I've been to Joan's on Third many times over the years, but this visit was a reminder of how far "curated" can drift into "needlessly rigid." I asked for a very simple modification: a fried egg instead of a scrambled egg. Same ingredients. Same kitchen. Same price. You'd think I asked for ketchup on caviar. The response? They couldn't do it because it would "compromise the integrity of the recipe." Integrity... of scrambled vs fried eggs. Let's be clear: this isn't a tasting menu, a chef's counter, or a Michelin-starred experience where the dish is a precise artistic statement. This is a busy café with laminated menus, takeout counters, and pastries in glass cases. Invoking "recipe integrity" over an egg preparation feels less like culinary principle and more like policy masquerading as philosophy. If you like your food exactly as written and enjoy being told "no" for reasons that sound fancier than they are, you'll be perfectly happy here. I have met up with friends here, had many business meetings here, and about five zillion mediocre dates here. Here are the couple things I don't love (well that most people don't love) parking can be a b!tch here. And the wacky three counters to order and confuse you at situation. I love that there's a location in the valley now. They've been here for a while now as I remember when they first opened. It was always the original location on third that I used to always go to as it was close to work. Now there's another location without having to cross over the hill. Not my first time here. The location is amazing as it along the little strip of Ventura place. Just north of Ventura blvd along a cute area with other little boutique shops. It's not a big place but it's quite roomy both inside and with the outdoor seating. They pretty much have everything. Cute place for a nice meal catching up with friends or pick up some of the to go items. Everything is always fresh and prepared daily. Not only meals, they have a really extensive cheese selections. A gourmet shop with tasty pastries, cute souvenir and good food. More than likely you'll run to into someone in the industry also enjoying their meal. The staff brings the food directly to you which makes for a smooth experience. The service is efficient and my order arrived in about 15 minutes. The breakfast burrito is a standout and I would definitely order it again. It is a proper burrito with crunchy bacon and soft eggs. The tortilla has a nice crunch to it that adds a great texture to every bite. While the café au lait was just basic coffee, the quality of the food made the visit worthwhile. The vanilla muffin thing had great texture, it was fluffy, pillowy soft, and a thin crust. Flavor wise, it was poor. There was hardly any vanilla flavor and besides the cinnamon sugar coating, it was just like eating a plain cupcake. the crust on the mixed berry scone was fantastic, so crispy and caramelized. But it was so thick, dense, and doughy with nothing to account for it. And then the coffee . . . I ordered an Americano and the barista asked if I wanted milk in it. I've never had, seen, or been asked if I want milk in an americano. Fine, not a big deal. But then I took the first sip and got the bitter taste of burnt coffee and a mouth full of coffee grounds. Holy Smokes, as far as prices it's not cheap but boy do you get quality. The little baguettes with ham and cheese are my go to. I get three or four and polish them off in a second. I asked the person who took our order if they could heat up my deli meat (because I'm pregnant and trying avoid listeria), and initially she declined, but when I mentioned I was pregnant she said she could do it (pregnancy bonus I guess?) I ordered the Turkey Club with bacon, butter lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, and added some avocado. The sandwich was great, and I enjoyed my cold brew as well. My friend grabbed a Chinese Chicken Salad, and mocha. She was a little thrown off by the fact it looks like it comes in serving bowl/dog-type bowl, but she said she enjoyed the salad, although she wished the chicken wasn't breaded. Yet another great experience in this spot. Their Short Rib Sandwich is nothing Short of amazing. The meat literally melts in your mouth and is very delicious. The sandwich comes on a perfectly grilled white bread, with cheese and caramelised onions and some greens. Very yummy combination. In addition, they have probably the best chocolate chip cookie that I've had in LA. The only thing is , I almost needed to beg a lady working there to warm it up for me. The lady kept telling me that she just took it out of the oven. After touching the cookie and realising that it's barely room temperature, I needed to ask her again to heat it up nonetheless, because I like my cookie here temperature hot, so it is slightly crispy, while the chocolate chips themselves are melted, and delicious. At the end, I got my cookie served right and it was amazingly good. All in all, Joan's is a great place with great food, just don't resist warming up my cookie!). read more

If there were such a thing as a 6-star rating, I'd give it here without hesitation. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to be blown away by a burger at this spot, but that's exactly what happened. The magic? The pickles. I'm pretty sure they make them in house and it shows. They are crisp, fresh, seasoned with dilll and carry just the right amount of salt. That tangy acidity cuts through the richness of the double smashd patties and melted cheese. The patties themselves were textbook perfection: crispy carmelized edges with juicy flavorful centers. Every bite was a perfect balance: pure unpretentious deliciousnesssss!!! Behind every great burger is a greater fry. Not too greasy or salty, the potatoes and oil used are of good quality which helps to enhance the flavor experience. We also tried the roast chicken with vegetables. The chicken was tender and nicely cooked, though it didn't reach the same wow factor as the burger. What did surprise me (in the best way) was their cheese and butter selection. They stock Beurre butter from France... the gold standard of butter and truly the only one i'd call "real butter" here in the States. So yes.... I'll be back. Ordered the short rib and originally hash browns on the side. Once I walked in, I saw that they had another area with items that weren't on the menu including fingerling potatoes with chimichurri so had them swap out the hashbrowns for these. I also noticed that the sandwich didn't come with a sauce so found that they had a garlic aioli on the side of the fried chicken sandwich and as predicted, it made the sandwich taste so much better than it already was (which it indeed was). The potatoes were okay and which it came with more sauce. The service was great though and it was pretty spacious inside and out. I tried the lox bagel for the first time today and once again they didn't disappoint. Most restaurants you order a lox bagel and they serve it to you with each ingredients separately soI really appreciate the fact that they actually created a lox sandwich here and I didn't need to build the sandwich myself. The sandwiches and burrito were amazing, and so filling we each took a half home. I had the breakfast burrito with veggie sausage and it was amazing. The pumpkin bread looked boring but the flavors were great and it was very moist. The latte was beautiful and good. Joan's on Third is so LA it's actually painful. If you want to walk around a trendy looking restaurant/market space with $10 boxes of marshmallows and $15 jars of jelly, Joan's is for you. If you've seen the coffee cups or tiled floors on Instagram and want to post one yourself, Joan's is for you. If you want to spend $10 on a basic grilled cheese or $12.50 on a BLT, Joan's is for you. Basically if money is not a factor at all and ambiance is most important, Joan's is perfect for you. Unfortunately, I don't think Joan's is not for me. I really like the Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato & Basil sandwich, Pulled Pork sandwich, and Turkey Club, but the prices are steep for what you get. The screen went dark during my transaction and I let him know this; at first he appeared to be really helpful but then I asked for a receipt, only to see the 20% added on even though I didn't choose this option since the screen was dark and I couldn't do this myself. Unfortunately, I had added cash into their tip jar and almost wanted to take it back since he already gave himself one on my debit card. When we got to Joan's, it was busy with people eating inside and outside. We had ordered online and were just picking up our food to go, but I wish I was able to eat there and people watch. We went to the counter and asked about our online order, which was promptly given to us and we left. When we got to eat our food, all of our order was there and we each enjoyed what we ordered. I got the Chinese chicken salad, which was very simple but still very delicious and filling. My partner ordered the short rib sandwich was realllyyy good! Everything looked picture perfect in the deli display and there are (3) counters to order from so if one line is long look at the others. Bistro style seating inside as well as communal tables to sit and enjoy your feast. They were decorated for the Spring and Easter when I stopped in. Prices are what you should expect for this caliber of a gourmet market. Counter service (over by the beverages) was meh not trying to help me out nor come down to the actual deli display to see what I wanted to order. I stood in front of the display for a while looking to make eye contact when any number of employees behind but none of them even glanced my way. I will say the young Lady at the front register (bakery area) was pleasant and thanked people for waiting. Speaking of which they did not rush anyone who came up to the counter they allowed each person to take their time and make up their mind. So THAT is a plus. The Curry Chicken Salad had huge portions of Chicken not cut in cubes so keep this in mind if you intend on making a sandwich. The Cavatappi Pasta Salad smelled AMAZING and was quite flavorful. I've been very impressed with their expanding menu, grocery/pre-package, bulk buy items, treats and accessories. The Vegan Chicken Salad, Plant-based Sausage, Sesame Seed Avocado Toast, Szechuan Green Beans...(drooling)... Are all to be enjoyed along with whatever your pleasure is and while I don't eat cheese, they have this crazy dairy variety for cheese lovers... But trust me if they added in dairy-free half pound or pound cuts... I'd go wild lol. Something for everyone on the menu regardless of dietary needs, allergens, restriction or preferences and most things can be made to order. They offer catering, food boxes (including cute ones for a picnic, beach day and even the Hollywood Bowl) and so many great things (like that wine & beer selection)! This place is great for a quick lunch or coffee with treats. They have a good selection of salads and sandwiches. I really liked the salmon bagel sandwich. It's great for lunch or breakfast. We also enjoyed the chicken sandwich. The place is pretty noisy so if your not a fan of loud places you may want to sit outside yet that may also be loud as it sits on a busy street. The inside is has a simple design and has to separate ordering stations. One dedicate to coffee and oasteries and the other dedicated to all the offerings. One thing I did not enjoy was the service. I asked for more tea and the lady forgot 2x and I finally went inside and asked for the hot water myself. I also asked for a Togo box and again no one can back and I had to go inside to find one. Wow. Just wow. My sandwich was just perfection. I was aiming originally for a Turkey club in a croissant but since they were out of croissants, I got the Turkey club on ciabatta. The ciabatta is so soft, tasty, and fresh I could not stop myself from diving in. My order was prepared in a timely manner considering they were busy. The Turkey was super juicy and fresh so I'm really happy and the bacon was cooked to perfection, not too burnt and not too raw. I'm such a happy camper, thank you guys!
