It's nice to have a popular Taiwanese bakery so close to home. Although it's not as big, packed and impressive as my recent visit to 85C, this will surely take care of my carb cravings. The employees are constantly bringing out freshly baked breads & buns to restock the shelves. If it's your first time, be adventurous and try something new. If you're a returning patron, and don't see your favorite buns, ask an employee to check the back. You can also place orders to be picked up later. In the mornings, they serve fresh & hot pork buns, which are awesome. I see a lot of non-Asians and judging from the way they grab a tray and get busy with loading it, word has definitely gotten out this is a great place to sample very tasty breads. One thing I like about JJ over 85C: When fresh items come out of the kitchen @ JJ, they're already bagged, as opposed to 85C where we place the baked goods on a possibly dirty tray before being bagged by the employee. Also, the prices are overall lower than 85C. JJ shares the same parking lot as Ding Tai Fung, Phoenix and other popular joints so unless you're there for lunch, wait til after 2 for the lot to open up. read more

Good Taiwanese bakery and breakfast. The soymilk, rice milk, and almond milk are fresh and flavorful. They do not dilute the drinks with water so you get more of the good stuff. There's a variety of bread throughout the day, but they tend to run out when it's closer to the closing time. Come here for traditional Taiwanese breakfast. The onion pancakes and egg pancakes are delicious with the garlic sauce. The specialty rice roll comes with sausage and egg. The Asian fried long cruller is perfectly fried and goes well when you dip it in soymilk. Try to go at least 20 minutes before 10am if you want to enjoy your breakfast at the tables there because they will kick you off the tables and chairs after 10am when they put the tables away. Be careful of what you eat here. We bought the almond brittle snacks a few days ago. I was in the middle of eating a piece when I saw something sticking up. See pictures. Wtf is this?!! I almost put that in my mouth. Felt so sick when I saw it. Bleeeech. Spat everything out and rinsed my mouth a few times. We ordered from here numerous times. But we are super disappointed on this vanilla chiffon cake. We normally ordered chocolate chiffon cake and it is normally fresh. Bought a birthday cake without requesting it ahead of time and I was concerned that during the pandemic cakes that have been sitting in their window may not be as fresh. However I took a chance and wandered in and bought one - and was pleased that the fruits on top were sweet and fresh, cake had a nice texture, and the layer of custard pudding and taro paste/red bean within the cake were nicely separate, distinct layers. The white chocolate shell on the outside of the cake looked nice and holds firm but is just soft enough to cut cleanly when I used my kitchen knife to slice the cake. The red ribbon tied around the cake added a nice touch. Box is pretty and sturdy with handles, and cake stayed perfectly intact on my drive home. read more

We purchased a Fruit Coffee Chiffon cake (I think that's the name) for my grandmother's birthday. Parking is hectic but I was fortunate enough to get a spot right in front. They only had 4-5 different cakes which weren't enough to choose from, but for some reason my little cousin chose this cake. The total was exactly $26. I've only tried their cake, and it was terrible. It was completely dried out, it tasted like it had been on display for weeks. Nobody enjoyed the cake at the birthday party. I was really disappointed. While I waited in line, I looked around at the other pastries. They looked okay, but this bakery reminds me a lot of 85. This was my first experience with JJ and I'm assuming JJ has been around a lot longer than 85. Walking into this store, nothing seemed too appetizing. They really need to revamp this place. My go to place for birthday cakes- the other one is Porto's. I love how delicate their cakes look and their price is pretty reasonable. We ordered a custom cake with strawberries only on sponge cake with a layer of strawberry vanilla custard and it came out light, fluffy, and very delicious. Best part was it was only around $33, and that's the custom price. Since they make their cakes on site, I was able to get the cake fresh out of the kitchen within 20 minutes of getting there- even though I told them before hand I was going to arrive an hour later. We've also ordered the red bean cake with fruits before, as well as some other ones too, and they always come out fantastic. The only thing was that they primarily speak mandarin and while I love that, it can be hard to place and order with them if you are an exclusive English speaker. I came here to try the lunch combo. I got the braised pork rice, bamboo shoot and pork meat ball soup. The braised pork rice is pretty good (4/5), the soup and the bamboo shoots are ok (3/5). Overall it's a tiny bit salty. Iight come back for the rice but probably won't get the combo anymore. Their bread are good and a bit cheaper than 85C. My favorite is sticky rice and minced pork rice. @bakery in JJ- fresh and consistent, sold out in the late afternoon. Funny is that 85C doesn't across JJ Bakery territory yet, despite they are very similar on what they offer. You cannot really go wrong on both, is really depend on your location. As JJ from Good Times would say, this place is "Dyno-mite!" This was my first time venturing out to Arcardia to try Din Tai Fan and while waiting in the queue, I noticed JJ Bakery in the same parking lot. I walked in this Chinese influenced bakery and was extremely impressed with all the baked goods and the take out food. Although I love 85C, I found JJ's a very close second because their taro with butter milk bun $1.30 was outstanding! It had just enough buttery taste with a flaky dough and taro in the middle. I ate it as my DTF appetizer and regretted not buying more. I also like the fact they didn't have the pushy crowds, everything was pre-wrapped and organized. I've been anxiously waiting to visit JJ Bakery ever since Michelle T wrote her 5 stars review about their wonderful sweets and treats. I finally had the chance to stop by this Chinese bakery with fellow Yelpers David N, Antho L, Tony Y. Jr, and Ching T. Since then, I was so impressed by their sweet buns that I immediately made another visit with Ching T to get a second impression. Both visits were 5 stars worthy as this bakery was able to demonstrate their superiority on the following dimensions that makes a Chinese sweet bun worthwhile: Texture and bread density, fillings and sweetness, incidental air pockets, creativity, longevity, and affordability. Red bean bun with mochi (1.25): The surrounding baked buns were soft and fluffy with a thick chewy layer of white mochi inside with sweet red beans fulfilling the core without air pockets. The mochi tasted fresh and the load of red beans had perfect texture. It was bomb. Brown sugar with logan bread ($2.25): Freshly baked bread with a pronounced logan flavor with a pleasant hint of brown sugar in the backdrop. The bread was heavier than a regular sweet bun but the degree of moisture was able to maintain the logan flavor and its overall freshness. Taro bread ($1.00): The texture was moist, soft, and fluffy with naturally sweetened mushy taro generously filling the core with no air pocket. The quality of the whipped airy taro nicely captured its sweet essences that are often missing in the breads from other bakeries. Taro steamed bun ($1.25): This white, steamed bun was soft and delicious with a similar taro filling without a hint of artificial flavor. I can eat these all day. Mango mochi ($2.75): A thin, sticky layer of mochi wrapped around a sizable sponge cake stacked with a load of chunky sweet mango and whipped cream. It was the most creative mochi I've ever came across with the mango shortcake embedded at the center. Super yummy! Raisin bun ($1.35): The raisin bun was the heaviest with the most density of all the ones experienced. It had solid texture and lots of sweet raisin scattered throughout. This bread tasted on the healthier side and it was the one that I didn't care too much for. Custard bread ($1.00): The custard was very smooth and semisweet with good moisture on the bread. Again, none of their buns had air pockets which puts them above and beyond the likes of Kee Wah and Sheng Kee. Based on the strengths and limitations mentioned above, they rank at the top when each of the dimensions was considered separately but also in the ways that they were all creatively put together. These breads were all made fresh on the day and were still outstanding one or two days after. Thanks to the Queen of Sweets and my SoCal expert on dessert places, I've finally found a bakery that has won me over in so many different ways. read more
