Combo Plate- chicken, pork, brisket.
Becky H.

As a recommendation we went here for our 1 and only night in Memphis to experience real bbq. We were so disappointed. On our plate the bbq beans were the best! The meat was all dry. The pulled chicken was the best but only with enough sauce on it. The brisket was so tough- we expected fall off the bone tender brisket from TN but this sliced tough meat was not it. With so many bbq places to choose from we would recommend trying somewhere else. I have 2 stars bc the staff was very friendly, the food came out fast, and the place has a cute ambiance!

Visiting Memphis, I was told this was the BBQ place to check out. It was conveniently located. Located behind the National Civil Rights Museum, I could smell the smoke walking up to the front door. After queueing up in front of the counter, I put in for an order of Ribs (felt like the Memphis thing to do.) It was quiet inside for a 5 PM on a Friday, perhaps I was in early before the dinner rush. I got my ribs half wet, half dry. To me, the ribs were done in the St. Louis style, where it was all about the seasoning, vs. a "fall off the bone" tenderness that is taking over social media nowadays. Talking about seasoning, I was a fan of the Mac and Cheese- often where the sides take a backseat, I was impressed to enjoy such a well seasoned side. While I didn't get a chance to try their Brisket (my gold standard for judging BBQ) the ribs show enough promise that Memphis can hold its own when it comes to 'cue.

Loved everything about Central BBQ -- can't wait to go back! The dry rub was outstanding -- amazing flavor and cooked perfectly. The pulled pork sandwich with the hot BBQ sauce? Unreal. Don't sleep on the BBQ chicken nachos, mac 'n' cheese, or green beans either Plenty of seating inside and out, and even if there's a line, the food comes out fast (like 5 minutes fast).

I wasn't too much of a fan of Central Barbecue. Coming from St. Louis and being used to great barbecue both locally and in Kansas City, I'll admit I had high expectations. It also wasn't our first choice of places to try in Memphis. Overall, it was just okay, but I did enjoy the baked beans, greens and the potato salad was probably the best. That said, if you're visiting the Civil Rights Museum nearby, it's within walking distance and a perfectly fine place to grab a meal while you're in the area.

Not too bad.

Passing through the Memphis area (I was actually across the bridge in West Memphis, Arkansas), I figured Central BBQ was probably my best bet to try some local barbecue--about as close to Nashville as I was going to get. One thing I noticed right away is that sausage or links don't seem very popular around here. They weren't on the menu, and I didn't see them at many other BBQ spots either. I ended up ordering the beef brisket plate and specifically asked for lean cuts. "Lean" must mean something completely different in this part of the country, because what I received was a pile of very thinly sliced brisket with the fat still very much intact. It was definitely... interesting to look at. I made the most of it. The BBQ sauces ranged from typical mild and hot options to a mustard-based sauce. The "hot" sauce tasted like regular BBQ sauce mixed with hot sauce--not bad, just not very distinctive. The green beans were basic, and the mac and cheese had what seemed like a light sprinkle of red pepper. Portions overall were on the small, sample-size side. With the roll, I expected a homemade offering of lovingly baked dough. What I got was what looked like store bought dinner rolls. All in all, it was just average. Honestly, the most memorable part of the meal was the local interpretation of "lean cuts."

Loved the Mac n cheese and onion rings for sides. Brisket had pretty good flavor and was quite tender, I guess I was expecting it to be a little more fatty. Service was really good and friendly, I could tell they get quite busy. It's a bit of a walk from the main downtown area but right across the street from the Civil Rights Museum.

It was all a lie. After hearing such raving reviews about the bbq in Memphis and this was highly recommended I can honestly say I was so disappointed. This was the driest brisket I have ever had. The side portions being shoved into a small container threw me off and just a Hawaiian roll. Nothing special. The brisket lacked so much flavor I used every sauce that was available, the green beans were just as bland. The baked beans were pretty decent but I just couldn't believe I paid $20 for that plate. Not much to say about the service except the bus boys were pretty efficient getting tables cleaned up and available for the next customers as there was a big rush of students. They came in right after me oh and the music selection that was playing was pretty good as well, but other than that, I have nothing else to say about this restaurant I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Sampler-this was ok.

This was ok at best and I'm generously giving it 3 stars. With the recommendation's and many great reviews, it was just a total let down. In all fairness, I am not huge on bbq, but who doesn't enjoy some good bbq. So I'm in the city and wanted to try the local fare that people rave about. Got the sampler and the only thing I really liked was the pickles and carrots. The bread on my slider was good too. Also tried the chocolate and caramel cake, chocolate cake was delicious and the caramel cake tasted old.

I don't usually write a review on places I don't like. But coming from Texas I felt I needed to advise my hometown people to avoid this place. I was told the BBQ was the best and the price I paid you would have thought I got it. Unfortunately the Ribs were lacking in flavor and dry. The turkey came shredded and was extremely dry. The brisket was slice thinner than corn beef and lacked flavor as well. The staff were very helpful and even recommended a great local craft beer. However, the beer didn't help the food and I am glad to be back home.

My boyfriend and I were recommended this place in Memphis by a local. It did not disappoint at all. Ordering was walk up and you help yourself to soft drinks. The dry rub wings were his favorite, mine were the honey barbecue. Portions were generous and everything was delicious. A true gem of a local spot. Highly recommend

Food was cold when served. I ordered the brisket and it was extremely dry and no flavor at all! No matter how much sauce you can drown it in. It still couldn't save it! This place was way over hyped! Not worth my time or money!

Came here after visiting the National Civil Rights Museum and it did not disappoint! I was greeted by a very friendly and helpful gentleman at the counter. He helped me narrow down what to order and directed me on where to find a seat I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with Mac n cheese. The pulled pork was tasty (especially with the bbq sauce) and the Mac n cheese was creamy! Overall, it was a delicious lunch!

You can't say you've been to Memphis if you haven't eaten at Central BBQ! This was probably my 4th visit to Central and it was the first time without having to stand in a long line (usually be prepared for that!). Their warm mild BBQ sauce is my go-to on pulled pork accompanied by a nice crunchy slaw. Love the inside and the patio's vibes. Not sure what was up with the potato salad this time...but the whole group agreed, it tasted...carbonated? Google says that's a sign of fermentation so that was alarming.

Where'd the ribs go?

Ask the Community - Central BBQ

Is MSG used in the seasoning?

No.

Is there seating at the bar yet? I usually don't have anyone with me for lunch so I just thought I'd ask.

No, as of two weeks ago, there was not. They were requiring those dining inside to sit at a table.

Can you order take out?

Yes, there are options for eat in or take out.

How is the parking? Is there a lot that is designated for the restaurant? I'm coming from out of town so didn't know if we would need to pay to park somewhere.

Street parking along St. Martin and there's also ~20 spots on the South Side of the restaurant. You probably won't have much luck if you try to park in the Civil Rights Museum parking lot, especially around lunch time.

The food however was honestly meh (in my opinion). I got a creole dish and to be fair my dish looked beautiful. The plating was 10/10 but the taste for me left something to be desired. After eating this dish I questioned if I even like creole sauce because it really just wasn't that good. If this is a preference issue, I honestly don't know. I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). All and all not my favorite restaurant but definitely not the worst!!

There is plenty of parking in a lot across the street. We went inside and found it to be pretty busy, but we got a table for 4 quickly. The place was clean and homey-feeling and I loved the fact that they used disposable plates, utensils and napkins! It is probably way easier on the crew to clean up, and it adds to the relaxed atmosphere. I had the corn nuggets to start, yum! We finished them easily, they were so good. Then the entree of my chicken tenders, beans, and Mac and cheese came out, along with my sweet tea. The sweet tea was perfect, I drank a whole one during my meal and they gave me another to go in the souvenir Gus's cup. The food was just great, chicken was juicy and perfectly crunchy on the outside. Beans and Mac and cheese, delicious! I ate all of it even though I was stuffed. I even went so far as to order a piece of pecan pie for dessert, but unfortunately our server came back out to tell us they were out of it! Guess it wasn't meant to be (this time)! Our server was really friendly during our whole meal, chatted with us a little and made sure we had a great experience! Bottom line.... Go to Gus's!

This entire restaurant is built on a slight slope, and they did not level the foundation when building out the restaurant, so if you're sitting at your table and the table is aligned north to south, you will see a slight lean to the flooring. Also, if you have any juices on your plate of food, the juices will flow toward Beale Street. I wanted to try their tamales but will have to do it on a subsequent visit. This visit we ordered the bowl of gumbo and the Memphis strip steak which is pre-cut for you. The gumbo is slightly salty but good. The strip steak was really good, filling and cooked to order. I chose new potatoes as my one side. Service here can be a little difficult depending how busy they are and how wild your fellow patrons in the restaurant can be. It took a long time to pay the bill here due to a large party coming in right when we were wanting to pay and our server was attending to them for about 15 mins while we were trying to flag him down. Other than that, we had no other problems. I would happily return the next time I'm in the downtown area and looking for food near Beale Street.

I will say that everyone' in my group enjoyed the food and experience. The ambiance is so nice, not overly loud, with the live piano. It's definitely a vibe. Unfortunately, my entree wasn't a hit for me - the shrimp & grits were vinegar-y, the Seabass was cooked well, but lacked flavor. Tried the braised ribs, not impressive at all and could use more oomph (seasoning). I've never returned so many entrees, so I just sucked it up and decided I would put my own touches on it. First Impression The greeter, unfortunately, was not very sociable or welcoming. As the first point of contact, that role sets the tone and atmosphere. A warm smile and engaging greeting would have elevated the entrance experience. Ambiance & Decor Absolutely excellent. The ambiance is intimate, romantic, and perfect for a date night. The decor gives upscale speakeasy vibes -- very fitting for the concept. Service Our waiter was extraordinary. Attentive, professional, and genuinely concerned about our experience. When he noticed my lamb was not cooked to the requested medium-well, he immediately offered to have it corrected. His demeanor alone elevated the evening. Cocktails We ordered an Old Fashioned and an Apricot cocktail (Apricot Sidecar). Presentation and flavor were top-tier. Balanced, smooth, and beautifully garnished. Easily one of the best parts of the night. Appetizer They were out of crab cakes, which was disappointing. We ordered the bacon appetizer, which leaned heavily toward pork belly -- more fat than traditional bacon. The plating and accompaniments were visually stunning and paired nicely with the entrées, but the texture ratio was off. Entrée #1 - Short Ribs, Mash & Asparagus Plating: Excellent Portion size: Generous Flavor: Underwhelming While visually impressive, the dish lacked depth in seasoning and overall flavor. I would rate it . Entrée #2 - New Zealand Lamb & Risotto Requested medium-well; served closer to medium. The waiter graciously had it corrected. The lamb itself lacked strong seasoning -- for effort. The risotto, unfortunately, was overcooked and resembled mashed potatoes in texture. While it wasn't under-seasoned, the structure and execution were not there. Risotto is technical and requires precision. I would rate it . Side - Sweet Potato "Pecan Casserole" Now let's talk about this. I loved it. For someone who appreciates the simplicity of a fresh sweet potato without excessive sugar, marshmallows, or heavy additions -- this was perfect. It tasted like a beautifully mashed sweet potato topped with a pecan strudel. It wasn't a traditional casserole in the sugary Southern sense, but it was balanced and well executed. This was a win for me. Overall Ambiance: Service: Cocktails: Food Execution: - depending on dish Itta Bena shines in atmosphere, service, and bar program. The kitchen has strong presentation, but seasoning and technical consistency need refinement.
