My compression was low on cylinders 2 & 3 and I wanted to install a turbo kit on my 1999 Mazda Miata. I thought to myself, well it's either a rebuild or swap. Crunched the numbers and a rebuild made more sense. I followed youtube academy to pull the head off, I took the head to JMS Racing Engines, and I let them have their way with my engine for about 2 or 3 weeks. They identified that the compression issue was bad valves/seals. They machined the head surface and installed new valve seals and gave me a brief "how to install without breaking it" guide when I picked it up. Look at that before and after. It's so damn sexy. I can't wait to show it off at the next car meet (JK nobody can see it but ME okay! OKAY!) HAH.. no, but jokes aside, I'm very happy with the work from JMS Racing Engines. It was a couple hundred more than I expected to pay but the job was done so damn well I cant even complain. Pay the pros to do it for you. Worth it in my opinion. I've had JMS in El Monte perform work on components belonging to several of my engines. I first became aware of JMS when a long time neighbor mentioned to me that he had his father's 70's Ford truck engine rebuilt in the early 90's and that this truck was still running on that rebuild decades later with near perfect performance due to the quality of JMS's work. This impressed me and I decided to find JMS, discuss the upcoming projects I had in mind with my vehicles, and ultimately do business with them. They performed the cylinder head to intake gasket match and the cylinder head porting for my 1989 GMC and 1969 Buick in addition to building the short block for my 1969 Buick from parts I sourced from TA. Over a year later and with 15,000 miles on the heads they modified from Edelbrock that I installed on my '89 engine block the work they've done has proven perfectly reliable and resulted in noticeable gains in gas mileage and power. I haven't installed my short block in my '69 but based off of my experience with my GMC and the appearance of the block I have no doubts my second experience will be as positive as the first. They take an interested and professional approach to the work they do and went above and beyond in the case of porting the cylinder heads I had provided them. It's obvious from the quality of the finish and smoothness of the flow around the valves that they're knowledgeable, careful, and talented when it comes to the services they provide. I'm a mechanical engineer with experience in machining, manufacturing, and industrial systems so I'm in a good position when it comes to being able to evaluate those qualities in a finished product. JMS is my go-to machine shop and I'd recommend it to anyone I knew who was looking for quality and value in a engine rebuild and I have every intention of sending any future work to their shop as well. read more

Just picked up our engine, and they repaired and uogrades for our 72 nova. Was able to salvage the block, but unfortunately, our crank was toast. They were able to squeeze our engine in and get it fixed with some upgrades parts. Overall, I am happy with the services and looking forward to breaking it in on the engine dyno soon. read more

They destroyed my 10k in parts (not labor) honda build not once but twice! said they'll reimburse me, "supposably did" but once i doubled checked the work they did to the motor, it came half assed.....an estimated total of a year and a half it stayed in the shop...Didn't re-get the parts i initially paid for and etc. The really didn't do a good job on my honda, won't trust them working on my classic chevy......won't be giving them business period and added to the people who recommended this place..... read more

It's hard to find a good engine shop these days. I had some work done by another company and they really did sloppy work and I had some issues with the car running. Mike at JMS really went the distance when I brought him my Honda head. He checked everything and discovered the wrong valve stem seals were installed. Turn around was quick and the price was fair. He even took the time to help me over the phone when I had some other issues with car. They specialize in high performance applications like GM LS engines, Ford, Dodge, but also do a lot of import engines, like Honda for example. Next time I need an engine rebuilt or a head redone I'm going straight to JMS. I'm not going to give myself a headache for trying to save a few hundred dollars. Understand that many consumers who like myself have a 72 Cutlass Vehicle are not "gear heads" .We just want a nice classic to take care of and drive. So I call this place and as soon as the guy pics up, I get that douche " customers are idiots " vibe. So I ask that I would like my engine to be rebuilt "350" or maybe if after they see it and recommend a new engine we can do that aswell, So I ask if he can help with that or has any new engines....NO ...oookayy He then tells me that I have to take the engine by itself , LOL and it's a 2 week job.. If I could take it out I wouldn't need you and just do it myself...prob take me 4 weeks like it would you.. So I tell him , no it's in the car then he rudely says ...well that takes about a month but YOU need tot all to the mechanic first...then who the fudge are you picking up the phone for? I had a great experience with JMS from the first day! I had JMS build me a 427 Chevy ( Dart block )small block. Mike had the engine assembled and on their in house dyno, and invited me to come see it run! It made very good power , and looks beautiful! Mike delivered the engine to my home ( at no additional cost ) and treated me well through out the entire process! I am excited to get the engine installed in my 70' Nova! The car is a custom build , so I needed something special for the engine! I got exactly what I wanted for the price we agreed upon , and that's a win in my book! JMS is a full machine shop with the ability to do all the machining in house! Not too many shops able to do this any more! You walk in the front door and are greeted with something that has basically vanished over the years.... friendly people , and a ton of parts! Joaquin Alpizar and his business JMS Racing is nothing but a lying scam artist looking for a way to take full advantage of innocent customers trying to modify their cars. I have personally spent upwards of 30k with JMS Racing but I have been left with a non working vehicle both times which is unfortunate. My car has spent more time down with no motor in it the last 4-5yrs than it has running. Joaquin "built" two LSX motors for my car that both ended up blowing up. One motor barely made it 500 miles and the other motor barely made it to the 800 mile mark. Both motors that Joaquin built 1000% blew up because of the inability to build a motor the correct way in which I was charged for machine work twice that never happened. If the machine work did happen the issues that were found recently would of never been found by my new engine builder. Cylinder bores out of round in ALL cylinders top to bottom along with main bearing clearances way too tight which is the reason the motor kept spinning bearings. No line bore was ever done but yet I was charged for machine work each time. Oil plugs left loose inside the block, instead of using the correct plug from GM Joaquin just threw a bolt with rtv in the oil dipstick hole. Both blown engines resulted in me the customer having to buy a new crank each time, another set of pistons, main and rod bearings, all new gaskets/"shop materials" along with paying for the labor and machine work associated with having to building yet another motor. Joaquin installed ARP flywheel bolts into a Monster triple disk clutch and when the car hit the dyno the clutch started slipping when the tuner started leaning on the car Joaquin was nowhere in sight to take any of the blame. Monster Clutches clutch installation instructions CLEARLY STATE do NOT use ARP hardware on their clutches and to use stock GM flywheel bolts probably because of this very reason but the clutch slipping was of course my fault the customer. Unfortunately I am not the only person Joaquin has taken advantage of, there have been countless customers that he has done wrong and I hope and pray that they have the strength to come forward so this man and his shop can no longer fly under the radar. Joaquin has shaved pushrods down on a head cam C6Z because he didn't want to wait on the correct length push rods from Texas Speed. There have been numerous GTR's that have had engine issues and even failures but of course Joaquin always blames either the tune in the car or the customer instead of taking ownership for the mistakes and having any integrity to fix the issue for the customer on his dime. The way that Joaquin Alpizar and his business JMS Racing operates is pretty unfortunate and uncalled for. This business has absolutely no place in the car market due to lies, money schemes and bad faith. There will be more to follow soon in the upcoming months that I can assure you. read more

JMS Racing engines is a cut above, I had Joe and Mike go through a 63 Buick Riviera for me. I dropped the car off in mechanically bad shape and picked up clean cruiser ready to drive to New York. The project was extensive, engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, new rear end, and a long list of other stuff that I have mostly forgotten about by now as it was addressed correctly and never been an issue since. All of the R&R was done in house by Joe, my car never left JMS except for exhaust work, which was a nightmare for someone to do the way I requested LOL (turned out amazing) The work, attention to detail and care was second to none. These guys are a class act and run an honest business, as a small business owner I truly appreciate the type of service that they offer and I received. My project was an odd ball deal, Riviera's changed pretty much every small detail about every 6 months during production, these guys were up to the challenge of keeping my build aesthetically correct sourcing the right parts and staying true to factory specs as per my request. So heres the deal, don't be a cheap ass and try to save a few bucks going to someone who may or may not get you sorted as promised, when you spend money with JMS you are purchasing a result from a business that stands behind their work and have for a very long time. My car now has 6000 flawless, turn key, no bullshit miles on it. To be quite honest I could not even tell you what my bill at JMS was, long after the price is forgotten, the quality remains. read more

Seems like a late review but well deserved. I use to go to JMS back in the day circa 2001. and they did about 10 -12 Honda blocks for me from simple machining to re-sleeving and always charged me the regular rate never extra just because of the type of work. They were always clean and did things right (i.e. had all the right tools for the job). And when they did my Honda stuff, if they needed to, they would buy the tooling if required. It's hard to find a good machine shop theses days and they are one of them. read more
