I can't imagine anyone saying anything negative about Russ and Eric at Steve's Machine. I had them do a VW 2332cc engine for my desert car. The way it knocked and with little to no oil pressure, I figured it was junk. Russ took it apart and assed the damage. In his opinion it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, and I was ready for the worst. He installed a new crank, fit new main and rod bearings with new rings and a valve grind. I had a practically new motor at less than half the price of a new. Three years of abuse later, it's still running strong and doesn't leak a drop. That gave me the confidence to have them build a Pontiac 462ci for my 67 GTO/Le Mans. At his shop, Russ sat down with me over a cup of coffee and gave me his full attention. We discussed my new build, and he gave me his opinion about some of my choices with really good reasoning. Some of his ideas gave me more performance at little to no extra cost. He saved me money on unnecessary over building, while also advising on weak areas. During the build he showed me on my engine, extra things he does on all motors. Shimming lifters, spec'ing ARP bolts, dialing the valve train, and milling the intake manifold to name a few. He doesn't cut corners; I don't think his conscious would let him. Once it was done, they broke it in on their shop dyno. They optimized the timing and fuel curve. It made 419hp @ 4800 rpm and 513 ft/lbs. torque @ 4000 rpm. It's ready to rumble. I go out of my way to recommended them, every chance I get. And for what I got, the pricing was more than fair and reasonable. Nothing but a positive experience. Also, sometimes if you want the best, you have to get in line and wait. That's life! read more

Came here and got my head fully rebuilt, they ended up cracking my head and didn't say a thing returned the head without doing a pressure test, countless time and money spent on this build from oem fluids to oem gaskets and purchased a new block thinking my block was bad because I trusted their work on the head and the head ended up being cracked they did not reimburse me or try to fix anything with me they said they will fix it and call it even horrible customer service read more

I emailed a picture into Russ, he emailed back quickly and stated the rough time it would take and price. I took it down at 10am and got a phone call - few hours later to say it had been completed and was ready for pickup. The finish is excellent and it cost me only $40 odd. Excellent job and service... Since Russ took over a lot has changed from when Steve was milling VW heads. I would not be able to comment on quality or value because they were "booked" from spring through fall. And they now only communicate through an email reply that states "Sorry we're booked solid." It's disappointing because they used to be my go to shop. Even purchased one of Russ's pre-made B20 bottom ends. Oh well I guess it is the end of an Era. read more

Dropped of my flywheel to get it resurfaced , was told to be ready the next day. So next day came and my flywheel was still there untouched, I was a little upset but Steve make sure it get done ASAP , so waited outside for a bit and the finishing work is 4/5 good price and good works man shop . Brought my E36 M3 head in to get it repaired and had a status report by the end of next day. Steve told me my head was cracked and would need to be welded. I was a bit bummed, but they assured me the welding shop was one of the best. Eric reported back to me and said the weld was successful but the head started to open up after another pressure test. They just charged me for the pressure test and not the weld. Steve and Eric were really helpful and honest. They could've thrown everything back together and polished it to make it look nice and collected a nice sum from me, but they didn't! I ended up purchasing a newer performance head and told them I'd go back to them for any other machining I need done. read more

I went in and told Steve the problem I was having with my dune buggy and asked how much it would cost for them to take a look at it. He told me they don't do estimates, so that I can fix it at home or take it somewhere else. Steve's is the greatest. I'm 44 now and back in the 80s this place was the top notch owner operated VW machine shop. You would always see the coolest modified VW, and still do, vehicles in there. Now days they do everything. They are great with the ricers and the Chevy small block and BB engines. Going back to stock they can help. Simple they can help. Need bit machining work done they can do. Need a modified small block fully decked out they can do that too. Russ is my go to lately because I've been helping the kids and their 4 banger projects but my 68 camaro engine is going in for complete restoration and maybe a little internal work to give it a bit more ;). They are Father and Son's operated now so each son has his specialty. Bit if you need great quality machining done these are the people for sure. These guys are amazing! I had a rough idle for a month before i finally decided to get it fixed whether i could afford it or not. I had customer at my job recommend Steve's which i had never heard of. But i figured they couldn't be worse than the last place i went...Young's I made an appointment and dropped the car off. I called them each day and they answered my questions and gave me status reports. After 2 days they said they still hadn't completely fixed the problem. They fixed a vacuum leak and a few other issues but told me if i didn't want to wait one more day they would let me take the car for FREE. i left the car and the next day they found and fixed the problem and had it ready before i had to go to work. These guys are amazing, very friendly and personable, but most importantly do great work. I'll be going back for any future issues guaranteed! read more

This is THEE place to go for any kind of engine work. From a simple rebuild to a high performance monster build, Russ and Eric know what they are doing. The best part is that all so friendly and are always willing to give some advice and share their knowledge. The nice thing is that they don't try to up-sell you on things that aren't needed for your specific build. I thought I needed some parts but they said that for my build those parts were not needed. They could have easily sold me on expensive pistons but steered me in a more cost effective route and also explained to me why what I was thinking I needed was not actually needed. AMAZING. This is the only place I would ever take my BMW. I've shopped around and took my car to about 3 other places and was quoted about 3 times more than what Steve's quoted me. I've taken my car to other places in the past only to have to return with the same problem or sometimes even more problems. This has never happened with Steve's. Ed, the mechanic, is a miracle worker. He knows his stuff! I've told him what other auto shops had said the issue was and how much they quoted me, and he'd laugh and tell me what was really wrong and quote me something way less.
