Visiting Graceland has become an annual event in my household and we always make Vernon's our lunch spot in the middle of our day of touring. It's set up in a cafeteria-style, where you grab a tray, order, and your plate is made. We always get the BBQ Sampler which means you get one rib, one smoked chicken wing, smoked brisket, and pulled pork, plus 2 sides, and roll or cornbread. Their desserts are the standard Southern style choices like pecan pie, apple pie, peach and cherry cobblers, and cheesecake. Bonus, they also serve Coke products, with my favorite, Coke Zero. Employees are friendly enough and of course, Elvis concerts are playing on the tv screens, which makes it even more awesome when you're eating such wonderful bbq in the middle of one of the happiest places on earth (if you're an Elvis fan). We purchased the Ultimate VIP Graceland Tour Package which includes a complimentary meal (if you do the early tour time) at Vernon's Smokehouse. It's cafeteria style, walk up ordering type of place. They have a good variety of meats and sides, but we were surprised at the low/little flavor. They serve the food on styrofoam plates and give you plastic utensils. Do you know what happens when you put your fork into a piece of meat on a styrofoam plate? It goes right through the plate. They need to rethink the serving for sure! I just figured a restaurant on the Graceland property with Elvis' daddy's name would be better. I had minimal interaction with the staff, but what I did have was good. We decided to try this in-house restaurant to save time visiting Graceland. We decided to placed different order to sample each one. I enjoyed my pulled pork flavored with Memphis known bbq sauce, sweet and tangy. My sidter enjoyed her catfish too, a bit salty for her tasting though. Easy and fast service. Place was pretty empty which I thought was going to be for a better experience so we took a chance despite reviews. Nope, the only two who were inviting were the two people in the serving line. Cashiers....its like we were inconveniencing them from their phones to ring us up. You can get whatever you want for your meal, so that was nice. Vernon's is like a cafeteria style joint, where you have your sides and entrees in front of you. and you travel down the line with a tray. I went with the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and brown gravy and okra. The meatloaf is standard meatloaf with a tomato sauce top. It was not dry at all and had that classic meatloaf taste. The okra was good but not great and the potatoes and gravy were average as well. I would get this lunch again depending on the price, which I do not know as we had the voucher for the free meal. My mother had the ribs which were very good as well. They were large and not oversmoked, so the meat had a slight tug off of the bone but was still flavorful and juicy. I'd get these again as well. It may have been that the food tasted better than it is because we were tired and had just come off of a 3 hour tour of the grounds. But, it defintely did the job and we were all pleased. The corn is cooked inside of the pig, the server said, so I was expecting it to have an amazing flavor. It was very bland to me. The cornbread was more like a dessert and it was pretty tasty. As part of the "Elvis Presley's Graceland" complex (across the street from Graceland), this is one of the main places to grab lunch as you take a respite while visiting the museums and displays in the complex and/or take the mansion tour. This would be the "husband" restaurant to Gladys' Diner. Quick side story, during the mansion tour, there is a smokehouse that Elvis's father Vernon used next to the office so it's history is not too far off. Unfortunately, the BBQ isn't too far on. I went with the chopped pork sandwich (side of beans) and it was decent. At least it was freshly chopped to order. Not sitting under a lamp drying out or assembly line produced. But definitely needed sauce to give it good flavor. Bun was very basic. Note although this is a restaurant as part of the Elvis Presley's Graceland complex, it is outside of the ticketed perimeter (so one can enter without a ticket. The menu looked reasonably diverse with a variety of meat/vegetable options that you would see at any BBQ restaurant (see Yelp photos which are more thorough than the Yelp menu; look for the recent ones). And it's a good lunch, as good as any on the grounds. But am I grading this against the curve for BBQ? Yes. It's required. Inside has plenty of rustic seating and actually what appears to be a stand alone bar room although it wasn't used during the day I was there. Hours are tight to coincide with the hours of Elvis Presley's Graceland complex (close ~5pm) so it's not much after hours, hardly seemed worth having a bar. I just grabbed a beer in the food area to accompany the BBQ. Good service, the fella cutting the BBQ wasn't going very fast but BBQ isn't supposed to be fast. I wanted to like it, but afterward I wished there had been healthier options such as Salads. It was just too heavy for a mid-day meal & then to tour for 4 more hours.
