepped in and stopped the new guy with "no they have to pay $1 each for those cups. they can have the small ones." I said "I did. I did pay $1 apiece for 2 cups. I paid extra for 2 cups." He then brought over the cups I paid for and said "sorry, this guy just started he doesn't know". That is, he blamed the new guy even though he was the one who made the mistake - the new guy was doing the right thing. I didn't like that he was blaming some innocent underling for his mistake so I said "why are you blaming this guy? you're the one who made the mistake." He said "he was about to give you two free cups!" Which of course he wasn't about to do because I'd in fact paid for him. Even if they were about to give me 2 free cups that would have been appropriate given the fact that he just blasted lemon juice in my pre-schooler's eyes. Anyway, the dude kinda sucked.

Recently, we had ordered a small cake from the Deerfields Bakery in Buffalo Grove, and really loved it. A few days ago, while I was in the Deerfield area, I decided to stop by the Deerfield location for the first time in at least five or six years. This bakery has gone through a nice renovation. It is clean, bright, modern, and pleasant, just like the one in Buffalo Grove, except that it is a lot smaller. Since it was after 4:00 pm when I went, within an hour of closing, some of the shelves were already empty, which is understandable and probably a good sign for the business. Out of nostalgia, I purchased a big smiley face cookie for $3.95. The girl who helped me was very polite and friendly even though I was just purchasing one cookie. That made the visit even more pleasant. However, I would likely get some other baked goods instead next time, as this cookie and its icing were quite hard, and just tasted like a lot of sugar. I am deducting one star mostly because of the parking situation. There are only four parking spaces by the building, once these spaces are occupied, customers have to walk to the parking lot in the back that's diagonal from the bakery, and cross a busy driveway shared with a bank. This can be especially inconvenient when carrying a cake. Since the Buffalo Grove location is much larger and has its own parking lot that makes parking easy, I will most likely continue going to the Buffalo Grove location unless I happen to be in the Deerfield area.

I love this coffee shop not just because Tom's Pastry is great coffee but it's such a nice spot for people watching. I love that you can enjoy a cool breeze as you sit on the patio and just watch Silver Lake go by about their business. The staff is super friendly and attentive with your order and answered my coffee questions. I really like that the coffee shop is so clean you can eat off the floor and the staff look so dapper that it makes the service visually appealing as well. It's just such a well thought out spot with easy seating and (I found) parking pretty easy. read more

I don't know if the Glenview location is a bakery or a bake shop, possibly getting donuts in daily from a bakery location. The donuts were fresh but there seemingly was a limited supply when I went. And I went around 8:45 AM. It may have been that the commuter crowd had bought most of what was available. The location is at a train stop.
