Bakery goods are always delicious. Italian wedding cookies galore! The lemon ricotta cookies are to die for. Cannoli are fresh, delish. Every time I come to maria's, I always have an espresso and it always hits the spot. It's drawn from a very traditional espresso machine. Cooked meals, lunch or dinner, are always homemade, fresh, loaded with flavor and love. Parking is easy on the street or around the corner in the big parking lot. Customer service is so professional and polite and prompt.

Little do folks know it's the best Sicilian food in the area! Look behind you while you're looking at the baked goods the real menu is on the wall. Getting the lasagna is a staple for the house now.

Everytime my wife and I walk around Highwood, we always pass Maria's Cafe. Recently, we decided to finally give it a shot for lunch. We tried their Gnocchi special and it was AMAZING! It melts in your mouth and is accompanied with a wonderful red sauce. They have an enormous variety of pastries that look scrumptious. We tried their cannolis and were so satisfied with how delicious the pistachio and chocolate cannolis turned out. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. There's not much seating, so if you're going to dine in, pick a good time to go during the day.

Stopped in for some hot chocolate and dessert! They were closing but still accommodated us. Hot chocolate was great! Wish they had signs on the desserts because it was hard to know what was what. We got tiramisu, which was pretty good, though more cakey than most of the tiramisu I've had in the past.

Really a hidden gem in Highwood. Maria's Bakery isn't only a bakery. It is one part bakery, one part coffee cafe and one part Italian restaurant. Personally, I think the Italian restaurant is the best part! This good authentic Italian cooking! None of this new age, molecular gastronomy here. Just good Italian food at a reasonable price. All of the classics are great. Best meatball sub in area! Most recently though, I had the Gino's eggplant special. It was a delicious lunch without any bread or pasta! Only problem with Maria's though is that they aren't open late enough for dinner. Yes, they are generally open to 8 but we have walked in as late as 7:15 and been refused service with the reason that the kitchen was already shut down. This has happened on at least two occasions and we have had to leave disappointed. They were none too apologetic about it either.

This cozy old school familial place has that Italian charm you are looking for - sweeping you back in time. The customer service here is just right! From a nice greeting from the bar when you walk in to the server at your table, they make you feel right at home. The food is impeccable! At first we were not sure we would like it, but boy were we wrong! We started off with the duck polpetta - this small plate was absolutely fantastic and the sauce it came with had you scraping the plate for more. (Note though: the menu says THREE and we only received 2...) Our meals came with soup or salad and we each got a salad and soup - the salad dressing was out of this world. The minestrone was just okay. On to the entrees. My date ordered the salmon with a side of fettuccine Alfredo - this was cooked to perfection - so succulent and the seasoning was beautifully topped. I ordered the Veal Modenese - it was so flavorful I am still thinking about it the next day and how I could have it over and over again. Don't sleep on this place - make a reservation sooner then later, it's such a beautiful spot, if you like being taken back to the old time of Italian restaurants.

On my most recent visit one of the employees (the owner's son actually) explained how the game is played and gave me some background on the courts. Kind of like a cross between croquet and shuffleboard. Full bar with the cheapest drinks in town! We had a buffet meal served at the most recent event that I attended. The food wasn't fancy but sill tasty. I really liked the fry bread that they served. Food was served on plastic plates and with disposable silverware. Man, am I glad we got the flyer, because they have since become one of our local favorites! For the longest time, Lou Malnati's was our favorite Chicago style deep dish pizza, but Cansino's is now #1 in town for us. Their cheese blend is soooo creamy, stretchy, and delicious! It's apparently their own in-house blend of California cheeses, and it reminds us of the tasty Wisconsin brick that's popular in Detroit style (possibly a little creamier but less salty). Their tomato sauce is super savory, with a rich herb blend and not too sweet or tart - it's so satisfying! The crust is firm and delicious, and their sausage is leaner than Lou's while having a stronger fennel essence. We still love other Chicago style deep dish pizzas, but Cansino's will be the first on our list when we get a craving. We love onion rings in principle, but are a little particular about how we enjoy them. Cansino's onion rings are excellent - crispy seasoned breading and supple onion slices that are cooked juuuust right. Their fries are also really tasty, and we loved their fried mushrooms. I've tried two of their Mexican style tortas, which were also very good (I loved the fajita style veggies and beans, and the seasoned beef was pretty good). The steak and veggies were excellent, and their bread was pretty good. Next time, I REALLY wanna try their paninos. Their staff is super-friendly, giving us great suggestions of new things to try. The restaurant is always clean and well lit. Prices are fair for the neighborhood. Their preparation times are reasonable, and everything we've ordered was ready on time. There's plenty of parking right in front of the shop, and their front entrance is easily accessible. They're right across the street from the Fort Sheridan Metra Station, so I recommend trying them out if that's your stop. They also have some breakfast items, so it might be a good treat before your morning commute. We're definitely going to be trying more of Cansino's menu, and we'll be sure to add more photos and updates.

Mixed feelings here!…read more Parking - I hate paying for valet when the parking is so close. It's seems unnecessary and excessive. I understand the need in the city as they are typically driving around trying to find a spot or a designated garage for your car. But when someone takes your car and literally pulls it into a spot right behind the restraunt it seems silly. Then when you're ready to leave you need to engage with that person again to pay even though you can see your car right there. It's only $5 for valet but honestly really silly and not needed. I'd understand for the busy nights like Thursday - Saturday. But not during the week. Just let people park please. The food was mixed. We are a little hyper critical coming from living in the city and being overall good cooks ourselves. I'm a sourdough baker and my husband an avid griller. But I'll break down a few highlights below. Appetizers. This was the highlight of our meal. We got the carrots (best), ricotta and lobster dumplings. The carrots were delicious - sweet, carmelized, nutty and cooked to perfection. Whatever you do don't leave without getting those. Ricotta - we liked this as it felt very Mediterranean. However I would have swapped the oregano with zatar and potentially some chopped dates / pistachios. But overall a nice crisp to the sourdough bread and great dipping action with the ricotta. Lobster ravioli - I really enjoyed this as well. Nice lemongrass flavor with a small kick. The lobster is puree so it's not chunky and more smooth. Entrees - my husband got the chicken which needed some butter on top and more juice to soften it up. A little dry. I got the pasta which was good but something a little more unexpected would be nice. Agnolotti? Desert - soft serve was weird. Tasted liked it was mixed with soda. Like it had a tart carbonated flavor. We are dairy dream lovers (Libertyville) so we may have both expectations for soft serve. Service - our waiter was exceptional! Ambiance - too quiet. I hate when I'm seated so close to people that they can hear everything we say. And as a loud nest coaster when I laugh in a silent room it's awkward. So my personal preference is louder restaurants where I can't laugh or speak without my neighbor hearing everything.
