This restaurant has been a local favorite for 17 yrs. It has a small, clean, casual interior. Most of the menu is on the board behind the bar. The server was nice, attentive and knowledgeable. They serve beer and wine - no cocktails. I especially liked that they provide bread and butter right away. We started with their version of shumai - basically shrimp and pork ravioli. We all enjoyed it, but felt $19 was a lot for this appetizer. For our mains, we ordered shrimp etouffee, duck, and eggplant parmesan. The duck was the highlight, but not a hearty portion. The eggplant parm consisted of three slightly too thick fried slices of eggplant topped with some sauce and cheese. It tasted good, but was a little difficult to cut. For dessert, they had 2 simple options. We went with ice-cream with bananas and chocolate in a pastry shell. It was delicious and enough to share. We've been here several times and it never disappoints. We had ceviche and conch fritters for apps. Both were phenomenal. Probably 2 ppl could have shared 1. They have a great menu. We chose the fresh fish specials- seared ahi in an Asian sauce with rice and snapper in beure blanc with jasmine rice and zucchini. This place is wine only but they have a tremendous selection. Jimmy's Bistro is a welcoming restaurant that's nice in an understated kind of way with an eclectic menu and friendly staff and while it doesn't have a full bar the bottle of wine we ordered was fine and a good recommendation. A Tuna Tartare appetizer was no better or worse than other local restaurants but the Lobster Dumplings were excellent and the sauce was both light and complex. It's nice to see that Jimmy's uses Captain Clay's, a local purveyor of fish rather than a national distributor and Tilefish was on the menu. The fish was mild but slightly dry and while it was good I was expecting better. However a Chicken fried Chicken was surprisingly good and made it even better with excellent mashed potatoes. Chocolate dessert was fine but what's up with using Haagen Dazs Ice Cream? Haagen Dazs of course is a mid range mass produced brand that was cleverly marketed to seem vaguely European despite it starting in a large Bronx factory. There are local ice cream companies that are far superior and the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Shop right across the street is better. With so many restaurants along adjacent Atlantic Avenue, Jimmy's Bistro is a good choice. read more

A true hidden gem! This is the cutest bistro in Delray. We were introduced to this place by good friends and we enjoyed it from beginning to end. Our favorite place to park is the Arts Garage which is a few minutes away. Walk is about 5 mins. There is street parking available. Customer service was good. The pear salad was very fresh with a beautiful light homemade dressing. The bread was nice and soft. I ordered the bolognese and the flavor was out of the world. The noodles were cooked perfectly! We had a strawberry tart for dessert and it was sooooooooooooooo good! Fresh vanilla nice cream with strawberries on top of a balsamic glaze and a nice pastry. I asked for more bread but was never given anymore. At the time of my request there were two small ends left in the basket which I was going to eat with my pasta anyways. The lady pointed out that I had more bread in my basket. I finished it by the time she came back with some sauce and she still didn't bring me more bread. The restaurant is quite tight and small. My husband and I walked in for a 5:45 reservation for 4. Before our guests got to the restaurant, the first words out of the women behind the counter was, "your name" and if your party isn't on time we have timed seating, just letting you know. Okay, so how do I answer that. I answered that it's actually my friends birthday. Very off putting as an initial welcome. As it turned out, my friend was very ill and couldn't make it to the restaurant. My husband and I had our meal. We were out at 6:45. No problem. We ordered tomato with mozzarella (extremely fair....tomatoes were hard and mozzarella tasted like it was from the supermarket, balsamic was good), my chicken Milanese was also fair, and my husbands eggplant parm was hard and thick (yuck). We came to use a gift certificate that my husband won and happy to come across this gem of a place. It's quaint and was packed for a Wednesday! We grabbed a bar seat for two and ordered Rigatoni Bolognese and Chicken Milanese. The pasta was cooked al dente and the chicken was very crispy, but a little overcooked and dry. Still edible and good enough but for $36 I expected perfection. We will definitely come back, but maybe on a day that isn't so gorgeous out because all the seating is indoors unfortunately. The food at Jimmy's is pretty good. Not crazy about the vibe (lighitng is FAR too bright to present a calming and relaxing vibe). This COULD be a very good restaurant. But the collective input from the party of 10 I was with was unanimous. The service was awful. The bartender / server at the bar was horrible. She just seemed miserable. She wasn't remotely friendly and seemed like she would rather be anywhere else but there. She was short-tempered, easily triggered and really seemed like she should not be in the service industry. The food was good. Very good, in fact (I loved the sauce they used on the rigatoni). My only complaint food-wise was that the bread they served was burnt. Despite the good food, the entire group of us will never return to this restaurant based solely on the service. On the Avenue in Delray, there are over 20 restaurant options. Jimmy's Bistro really needs to step it up service-wise if it wants to compete with the others. read more

The food was just good, not excellent. I ordered the short ribs- they were tender but the gravy/sauce was one dimensional and boring. My husband ordered the duck. He said the Asian glaze was too sweet and also one dimensional.He also got the shaomai pork dumplings which he felt were flavorless and mushy. The restaurant is very small with tables jammed together. This could be cozy except for the rushed and cold demeanor of the staff. When we first arrived there was no one to greet us but the woman behind the bar. Our table was not ready so we went to the empty bar for a drink. She didn't welcome us but said we couldn't sit in any of the empty seats at the bar because they were reserved. We ordered a drink and waited for our table outside on the sidewalk. When we were sat at our table, all of the bar seats were still empty. Our waiter's rushed manner seemed more interested in getting us fed and out of there. For the price point, I think you can find better choices for food, atmosphere and service in Delray. read more

Last night was my first time dining at Jimmy's Bistro and I'm honestly sad it took me so long to discover it. Nestled around the corner from the tin roof on a dark street, it's easy to miss, but when you walk in you instantly feel at home due the cozy atmosphere. Our server was super friendly and gave us details all of the specials. We tried the pork dumplings, stuffed zucchini flowers, chicken fried chicken, roasted duck, tile fish and a balsamic strawberry dessert Each of the entrees were delicious. The items that really stood out to me were: the duck which came with a velvety mushroom orange sauce that was TDF and the chicken with amazing garlic mashed potatoes reminded me of my hometown, Minneapolis. We went for dinner the other day with high expectations. For a restaurant at this price point a cloth napkin would have been nice. The Malbec by the glass was not very good. The salad, tuna tartar, and egg rolls were very good. The veal francese was tough and not too flavorfull. As described by other reviewers an intimate cafe with well done comfort food. Our waiter tonight could not have been nicer. Just a few caveats: 1) parking can be a problem. We parked in the Library parking lot a block west of the restaurant at about 6:30 PM on a Saturday. No problem. By 8:30 the lot was almost full. Forget about getting on street parking. 2) They do not have printed menus. From where we were seated the chalk board menu was basically hidden. Check their website before you go so that you can scan the menu at your leisure. On site there may be a few changes. 3) The deserts we found too sweet. We wished we had skipped them. Had dinner there last night after hearing wonderful things about the food. VERY expensive. Three of our main courses cost between $44 and $48. Food was ok but certainly not great. An order of Duck which the waitress informed us was the most popular dish. Skin was not crispy at all and when it was mentioned they deducted $12 from original price of $48. Bread in basket was no more than 6 small pieces nicely toasted. A glass of Malbec came and tasted like vinegar. It was returned and waitress took it back with out saying anything but did come back later and acknowledged it was bad. Never happened to us in 40 years of dining out. Chef Jimmy, Julie and the team present an intimate, chef driven menu with favorite blackboard items locally sourced and fresh caught by Captain Clay & Sons. Our light starters were caesar salad, (tasted like it was made table-side) and caprese salad where the quality balsamic enhanced the house-made mozzarella and the sweetness of the vine ripened plum tomatoes. Jimmy's Bistro has a very strong neighborhood feel, with a we-welcome-all-newcomers (and non-regulars) vibe. It's a very small place a short distance away from the hubbub of Atlantic Ave, with a wide variety of apps and entrees to choose from and a good wine list. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I had the ceviche and everyone at the bar loved what they ordered. The ceviche was very fresh tasting (I think they get fresh catch from a local fishing boat Captain). The bowl of ceviche was surrounded by delicious, thinly sliced, large, homemade chips. Myself and 4 other people dined here last night. We were the first table served, so it was not busy. I am so disappointed with the entire experience. I ordered a glass of pinot grigio, which arrived tepid. My friend ordered the ceviche, which was so salty it was impossible to eat. My chicken milanese was ok, saltly and covered with a dry parmesan cheese, and slightly overcooked. The bolognese and the eggplant were also covered with the inferior parmesan cheese. I've been to Jimmy's once before and was thoroughly impressed with the food. I remembered that I finished my entire entree as it was finger licking good! It's been a few years since that trip, so I decided to take my boyfriend on a date here. Arriving on a Thursday night, the small restaurant was busy and short-staffed. They only had two people tending to all of the tables there. We were asked to pick a table to sit at. We, a party of 2, headed over to a 4 top as we knew we were going to order quite a few items. The waitress told us she'd rather we sit at a 2 top. We moved over per her request. We ended up ordering 3 appetizers and 2 entrees as we felt that 3 entrees wouldn't fit on our small table. I like that they save money where it counts and put their efforts into their food. For example, they don't have printed menus. They have a chalkboard with the menu written on it. This changes when they switch out items. The only tough part was we were sitted in a corner. We had to get up, walk around people, just to read the menu. Had to stand there pretty long as my boyfriend is an indecisive person. We decided to order the empanadas, shrimp ravioli, and ceviche for our appetizers. These were so delicious! I really would give it a 5 star if it wasn't for the poor service we received that night. The ravioli appetizer had a delicious sauce that accompanied the dish. The shrimp inside was a whole shrimp and they looked more like dumplings. The chips and ceviche was also a good combination of red peppers, fish, onions and cilantro. The empanadas were very small and not worth the $12, although tasty. After we finished our appetizers, they decided to bring us some warm bread. The timing felt off. Should've had these first? For our main entrees, we ordered the shrimp etoufee with balsamic rice and a chicken dish. The etoufee sauce is a sauce I've grown to love living in New Orleans. Unfortunately their sauce wasn't as tasty as it felt watered down. I liked that it came with whole mushrooms. Throughout the dinner, anytime we needed something and asked our waitress, she would answer something along the lines of "I'll be there in a bit". She was much kinder to a party of 4 elders sitting next to us. We didn't flag her down much but the two times we did, she made it seem as if we were not important or worth her time. I love Jimmy's! It's like walking into your friends house. Always a warm ambiance with good, reliable food and friendly service. Last night however the Asian sauce on my fish tasted straight out of a bottle and a cheap one at that. It won't stop me from going back but I'll probably stick with the beurre blanc sauce.
