Meh. A colleague mentioned this place, so I figured I'd give it a try. I got a jumbo pork sandwich plate with beans and slaw. Pulled/chopped pork sandwich - Here's the meh. When I go to a barbecue spot, I want to taste the smoke. NO SMOKEY TASTE. Did you oven roast your pork?? Disappointing. It was good meat without any surprise fat globs in there, so that was a plus. Beans - Seem like canned beans and they add a tiny bit of brisket to them. Definitely nothing special. Slaw - A bit weird. Yellow-ish tint. I guess they add mustard. Wasn't bad necessarily, but I prefer a good classic coleslaw. Staff was nice enough. read more

We love it! Friendly people, and good Memphis-style bbq. They also have great hamburgers and hush puppies.

best bet is the pork here. Meat comes dry so ask for sauce. Burgers and chicken are frozen. Beef and pork are made in house. Wasn't a fan of the seasonings or sauce and was so dry you need extra sauce to swallow. I couldn't eat more than too bites and ended up going to sonic afterwards just to not be hungry. Music too loud to talk comfortably over at table or taking orders. All ceiling fans on full blast will make you chilly quickly and need to put weight on light items to not blow around. Beans are canned and too sweet. Banana pudding price advertised is lower than price rang up. 3.09 for a tiny serving and was the fake banana flavor kind with no real fruit, whip, & 1 wafer. To each their own but after visiting a lot of bbq places around the south, this just doesn't do it for me in the bbq department. read more

I was super excited about the TN BBQ. Sadly it was just "alright". Maybe it's a preference thing but I want my ribs to practically fall off the bone... just enough "bite" left to keep them together. These ribs weren't that... mine were super tough as if they hadn't smoked low and slow enough. The baked beans and potato salad were great. I do like their sauce a lot...but not even the sauce could salvage the tough ribs. I took them back and popped them in the oven wrapped in foil and smothered them in sauce. That made them delicious... but I'm not trying to cook my take out food. read more

Great customer service and great food. The restaurant was clean. The lights were bright, and the countertop was clean also. They made my food to order, and everything was hot and fresh. I enjoyed myself because I hadn't been here since I was a little child. read more

Legit Bbq. Southern Hospitality at its best. The staff are amazing. Helpful and patient and quick to make a recommendation. Chopped pork was on point. Sides were also good. I had onion rings, potato salad and beans. Next time in town I am coming back to try the Bologna sandwich. read more

Best BBQ Nachos BRUHH THIS WAS AMAZING! Seriously, though, hubbs was pissed we hadn't come here earlier in our lives because they had the nachos he's been searching for his entire life. My philly cheese steak reminded me of the greasy deliciousness they used to serve in the Tiger Den at UoM. Full disclosure, you don't come here for healthy food. The hush puppies had bits of corn in them so they reminded me of corn fritters. Either way, nom nom nom. Everything we ate was delicious and even though we aren't BBQ people if we ever want BBQ this is where we will go. The only thing I'd change is next time I'll get water instead of coke as the food was already a bit heavy for me. Hubbs wants to get a to go pound or two of BBQ next time we visit. So many people in Cville rave about this place. I have been a handful of times and it is just ok. Friday's special is fried catfish so I was cheating today so I went for it. I ordered the catfish plate with onion rings and slaw and a drink. It took a very long time to receive my food. But ok.....I checked my order before leaving and it was piping hot so I guess they cook to order on the fish. Let me tell you, might be the best fried catfish EVER! Hot, crispy and not greasy. The onion rings and slaw were awesome too. But here is the downside. The staff is just not friendly. They aren't rude but you get the sense that you are bothering them. I had to ask for a cup for my drink that comes with my meal. I had to ask for tartar sauce. I had to ask for hot sauce. Everything just seemed so hard. Even though the food was awesome I would think twice before giving them my money. read more

We gave Captain John's a pass for several years before we decided to go. Wow we were really missing out. This place is great! They usually have a special daily. I have had the BBQ plate and the Smoked sausage sandwich. They do not skimp on what you get, I will say I won't get the smoked sausage sandwich again, not because it's not good but because you cannot pick up to eat, there is to much stuff on it. The restaurant always is clean and neat. You order at the counter and pick up at the counter when they call your number. We are going to try the burger and ribs next. read more

Ever since 93 when my dad opened up A2Z Computers across the street. We've taken notice to Captain John's & wanted to try out BBQ for the first time. After work one day my dad took me & the family out to eat. It was very impressive. I've always enjoyed their barbecue sandwiches with slaw and beans. There barbecue has always been juicy. Their sauce has always tasted great. I've never found a thing wrong with it. I've went there to eat two months ago. Nothing has changed but their expanding menu selection. I've never tried any of their new offerings but they look delicious and I may try them out sometime when I'm not in the mood for Barbecue. The cleanliness of the restaurant is impressive their staff is friendly their pitmasters and Cooks have everything on point. We absolutely loved this hidden gem. Should be featured on Triple D (Diners, Drive-in's, and Dives)! Stumbled across it when we happened to be in the neighborhood. Older restaurant but super clean. The BBQ, Fried Baloney, and Banana Pudding was all AMAZING. Food came out lightening fast and the staff was extremely friendly. Thankfully Captain John's is located right off HWY 385. That's going to make it very easy to come back many times in the future! read more

Hubby picked up two BBQ plates today for lunch. He took a bite of his sandwich and said "This is a sorry excuse for a BBQ sandwich." I tried mine and the bun was stale and maybe had 2 tablespoons of meat. It all went into the garbage. With today's prices a restaurant should try to keep customers. Was in the area and figured we would grab a quick bite to eat from the drive through, and the service from the speaker to the window attendant was great. It was our first time we ever went to Captain Johns so I was excited to try it. The From a quick glance at the menus I ordered the Chopped Sandwich, Sausage Sandwich, onion rings and hush puppies. The sandwich where average Memphis BBQ fair, nothing spectacular but still quite good. The sauce and slaw added a nice tang. The only complaint is the pork was chopped extremely fine. The star of the show was the onion rings and hush puppies. They where so fresh, and cooked perfectly. I legit would drive the 20 minutes to Colleirville just to order these two things. read more

I've always liked the bbq at this place and have never been disappointed so we've been hearing so much about the catfish special on Friday night so decided to give it a try. I can only go two stars since the $13.99 two piece plate was only so-so. The fried fish was semi crunchy on the exterior, but rubbery in texture. You have a choice of two sides...I opted for the fries (good), cole slaw (ok) and paid extra for the hush puppies which weren't good at all, I'd bet they were frozen right out of a bag. I've went to Captain Johns over the years, even recommend them as a Google guide, my picture (2014 or 2015) got over a million hits. We stopped going due to poor service and quality of food. I don't know what happened, maybe new manager or staff? I thought I would give them one more try, plus they were convenient. I called in an order, to be picked up. The order was "Wrong" waited for them to make correct order. I didn't want to wait, thats why I called it in, NOT convenient anymore. Handed my debit card over to pay for meals. MISTAKE. It was charged the time of pickup and charged same amount the next day. Yes, I said the next day it was charged again. I called- The Manager said I wasn't the first one, it happens. Went tonight for catfish and was let down, big time! The last time I had their catfish for lunch, it was amazing...but we were saddened by the chewy "warmed up in microwave" left over from lunch catfish that was not worth the $47 we paid. I get that it was between rush but still... does the staff honestly believe your customers are dumb enough not to notice microwaved catfish??? There is no other way it would be chewy if it was not microwaved! We are in the south, come on! When you pay $47 for a meal for 3, you'd expect the fresh out of the fryer, hot crispy flavorful catfish that is seasoned to perfection to be on point like your last experience but instead we could not stomach it, it was so bad :/ highly disappointed. read more

Delicious! The staff was super nice and the owner was extremely friendly and helpful. My 80 year old grandpa came in from Colorado and stopped there for dinner and came to my house raving about the food and hospitality. We ended up going a couple days later and the owner remembered my grandpa and introduced himself to my family. Very thoughtful and yummy food but wish they had Mac and cheese! I will return again and again for the nachos. You don't understand how long I've been searching for nachos with MEAT! The meat to chip ratio is amazing with much more meat than the chips. The problem with being a BBQ shop in in a BBQ town is that just ok isn't. The portions were small for the price paid with the BBQ dinner over $9 there was little meat given and while the BBQ beans were good the rest was just ok. The BBQ was pretty flavorless and was wet as if it has been keep warm and moist with steam versus being fresh from the smoker. Any seasoning or smoke there might have been was undetectable. I have been coming hereby faithfully since 1993 and they have really just kept getting better over the years. Over the past 25 years there have been some changes inside and out and I am pleased to report that the results are the best food, best selection, best environment, best service and best overall Version of Captain John's BBQ ever. The BBQ beef, pork and ribs still are smoked with the greatest care, as always but there are some other nice choices on the menu today as well. You can get a philly cheese steak sandwich and some really fantastic banana pudding, I've been asking for that one for years and It's been worth the wait, yum. The friendly, courteous and professional staff really do aim to please and they go above & beyond to make sure that you have a good experience. So take that turn off Poplar over the bridge onto the big expanded Highway 72 (it was just two small lanes back in the day) or jump off the Nonconah or 365 or whatever they call it these days (that was also not an option not that many years ago) and make your way to Captain John's to a Collierville BBQ icon, you'll be glad you did. read more

Ordered six pack barbecue deal and all they give you is a very small cup of barbecue sauce, not enough for all six sandwiches. On top of that they forgot the banana pudding I ordered so I had to pick it up the next day.
