I don't often write reviews but after eating at Jian's Kitchen, I felt like I needed to write this not only because of the food, but as the restaurant resides in the basement on a bustling street where plenty of other great restaurant are around, I would like to bring more exposure to this cute little spot. I highly recommend the spare rib with salted eggs, one of my favorite dishes and this place does it very authentically. The three tones basil chicken was very flavorful, you would love it if you were a fan of basil. My only complaint was that the portion size was smaller compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. Overall, if you are looking to try some authentic Chinese cuisine while in the area, do give this place a try!

    Q3. Hot & Sour Soup

Always been great when I come here. Got the human pork. Great. Hot and sour soup, I think it was home made.

The new ownership here has replaced Northeastern Kitchen and everything so far is really exceptional. James speaks very good English and the communication/translation between the owner and the customer works well. They are open late enough for me to swing by after work to grab some real authentic Chinese. The liver/kidney and intestines is amazing and perfect spice, the beef stomach mala is amazing, and most of all I like the different steamed fish choices they offer. This is really unheard anywhere else in PGH. I am a fan again! Having the original cook from Northeastern still there makes the deal work! Happy New Year!!

The food is good - authentically Chinese. The taste brought instant memories back to our days living in China, so yeah, we missed those tastes of sour, spicy and hot. The 锅包肉is really good, like those in Harbin... the hot plate spicy fish (sorry I forgot it's name on the menu) has only one word - hot! The staff is attentive and service with a smile. It's not a "PF Chang" setup but down a flight of stairs is a quaint experience to locate a restaurant. The interior is simple but conjures up those "corner" treasures used to find back in Shanghai...

The drinks were a little underwhelming, the cocktails were okay, but the Chinese liquors were really nice to sip on while eating and had interesting flavors! The food was also quite solid- would recommend the Singapore style noodles which had good flavor and a fairly large portion size as well. Taro dumplings were also a standout, but everything else was fairly good. Overall I don't think it's a must try, but if you want a solid spot for dimsum and Chinese food with a really nice vibe, would recommend!

Nothing bad, but nothing great either…read more We had a reservation for Saturday evening and arrived a little early, but they were still able to seat us right away. We opted to sit outside because the dining room was incredibly loud. Service was good, and our waitress was attentive, especially considering how busy they were. We ordered an appetizer special and a lobster noodle entrée to share between two people. Unfortunately, the food was probably the most disappointing part of the experience. Nothing was necessarily bad, but everything seemed to be lacking flavor. The ginger sauce on the entrée had actual chunks of ginger in it, but somehow didn't taste like the ginger had really infused into the sauce. It just felt flat. The lobster was fried in the shell, which made it difficult to share, and it was also overcooked. Our appetizer actually came out after the entrée and had a similar issue. The chili sauce was fine, but it didn't have much of the heat or depth of flavor we were expecting. Prices seemed pretty average for this type of restaurant in the area, and the service was certainly solid. Ultimately, though, the food just wasn't memorable enough for us to recommend it or make us want to return.

The inside is fairly large with a good amount of tables. We ordered a few apps to share and everything came out quickly. The smashed cucumber salad is HUGE and delicious with a lot of good flavor. The wings were crispy and the chicken satay was really flavorful. We loved the flaky egg tarts and the scallion pancakes. The chicken fried rice had a touch of sweetness to it which was unexpected but we liked it!

There are so many great restaurants in Oakland to choose from and they're definitely on that list. Everything from the boba to the rice and all in between is delicious. Well, at least what I had was. I will have to go back and make my way through the rest of the menu. What I had: Cake foam boba milk---OMBoba...delish (I need to try the Snow mountain boba next) They have so many drink options that it's overwhelming. Beef satay was tender and well-seasoned Fried dumplings and cucumber salad---yum Chicken Chow Fun---I think they mean Chicken Chow YES Last note: As you can imagine, they can get extremely busy as with most restaurants in Oakland. It's worth the wait.

It seemed to attract a lot of nearby people on their lunch breaks as well as students. I went in late December so it wasn't too busy and I found parking around the corner. I was seated and browsed through the menu. I ended up ordering: - Warm HK milk tea: I found this overly sweet overwhelming the milk tea - Pork with egg: This was under the HK menu with the char siu, crispy duck, and chicken option. What I got was not what I was expecting (char siu and boiled egg). The plate was more egg drop soup with pork and peas. It also had a sweet flavor. - Dim sum for one: Sui mai was decent. Har gao was off. They must have put something meant for the dessert dumpling into it. Coconut didn't have the mochi consistency I was expecting. It was very soft, not at all sticky or chewy. Staff was really nice. I just didn't enjoy my meal, unfortunately.
