Beautiful surroundings and the interior is very nice, several separate rooms. We were graciously greeted upon arriving, coat check. We had reservations thru Open Table, were taken right to our table for two. I had a "Matcha Silk", which was not bad, but wouldn't order again. Beet Carpaccio was very good, Marie's Carrot salad was good, but my opinion was that the carrots should have all been shaved thiner or blanched to make them less crunchy. The Halibut was fantastic and my pork chop was tender and tasty! Cheesecake good also, my wife of course talked up the table next to us, they were very nice. Service very good. Food and service were outstanding! Lovely historic home on meticulously kept grounds. My husband for the steak and although it said Belgian waffle fries it showed up with regular fries , either way it's not the type of establishment where one would expect fries period as the starch and strawberry mojito tasted like club soda with a mint leaf in it (not muddled) but those were the only improvements needed. Gnocchi with pesto was amazing and clam chowder was to die for. Staff really took pride in their work. read more

Wow, wow, wow. I feel so lucky that I was driving on Rt 7 and saw this beautiful house and I stopped to see if they had a restaurant (the patio lights gave me sense that it would). The restaurant is located in Swift's House which has several beautiful (1800s buildings on a small hill). The food was exquisite. We ordered more than we could eat because everything sounded delicious and it was. Linus was our waiter who was attentive throughout our dinner. Jessica's was the best food I have ever had in my entire life. I got the steak frites and it was 11/10 phenomenal. Not only that, the service was extremely extremely phenomenal. Everyone there was so incredibly kind and nice that I instantly felt right at home. On top of that, it was extremely beautiful inside. Ambiance/Atmosphere: Definite "Vermont Inn" dining room, with old time charm and romantic and calm atmosphere. You can actually have conversation with a nice quiet environment. "New England Charm". Service: Very attentive staff all around, great help with wine choices, food recommendations, and just the right amount of attention. Food: Amazeballs. All around great, from the starting cocktail, through the soup (lots of lobster in it), main course and dessert. Everything was well presented, high quality, and delicious. Definitely worth a visit. We visited the bar right as they opened just by happenstance. The bartender/mixologist Laura made us the most lovely, flavorful drinks and was even able to get us a table for dinner. This restaurant is a historical home and is well cared for. Very cozy and full of charm. All of the staff was extremely attentive, and the food was excellent as well. We ended the night with some sort of lovely apple pie concoction. It was the best way to end our trip to Vermont! In this quaint Vermont town full of surprises, Jessica's at the Swift House was the most delightful one of all! I can't say enough about my experience at Jessica's in Middlebury Vermont! Upon arrival you feel like you are transported back to a time when dining was an event. Take time to look around, the establishment, there is history here from the books to the art, we felt like we could have spent a day just reading everything. But that's not why we were there. We came because everyone we met said, it is a must dining experience while in town... They all were RIGHT!!! My wife had a couple apps, the "Classic Caesar" and the "Soup G", which was a sweet corn and crab bisque (WOW!!!). I had the Duck 2 ways and couldn't decide which way I loved more! DELICIOUS!!! We wanted to experience more, so we asked if it would be ok to have desert in the bar. What a great space! The owner Matthew sat with us for a bit and told us wonderful stories about this incredible place. Really made our night so special! My wife had coffee (she was driving) and I enjoyed another Frost, Little Lush IPA (so Good!!!) We split the chocolate mousse, which was so good, but she ate most of it because I was too slow. So Yes the mousse was Great, but if you take your time enjoying like me, order one for yourself too! We were there just before Labor Day, but I can only imagine how magical this place is in the Fall/Winter!!! I only wish we would have stayed at the Hotel that is connected to this gem, because we could have had breakfast there every morning! NEXT TIME! I was treated to dinner for my birthday a few weeks ago. The service was excellent and attention was given to every aspect of our dinner comfort. The server..Sarah ..was knowledgeable and described the dishes in detail. Although I do not drink, there was a sommelier should we have needed her services. I had the salmon stuffed with crabmeat served on a bed of fingerling potatoes and green beans. My companion had the scallops - which were huge. The dishes were plentiful and delicious. I normally don't eat dessert, but could not pass up the maple creme brulee. It was presented to me with a little birthday candle - a nice touch. When we left, I was helped on with my coat and wished a Happy Birthday. I definitely will be returning. read more

as a party of four who spent close to $500 we were asked to leave because they "needed the table". this was less than 15 minutes after finishing dessert. I believe this was caused by their racist demeanor. We were three white people with a mexican american woman. I can't recommend this place less and I am considering a discrimination suit for my female companion. Many of the plates we tried could have used additional seasoning however, it is obvious the chef(s) want to offer a variety of well-conceived and freshly prepared seasonal dishes. Order the flavorful Beet Salad NOT the overcharred brussel and kale plate--which I should have sent back. Each dessert we shared was outstanding. Very nice for an elegant meal or celebration. My driver met me near the baggage claim area with a sign, which made everything easier. She carried my bag to the car. She was courteous, professional, and I enjoyed chatting with her on the way. We stayed at this charming inn during our winter snowboarding trip to Vermont. The rooms are spacious and has the classic bed and breakfast vibe you would expect. We stayed at the house located on the corner of the main street and aside from us there was only one other guest within the same house. So we took advantage and spent a couple of evenings cozied up to each other in front of the fireplace with a bottle of wine. The food is above average and we didn't have any complaints with the breakfast offerings. We'd stay here again if we ever need to stay in Middlebury again. read more

Last night some friends were spending their last night in town before relocating to Wisconsin s we wanted to try to have a special night din out in Addison County. We made reservations for four to be seated at 6:30. We received a text confirmation of the reservation. We were seated promptly upon our arrival. Our waitress Myra, was very pleasant. She was very knowledgeable about the menu items as well as the specials. When asked a question regarding a particular wine, she referred us to their sommelier who was well trained with the wine list. The female wait staff were very elegantly dressed and the males were all dressed in black. When our meals were served, they did not have to ask who got what, they served food from the left, beverages on the right, cleared from the right after each course, and did everything you could ask for correctly. It was a warm humid evening, so Myra provided sidecars of ice to keep our water chilled And replenished both the water and the ice without being asked. My wife and I each ordered the seared scallops. The plating of the food was carefully and artfully done. The bed of creamy polenta, roasted asparagus, scallops, crispy prosciutto, and the Kalamata tapenade were all perfectly cooked. Myra saw to our every need, but observed that we were intent on enjoying our last evening together for awhile and went out of her way not to hover or intrude on our conversations. All of our desserts were outstanding- we particularly enjoyed the date cake with salted caramel pudding a la mode. The candied ginger was delightful. We look forward to our future special occasions which will out be celebrated at our new favorite restaurant. read more

My dinner partner's meal was served lukewarm, and, despite the fact that it was the day's special, was reportedly tasteless, and honestly, the presentation did not look particularly appetizing. My own dish was barely warm enough, and it too was utterly without flavor, the sauce bland as milk. Maybe it was. Given the inn's culinary aspirations, how can this be? Even the dessert cheesecake--with a crust so hard the slice nearly leapt off the plate when you cut off a bite. I love to support everything local, but--get it together folks! read more

This is one of the most historic and beautiful houses in Middlebury. I would desperately like to give them 5 stars, but it's just not there for them. The wood panelled dining room should be elegant but it was obviously lacking in any personal attention. About six tables around the edge of the room were set & ready for diners, but all tables in the middle were bare save the table cloths, giving the appearance of a failed banquet. The waitstaff was friendly, but harried & clearly understaffed. The food? OK. Between the three of us, we had crab cakes (with no sauce), lobster bisque (fine), a Greek salad (ok), beef kabobs (ok), and a cheese platter with baguette (ok). Overall the meal was just fine, but certainly not great and the ambiance was a major distraction. This place could be (and deserves to be) so much more. My wife and I, visiting Middlebury over Christmas, booked a table for Dec. 23, since Christmas Eve was fully booked days ahead of time. We each had an outstanding meal. I was especially pleased that the menu was organized so that I could choose a meal that would not conflict with my goal of holding my weight steady over the holidays. I chose the beet salad, the cauliflower "steak" over broccolini, and a house-made orange sorbet. All were excellent. My wife's meal, which centered on fish, was likewise excellent. So, first let's be clear. This 2 star review is for breakfast only. Dinner at Jessica's is top notch and never disappoints for the price and overall dining quality. Having such amazing experiences in the recent past we thought it would be the same for breakfast. It was not. And it took 45 minutes to discover this. The breakfast is an all inclusive at $16 per person. You have a wide variety of drinks. A selection of cerial, Mixed fruit and some bananas. Now here is where it gets a little disappointing. The pictures below are 2 of the 4 plates of food that were brought to us 40+ minutes later. We left. However there's a catch. We were told by our server(after the food was served)that we could order more food if we'd like and it would still be included for the orginal $16. Now armed with this information my recommendation would be to order multiples right from the start. Aside for not being all that informative, the service was great and the coffe was very good. As for the food quality, not sure. We didn't eat it. So if your in the area and want a great dinner....Jessica's should be at the top of your list. Breakfast....at you own risk. read more

What an amazing place for dinner, with a fire crackling and warm, lovely rooms overlooking a snowy lawn. Top notch food, starting with the best ever chicken liver pate and bright, earthy beet salad. The rack of lamb was huge and perfectly cooked (I gnawed on the bones they were so good!). My companion had tender seared scallops in a sherry cream with lobster ravioli that was decadent and yummy. The homemade blood orange sorbet was a perfect palette cleanser. The service was friendly and skilled and we left looking forward to our next visit. This place is the real deal!!! read more

I was wavering between 4 and 5 stars. But then, as I got to thinking, I couldn't come up with a single thing that could have or should have been better. This is a restaurant in a lovely, historic inn. The decor is by-the-book traditional. Not always my thing, but of its kind, it's outstanding. In good trim: no shabby chic. Service for our party of 8 was top notch. Now, it may have helped matters that 2 of us are Middlebury College faculty who live within walking distance and are very much on a first-name basis with the staff. But again, the result was terrific. It wasn't a super-busy night for them. We needed to delay our start time. No problem. We had a private dining room. We weren't fussed over, but definitely attended to and not rushed. Great rhythm. I was feeling temperate so I didn't look at the wine list (when we were there). I just did. It is of excellent quality and the prices are extremely reasonable. They have some very solid $20 bottles (Gruet's always-dependable brut sparkler--just one example). Everybody at the table, though, who ordered an adult beverage was pleased. Joe was especially fond of his dirty vodka martini. Food. I took the locals' advice and got the crab cakes. Excellent. Super crabby. Two of our party are vegetarian and they had choices, not simply one sad pasta dish. Desserts were also enjoyed. We landed here after calling what felt like every other hotel in Middlebury after I initially assumed this place was our of our price range. Wrong! Swift House Inn is entirely reasonable. We ended up in the John Deere room (in the carriage house at the end of the block). All amenities were great. Sadly we had to miss breakfast due to an early flight, but it looked like they were gearing up for something special! read more

I was very disappointed in the overall experience. Not only was the grade of the food very poor, the service was subpar, unless you wanted to drop 100 bucks on wine. Hell maybe that would have made the dinner better. 1. I had a Cesar Salad and the dressing was very bitter with little flavor. No fresh anchovies and the croutons were deep fried and the grease was still there when it was delivered to me. 2. My date had the Calamari that was way over cooked with some odd tomato based sauce on it that was very distasteful. 3. For an entree my date had the broiled scallops. They were extremely over cooked and nearly burnt. They were extremely rubbery. 4. My entree was the Statler Chicken that was under cooked and the reduction sauce was extremely watery and bland. The chicken had very little flavor For the price, the expectation was much higher and I was very dissappointed. The web had it at 2 dollar signs for expense. It's was more like 4 dollar signs needed. We dropped 100 bucks and no drinks. If you're looking for delicious meal and a good price, this is not it!! Sorry! So much for this being a 4.5 start restaurant. This place did not deserve the rating they had on the web. I willing to bet that googlers were offered something in exchange for their top ratings. read more
