Came on a weekday morning for breakfast with my mom. They have one of my favorite coffees in the city. The service was great - friendly and courteous. We both got avocado toast - one with egg and one without. The bread they use is toasted to perfection and makes it so good. I wish they would put the tomatoes and radish across the entire toast rather than on the side, but it's ok it's probably their aesthetic. You can park on the street and also pick up some other goodies while you're there. I look forward to trying the vegan Chinese chicken salad I saw on their menu recently. read more

I have eaten at Joan's on Third on Third a couple times for breakfast and enjoyed their egg based dishes. I had already eaten breakfast when I accidentally stumbled upon this Joan's on Third which is situated on Ventura Place, a long single street that juts off of Ventura Boulevard that seems to also be an accident. I guess Joan's on Ventura Place doesn't have the same ring to it so I decided to check this joint out. I walked in and immediately liked the concept of this restaurant, market, cafe, almost deli like space. The large area has different sections for each area of the place, with a food counter at the front right and market/deli on the left. The joint has interesting art objects hovering above with many interesting touches around the space. Out front is a row of tables on Third Street, err Ventura Place. Since I already had breakfast and it was too early for lunch, I tried their GF flourless chocolate roll cake. This was deliciously light and creamy. Well done Joan no matter where you are. I enjoyed just sitting inside and admiring the environment created. I will definitely come back to try some of the many food items on my next visit now that I know that Joan is in this location. read more

I can't speak for dine in because even though I live right next door I always order take out or get delivery. For years I stuck with their Chinese chicken salad but recently I've discovered their brisket sandwich! Worth the extra calories! I mean just look at this pic! We came in on a Sunday morning during the Studio City farmers market. Because of the farmers market the street it is on was closed, but we found parking a few blocks away in the neighborhood behind it, which had unlimited free parking in Sundays. When we first walked in it was packed so we quickly scouted out a table. Having never been here before we were very confused about how & where to order. They have a grocery counter, and ice cream counter, and then a counter with a register. We found some menus and discovered that you order at the counter. We shared the breakfast burrito, which was delicious, and the avocado toast, which was pretty plain for the price. We also tried the grapefruit juice because we couldn't recall when we'd ever had fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, but it was pretty average. I'm thankful to have a place like Joan's on Third in LA. It's the closest thing to a NY food emporium I've seen. It's slightly reminiscent of Dean & DeLuca's. I like the atmosphere. The music. The decor. Staff is friendly. Love that they decorate for the holidays and seasons. Some of my favorite menu items are their scrambled eggs with bacon and buttered toast. Their hash browns are delicious and enough to share for two people unless you're starving. I like their avocado toast. Although, it does vary depending on who's making it. Sometimes it's better than other times. In their freezer section, the arancini balls are yummy to take home and keep on hand. Pull out what you want and bake at 400 degrees for about 15-20 minutes. Serve with marinara sauce. They don't always stock these delicious rice balls but you can place an order for them. Some of their prepared dips are tasty too. The apple onion dip. The olive tapenade. The green goddess dressing. Pick up a bag of their homemade chips to go with everything but the olive tapenade. Grab some bagel chips for it. Their mini chocolate chip cookies in a bag at the register are super yummy. If you're not careful, you'll eat the whole bag on your way to the car. I prefer to go early in the morning. They open at 8am. It gets very crowded as the day goes on. The weekends can be a zoo. Again, go early. Sunday can be nuts with the farmer's market going on outside their front doors. Seating at Joan's is primarily communal tables inside. Although, there are some tables that aren't. Outside tables and chairs are available too. Metered parking can be difficult to get. Sometimes you have to park on neighborhood streets behind Joan's or even up on Ventura Blvd. It isn't always easy to go to Joan's, but it's easier than a flight to NY. read more

Solid breakfast burrito, sometimes inconsistent in quality and warmth. They should try to figure out a way to keep food warm throughout delivery. Drinks need improvement, specifically the orange juice needs to be colder and the latte should use better quality milk. I came in to get a few frozen entrees and I noticed that a nearby refrigerator seemed super not cold. I noticed the thermometer was at 40 degrees about. ( which from my understanding is teetering on the danger zone and if it was a degree higher, could be dangerous ) I decided to alert a nearby employee who was super awesome and sweet and she promptly got the attention of the manager who came by and looked at the fridge. Although she sort of addressed the employee and us passively, saying it was okay to be "40 and below and that the reading wasn't accurate", I didn't feel like the manager handled the situation correctly nor do I feel confident about shopping in the refrigerated section at all. It was the dismissiveness of the manager once she was alerted to the issue that didn't sit right with me. I have no confidence that the reading was incorrect and that it was in fact a bit cooler, but I'm in no position to argue nor are the employees. Seemed much larger, both inside and in the outdoor seating area. Unlike the location on 3rd Street, all the tables outside are level and don't slope or rock. I was a little overwhelmed so many different stations inside didn't know where to order and what's for what etc. Anyway, placed my order for a Chinese chicken salad (no crunchies due to gf sensitivity) and I got a salad in a metal bowl with dressing and chicken. I've had better. Should've taken a picture. I was shocked, I could've made this at home. Then I started thinking about how much I just paid for this ridiculous salad and I also treated my friend to lunch who had a trio plate that didn't have much flavor because she kept having to add salt and pepper and Cholula. I won't be back and would not recommend. We should've went across the street to Mendocino farms. This place is obviously just for looks. Service was eh. Cashier wasn't the friendliest just very blah. 1 star for the food, 1 star for the pricing/quality and 2 stars for the ambiance. Want a good sandwich or salad? Go to Mendocino farms across the way. This place is horrible! A bunch of snobby cashiers! I came in today with my two kids around lunch time. A blond woman with face piercing took our order. She was rude and was not helpful at all. She really acted like she did not want to be there today and could care less about taking our order. My son has allergies so I was asking her if the hash browns had butter since my son is allergic to dairy. She was very cold and really could care less to ask her manager. The manager was just as useless as her employee. I asked if she could check if their toast/bread contained any of my sons allergies and she was not helpful at all! This place is a freaking joke! They don't take allergies seriously or maybe just really do not want to cater to anyone with allergies! I definitely will not be back! I have a deep love for the ambiance of Joan's on Third. Smiling staff, clean, open, lively, and nicely decorated. Clearly, a lot of detail and work went into the seasonal presentation at Joan's for the holidays, and it was absolutely beautiful. We only ordered two pastries here: the Morning Bun and the Strawberry Buttermilk Muffin. The Morning Bun had a good texture - the dough was soft, buttery, and super flaky on the outside. In between layers of the dough, there was the thick cinnamon sugar filling. I thought the filling was way too sweet, however, and the dough was way too buttery. The excessive butter taste gave the bun an oily and greasy mouthfeel, and the filling was a little too grainy/gritty from the sugar. As for the Strawberry Buttermilk Muffin, it was really good! I liked it a lot more than the Morning Bun. It resembled and reminded me of a biscuit, with its crispy, crusty, buttery exterior and softer/lighter texture on the inside. The fresh strawberries baked on top brought forth a slight hint of sweetness and a vibrant strawberry flavor. The buttermilk added a slight tang that was really subtle and barely noticeable, but the muffin persisted to showcase an amazing flavor all around. Overall, I believe some things you'll order here will be a hit or miss, but it's worth it to stop on by! read more
