Such a Generic name that doesn't hint or celebrate its Greek heritage or menu, why? If not a local, how many more looking for a twist on your American grill/steakhouse, might try you on for size? Owner's Yelp About Business info doesn't clue you in either that the Grille has Greek roots and menu influence. By digging to see the names Taras, Dimitri, and (Jim) Katsoutes, the original owner of Jim's downtown 1921 would you guess, and as a 3rd gen family business they obviously have a following. And after that buildup, just not us, albeit that we all ordered fish. With ribs in town, limiting the week's caloric uptake was a check for the ticker ;) Shrimp cocktail $21 comes with 1/2 doz long & large, grilled with a steak like pepper seasoning, ie Grecian, served warm in cold cocktail sauce edged by bibb lettuce that looks great in a stainless cocktail stem, but no one was eating haha. 3.75/5* but my BIL who is a local, person always gets. For him it's a 5. Greek Salad $24 with salmon aok but again BIL loves this place. Norwegian Salmon entree $27 was overcooked, ordered rare and blackened, and not spicy at all. Entree comes with 2 sides; hubby chose a side salad which was just blah spring greens, tomato, cuke and croutons, but a cloyingly sweet balsamic dressing didn't help either despite 3 lemon wedges. Better option would be if they offeres a Greek side salad. Mash, the other side was fine. 3.5/5* Halibut fresh catch of day $37 is about 6-7oz asked for chargrilled, it was more delicate like cod, lacking the flakey firmness and oilier flavor or halibut. Select your sauce: a Mediterranean-- feta roma red onion, but a light hollandaise? & bacon??..is that a TN thing to add bacon to everything lol. Or the Creole with Parmesan, again why add Cheese/fat to a sauce that should be perfect without? the Lemon Garlic is butter based so whileI hoped for 2 great sauces, I steered to a heart healthier olive oil & oregano blend on the side. But it was just kinda oily without fruitiness or burny polyphenols of EVOO; the Lemon wedge was best. Turnip Greens cooked with ham hock, was not noticeable--fine by me, cooked down to texture of canned spinach and not at all bitter. Liked this the best, shockingly lol. Really wanted to try the Grecian rice but it's cooked in yes, butter, that fat suck again sigh, with Chix broth topped with a tomato Greek spice. So stuck to a plain Baked Idaho tater dressed down skinny sans bacon n cheese. 3.5/5* Good pour of Sazerac Rye in Old Fashioned. Full glass of little rocks suck though vs the signature big block ice for pro's, that waters it too quickly and visually no comparison. 3/5* $14.42 ok, but sticker shock another $4.20 additional Liquor Tax for 2 drinks, damn. I am sure the full duty Hickory n Oak grilled Lamb Chops & steaks are great but nearing $60 I'd choose elsewhere based on our fish dishes, while edible were not worthy of the billing and nothing we'd crave, ditto for the sides. Too bad because the true Greek influence has been buttered, cheesed, and baconed out. Dining Room is busy and energetic which is always good, lots of waitstaff, moody medium and dark brown decor, quite inviting. Haven't been here in quite some time. I wanted a steak, we were going somewhere else, but saw the this, and changed it up. Obviously no reservation, but we only waited two minutes for a quiet table in a back dinning room. Bottom line, my petite filet totally hit the spot. It was cooked perfectly and very tasty. Hands down one of the best restaurants in town! My spouse ordered the NY strip, brussels sprouts, and crab cakes home. The steak was prepared at medium rare temperature and the Brussels sprouts had a savory glaze on them. Everything was delicious! My spouse and I will be returning soon! read more

This place is really good if not inconspicuous. Located in a strip mall setting it belies a long history in Memphis. The Souflina appetizer is pork loin with lemon and oregano and it honestly one of the best surprises I recall, way better than I might try to guess. Service is great. The halibut special with home fries and turnip greens just killed. It's destination worthy for a suburban location. read more

Visited while in town, brought here by locals who speak highly of it. The space looks nice and the staff were polite and professional. That said, the food didn't quite match the reputation (or the price point). I don't mind paying for a quality meal, but I'd expect the food to deliver at this level. The fish special was verbally described as halibut. What arrived had a noticeably oilier texture, darker flesh, and a flavor profile quite different from any halibut I've had before. I'm not suggesting anything intentional, but it's possible it was simply a different variety such as Greenland turbot, which is sometimes marketed as halibut. The Parmesan chicken was fair but a bit dry. One small note: our server mentioned the moussaka was no longer on the menu. If it's been removed, it's probably better left unmentioned rather than brought up and then taken off the table. The restaurant has a lot going for it in terms of atmosphere and service. I'd hope the kitchen can match that on a consistent basis. read more

Ventured out to Collierville Tuesday for my retired teacher club. 13 of us dined in for lunch. We also had a gift exchange as we waited for our food. Service was awesome from the onset of planning this luncheon. Jay and Kristy were so patient as our reservation and numbers kept fluctuating. They were so nice to adjust as we went along. Chris and Drew were our waiters. They were super busy but took good care of all of us. The decor of the restaurant is so stylish and cozy. It is quite large with different areas for private dining. Everyone was so nice and kind. I ordered the club sandwich which was massive! I ended up taking half of it home because I ordered calamari for the table. The club came with a choice of sides. I got spinach which was light and seasoned well. The calamari was excellent. The remoulade sauce was spicy and complemented the squid very well. There were also fried green tomatoes with the dish. The calamari was fried to perfection and overall so delicious. I forgot to take a oic of the calamari. Oops! I will definitely return to try other entrees and dishes. read more

It's just ok. Very stuffy place- if you don't have a reservation you are looked down upon. Took some time to even be noticed at the bar. Locals are given preferential treatment. Consistently an all-around great experience, located in what I consider to be a blackhole for restaurants focusing on what they do best, and doing it well. The location of this restaurant is phenomenal and easy to make a reservation. I believe you can walk in without a reservation. The restaurant is large they have several sections if you need to host a private party. There is a full bar with high tops. The lighting was low so if it's a date night, friends or family it's a great place to dine. Our server was great, very attentive and constantly checked on the quality of our meal. Normally the chef wouldn't recommend cooking the chops well done unless they lollipop them. This was an automatic suggestion from the server which told us he is well trained and experienced. The pricing was reasonable. The only reason for the 1 star deduction is my pasta was a little under season. Other than that we will return and try something else on the menu. read more

Wow. I can't believe that I have never written a review for this place. We have been coming here for many years. We used to visit the one on Summer while it was there way back when. Jim's is old school Memphis Dining. I love it! It's just upscale enough to be sort of fancy, but not pretentious feeling or costly beyond what they should be. Prices are very fair and you will get what you pay for every time. Steaks, seafood, soups, salads, desserts, all of it is really good... except the blackened catfish, it sucks, don't get it. Every single other thing I have had was GREAT! Wait, Grecian Rice sucks too, but that's it. Check out my food pics. I have taken a ton over the years here. The Lamb Chops are very special as are the steaks. I love the oysters and the shrimp appetizers a lot. Soups knock it dead every time. I love it. My wife loves it. So therefore it will remain in the line up of places I frequent. There is no shortage of restaurants in Memphis. There is a shortage of really good ones with solid service and a nice atmosphere. Everyone has a bad day, so if you get one here, try again. You should be rewarded with something special eventually. Call me, I'll go with you, especially if you are buying. read more

Grabbed a quick lunch with a business associate. As a native of New Orleans, I know a little bit about Gumbo and PoBoys. Enjoyed a Gumbo that a rich, deep, well seasoned Creole flavor; a PoBoy with perfectly fried and succulent shrimp. Came here to celebrate a birthday. The place was very busy and looks to be a popular spot. We had reservations and did not have to wait for a table. The wait staff were very friendly. We ordered appetizers that were hot and quite tasty. Our entrees for the most part were good, however the filet was dry and overcooked. It appeared they cut into the middle of the filet during cooking, which probably was the issue. The other steaks came out perfect. read more

I suppose it is not the best advertising to have patrons leaving your establishment on an ambulance stretcher. Having done just this, felt duty-bound to report my lunchtime experience here up to and including fainting. Was.. The pork loin appetizer and the potato leek soup I had both excellent. My sudden dizziness. had nothing to do with the food, and the staff, especially Patrick, could not have been kinder or more solicitous toward me as we awaited the ambulance.. I only found out at the hospital that they had not charged us for our very delicious meal. So kudos , Jim's place! you're fine folks with fine food. And I highly recommend you.. My recent visit here was a 10/10. I needed a place that could accommodate a large party for a going away dinner. Thankfully, Jim's place was more than accommodating. Upon walking in, our party was instantly greeted and seated. Our server was not only hospitable, but he engaged with our table, and made awesome recommendations. He was simply AMAZING. The food was good, mine wonderful and the ambiance very nice. Two of us had the 2 different beef liver dinners and they loved them. My wife ordered the beef burger which was very tasty and cooked perfect to order. I had black grouper dinner with crab and bearnaise sauce atop it. So good and not overcooked! The Italian spinach was delicious and seemingly not too cheesy or garlicky. (is that actually a word?) The server was very knowledgeable and accommodating and provided pleasant conversation. Since we have moved away, it has been a couple years since we have had the pleasure of dining at Jim's Place Grill. This past weekend we went with 8 friends and had a tremendous experience. First our server Will was perfect. He was attentive, he knew the menu and the food, he got everything right and he even did the complicated job of splitting the bill perfectly. The restaurant was bustling as usual, giving a real feeling of being at a hot spot in terms of food and social credibility. But the real test is the food, and as usual, Jim's came through for every single person at our table. For starters the Seared Ahi Tuna and the Phyllo Puffs (mix of Tiropetakia and Spanakopetakia) were all excellent. The salads were crisp and fresh. My wife loved her crab cakes and I loved the family recipe Souflima. I highly recommend that you order it with Grecian Rice as one of the sides because they are a perfect flavor mix. My friend next to me had the Whole Carolina Flounder flash fried and he let me taste it - wow, good. I believe this restaurant could be a thriving success whether located in New York, LA, Las Vegas, Fort Worth, Chicago or any foodie town. It is just well done. read more

When your take-out order goes ALL WRONG, I hope you get the same level of interest and care that was just delivered (literally) to us from Jim's Place Grille. We normally wouldn't get take-out from a high-end restaurant, but we wanted a nice dinner, because my husband is still recovering from knee surgery, so there was no other option. After waiting for an hour for an order that should have taken 15 minutes, we got home and our food was completely unacceptable for a multitude of reasons. I reluctantly called to speak with a manager who was clearly appalled, and within 20 minutes, he had a very pleasant gentleman DELIVER to us a completely remade meal that was as perfect as we originally expected. Excellent experience. We had a large group and we were seated and the waitresses were on it! It was a Monday night but the place still had a good crowd. We had a limited menu due to the size of our group but the appetizers from the grilled shrimp to the calamari were very good. I ordered the Norwegian salmon and I told them I had a garlic allergy and they took very good care of me. The salmon was delicious. Pro tip- the grilled veggies are better than the mashed potatoes. It was grilled zucchini and squash. Really good. The wine list is good and they have a few beers on tap. The desserts looked good but I didn't have one. The servers were excellent! I was seeing one star review so I was worried but when we went 6/22/24 was I wrong every thing was delicious . Had the calamari and I've had plenty of times at other places in my life and that was the best. I had the T bone steak and my wife had the salmon with a bunch of delicious sides.
