Moved to OBX about a year ago - Working through restaurants - had high hopes for JK's based on reviews. It's not that it was bad in any way - just not great for the money. Took a bit to be seated - that was fine. Service was good. Started with a bottle of wine and a wedge salad / spinach and oyster salad. Both good. Loaf of warm bread came - also good. Entrees arrived - husband had filet and shrimp (JK's Special). Steak did not seem like a filet - was a bit undercooked also (more rare than med rare). Shrimp were good. Bernaise sauce was inedible. Mashed potatoes okay - neither of us could eat the succotash - terrible! I had the veal chop - was good but not great. All in all - we commented we should have stopped after the salad. For the money - can get better steaks elsewhere. They stay busy I am sure because not much competition - but probably will never go back. read more

Had come here many times in the years past and could not wait to come back. Took friends for a dinner, 3 orders of steaks all ordered medium, served extremely rare! Half chicken and ribs were dry. All the meats were way over seasoned. Mashed potatoes had a dry crust film on them like they were sitting under the heat lamp too long. The collard greens and succotash were also terrible. An hour wait between soup (which also took too long to be served) and main course. Arrived at 6:20, sat and ordered within 20 minutes. Our dinner was served to us just after 8! Would not have minded that so much if we didn't choke on the first bites because of the seasoning. Got called for our table at 6:30 so ok. Not too bad. Waiter, Chance, came to our table was really kind of out of it, asked some questions about the menu he said he was just taking our drink order at the moment. Got our drinks and ordered oyster Rockefeller which came out pretty fast and was pretty good. My friend ordered the medium rare cowboy ribeye and I got the chicken and ribs. Again the food came out pretty fast, the chicken was ok, both the ribs and the ribeye were very tough. For $170 check without any alcohol I would have definitely expected better. I've had better food at Texas Roadhouse for less than half the price. I don't mind paying for a nice meal, but I expect to get what I pay for. I won't be back. read more

One of the best places to eat in the OBX, and one of the best steaks out there! Everything else is delicious too. The hot French bread is addicting and so delicious. All the salads are fresh and amazing too. My husband got the ribeye, and said it was the best meal he has ever eaten. Also, the profiteroles for dessert are heaven! There were a couple big parties ahead of us, but there weren't that many people. Despite being the first ones in the door, we still had a 45 minute wait. When we sat down to look at the menu, I was shocked. The entrées were about 50% higher than what was posted on the website. That was a little disappointing. They had a 16 ounce and a 20 ounce steak neither which I would be able to eat. I just could not justify 58 and $68 and $78 for a steak, I did get the chicken piccata, which was outstanding read more

Great atmosphere and a very talented bartender, as well as some delicious food. Daily menu and what are very clearly quality ingredients. Unfortunately, their grill must have been screaming hot the night we dined because our shrimp skewer very tough and overcooked and our steaks, while cooked to temp inside, both had a TON of black char on the outside. Disappointing experience. We live in OBX and have been to JKs on other occasions. It didn't feel like the special restaurant it once was. The atmosphere was loud and bright. I felt like I was in Chili's or a hamburger joint. Not the exclusive restaurant I remember. The tables are covered in paper, maybe a COVID precaution, but didn't look good. The service was ok, not great. We had to pry options for our meal out of the server like it was a closely held secret. We ordered the best steaks on the menu ($60) which were good. I'm sure the atmosphere had something to do with why I didn't think more of the food. My review should have said it was fantastic. I just expected more. We spent over $400 for three people, so my expectations should have been high, right? On a good note, the hostess was very friendly and tracked us down in the bar when our table was ready. The bartender was nice and made a great old fashioned. So you see, there were some highlights. I think for special occasions or a really nice dinner, you can find better options in OBX. Let me start off by saying the wait is well worth it. It is first come first serve so be there early to ensure you get a table. Amy was our server and she did an exceptional job. Friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The crab bisque appetizer was a large bowl of hot crabby goodness! They served warm fresh French bread in a bundle with delicious soft butter. The quail appetizer was Sublime as well as the fried green tomatoes! All steaks we're perfectly prepared and oh so tender you literally could cut them with a fork. Heard great things about this restaurant from locals so my family and I decided to come for my sisters birthday. The staff is friendly and accommodating and always made sure we were taken care of. Our appetizers were fantastic. I loved my quail, my mom and dad really enjoyed their clam chowder and seafood bisque, and my sister and her friend really liked their Caesar salads. The main courses where great as well. I got the JK special my steak was tender and flavorful and the shrimp was delicious, my mom loved her salmon. My dad and sister loved the flavors of their cowboy and strip steaks. My sister did wish her cut of steak was a little more tender but she still really enjoyed it. Finally my sisters friends chicken was really flavorful and juicy. Finally we all got dessert and honestly the desserts felt like we had stumbled into heaven. My sisters key lime pie was delicious. Her friends brownie with ice cream was sweet and moist. My parents profiteroles were amazing with a great chocolate sauce. And my creme brûlée was honestly the greatest of ever had and I've had a lot. I honestly wanted to order 5 more after my First bite. We were looking forward to a steak dinner and decided to give this place a try since it is one of the only true steakhouses at OBX. Lots of cars in the parking lot, so felt like it is popular with the locals. Service was fast and friendly and they put us in a back room with 3 socially distanced tables. Everyone wore masks, which we appreciated. Loved the small neck clams appetizer; wish we could have saved the sauce to dip our bread! The warm bread was wonderful - warm and fluffy and enjoyed it very much with their butter. My Caesar salad was so tasty; loved the crisp romaine and the dressing - one of the best I've ever had. The dressing had the right amount of sardine flavor without being overwhelming. So up until this point, I was pretty excited for my steak. I ordered the USDA prime rib eye ($60) that was dry aged for 50 days and got it medium well. It came with a side of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Sadly, the steak did not live up to the hype. It was cooked well, but it lacked any dry aged flavor. There was an overwhelming liquid mesquite flavor that I did not like and it seemed as though all their meat was done this way (as described in their menu). My husband's ribs were the same. Even with the extra salt and pepper, I could not choke it down. I brought home the rest in hopes I could eat it the following day, but still did not like it and ended up throwing it out :(. Thought I could salvage my experience by ordering their signature dessert the Profiterole. The pics looked great on Yelp. The homemade chocolate sauce was gloppy and the pastry was hard. My husband had the Rib and Chicken combo. And we were both so thoroughly impressed and happy with our choices. Not only was the food amazing but the service was also fantastic. Some may be deterred by the prices. To that I'll say; If you want subpar food that's reasonably priced, there are plenty of restaurants other that are available. There's just something about butter melting into bread that makes my taste buds sing! It's very nostalgic for me I guess! We had the fried quail which was an appetizer special. This was good although I'm used to eating gamey quail ( wild caught back in Kenya )! I ordered the rib eye because that's my favorite cut of meat since I like the marbling. It came with mashed potatoes and I picked sugar snap peas as my veggie. Hubby ordered the lamb with broccoli. My steak was just excellent! I would say the second best I have ever had! The best is in Gastonia, NC. The snap peas were excellent and seasoned. The mashed potatoes were so good! They actually season and spice them well, which is a nice change. My hubby's lamb was a HUGE portion which again was a nice change from normal again! It was delicious too! For dessert I obviously wanted the profiteroles. Oh my! They were so good! I could've had more even though I was busting at the seams! The fudge sauce on them was really good. I usually hate the fudge sauce drizzled into desserts because it tastes like it's straight out of a bottle. This one actually tasted like melted chocolate! Yummy! Mid January and we had a 20 minute wait! So that says something right there. Very friendly staff, host, and we were seated in a nice quiet area. Our waitress came promptly with menus and took our drink order. We ordered appetizers first, I got the wedge salad(not really appetizer), it was half a head, excellent dressing , took half home for the next day. Dinner I ordered chicken piccata served with mashed potatoes and green pea pods. Everything was excellent. We highly recommend giving it a try, next time we'll try the prime steaks for sure. read more

I have been spoiled by the DC food scene, so the restaurants in outer banks just didn't cut it for me. Typical of tourist heavy areas, very few restaurants actually served decent food and if you take a peek at the menus at different joints, you'll notice that they all served the exact same type of food, your typical safe familiar American fare plus the optional raw bar due to proximity to the ocean. JK's was one of the better restaurant in the area. We started the meal with some warm and freshly baked bread that was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Fresh bread always give patron a good first impression (I hate places that serve stale and old bread. Its down right insulting to think that guests would even want to fill up on crappy bread). Our waitress raved about the seared tuna appetizer, but it turned out to be a failure. The tuna was not seasoned or served with any kind of sauce other than 3 dollops of wasabi and a cucumber salad. It was quite bland compare to a traditional tuna tataki. The aged filet I ordered was cooked perfectly, juicy and tender, although I wish it came with a bordelais or cognac pepper cream sauce on the side. The mashed potato was fairly standard, not amazing, but it was fresh and made with real red bliss potato. The green bean was a little on the tough side, but the bacon vinaigrette was flavorful. JK's offered quality ingredients, but the overall preparation was rather uninspiring. Stick to the meat and potatoes when you come here and skip the more exotic items like seared tuna. read more

My husband and I came here for our anniversary dinner. It was pretty busy so we decided to wait at the bar until til our table was ready. Turns out we were able to order our food there. My husband got a new your strip and I got the JKs special, which was surf and turf. We both agreed that the shrimp was the best part of the meal. I also got a Caesar salad with fried oysters. Super tasty. I really liked that they didn't put my sauce all over my food. It was all on the side so you can determine how much you want. I didn't quite care for the sauce that came with the meal, so it worked out. The mash potatoes were so good. My husband said his New York strip was a little on the rarer side of medium, my filet was super tender. The only real downside was it was really cold in there. So happy to have a cloth napkin to cover my legs with. It was also pretty pricey for what you get. I have had better stakes that cost much less. I've also had much worse. We left satisfied and with leftovers. We would definitely try it again. Maybe not order a steak. read more
