I am in the area for work and decided to try this place for dinner. Very happy I did. When I arrived the parking lot was packed. Went inside and the front section of the restaurant was packed. I got seated at a small table in the back. They have white boards with a list of daily specials and a large chalkboard in the back that shows their beer list and desserts. After talking to the waitress, I decided on the Brisket Plate which came with Baked Beans and Cole Slaw. The food was delicious and the beer is cold. I have been wanting to try Fat Larry's for a very long time. The cool back story is that I went to college with Larry's wife Ginny. Small world for sure. The menu is definitely very extensive. Known for excellent BBQ, there are many other menu items to choose from. I had a cheeseburger to celebrate my birthday. It was cooked very well and had a good chargrilled flavor. The fries were crinkle cut which are my fav. The seasoning was tasty. We started dinner off with the hush puppies that had a pickle flavor. They were different and delicious. For dessert, I ordered the caramel cheesecake. I was pretty full from dinner so took a few bites which were heavenly! I took the rest home to enjoy. I will come back to try the BBq. read more

In Memphis, Tennessee, tourists come for barbecue and a few of the iconic places have lines out the door, but it is these local hole-in-the-wall places like Fat Larry's BBQ that you find the locals flocking to. On the particular Tuesday evening that I was there, the place was jammed with locals. I did find a parking spot and walked into the humble interior, I looked around and saw almost every table was filled with smiling faces. Looking at the menu, I had it narrowed down to either their "award winning" pork or their chicken. I asked my server which of the two she would recommend and she pointed me more towards the pork. I kept with the standard sides of beans and coleslaw. My food came out pretty quick and for the money (I believe it was about twelve dollars), they gave you a lot of food. I honestly don't understand how Fat Larry's BBQ stays busy. Every time I see a crowd, I'm convinced people's taste buds must be completely broken. The food is bland, dry, and nowhere near what real barbecue should taste like. The meat lacks flavor, the sides are forgettable, and nothing stands out except the disappointment. I kept waiting for that "wow" moment everyone seems to talk about, but it never came. There are way better BBQ spots around that actually know how to season and smoke meat properly. I live in Virginia and was visiting a friend. She told me if I wanted the best hamburger in the south then this was the place to go. She was absolutely correct. It was outstanding!! I would 100% go back. I don't get bbq cravings too often but this is the place to go when I do. Service is amazing and kind. We were seated and served quickly. The place is a bit rustic but reminds me of an awesome bbq joint. We tried the bbq sampler platter and the loaded fries. This is the best BBQ I've had in a very long time. The sauce they use is full of flavor, and it's got a thicker consistency (almost like a salsa). It goes great with chicken, ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. I got the deluxe platter so I could try all the things I could in one go. I also tried the beans, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and their bread. The beans are good, the mac is okay, their coleslaw is not the best, and their bread is really good. Thought this place was great! Was really glad I randomly got to try it. It's a small place but seems to have adequate seating and parking. They had burnt ends on the special board so I had to get them but wanted to try the ribs too. Unfortunately you can only add bones to the meal if you order steak. So that stunk. 1 star is too many but there was no 0 star option. Wife ordered the bbq baloney sandwich. The sandwich is huge so she cut it in half and only ate one half, never touched the other half. She asked for a to-go box and when she picked up the other half to put it in the box there was an old plastic bread clip on the plate under the sandwich. I told the waitress there was some kitchen garbage on my wife's plate under the food and she needed to take it off the check, we were not paying for food served to her on a plate that had garbage on it in contact with her food. The waitress got an attitude with me and said it was not garbage which sent me through the roof. I told her when the bread is gone you throw the empty bag and the clip in the garbage, so an old bread clip is definitely garbage and re-stated my demand that my wife's meal be removed from the check. she went back in the kitchen and then came back out with a new check and said she removed the sandwich from the check, then she made a big show of picking up the to-go box and telling us she would be throwing it in the trash, as if we even wanted the other half of the nasty garbage sandwich. She acted as if because my wife had eaten half the sandwich we were just making a big deal because we didn't want to pay for the sandwich. No, she never saw the bread clip until she had already eaten half the sandwich, and was thoroughly grossed out by it when she did see it. There was no way she was going to eat the other half of the sandwich at that point and there was no way we should have been expected to pay for something she was not going to finish once she realized it had been served to her on a plate with garbage on it. We have been eating here for over 15 years and have overlooked a lot of stuff just because it is close to the house and convenient, but tonight was the last straw and we will not be back. I went to Fat Larry's the other night and did not have a great experience. I got the 8 oz. Steak in a medium. I wait for not to long and get my steak looks good, I cut it open and the inside looks like it is completely uncooked. Barely even looked like steak. It's been a couple years and I needed to scout a top-10 for future visitors, so we're back. Our group got 3 orders of the grilled shrimp, another got a Hamburg and an order of chicken tenders. I'm a rib guy so got a half-rack. The shrimp were all pronounced good. The Hamburg was also, and interestingly enough, they will cook it medium rare! The ribs were merely OK - perhaps a bit overdone, but certainly not burned. The sauce was interesting - sweet and I think had some kind of fruit in it (could be wrong). The service left something to be desired. Several menu items weren't available - they tried in the past to mark over it but it's worn off. I'd suggest they start by pointing these missing items out (we seemed to find 3 of them!!). During dinner, tables and chairs were moved unnecessarily loudly in the main dining room - the staff seemed oblivious to the stares/movements of the diners. The bill was brought out without asking us for dessert, then the pie we ordered for take-out was bought out on a plate and fork. They did get our orders right, so those are minor complaints, but perhaps the manager might want a word with the staff about the customer experience. Ambience is casual. read more

I didn't read any reviews about this BBQ place. I just asked my friend to find somewhere good to get some lunch. He'd heard this was good, so I had no idea what to expect. Dashing in out of the pouring rain on a Saturday, just as they opened, we had the pick of almost any seat. Madison, our waitress was very helpful in making some great suggestions, but it came down to ... try as much as you can. So, I elected to go of the sampler, (#2 actually) which included ribs, brisket, pulled pork, 1/4 chicken and 2 sides. See the pics I posted. We also ordered some fried cheese curds, and they pooped up real quick and were fantastic. What can I say? I live in NC and I'm eating ... enjoying... feasting on the best BBQ I've eaten in ... well, a VERY VERY long time. Ribs, fall off the bone, and incredible flavor. Same for the pork, the brisket and ... the chicken was amazing too. Often dried out, this was plump and very juicy. The sides were great, and even the baked beans tried to steal the show. They have a VERY busy take out it appears too, so that's a great sign. I can't rate a restaurant a 6, I wish I could. This checked every box, good solid down to earth honest BBQ, no frills, just SOLID flavors. You get the sense that there's a craftsman (sorry, crafts-person) at work behind the scenes. You can smell the smoke outside and know it's going to be good. It does not smell like smoke inside. The first bite of my prime rib sandwich with that smoke taste made me in heaven! Add that au jus sauce and fries. Yes! I don't usually do crinkle fries because no one gets them crispy enough. They do here! I could not eat all my sandwich and shared. Other people in my party had the plate 1 and catfish bites. I tried a bite of all and very good. Oh! I loved this place, great small BBQ joint with cool stuff on the walls. I got hush puppies to start, I haven't had them and years and was really looking forward to getting some. They were awesome, nice and crispy on the outside soft on the inside. I then got the BBQ pork sandwich, it melted in my mouth, no bones, no burned or over cooked meat, just good BBQ. When you arrive, you are greeted. A table is quickly found for you. Your bill to pay arrives shortly and check out goes smoothly be nice or go home is a slogan posted on little sign. . Also there is a sign, I believe, states about cheap tippers don't go yo heaven. they not only serve barbecue but a variety of other foods.
