Commonwealth Computer Services came to my aide this past week when I had 2 serious problems. For the first, I called and made an appointment for someone to come to my house. I was sent a picture of the tech who would come, he arrived at the appointed time and did a terrific job. Two days later when it appeared I had been scammed online, I called and the same tech arrived in less than an hour. He checked everything over, found nothing amiss and put my mind at ease. I still have work to do with new accounts and password changes, but certainly know who to call again if I have problems.

My computer died and the motherboard code indicated insufficient power. I was pretty sure I needed a new power supply but I wanted to be certain before I spent the money. I brought the power supply in hoping they could just hook it up to one of their rigs and see if it worked. I should have known I was in trouble when the guy looked at it and said "Wow, that's a lot of cables!" A week later when I hadn't heard from them I called and asked if they'd checked it. The answer was "The one with all the cables? Yeah... it was broken... the connector or something." Fortunately I was able to come get it before they recycled it. When my new power supply arrived I hooked everything up and... the exact same problem as before. There was never anything wrong with the power supply. My computer is now running with a new motherboard (the actual problem) but the exact same power supply CC told me "has a broken connector or something." Clearly these are folks that business call to install windows on all their computers, not the kind who actually fix hardware issues. If they'd just admitted that they would have saved me a whole lot of time and ultimately about 60 bucks on parts I didn't need.

I bought an Acer LCD monitor here that was slightly better than the Acer LCD monitor that Walmart sold. It was also cheaper. They've always tried to get me what I've needed. Needless to say after going through the cross-country USPS gauntlet the console arrived DOA. Whoever handles their eBay account was completely unapologetic about it when I contacted them about the issue. They did offer a refund, but the guy I dealt with was a total jerk about it. When I asked if he'd be cool with getting a piece of vintage gear shipped to him packed like that, his response was "I'm not the kind of person to let little things bother me. Let me know if you want to return it, otherwise, please don't contact me with silly questions again. Thanks." When I told him I'd let the Atari collecting community know about his attitude, his response was "Haha, shouldn't be too big of a community. I'm sorry you are so upset, but it is what it is." I find this contempt for their customers appalling and won't be a return customer. UPDATE: So (ignoring the Tech Exchange moron's utterly stupid advice to return the thing using the same horrible packing materials they sent it in) I packed the broken console up securely using proper packing materials- lots of bubble wrap and packing peanuts, securely enclosed in a big sturdy box. You could throw that thing off a cliff and it'd be fine. Got a message from eBay today. Apparently the Tech Exchange opened a case with eBay and tried (unsuccessfully) to weasel out of giving me a refund by claiming that they received it "in different condition than how it was shipped". Nice try but no dice: I shipped it back in the exact condition I got it. News flash: ship electronics with zero padding and a box that's way too small and chances are excellent that it'll *break* before it arrives at the buyer's address. Case closed. eBay denied the Tech Exchange idiot's pathetic and *dishonest* claim and refunded my money. The Tech Exchange now has at least one less customer and another bit of bad feedback on their eBay profile. Buyer beware.

After picking it up they said it was the power supply cord and it just needed to be replaced. Ok, simple enough. And they changed me $50 to diagnose the problem. I was surprised at the time they were going to charge me $50 to tell me I needed a new power cord. I guess that was my fault for not understanding how the pricing worked. Anyway I paid and left and still had a laptop that wouldn't fully charge but at least I new what the problem was. I then purchased a new factory power supply which was around $80 from Dell. My laptop still doesn't charge fully so the power supply was not the problem and I am now out $130 because of incorrect information.

He spent a good bit of time trying to get my laptop to boot up and eventually removed the hard drive and battery to take them to his home workshop so he could retrieve my info and put it on my thumb drive. He rang me in the evening to say that sadly the hard drive was corrupt and couldn't be accessed. The battery had begun to bow upward, so it was a goner too. In his opinion the 7 year old machine wasn't worth fixing because at that age things would just keep going wrong. Kinda like a used car. In the end he didn't charge me a penny because he wasn't able to fix my machine! How often does that happen?!!
