Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ

I was flying out of Memphis a few weeks ago, and stopped by Interstate BBQ at the airport. I generally like Interstate BBQ, but not the one at the airport. I ate there in the morning and that evening I began having symptoms of an intestinal infection that lasted 2 weeks. Now I don't know for certain whether or not this specific food caused it, so you should take my claim with a grain of salt. But that said, it is the only cooked food I remember eating that day, so it is the most likely suspect. read more

You don't expect this level of quality, all over your face bbq to be found in an airport, and yet it's true. It's about the only thing I enjoy about having to change planes in Memphis on the way to middle of nowhere Columbia, MO. Yum, yum, yum. And they don't skimp on the portions. But if you're rushing, it's not going to happen, because the lines are long and they move slow. Also, customer service isn't their specialty. But that doesn't stop me from paying high airport prices for bbq smothered meat. read more

More of a 3.5. I paid $11 for a mini sweet potato pie and a huge plate consisting of half a bbq chicken, a large side of beans, a large side of potato salad, and 4 slices of sandwich bread. Everything was very good. The chicken was fall off the bone, but not as juicy as I was hoping. The chicken breast portion was small and a little dry. The bbq sauce was very good, but a little too sweet. I thought the beans were a little overcooked, and I did not like that my beans spilled over onto the chicken. The potato salad was good, too. I ate the sweet potato pie 3 days after purchasing it. The filling was great, but I did not like the crust very much. The service was excellent. My server was very sweet and helpful. read more

When my husband and I want the best ribs in Memphis we go to Interstate BBQ. The restaurant itself has a lot of seating and is always clean. The thing keeping me from giving this a 5 star review is that the service is very slow. Expect to be there for more than an hour, with at least 20 of those minutes spent waiting to be served. This is a tourist-y destination, especially on the weekends so if you go there on a weekend I recommend going for lunch rather than dinner. read more

I never give a review this low, but this place is pretty weak even for an airport restaurant. Ordered the Bar-B-Q turkey salad with ranch dressing. Yes, I know I should have gotten something more traditional, but it shouldn't be on the menu if they can't do it right. The turkey was great, the lettuce was wilted and soggy, the bacon bits were imitation, and the dressing was prepackaged. Go to Lenny's instead. read more

Such a disappointment. I set my expectations low considering this was in the airport, but even then I was still surprised just how poorly executed their ribs were done. They were dry and the sauce was tasteless. I initially felt confident because a number of pilots and stewardesses were ordering from her and I figured with the amount of time they spend at MEM they would know the best places to go. Oh well. Maybe some of their other dishes are better but I won't make the mistake of ordering their ribs again, that's for sure. read more

Walking through the airport looking for a lunch spot, I knew I had to try this place as soon as I saw it. The pork ribs did not disappoint. The sauce flavor and consistency were great and the meat was tender and fell easily from the bone. I also had the potato salad, which was a little too creamy for me, and the biscuit wasn't worth eating. Prices are reasonable and the service was quick and friendly. Got off the plane and I could immediately smell the BBQ. Unfortunately it wasn't from this restaurant. The sandwich was packed with meat (good thing), but there was a distinct lack of BBQ sauce - to the point of being dry. The included little thimble full of additional sauce didn't go very far. The bun was good, but compressed like paper by the time the wrapper was applied. read more

Foods pretty good. I wouldn't say it lives up to the claim of being the "best" as the advertising suggests. That's not so much because the food isn't the best bbq I've had, I've had much better. It's really more of the very indifferent attitude of the people that work there. They certainly don't like thier job and spill that demeanor over to thier interaction with customers. To be clear, they weren't rude to me. But, I certainly didn't feel like they were happy to see me spend my money there so they in turn would have a job and keep the business open. read more

Although I really wanted bbq it was only 9am and I noticed the biscuits and gravy and decided to give it a shot. I wouldn't have generally ordered this dish at a bbq joint but I heard you can't really get a bad dish at Jim Neely's. I got an order of biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns and coffee and only paid $7, not too bad for airport fare . The hashbrowns were 3 sticks of delicious deep fried goodness and the coffee was good coffee, nothing incredible but not bad. The biscuit was soft and flaky topped with a sausage patty and COMPLETELY smothered in sausage gravy, not the couple of tablespoons some places like to like to jip you with. If the bbq is anywhere as close to how good the B&G were, I can't wait to get back there. They do serve the bbq in the morning if you are so inclined. read more

This place is not as good as the original location (which is one of the best meals of my life). But it cannot be. They have to truck the slow cooked meats from the restaurant and keep them warm. You can taste the detriment to the meat, versus something right off the smoker. That said, the bbq spaghetti is on point, and I will stop in for this every time I pass through this airport. read more

I had to see what all the buzz was about I had heard about, and Central BBQ did not disappoint. The smell of smoke hits you before you walk in and the food lives up to the reputation. It tasted like it was missing seasoning and didn't have much flavor on its own. The sauce was really needed to give the meat some flavor. I wanted to give the restaurant another chance, so I went back later that day to try the ribs. I ordered them half dry and half wet. Unfortunately, the ribs were dry and did not fall off the bone. Just like the pulled pork, they really depended on the sauce for flavor. The baked beans were okay at best, while the turnip greens were actually pretty good, although they were a little too salty for my taste. Overall, I was disappointed with the food. I wanted to like this place, but neither the pulled pork nor the ribs impressed me. For $36, I expected much more, and based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend it.

They have all the Memphis classics (ribs, BBQ sandwiches, etc.) but even more variety than most, including: BBQ Spaghetti, Rib Tips, Sausages, Jumbo Hot Dogs, Whole Chicken, and delicious cakes -like Red Velvet & Pecan Pie! (Yes, I've tried most of these over the years! LOL) They are right of the I-55 interstate (3rd St exit). I'm frequently in neighborhood, so it's easy to order ahead. I think they have great deals on their huge BBQ sandwiches (warning -they're so good & messy!) 1-pound Rib Tips & Smoke Sausages! Simply order ahead, jump off I-55 & pick them up! You can also ask for HOT BBQ sauce (just a hint of heat -cause I'm a hot-head, but I'll take all the added heat I can get!) Free Parking! Big Parking Lot. Super-Friendly People! Delicious Food. Decent Prices. I recommend!

We invite the family over and buy a couple of slabs for take-out from one of our favorites (Interstate, Cozy Corner, and The Barbecue Shop). They rarely disappoint. I was surprised that Interstate didn't have a higher Yelp score. Could that be because of their airport restaurant? Well, I've never been to the airport restaurant, but the tried and true restaurant on Third Street hasn't disappointed us.

Ribs were delicious and fall-off-the-bone, though very slightly overcooked. Beans were excellent and the fries were addictive and crisp. Sweet tea was good. It was about 20 minutes for my meal to be ready and that was with no line (which is fine, but just an FYI). I loved Cozy Corner and am looking to return during my next Memphis visit.

I had a BBQ pork sandwich, fries, and some pork nachos. The fries were fine. Obviously frozen but they were fine. The pulled pork was pretty bad. It tasted like pre packaged pulled pork like you'd buy at the local meat department. It either came on a delivery truck or it was held for way too long under a steamer. It was soft, mushy, and had zero texture. There was no bark to speak of. The flavor was bland. The nachos were horrible. It had the same mushy pulled pork and came with the plasticky nacho cheese that you get at gas stations. It's literally the same bright yellow "cheese" that you pump on your nachos at Exxon. This is an era when even bars are deep frying tortillas to make their own chips, they make their own cheese sauce, and have an assortment of toppings. This is a bag of Brim's chips, cheese that came out of a bag, old pulled pork, and some canned Jalapenos. Very disappointing and a disservice to paying customers who want a real BBQ experience. The food is not good here. I'm not sure if any actual cooking is done onsite, or if everything comes in precooked on a delivery truck. Avoid this one.

The wings were very dry and tough, especially for the price -- which felt ridiculously high for the quality we received. On the positive side, the fries and okra were actually good, and the Kool-Aid was enjoyable as well. Those were honestly the only things I liked about the meal. For what they charge, the chicken should be much better. I don't mind paying more if the food is worth it, but this just wasn't. Hopefully it was an off day, but based on this visit, I wouldn't order the wings again. This is a totally different experience from when they had the little shack on Lamar and the grille out back.

When I go to a barbecue spot, I want to taste the smoke. NO SMOKEY TASTE. Did you oven roast your pork?? Disappointing. It was good meat without any surprise fat globs in there, so that was a plus. Beans - Seem like canned beans and they add a tiny bit of brisket to them. Definitely nothing special. Slaw - A bit weird. Yellow-ish tint. I guess they add mustard. Wasn't bad necessarily, but I prefer a good classic coleslaw. Staff was nice enough.
