I checked out Wallace's for the first time last night. It was a Sunday night and pretty quiet. I had made a reservation through OpenTable but clearly didn't need it. We ended up sitting at the bar and the bartender was awesome. We enjoyed chatting with him and he gave us some great recommendations including the Smoked Gouda Housemade Sourdough Flatbread. It was loaded with caramelized onions, roasted tomatoes and watercress. And had a balsamic drizzle on it. It was fantastic. Also, if you are thinking about what side to order, make sure you try the Cheddar Stone Ground Grits. Grits are usually hot or miss and they hit a home run with these. There cocktails are also on point. The Violet Lemondrop with housemade violette and St. Germain was my favorite. Followed closely by the Blueberry Thyme Smash. read more

This is yet another place that I know for a fact I have reviewed on Yelp and yet the review is nowhere to be found. So let's try this again: I've been here twice with my boyfriend and it's ok. Really not anything special but it's not awful either. The pimento cheese and crackers are a good app and the mac and cheese side was ok but kind of watery. We shared a burger on one visit and it was good but not anything that jumped out at me. The service was good though. The music is great of course. We came to see some local musicians who are also friends perform. I just feel like the food could be a little more consistent. read more

I will preface this rating with the fact that it was a take out order, so I'll have to go in person to get the full experience. This is strictly based on food. My girlfriend ordered a bacon egg and cheese sandwich. The yolk was a lot runnier than she was used to but still gave a positive review. The hash browns were essentially shredded potatoes without any seasoning. Lastly the pancake was very undercooked. This is the most interesting venue in the world (at least in my experience!). Tonight I am listening to Spanish Opera Music...in a bar...with lots of other people! The music is quite good and the emcee is hilarious. I usually come to Wallace's for jazz, but tonight I came out of curiosity and to see my voice teacher perform. Everyone at Wallace's is friendly. The servers are outstanding. And the food is quite good. Emcee: "Who has better opera on a Tuesday in a bar?" FYI: Tonight the Pens are playing the Caps in a playoff game here in Pittsburgh and this place is packed. With no tvs. Ok, back to the food. I have had the shrimp and grits, crab cakes, caramelized brussel sprouts, and tonight the smoked salmon quesadilla. I wasn't a fan of the quesadilla but I've loved everything else. For the service it would be 4 stars, but the food was average. I would give this place a 3.5 star if I could. We had reservation for 8pm and when we show up, the place was empty. So not sure why they put our reservation that late. We had couple appetizers and includes the catfish nugget like a lot other reviewers recommended. It was good light breaded fried fish. Our server was very nice and few of his recommendations were good. Like the fried green tomato, shrimp taco and etc. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, they have live jazz music. Probably will check it out sometime soon. It was a good time. I would go back during the live music days. read more

Food is 4 star stars. Absolutely loved it. Wait staff was slow and confused. Other sections had people seated after us getting food done way before us even though we didn't have anything with a long cooking time. I could tell our waiter would take an order, go handle other business and wait to put stuff into the POS system. I also heard him tell a nearby table that he couldn't find the whiskey list. Hello, you have whiskey in your name. Place is nice for a restaurant in a hotel and the food was actually like 4 stars, but with how long it took to get rather simple items (burger medium, side ceasar, a flatbed, and an app) I have to knock it down to 2 stars. We both peed multiple times before our orders arrived and I was not drinking and my girlfriend was on her first drink and neither of us have bladder issues haha. This place was packed when we arrived on a Friday due to hosting a live band. It was very jazzy and alive and people were just eating it up! However, it was so loud that on the second floor, our room was vibrating from the bass. We went downstairs to have dinner but only after the band had left and very few people were dining in. It took a ridiculous amount of time to order and get our food. And to top it off, the things we asked for that were in the menu were "out". My husband got a chicken Cesar salad and an order of the deviled eggs. I got the chicken breast zucchini and mashed potato's. My 3 year old daughter wanted spaghetti and meatballs but they were out of meatballs so she went with a kids cheeseburger instead. The food... was terrible. Everything just tasted as if it was frozen and thawed and sautéed. It was all mushy and too moist with no flavor. I used a lot of salt. Even my daughters hamburger was terrible. The bun and meat was stale and rubbery. The only reason it gets even one star is the service. The folks helping us were so amazing and accommodating! The next morning, we walked around downtown to find a place to eat breakfast. So new flash- nothing in downtown Pittsburgh opens until 11am! So we regretfully made our way back to the hotels restaurant. I went with the buffet, my daughter and son both got a side of pancake (literally one pancake each) and my husband got an omelet. The buffet was advertised that it had yogurt, fruit, has browns, eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast and pancakes. The actual buffet had no pancakes, the French toast was super rubbery and tasteless, no eggs and the fruit was very skin. I had complained so they brought out a new thing of eggs so basically I paid $13 to eat two helpings of scrambled eggs that were cold and chewy. The bacon was more like turkey bacon, was not crunchy or like real bacon. My kids pancake was really bad. I don't know how pancakes can be jacked up but this places wins first prize! Even drenched in syrup my daughter would not eat it. Outside of the bar, I'd never eat at this place again!! read more

Place is not overly busy and the service greatly improved from the last time . Had a Caesar salad with chicken which the meat was extremely moist and over all I enjoyed. The server appropriately kept checking in but at the same time give me my privacy. Overall good experience! read more

When I heard about this place, I didn't realize it was in a hotel. So that was surprising. I have to say though, my food was pretty good. I got the catfish nuggets and the fried green tomato and pimento cheese sandwich. The sandwich was good, but I could have eaten two orders of those nuggets. My girlfriend, myself and her parents (who were in town visiting) swung by Wallace's for dinner and live jazz on Saturday night. If i could do half-stars i'd give Wallace's 3.5. First off, the ambiance was great and the appetizers were awesome ( the four of us shared the Triple Dip, Catfish nuggets and one other appetizer i can't seem to find on the menu now) and were second only to the great live music. Our drinks were nice too; i was quite impressed with the beer selection. However, where the food fell a bit flat for me was with my Pineapple & Chickpea Curry (save yourself the extra $7 and don't get shrimp with it) as it was just kind of "entry-level curry" lacking any real heat and spice. It was a baseline curry that's a good and safe foray into similar dishes if you've never had them, but it was entirely unremarkable. Also a let down was my girlfriend's Catfish Po-Boy, which i had a couple bites of. Much like the curry, the Po Boy was unremarkable and whelming. Neither of us tried what her parents ordered--the Black N' Gold Burger and the Gnocchi--but they seemed to enjoy their dishes. Though, it's worth noting the Gnocchi is marked as vegetarian, but it comes with chicken (not marked as optional). Overall a fine meal but the company and the live music were better highlights than the food. read more

Disappointing in the day time. Went to Wallace's for breakfast this morning and was pleasantly surprised to find the location essentially empty... this was set to be a plus on a Saturday morning in a bustling neighborhood, unfortunately other than being seated immediately nothing else was prompt. For a party of three we were brought two waters to start. We were then served luke warm coffee, with no proactive offer of a refill until the meal was over halfway done (no water refills were ever offered). The service was extremely slow for the place to be slow empty but the time between ordering to table was fine. They get kudos on their portion sizes but the food was very much okay. Not a version of the best anything you'll find in Pittsburgh, we had the griddle cakes, the hash and an omelette. Even the toast that came with the omelette (a single piece) was tough. The prices were no better and actually slightly steeper than some of Pittsburgh's best breakfast and brunch spots. For a whiskey room I also expected breakfast alcohol on the menu but we were told (incorrectly we later found out) no alcohol could be served until 11 am. I assume they must have some brunch specials but who knows. I saw the happy hour menu on the way in and it looked promising so I wouldn't suggest this review necessarily universally define this restaurant however follow this review and others... pass on the breakfast for sure. read more

Our evening here started with wariness, shifted to genuine enjoyment and crashed into disbelief. The place was clean and friendly upon entering and we thought we may have stumbled upon a little gem as a jazz band was getting ready to play. Our drinks were brought promptly and were good. Order was taken and food was delivered in time. THEN the bottom dropped out: we didn't see our waiter again for a looooong time( easy 45 minutes) The menu described food that seemed promising (although there was a spelling mistake on one of the menus). When we received our food it was just "ok", the pork was dry and the rolls for the sandwiches dominated the plate and the meal. I ate the pork with a fork. While my wife's fried catfish was done very well, the same bread issue was present. In the end it took us multiple attempts at waving down employees to get our check. All in all we were disappointed and won't be back. P.S. The misspelling on the menu should have been the clue that this place wasn't up to par. read more

I chose to have breakfast with my family to start off my 30th Birthday due to a pretty positive experience, previously. I was looking forward to having the grit bowl, but we were informed that it was no longer an option (which is understandable). We placed our orders and had coffee and water while we waited, and waited, and waited. After AT LEAST an hour of waiting, we were served food that was equally cold and disgusting. I had an appointment scheduled so we had to take our food to go. We were told that there were room service orders that was placed before ours. This information would've been helpful if we were told this upfront. We would not have made the decision to sit and wait for over an hour, just to be dissatisfied. Horrible horrible service. We came Tuesday and omg the waitress jewel was HORRIBLE!!!!! We seen her maybe twice. The only reason we didn't leave is because of a lady Sarah. You could tell this lady was not supposed to be waiting tables but jewel couldn't handle the 3 tables outside. I arrived at 7:00 pm and there were very few people in the lounge area. The server, an older slim balding man, brought a menu at 7:16 and I immediately ordered a very simple drink, which I had to repeat twice. It is now 8:57 and my drink never came, nor did he ever check back at my table. I might have flagged him down, but about a month and a half ago I had this same server and he got all 4 orders from my table wrong. I didn't want to ruin my jazz listening experiance with that aggravation again. Also, that night I had another event to go to so I purposely asked for my check 20 minutes before I had to leave. He never came back and I had to search for him to get my check so as not to be late. The reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is that the other times I have been here with different servers the food, drink and service has been adequate The Jazz is always excellent. read more

We came to see The Flow Band on 2/15/19 and have a light dinner. We were seated, given a glass of water and apparently forgotten. The dining area was not full, there were plenty of empty tables, one to the left, right and across from us. Also the dining area is not large, I would be surprised if 30-40 could dine at once. After we sat there for 45 minutes (ready to order), we went and stood in front of the bar to listen to the band (the only saving grace), then left. We've passed by here several times and hear ads on the radio regarding their entertainment. This weekend we decided it was time to try it. First impression was beautiful atmosphere. Friendly hostess. However, we ended up at the bar to eat because there were only small tables--too small to eat or those that were being saved for 4 people. After ordering a drink a woman came over and told us there was a cover charge. OK, but you should have a sign at the door or a person at the door to collect this. We paid and ordered dinner. Within 10 minutes the 4 top tables were full--all with only 2 people at each! Not fair. The servers at the bar were cordial, but, our backs were to the music and it was hard to hear being so far back. Food was just ok though I'm assuming you are famous for meatballs which everyone else seemed to be ordering. While we were eating, another person came along with a box decorated in tin foil and said he was collecting for the musicians! UMM No. Had we not paid a cover, sure, we would have tipped. Another question--were the people who were paying $329 a night to stay in the hotel charged a cover charge to have a drink in the bar?? This place could be so much better with a few tweaks and a customer service class for their employees. I tried to talk to a manager before I wrote this review. I was told there was none on duty. I would have also contacted them via email prior to my review, but they don't have an email option on their website! read more
